So, I just basically went into every exam, guessed random answers, got a lot of C's and came out with a B in both Physics I and II. Not too shabby for never trying.

We're getting walloped by a winter storm. The same one that hit New England. It started around 11:30 am and the snow is coming down in buckets. Plus combined with high winds... It makes for very unpleasant walking. I really hope everyone getting it with it today gets home safe!

Good luck! It seems like we may have gotten 2'. Sadly, my lazy butt actually has to shovel out the car this afternoon because I promised the maternal unit I'd take two of her cats to the cardiologist first thing tomorrow morning. Boo!

So, yeah. If anyone's dismayed by the lack of rantage in my last few posts on this thread, stay tuned... it's coming! 😉

(And, in the spirit of the thread, I'd also like to jump on the "I hate physics" bandwagon. Even with an awesome professor- and taken in the summer (less time for all that extraneous crap I didn't really want to learn anyway 😀)- physics was my all-time least favorite class of undergrad... up until I was forced to take statistics last semester, anyway. :barf: Now, it's kind of a toss-up, haha. At least I can kind of see how a basic understanding of stats would be useful in vet med. In a kind-of-sort-of sort of way. The other just felt like a weed-out class.)

Regarding physics... I pulled through it with a B+. There were two physics classes at my school. One for life sciences students, and one for engineers. The life sciences one conflicted with my stats class. So I ended up in the engineering one. The professor was fantastic, but the exams were always so much harder than the problems we were given on assignments. Luckily, we were allowed a cheat sheet with anything we wanted on it (only constraints were that it couldn't be any more than 8.5" by 11" and it had to be hand written). For the second test, I got lucky and one of the problems I put on my cheat sheet came up on the second test, so I got an A on that one to balance out the D I got on the first one. We had assignments which I did well on. And she was very generous with points for trying. Thank gods. :laugh:

Can I just say for the record that the Analytical Writing section of the GRE is the most arbitrary piece of cr&p I've had the sorry pleasure of taking part of over the last twenty years? And yes this is because I got my score back a moment ago and it was a 4.5, after thinking that I had written two brilliant essays.

It's not the end of the world and I won't be rushing back to that testing center and their *****ic ex-prison guard staff for a retake, but I thought I did better than that.

Preach it!

I got a 4.5, too... but I was kind of thrilled, because while I rocked out the second essay, I didn't even manage to finish the first. It took me too long to organize my thoughts and come up with convincing test-worthy BS.

The prompt was obviously attempting to get me to gush about how influential the educational system is. Um... no. I am pretty jaded at this point when it comes to "the system", and I was not feeling it. I am sure it was obvious- the essay read as dispassionate and forced... because it was.

The second topic was easy to write about, but downright ridiculous. I was sitting there thinking, "This? My future rides on... this?"

I still don't get the justification for using the GRE as a predictor of future professional/academic success.

ETA- The staff at my center were really nice... until "break" time, when I made the mistake of stepping off the stairs in front of the center. Three people immediately swarmed out of the building and reprimanded me. "You have to sit." "Huh?" "Sit. You can't leave the stairs. You can sit on them or stay inside."

Never have I felt such empathy for my canine friends... :laugh:

Haha, I had the exact same experience and score. I wonder, how much is the writing section weighed by vet schools? I've only ever seen UT say specifically (http://www.vet.utk.edu/admissions/procedure.php).

Using the percentiles, I'm guessing? ETS did give me a percentile score for my shoddy attempt at the Analytical section... that 4.5 was actually quite a bit lower, percentile-wise, than I was anticipating. 🙁

Nah, not bad... I was just expecting it to be a teensy bit higher. Although I suppose when you consider the fact that most programs seem to like to see applicants in the 70s overall, 65's not far off the mark.

I'm pretty sure the two programs I have the best chance of getting into and am most excited about at this point have 4.0 listed as their average, so while my 4.5 might not totally wow them, I hardly think it's going to hurt if there is interest there.

That's basically how I feel exactly. That, and I need the GRE to look good in all aspects, because some of the ancient GPA doesn't. If it matters, a 4.5 is now apparently 67%ile -- moving up in the world!

Maybe the fact that I haven't written anything other than an email for years was a contributing factor. 😎

Seriously, though, I was sitting in lecture tonight thinking, "Ok, how much do I REALLY wanna be a vet, because I reeeaaallly don't wanna stay in this class!"
2 classes down, 29 more to go!

UC Davis gave no semblance of a f-word about the writing section. I think Penn doesn't even consider it.

edit: I got a 4.0 on that dumb section, TWICE. And 4.0 is like 40th percentile. :meanie:

This is why I always took physics in the summer... six intensive weeks, I could suffer through... an entire semester would have slayed me.

Not sure where you're looking to apply, but I've heard that Minnesota focuses on the prerequisite and last 45 semester hour GPAs as opposed to the cumulative. They've offered me an interview, and you haven't seen horrific until you've seen my first attempt at college. :laugh:

Personally I thought that should be the only thing vet schools consider because it is so obviously directly related to success in vet school. OR NOT..

COMPLETELY AGREE! I had the worst prompts ever and I suck at timed writing and completely bombed that section (no exaggeration - I got a 3.5 and like 26% percentile :scared:) but thankfully most of the schools I applied to didn't really care about that section and I got in anyway. I still think I should have gotten a higher score though - maybe my argument sucked but it was logical with proper grammar and I stayed on topic! Whatever, I never have to take that stupid test again EVER. So - at least you did better than I did.
 
Thanks all for your physics commiserating =) It really does help to know that I'm not alone in my physics loathing!

Also, just as an update, I was pleasantly surprised at the quiz. I'm pretty sure I got at least an 80% on it, so not bad for the first one.

If anyone REALLY cares about their writing score and wants some tips I would be happy to provide them.. I think I have a pretty good formula for the writing section. I got a 6.0 and I helped my wife raise her score by a full point. I just don't think it matters to us though.

Thanks C-Tail - I'd love Minnesota although I have a California-born wife and the idea of "other states" is currently too horrible to accept, so my options are limited. That's a subject for a future Rant that hopefully will resolve itself in an okay way, however.
 
Not knowing which state I am going to be spending the next 4 years in is really stressing me out. Actually, not knowing if I'll get in anywhere or not is stressful enough, but everyone signs leases here really early so I'll be forced to sublet or live alone if I stay here another year.

I know everyone has the exact same issues, but for whatever reason, they just seem extra bad tonight. 🙁

Haha! I feel her pain... I'm an East Coast girl, and the idea of potentially being landlocked for four years is a little intimidating! I'm still waiting to hear from Western (they seem to be a bit more non-trad friendly than some of the other programs, too)... so we'll see what happens there. I'd be psyched about either.

Honestly, I didn't apply anywhere I felt that I couldn't handle living for four years... or to any programs I wasn't excited about. I didn't want to get "stuck" somewhere where I wouldn't be happy. So, at this point, any of the remaining options, I'd be thrilled with. I just want to get accepted! :xf:

In the spirit of this thread: it's currently 11:41 pm, and I have 2' of snow that needs shoveling. Lame! 👎

I hope you're feeling better, breenie! I agree, the whole "after applying" limbo freaks me out too. I will definitely re-apply at least 2 more times after this cycle if I don't get in, but the whole not-knowing thing really drives me crazy (I'm sure others share this sentiment, right?) I made myself apply to 1 internship for the summer so far, but will prolly consider more (even though I've had it up to at least 6 inches over my head with applying and asking the same profs for LOR's).

Non-related rant: I DISLIKE glasses! I really admire anyone who wears them all the time 😀 After a visit to the eye doctor who told me nothing is wrong with my eyes, but stay away from contacts for at least a week, I'm fed up with my glasses. Then again, I'm grateful for my sight! So, I shouldn't rant about this probably...😳
 
I don't know if its a rant, I just had to say it somewhere...

I want to apply for a scholarship that is amazing, but after my grades last semester I'm not sure I'm even close to eligible for it. I feel so torn and a little defeated... It'd be nice to feel like I've got an easy shot at it for once!

I'm 23. I've been wearing them pretty much every waking hour since I was 6 months old. I hate them too. If I could afford Lasik, I'd be there so fast.

I'm not sure how they do it - percentile or number score - but the average is usually a 4.0 or a 3.5 for the matriculated class so it's not like the scores are usually amazing.
 
Or just ignore the dr and only wear contacts all day every day forever. 🙂
I haven't touched glasses since I got contacts 6 years ago and don't plan on it. Waiting for them to make better Lasik for people with astigmatism (and of course to have more money!)

Had successful surgery (actually from one of the leading guys) that corrected my vision to 20/15. After a couple of months (6 or something), vision in my right eye deteriorated to about 20/40. Nothing wrong with the sx, just sometimes the eyes do that. Repeated the surgery. Recorrected back to 20/15. After about 6 months the left eye deteriorated to 20/40 and the right eye was about 20/30. They offered to do a 3rd surgery (this one for additional cost - 1st do-over was free), but I declined b/c it seemed to me that my eyes just didn't want to stay corrected, and the more times you slice little pieces off your eyes the more likely there is to be some longer term problem.

My vision worsened a little bit more, and now has been stable for about 8 years (surgery was 11 years ago).

During almost every eye check-up I have had since then, a different doc has commented that the surgery was really well-done, so it just seems I am destined not to have completely "normal" vision.

At the beginning I was really disappointed to have had an unsuccessful surgery but I got over it. Also my vision is WAAAAAY better than it used to be so I do get away without glasses for many things.

For what it is worth, my wife got the sx at the same time. She had completely corrected vision with no problems. But now her vision is starting to deteriorate ever so slightly, so it is definitely not a lifetime correction!

Sorry about the creepy dreams. I've been having recurring dreams in which I come home to find a slew of rejections from schools I didn't even apply to. Then I open the door to find FAILCat dead in the entryway. 🙁

Fortunately, I am often a somewhat lucid dreamer, so in the event that nocturnal rejections begin to materialize, I now have the option of either waking up or deciding not to open the door. Last time, I "went to a friend's for pizza" instead. :laugh:

I believe this is exactly correct. I did not get in last year, and I met with the admissions director afterward to discuss the rejection and what I could do to strengthen my application for this year.

With regards to grades, they didn't even use the cumulative GPA. The academic score was entirely based on the two GPAs you mention and the GRE score. Nothing more!

As an aside: for the folks who get/got rejected, do NOT pass up the opportunity to get feedback from an admissions director. At least at UMN she was exceptionally thorough and provided invaluable advice. I was stunned throughout the entire meeting - she'd criticize something I thought I had written well, she'd explain WHY she was criticizing it, and a light bulb would go off in my head. My application is an entirely different beast this year because of her input.
 
My damn landlord still hasn't changed over the intercom to my phone (I've only been living here since, oh, September 1). So people come, and I have no idea. Like the plumber, who she arranged to come yesterday, and I'm reasonably sure did come at some point and I missed him because the intercom for my apartment goes to someone else's phone. You'd think she'd have changed it when we had this same problem with the electrician a month or so ago. 😡

Wow. Makes me wish I could get rejected before I even formally apply, just so I know where I *would* have screwed it up. Maybe they do pre-application reviews over the summer.

Some schools do!! Call them and ask if they allow you to meet with an admissions counselor. I didn't do it myself but I've read of other people on here who were able to go in and discuss their GPAs, GREs, experience etc and get an idea of whether the adcom thinks they might be competitive and what they should work on strengthening.
 
Ugh. Classes start again on Tuesday, and I'm only taking one science class this semester (developmental bio) which isn't even going to be fun 🙁 I need to take a comm class because Louisiana isn't accepted my gen ed public speaking-ish class as meeting their prereq (though Kansas accepted it, no problem). And North Carolina won't email me back.

As if to give me something else to complain about 🙂rolleyes🙂, my awesome internship is over 🙁🙁🙁🙁

LOL!! I had a similar thing in the Chem I lab. I was taking off a solution that had been heating on the hotplate and it sliped and spilled all over the hot plate and counter then started popping and cracking...everyone stared😱

I hate my new laptop.
- 2/3 USB ports only work for half of my items half of the time and I don't know how to fix it.
- The only USB port that does work is the only one that's good for my mouse. So I have to unplug my mouse whenever I need to print or charge something.
- I cannot figure out for the life of me how to install my items on my other USB ports. It doesn't pop up and ask me when I plug them in somewhere new.
- The track pad is off to the left. My left wrist keeps hitting it while I type. It likes to minimize windows, delete my text or activates video or voice call on MSN (this gets really annoying when I reach for my mouse to try to stop it and realize I had unplugged it because I was charging something)
- Videos on YouTube only work half of the time. Sometimes they are perfect. Sometimes they are neon green with a silhouette with of the image. I don't know how to fix it.
- What is up with the teeny tiny shift key on the left?

I couldn't find a way out of my house because she waited for me outside of my room... and she broke two of my fingers at one point... seriously? Is there a drug that will fix this?

It sounds to me that it's more likely you got a 'lemon' laptop than it's an issue with you that you need to somehow fix. The laptop should be ready to go, no problems found, right out of the box. Besides basic minimal changes (like the small shift key), new windows software etc, you shouldn't have to look at how to 'fix' anything. How long ago did you buy it? You might need to send it in for refurbishment or replacement if you're still in the warranty window.
