Rant: Took in a stray cat from the neighborhood to be neutered last week. Neuter gone wrong (they told me it was "impossible" to get an e-collar on him) that now has him in the ER due to large clots and excessive bleeding from opening it up not even 10 minutes after we left the clinic (it actually squirted blood like an artery twice on it's own - wtf?!). Four days later, a fever, a transfusion, and several CBCs, and I might be able to get him today without spending over $1000.

Rave: This took place the same day I found out that I got into vet school. Almost like a sign - get used to it 😉

Side note - I have a permanent retainer on the top 4 and bottom 4 teeth in the back. I don't wear a retainer because of it and still have straight teeth - I'd ask them to put it in if you're having issues. Sucks to floss but retainers make your breath god-awful.

ETA: Also, if anyone knows of scrubs that are good for winter/freezing ORs, let me know. I'm already shivering thinking about being anesthesia for those super long surgeries.

Long underwear under scrubs. I have a set of thinsulate that are awesome- very thin, soft, neutral cheetah print but still help with warmth 😀

I liked Cherokee (two piece sets ~$50) until they changed their sizing. Mediums are too tight, larges are like parachute pants on me.

What's the discount amount you have? If I could get a set for maybe $60 I'd probably go for it but that's my max. I also have to invest in shoes which is a whole different battle...

Fleece lined legging. I don't know how I made it this far in life without them. I even wear them under jeans on cold days.

Betabrand
Putting it here for anyone else who wants them too. And they’re actually having a Presidents’ Day sale rn so you can save 20%

I have the bootcut ones
And they’re much thicker than regular yoga pants

AND THEY COME IN LONGSSSSSSS!!!!!
Those look fantastic! I've been looking around for some pants I can keep in my locker because I need something else besides scrubs.

Thanks for the link @SkiOtter.

@SkiOtter - looks like they also have a 15% student discount too year-round. 20% off for the President's day sale.

I second fleece lined leggings under scrubs. I basically wear those or underarmour or thinsulate leggings under my pants everyday in the winter (but I work outside).

Yeahhh scrub tops with a waist are basically just a disaster. Straight a little stretchy are perfect. The stupid band on the greys scrubs thats supposed to sit under your chest either ended up mid-boob for me or if i managed to squeeze it under my chest made me look like a hooker even in the 3x (which then looked ridiculous on the rest of my upper body). So much no. They aren't even that stretchy or soft.

fleece lined leggings are the best. for the record, one can wear multiple pairs under pants if desperate...how i survived equine internal medicine when it was 50 degrees in the barn haha

Speaking of clothing.

I have a job interview coming up and need to figure out how to dress like an adult. FML.

I refuse to wear a pants-suits, they make me feel like a little kid dressing up in her dad's clothes. I'm thinking....nice solid color chiffon blouse and calf-length skirt?

*Goes to pull DVM interview clothing threads, grumbling all the while*

Eh, I don't love scrubs. They're okay. I wear looser scrub tops and jeans to Job #1 underneath my coveralls, and that works really well for me.

For Job #2 I wear more fitted scrubs, and I don't care for them. I'd rather just wear dress slacks and a blouse.

I don't dress up in a full suit. Usually nice pants and a nice blouse. That's it. Pull my hair up, wittle bit of makeup and done.

I had to Google what a chiffon blouse was, but I would say that this is probably good for an interview. I think most of the younger faculty are usually about this level of dress here.
I usually stick with slacks and a button down shirt, and a tie depending of the situation. Hasn't failed me yet.

It concerns me that this is cold for you. I would've killed for 50 degrees on my small ruminant rotation last year 😛

It was in the 80's last week. This 50's crap with wind and rain... rain?? wtf is that even??
It poured buckets all day today. I ordered myself rain boots haha, wish I had the smarts to do it last week!

Also, roughly a month away from clinics. Wish I knew my schedule! We're still waiting.

The statute of limitations of me being okay wearing my wrist splint has officially passed... but it hurts too much as is. :rage::rage::rage: I have an increasing desire to fight someone.

It's been around 32F here the past few days (with a sprinkling of snowflakes one night) and people are complaining bitterly. It never gets below freezing and we are very used to being spoiled by the weather gods.

Good luck!! I'm sure you'll dazzle them with your awesomeness. :luck:

Went to bed anxious about my parasitology exam today, woke up 5 different times in 4 hours to intense wrist pain. Maxed out on ibuprofen and I don’t have anything else in my apartment I can take. Wondering if radiologist read rads wrong and it is broken. Not seeking medical advice, just annoyed and frustrated, and needed to rant.

I still think you should see an orthopedic surgeon sooner than later 🙁

Poor egg. I'm sorry, lovely. That's so crummy 🙁 Stupid bad drivers!! :punch:

Why on earth are Recitation classes mandatory?!?

Classes became available to look at for the Fall 18 semester this past Monday and I was wanting to take Physics and O Chem together this next semester (They are my last classes that are part one & part two) but every flippin' Physics class has a Recitation class on a day that I have to work and can't afford to take off for classes right now.
If the classes are on Tuesday and Thursday, why is there a Recitation on Monday? Super inconvenient for those of us that have to work while attending school. :'(
And I get that they are beneficial, but if we want to be technical, This will be the 3rd time I am taking a General Physics class... (AP Physics in HS and Physics 101 for my AS) I passed the 2 previous classes with A's, so if I can't pass these next two Physics classes, I don't think a recitation class is going to help me. lmao... /Rant

What the heck is a recitation class?

A class to go over material again and help people to understand the material better. They weren't required when I was in school. I went to a few of them when I was having a harder time with a particular course or part of a course.

What the heck is a recitation class?

Apparently it's a class usually taught by a TA or something that goes over the material that the professor taught in previous lectures. Might have homework. Might take attendance. I've heard that some colleges have the recitations optional, but I've verified with my advisor that these Physics recitations are required.... it blows.

That’s kinda cool! I’ve never heard of those before!

We’ve always had our quizzes in recitation classes so they were mandatory
Sorry that it doesn’t work out with your schedule. 🙁 is it possible to take it online somewhere instead?

I probably could take it online elsewhere, or even at the community college. But I have horrible luck with financial aid getting things right and doing the whole paying for 2 schools thing just seems like another opportunity for disaster. Lol I still have another semester or 2 before I get down to my last classes so I can try again and who knows, maybe by then I can cut down to part time work. *fingers crossed*

so I'm about to have our final exams (Thurs/Fri), white coat (Sunday), the OSCE (Monday), and a cumulative exam of years 1-3 of school (Wednesday) + my dog's cardio surgery (for a condition that has never been documented in literature before) is the Thursday of finals week, during my exam. I wouldn't be so stressed if one of the cardiologists didn't keep repeating the fact that she may very well die during this surgery...I get it, please shut up now

What is up with your dog’s heart and how are they fixing it?

So she's got what a "cyst like structure" blocking her aortic outflow along her interventricular septum. It changes size depending on systole/diastole too so they're not totally sure what they're dealing with. She's got some cardiac remodeling as a side effect of that + mitral regurge + subaortic stenosis. Also something about her aortic gradient being out of this world high, so her heart is working overtime and then some just to keep her alive. This is all based on an echo, I'm not sure if they still want to do an MRI, they've mentioned that too.

The ballooning/cutting procedure they're doing has been done before, but apparently there's no literature on the cyst thing specifically. AFAIK they're going to write it up themselves. They've said her anesthesia may kill her, or the actual cutting may go wrong. If she survives the actual procedure, her prognosis may either worsen, not change, or improve. Just a lot of ifs and unknowns so I'm stressing...but I couldn't not do it (they gave me the option). She's got a problem, they're willing to try to give her more years and a normal life (and pro bono). Poor thing isn't even allowed to run right now.

You wouldn't know she was sick though.

I have a Physics recitation class now too and it is mandatory. Honestly, if I didn't have it I would have no teaching at all. Our physics professor is awful! I'm learning from recitation (where the TA is really good and helpful) and on my own. I know last semester the recitation for some of my other sciences were optional. They know this professor is bad! I can't even take it anywhere else because the program I'm in requires I take all my vet prereq sciences here.

We didn't call it a recitation class and it wasn't required by any means, but when I took physics we had MWF lecture with daily homework, and a TA held a session on T, Th, and Sun where he worked the homework problems on the board with us. It's the only reason I managed to do semi-well in Physics.

Ours were always required, but I think only our science courses had them if I remember correctly. Physics didn't, but I remember chem, orgo, and genetics recitations. Also remembering the grad student for my gen chem recitations absolutely butchering it to the point of giving us wrong info. Our professor had to start sitting in on those sessions...

Can't decide if I want to move to a new apartment. Currently my complex wants double what I'm paying now for the same lease (a 7 month lease) which is absurd considering I still have to pay for laundry, parking and all utilities. I really think I would like this place I looked at (free in building laundry, two off street parking spots, brand new kitchen and bathroom, they've already dropped the rent and will consider a 6 month to longer lease) but I'm really just dreading the whole idea of packing everything up again. It's just such a PITA. But then I'd actually in be Providence and within walking distance of one of my gyms, coffee places, some great brunch spots and a brewery...

The second place sounds like a really great place and that the only negative is packing up and moving again
If it were me personally I’d probably move just because it sounds like a much better deal, but that’s just me personally

Oh it is. I think I'm going to tell them that I'll take it since I haven't heard back as to whether or not they'd drop my rent here.

I completed my student loan enrtance counseling tonight...no wonder student loans are so screwed up when a) half of it talked about taking out undergrad loans b) it failed to recognize my professional tuition bill at an OSS cost and c) they don't use terminology correctly in some of their stuff-having taken financing and accounting I do not appreciate the student loan process or the government at this time.😡

Your mistake was actually reading that ****. Just answers their BS questions and move along.
