Ugh, that stinks @Ashgirl! We had a two week string not too long ago of every prof going over. Our classes are all podcasted but the recording cuts off at the 50 min mark so we lose that part of lecture. Plus we only have two stalls in the women's restroom outside our 3rd year auditorium for the 140+ women in our class so it's a mad rush to the restroom when class is finally over!

We used to have this one guy who sat smack in the middle who, if things ran over, would slam his computer, stand up (very tall guy, too), pack up noisily, and stomp out.

Totally juvenile, totally unprofessional, and kinda awesome all at once. It was really funny every time he did it.
Mitch? I'm really curious now 😛

We also have had that curse this semester of professors running over time AND we had our Associate Dean tell us to just start walking out of class at the correct time. No one ever does though, sometimes people sneak out if they have to go but mostly we just grumble on FB about it.

I feel horrible. I finally got to bed around 12:30/1PM today after being up all night for surgeries. I had planned on going back to the colic ward to do my 6 PM treatments since I have 3 patients and two are a little more involved (my sx's from last night). I woke up about 20 minutes ago, but my alarm was set for 3:30/4 PM and I must have slept through (I double checked to make sure it was actually set). My rotations mates did all my treatments for me. I feel like a jerk cause I know they each have several cases themselves.

profuse apologies and baked goods fix most things! I've definitely done txs for classmates who were being beat down by clinics.

We've been pretty good about helping each other out if someone is just being slammed/behind. I've definitely done treatments for others, so I don't think anyone is mad. I just feel overly guilty. I'm probably going to run out and pick up apple cider donuts for everyone tomorrow or something.

And the one surgery I ended up taking wasn't even my original case. I just showed up for the surgery cause the Surgery student on call had already been up since 6 AM ( we went to sx around 3/3:30 AM) and she had two procedures today with one of our more intense surgeons. Since ECC doesn't have appointments, I was told I'd be able to go sleep during the day, so I offered to take the case form her so she could rest/review.

Getting burned out with constant tests these days. Only 3 or 4 weeks to ago (Can't be bothered to check).

The supervisor at this rotation is legitimately one of the most difficult to work with people that I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with jfc. I don't think I've had a particularly positive interaction with her yet after two freaking days.

Found out my mentor met with his other mentee 2 weeks ago, but I've been getting no response to my emails at all AND he said he would contact me himself to set up something. Doesn't really do much for my constant feelings of inadequacy. I think I'll give him another week and then I'm going to ask for a new mentor.

How do you get a mentor? It is something formally set up where there is a pool of vets that want to mentor?

Literally just got bitched at because I went out of my way to clarify whether they wanted PT done on a bird the way I was shown yesterday, or how it was ambiguously written in the medical record (which I pulled out and referenced of my own volition).

Got bitched at for doing it the way I was shown.

I have two weeks of this. Hoooooly crap.

🙁 hope it gets better! And if not, hope it goes quickly.

So many crazy weird cases the past few days. I'm honestly not sure if this should be a rant because wtf or a rave because so far, all are still alive.

Also, two lymphomas, two mammary carcinomas, one SCC, and one osteosarc, all in two days? Wtf. There's a reason I didnt do an oncology residency.

We changed some scheduling around at work, and now we're a person short every day. It's busy when we're not short, so now it's been insane 🙁 It's going to be even more ridiculous tomorrow and Friday, because we'll have two doctors in. Plus Friday we'll be two down all day. I don't see this going well.

I am so tired and want it to be Friday already.

Being understaffed sucks so much. We're just now getting to the point where we're actually staffed properly after like...4 months. Sorry you're having to deal with the stress 🙁

Oh god, four months?! Glad you guys are well staffed now. I can't even imagine four months of this.

Supposedly we have someone starting in May, but they're being really wishy washy about it (and she'd be leaving for a month in the middle of summer... When we will be totally booked daily...), so we'll see how it goes.

New hospital nonsense...crappy scheduling, because our appointment numbers were low we could only have one VA there at a time for a while, which sucks when, for instance, you have back to back appointments and need to discharge patients, even if the pet numbers are low. For some reason we never replaced the girl who was fired early on (until like 3 months later), then we had a receptionist go on a leave of absence that turned permanent and we were just getting around to replacing her.

It probably doesn't help that other than the doctors and 2 of the VAs, everyone on our team including the practice manager was new to the company. And several were new to the field in general.

But anyway...I didn't know people could get hired and then go on vacation for a month that quickly! I would think no one would want to hire someone in that position.

New hospital nonsense indeed! That sounds like a nightmare, glad it's all sorted now.

They know my boss somehow? I don't remember the details. They were originally just suppose to be extra summer help, and work busy days, so the time off wasn't an issue. But now that we are down we need someone daily, and my boss wants it to be them, so now we're crazy for the next month till they hopefully start. They'll only be here for the summer though, so we'll be having to hire two people at once when I leave which is going to suck. Especially cause I'll be the one having to train two people at once 😛

You should suggest your Associate Dean come in at the end time and unplug their mics for a couple lectures. That should shut them up.

For Halloween last year when I was the genie I retaliated on my Micro professor who repeatedly went over in lecture and was just a flat out bad professor. I interrupted his class like you all know (not the one with the video but a different class), came through the side door in the front, literally smoked out the entire lecture hall with my smoke machine, went out the back door, and left.

I like to think I sent a message.

Minor rant: Come on, kids! We're 29 days from graduation and all of you leave for summer! We do not need a drug violation this close to the end of school! 3 hours of my night wasted searching a high kid's room and doing the associated paperwork. At least we found what we were looking for, or else it would have been all for naught.

Just. 29. More. Days.

Come on, kid. Can you make it 29 days without ****in about doing your job?

I kid I kid, you can bitch and moan however much you'd like. That's exactly what this thread is for. But I think you win the award this year for the highest number of rant posts about one's job.

Today's encounter with an undergrad:

UG: "So I heard you're starting school next fall here, what program?"
Me: "The DVM/PhD program, I'm really excited."
UG: "Oh. Did you apply to that because you knew you couldn't get into med school?"

I wish I could say I said something intelligent in response, but I just stared at him for a while and then walked off to get things done. But really?

I bet you're right. lol. What's funny is I love this job about 90% of the time. The other 10% when it goes bad is just ridiculous.

Good luck with the understaffing, @Caiter92 ! It's a chronic problem where I am and it can be so stressful. The only thing that gets us through is focusing, temporarily suppressing the (justified!) WTF IS GOING ON I'M GOING TO KILL SOMEONE feelings, and reminding ourselves that at some point, clients will stop coming in through the door, and we will eventually go home. Things will get done eventually, one way or another. But man does it suck, especially when clients start to get grouchy about waiting.

My hospital is chronically understaffed. We just fluctuate between levels of understaffed. The worst is when assistants complain about understaffing but then act all cliquey to the new people. Being kind of a d-ck to new people doesn't exactly help with the high turnover.

Home visiting my family for the weekend. My mom failed to mention she put out a couple glue traps for a mouse she apparently thinks she has. My cat got her hind leg and tail caught in one. She freaks out, of course. Wouldn't let me catch her. What a blast I had getting her free. Poor kitty.

I feel like there is no such thing as well staffed in vet med. There are always abundant times where things are very busy and there aren't enough techs/doctors. I think it's been a problem at every hospital I've ever worked at, including when I was in school.

Ain't that the truth. Even when we were fully staffed at my old place, it often felt like we were short. When the fecal material hits the fan, you never have enough hands no matter how many people are around.

At this place, though, I'm talking literally short, like we have more doctors taking appointments than we do assistants or we don't have a single person to spare but are accepting emergency after emergency after emergency, and everyone's an hour behind with their regular appointments. We're constantly hiring and still haven't been able to replace a receptionist who left a few months ago. In almost a year, we've lost/turned over about 25-30% of staff. Maybe this is more typical of mid-sized GP practices than I realize, but it doesn't look pretty from the inside.

While I hope that never happens again (and that you mom finds a better way to control mice, glue traps are terrible) oil helps remove fur and feathers from them very well.

Yeah. Vegetable oil got it off. She was just SO panicked that the hardest part was getting her brain back down to earth so I could help her.

I know my mom just didn't think about the potential harm in it, but those traps are horrible and I'm still just annoyed about the whole thing. Getting that nasty glue out from in between her paw pads was ridiculous.

That happened to one of our cats, but with one of those sticky hanging fly traps. One stuck to his tail and entangled him, he had to be bathed to get it all out...luckily he took it really well and didn't mind either the stickypaper or the bath!

Last time I was home, my dad had set glue traps around the house for a mouse, and it was one of the ones with the peanut butter on it. So I come back inside from taking my dog outside, let him off the leash, and before I could even lock the door he stuck his face in the glue trap.

LUCKILY it only got caught a little on his Shih Tzu "beard" but still, it was definitely a momma bear reaction and I immediately removed the trap before it could get worse.

It makes me feel better that this had happened to others. I was feeling so guilty lol

A friend of a friend texted me today with a picture of a large open wound on their dog, and asked what I would do ( since they know I'm pre vet and work in a vet clinic) I told them about 3 times to take it to their vet, because I am not trained to treat it and do not feel comfortable doing so . So , they clean it with Epsom salts instead...

Hookers? Meth pipes? Hundred dolla bills?

My rabbit died tonight. I was really hoping for just one more year. In three months she would have been nine. At least I was awake and with her when she died. 🙁

I'm so sorry. Sending love your way.

We are in a constant state of being understaffed and it was so much worse this past two weeks I feel like I'm going to scream!!! We had a tech who had a planned vacation (no biggie!), one who's grandmother died and was out the whole week dealing with hospice/wake/funeral things (again, not her fault) after asking off for 4 days the week before for traveling with her daughter to a cheer competition, and one who's back decided to give her intense problems where she couldn't walk and was in constant pain (also, not her fault) but all of them happening at the SAME TIME means 3/6 people scheduled weren't there for two weeks solid. SO. the rest of us all came in on our days off, stayed way later than scheduled (and honestly really came together as a team and that part was great) and holy crap I'm tired.

My whole body hurts after my half marathon

But the good kind of hurt, right? 😛

Hope you at least had fun during! Now go eat lots of food and be lazy. If anyone says anything, you get to say, "I just ran 13.1, STFU."

That's what I always do anyway 😀

Dog barking in the apartment above almost non-stop for the last five days. Left a note on their door last night. Complex is closed today. Really don't want to have to call the police on them, but this is getting ridiculous.
