Luckily (?) it was a wellness/yearly vaccines visit and the rabies wasn't overdue at all. Another awesome benefit to general practice. If this had happened while I worked emergency, where I swear none of the cats we treated where up to date on vaccines, I'd be getting my rabies series compliments of workman's comp.

Unfortunately, in Arizona you have to do a bite report with county animal control and would therefore never be able to get the doctor to believe that the bite was indeed from a different animal. I don't know how that works elsewhere but that is how it works in Arizona.
 
My dog (Roc) is doing better today... no vet visit as they could not fit him in, too busy. Yeah.... she said if he got worse she would find a way to see him. Thankfully no vomiting since 12 pm yesterday. I fed him 2 very small meals of chicken and rice today and he kept those down. He is definitely feeling better today as he was interested in food and not as lethargic - more alert. I was ridiculously worried about him yesterday as he was beyond lethargic. I am going to continue on the chicken & rice small meals for at least a few days as long as he continues to improve. I am crossing my fingers that this was just some bizarre stomach bug. Every time in the past he has had any stomach issue it has turned out to be pancreatitis. So I am still wary... :xf:


On another note - foot cramps!!!! :annoyed:

my grandma officially started radiation and chemo today for her glioblastoma :scared:

while I know it's not a cure, and it's not going to stop the tumor from doing its mayhem, it's a small relief to know we are finally DOING something; that there is a small amount of HOPE!

I also wanted to say thanks again for everyone's kind words. I've been little sporadic on SDN, and find it hard to post about my grandma and everything that is happening, but I really appreciated everyone's sympathy 😳

I get to spend all day with her now that my job is done, it can be a bit draining emotionally, but I can't imagine a better way to spend my time now that I have it 🙂

What did I spend my day doing? Fixing issues caused by none other than Dr. B.

delayed rant: she rebandaged a fracture for a pet of mine the other day. She used white tape circumferentially. the first thing you learn in orthopedics is to never do that. If there is excess swelling, they can lose a limb that way. So I mentioned to her that there was a lot of white tape on it - she told me it stays on better that way.

today's cases:
1) dog came in severely anemic with an increased WBC and she didn't start any meds yesterday. Came back today with anterior uveitis (there was blood in the anterior chamber of the eye - for images look up hyphema) and the owner concerned. Talked to her about labs and further diagnostics but we elected to start antibiotics due to money concerns.

2) Drain placement on a big dog little dog victim. She placed it in the bite wound (drain placed in traumatized tissue), stapled the incision she made closed AND covered it in skin glue. The skin around the staples was so bruised and upset from how it was handled and way too tight. So I had to remove what she did and start over. There were new pockets as of today. She also had it in the notes that it was to recheck with her ONLY.

3) New case as of today (so not something I was cleaning up for her) - 4 mo F puppy came in for eating a mushroom. Poor girl was throwing up everywhere. 🙁 Good prognosis though

My pup ate a mushroom when she was about that age too... I panicked :scared:

I learned in my pre-vet-school career that there are quite a few people who are ****ty at their jobs but really skilled at making their coworkers and superiors think they're awesome at their jobs. Dr. B doesn't sound like the typical charming idiot who gets by on personality but screws up everything else, but she definitely seems incompetent at her job but fairly competent at doing whatever she needs to do to keep it. Those people are THE WORST.
 
i'm sorry what? using white tape for the bandaging? stapling the incision site closed and then using SKIN GLUE? HOW DOES SHE HAVE A DVM DEGREE??????

That's cool. I'd rather pay the $700 for the shots myself then have possibly contracted rabies. That's just me though.

I think you missed my point there?? We were talking about getting the rabies series for free because you got bit by that cat because the cat was up to date on its rabies vaccine there is not a good enough reason for you to get the rabies series from that bit alone (think normal person bit by cat that was current on rabies vaccine there is no place that would give that person a rabies vaccine series from that cat bite). The fact you are going to vet school, that is a different story. 😉

Horse has turned into a spooking lunatic in our indoor arena and made my life into a living hell. He is angelic off the property, on trails, in the outdoor riding field, etc...put him in the indoor and the WORLD IS ENDING. (and NO. I am NOT looking for medical advice. His eyes and saddle fit are fine. He has been treated for ulcers. He is not injured or in pain.) So VERY VERY frustrated. At one point, I stopped him in the middle of the ring and promptly burst into big fat tears. I'm trying so hard and seeing no long-term improvement. Money is too tight to have my trainer out right now and no point on trailering him to my old barn because THIS arena is the problem.

I'm just sad. I really want to enjoy him and I'm feeling incompetent and unable to do anything about it. During each ride, I will see improvement but the next day we start right back at square one (and sometimes square negative 1). *sigh* I rode him for 2 weeks in the outdoor and had really good rides on him and thought that building his trust up out there would help. Not so much. I have an extremely busy schedule: The point of having a lighted covered arena is to USE IT.

Back at it tomorrow. 🙁

(Honestly, I am not looking for training advice. I'm not a novice rider or anything. Just dealing with a longer lasting problem then I have ever encountered in my 17 years of training horses. Just sympathy is needed. 🙄 Thanks....)
 
Sigh. Had a SPAZZY pug in today for a nail trim. That's right. A nail trim. She is such a nut case!! She tries to bite us like crazy and we can't muzzle because she has an uber smooshed face. She kicks and fails all over the place AND you have to be careful because her soft palate is extra long (could have used sx really) and she turns purple within seconds. I opted to hold her because I am one of the strongest there, her O wigged (per usual) and made the dog FLIP!! Now I have scratches all up and down my stomach which are definitely going to bruise tomorrow. Silly dog.

I hate doing nail trims on pugs. I have yet to find a "good pug". They are all wiggly, turn blue/purple and try to kill you.

I don't know enough about horses to give you any (except that they are odd ducks as far as physiology goes sometimes). I am sorry for all of the troubles you are having. I really hope things get better.

see if you can talk your clinic into getting cone muzzles. We use them for all of our smooshy face pups and they work great without restricting their air flow! Greatly improved my quality of life. :laugh:

It has worked fairly well on some of the cats and we used it recently on a dog that was lunging at us while we were trying to muzzle with a regular muzzle.

:laugh:👍 That thing is hilarious. I don't know who well I would be able to work falling over laughing as I would be..... Looks like it works though!! AND it wouldn't hold the mouth closed as the spastic pug is panting

We tried to talk the O into giving sedative. Nothing strong, just something to take the edge off so her dog (and us really) doesn't almost die every time.
 
Heylodeb, totally understand what you mean. I hope you have better luck at your next ride with your horse!

I always rode horses for my trainer that just needed a regular rider for some reason or another, like standing in the pasture for 4 years without being ridden at all. She wanted me to get him used to just being ridden at the walk, trot and canter. No big deal, right? He was a horror. He just wouldn't stop cantering. It wasn't even a gallop most of the time, but he bit down so hard on the bit that I couldn't do anything. And his canter was so uncomfortable that it literally made my back hurt while riding. I tried for a few weeks. Even asked my trainer for a lesson on him (spending money on him instead of taking regular lessons with my usual show horse), because I was so frustrating. I had to stop at one point because I got so frustrated and mad at him. Never had that with a horse, but I knew I needed a break. For me and my back.

*empathy* My TB gelding is 14 years old now, and I've had him for almost 6 years. We STILL have stupid arguments like this. He hates indoor arenas. All of them. Some more than others, some more on certain days, sometimes with good reason (snow sliding off the roof), some with NO reason like OMFG horse you have been turned out in here like a million times and we ride every single freaking day and now I want to kill you.

They like to test our patience, don't they? 🙄 Even though I've had mine for a long time, and mostly we understand each other, there are still days that I absolutely want to kill him.

STUPID ex-boyfriend that I haven't spoken to in 4 years WON'T LEAVE ME ALONE!!! He did terrible things to me, went to prison for it (where he got my birthday tatooed on his leg 😕) and constantly tries to get in touch with me. I truly, truly could care LESS about him, and I'm starting to get really frustrated. I have 4 of his different FB accounts blocked, and he keeps making more... :wtf:

It has been made VERY clear, and you would think the cheating, stealing, beating, totalling my truck, changing my number 3 times, restraining orders, moving across the entire country to get away from you, and oh yeah, the prison sentence I got you convicted on, would be enough for you to know I DO NOT GIVE A **** ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! :diebanana:

The one I have now is a physical contact one, so it doesn't necesarrily stop him from contacting me otherwise. I'm mostly worried about moving back down there and him finding out where I am. We are from the same small town and went to highschool together so it is nearly impossible to keep him from finding out. He is manipulative and apparently insane (by the true definition) and just asks around until he finds out what he wants. Most people know to keep their mouth shut about me and what I'm doing, but I can't control every person from my town 😡

I just want him to disappear. He sent me a message a few months ago... "As a friend, I want to make sure you are happy."

Luckily, I am not entirely worried about him hurting me or anything (of course, this stuff can turn that way rather quickly I guess), it's just annoying and distracting, and it has caused damage to my current relationship. I mean everyone that was friends with both of us at one point, completely despises him, even his own sister, and all his friends hate him for the things he did to me. I just.... don't get it 😕. I have tried to ignore him, I have tried to tell him to F off, none of it works. FOUR YEARS LATER dude?!?! Ok I'm done sorry y'all, just so frustrated!

haha thanks mother hen! 😀 And you're right, I don't *think* he would do anything to hurt me, but he's obviously not mentally stable so I guess it's better to be careful. Thanks y'all. If I ever see him again, *I* will be the swift kick! :meanie:

Holy ****. Thats freaking insane emiloo. Keep safe, surely as part of his release from prison it would involve not contacting you???

My rant; I pretty much just realised that going clubbing with my classmates is pretty much for single people only. So I walked home, in one of the worst storms perth has had for a long time, because it was so god damn awkward being at clubs with them.

Seriously! They're all like, mmmneeeerrrhhhh and im like, wtf, its an ugly dude and you have no idea what they're saying, and their all like, ohhhhhhh and i'm like, you know what, I'm drunk enough to brave this weather and go home and watch game of thrones with the bf...

Maybe I'm just getting old and boring...

:laugh: I completely understand. There are already people I know I will not be hanging out with from our vet school's FB page. I'm old and boring too 👍
