Yeah, I get migraines, too. It's sometimes hard to tell exactly what is triggering them, isn't it? Sometimes I'll go for months without one, and then I'll have a few in one month. One thing that I do notice is that on those days when I can hardly open my eyes in the morning and really don't want to get up (I know, I know...no one ever wants to open their eyes and get up...but I mean I have this feeling to the extreme on some days)...anyway, those are the days when I tend to get a migraine later in the day. So, at least I have a warning, and sometimes I feel like I can head it off by lingering in bed a little longer and not popping right up. Also, I notice that I tend to get a migraine AFTER some stressful event (like after I've taken an exam or the day after a holiday). Also, if I take Tylenol or Excedrin Migraine right away, at least that can lessen the severity. I also get that visual disturbance (like electric swirling paisley patterns or circles). Once I even had trouble reading. I was literally illiterate. I could see the letters but not make a word out of them in my mind. Aren't migraines annoying!? I hope you can find your triggers so you can find a way to control them.

yeah i thought i had figured out my primary trigger as wheat gluten, took all gluten out of my diet, migraines were a little less, then they got worse again put gluten back in my diet they went away completely for a couple months now it seems stress triggers them, i just dont know how my stress load has changed, im 10 weeks in to vet school and these are the first 2 i have had. i can handle one every now and again but 2 in 3 days is exhausting and much more annoying. i get so i cant think/ compose normal sentences but that is odd and really frustrating that it caused the literacy disconnect, that is one i hope never to experience.

Two migraines in three days is a lot; sometimes when I get some close together like that it means I won't have another one for a while. I hope it's the same for you. I know that the doctor gave me a whole list of foods that might trigger them, but I couldn't really find any correlations. I think sleep deprivation may also be a trigger for me, so maybe for you, too. Just some ideas of things I've noticed for myself. I know everyone is different. Did you ever try breathing into a paper bag to try to reduce the oxygen? That seems to speed up the visual disturbance part (straight to the pounding headache and nausea...fun). If you have any tricks or ideas, let me know. When I'm having one I'm willing to try anything to get it over with. Besides the pain and feeling awful, they are such a waste of time when you're busy (as I know you must be in vet school).

My less major rant than migraines: PS3 error 80010514.

We tried the simple fix. Didn't work. Now it's time to either play no PS3 games (it'll play PS2 games fine... obviously we have an early PS3 model, so we have no warranty), spend $$$ to fix it, or spend $$$$$ on a new system. Yaaaay. At least I got some good gaming out of it this weekend before it did this.

When I was selecting my destinations, I originally clicked like 5, then narrowed it down to my 3. Apparently I somehow deleted Washington and left Illinois. But submitted the Washington supplemental and of course not the Illinois.

I'm pretty upset with myself. And of course, I only figured this out when I just received a rejection letter from Illinois....

Not of which I'm aware! I did actually get a tremendous break (read: free) on the ultrasound. The $350 procedure was comp'd when (apparently) the clinic I use told him I'm a vet student. I wasn't able to be there for the US. I was a little stunned that the ultrasound doc did that.

I don't believe we get a significant (or significant enough) discount at our teaching hospital to make it worthwhile. That said, they certainly have the expertise.....

that was super nice of the ultrasound guy! at my old job even the vets had to pay, though it was an extreme discount 😉 but i would ask at your teaching hospital of any student discounts; here we get 40% off most services (except things like pharmacy unfortunately), and on clinics i'm always hearing the clinicians trying to get owners into one study or another to try and get care for their pets at reduced costs. it can't hurt to ask, right?

You have my sympathies beyond belief. I've had migraines since adolescence. The little gnome with the ice pick that lives behind my eyes is a real pain in my keister. My best guess is that you're suffering due to all the new stress and a possible change in climate. However, 2 in 3 days is somewhat unsettling especially if they're causing you issues that you've never experienced prior. Are the headaches you're getting very different from the ones that you would normally get? If so, seek medical attention NOW. Also, if you're having more cognitive issues that you would normally, or are suffering from any type of facial tingling or visual disturbance, get thyself to the doctor ASAP. that you feel better - SOON!!!

Yeah, seriously. Not to alarm you or anything but a good friend of mine had a brain tumor discovered and removed at age 23. He'd had migraines throughout his life. I should add that he recovered and is doing well now! Better to get that MRI now and eliminate something scary. Feel better!

I don't know why I decided to take immunology, it's not even required for my degree. I had my second exam today, and only got one more question right than the last exam. In any other upper level science course, my score would be great, but this professor just came from a prestigious university and has the harshest grading scale. Poop.

Anyone else see the articles about the exotic animals in Ohio? 48 of 56 animals hunted and killed. Now I'm not saying big cats are not dangerous, but they had to kill all 18 Bengal tigers, like 10 lions and numerous others? That sounds extreme to me.

Just felt like venting. I am a vet school applicant this cycle. Several months ago, I had a Pre-requisite Worksheet completed with an admissions adviser at Western. Was send a completed worksheet, told that I had satisfied all requirements and given the green light to apply. I made the mistake of thinking that this satisfied the "pre-req" Worksheet component of Western's application process. I assumed that the document was placed in my file and went ahead and spend many hours completing the rest of the application. Everything was submitted on time. I hopped a plane and flew to Philly to be with my dying mother with the understanding that all everything was complete. Unfortunately, just minutes after saying my last goodbyes to the woman that brought me into this world, I received an e-mail from Western saying that I was not going to be considered for admission due to the fact that I never copied the Pre-requisites down from the worksheet they created for me and re-submitted them on an identical form. Hard to believe that such a small technical formality could potentially derail a lifelong dream founded upon years of hard work. The school already has all necessary information in order to review my file, both in my transcripts and on the worksheet that they completed for me. But they refuse. Welcome to the machine. At least I still have 4 other schools that I applied to. Nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile... sometimes.

woke up late

didnt really get much sleep during my nap
struggled to not shoot myself in the foot during my physio exam (i kept bubbling wrong answers, circling the wrong one on the page, or x'ing the right one out)
came home and discovered my pants were on backwards the entire day (not sure how i missed that!!!)
made chicken for dinner-and halfway through discovered part was still raw!!

so i vowed to do NOTHING else for the rest of the night, because i think i've done enough damage for one day haha

Agreed. I definitely feel sorry for those animals, but if anyone were to be blamed for this, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that it should be law enforcement. The wacknut psycho pretty much pulled the trigger himself by owning these animals and not having them secured (intentional or otherwise). Six of the freed animals were recaptured and taken to a zoo. That to me at least shows that they tried to keep the animals unharmed if they could.

That said, I think/feel/believe [insert whatever word suits your fancy] that they, law enforcement and animal experts, should have at least tried to tranquilize the animals. They didn't, unless you count the one tiger that they darted and when it didn't immediately drop, they shot and killed.

I'm more angry with the fact that this ***** was even allowed to have these animals in the first place. People have zero business owning a wild animal of any kind.

It's not actually as easy to do this humanely as you might think, especially in the dark in an unenclosed area with the imminent threat to human and domestic animal life. I agree with you that it's sad that it had to come to that, and the idiot who owned the animals was completely irresponsible and shouldn't have had them in the first place, but the law enforcement doesn't really deserve scorn for what they had to do either. I highly doubt they enjoyed it.

I don't think that LIS was trying to be condescending or mean. It's hard to judge tone on the interwebs. She wasn't demanding justification, just trying to get you to think about the situation. I'm sure there were other ways they could have gone about it, whether or not they would have been more successful will forever be unknown. I do think it's unfortunate that it was done this way, but I don't disagree with the decision that they made.

I hope that you don't think that everyone is out there to be rude, most people aren't, and again, I don't think LIS was trying to be rude. However, you're going to run into those people who are snarky and rude pretty much everywhere you go. I've learned that it's a lot easier to adjust how you respond to this kind of person than to try to make them realize their faults. Anyway, gotta get back to schooling.

Hopefully this will encourage strict legislation against privately owned wild animals. I am most angry with law enforcement because this guy was on their radar for some time and yet they sat idly by, doing nothing, until he snapped forcing their hand and the slaughter of 49 animals.

So, yes, law enforcement can't be blamed for protecting the public when push came to shove; however, I do blame them for not being proactive about the situation and working through proper channels to get these animals out of that guys hands long before he set them loose on the residents of Ohio. Especially since he had threatened at least once before to release them. The guy was a felon for crying out loud, not exactly a shining example of an upstanding, law-abiding citizen.

I have thought a lot about the situation, something I question whether law enforcement in Ohio did before they went off shooting the animals. However, as you said, we will never know if another solution would have been more successful.

Prevention was the key here, and I can only hope laws will change as a result.

I, too, wish there were some other way to deal with what happened, and I wish that way involved many more of the animals surviving. My guess is that it's not likely for small-town police departments like those in Zanesville to carry tranq guns and darts and drugs that can bring down a 600lb grizzly. Every minute spent waiting for tranq guns means expending the search area. I think they were losing daylight and they were concerned more about the potential human life lost than anything else.

Does that mean it doesn't suck? Nope. I think it's an absolute shame that this donkey-booty and his wife were allowed to operate this "sanctuary". When I lived in Columbus, I seem to remember either a wolf or a bear escaped and even then people were clamoring for them to be shut down, as they'd already had several run-ins with the law. Jerks. 😡

Definitely a tragic situation (especially for the dead animals)....I am not sure how to "judge" the police in this situation. They probably could have tried harder to save the animals (but we don't know for sure), but it is hard to blame them when they have to ensure human safety first and foremost. I doubt they are adequately trained to deal with this situation.

I have seen posts in the past that "tranq-ing" animals is not as easy as we might think, but again, I really don't know.

On the other hand, I do not agree with the blanket statement that people should be banned from exotic ownership. This was a bad example no doubt, butI have seen private operations that I was happy to see the way the animals were treated. Having said that, I wouldn't mind some stricter regulations about who can own dangerous exotics (animal abusers...no, felons....no), and what safety precautions they should take. But banning? Absolutely not.

I just don't think Joe Public needs to own exotic wild life. Particularly, large predatory cats and bears. If a person is running a sanctuary, a real one, and has the proper training to deal with the wild life that's great and I'm ok with that. For instance anyone owning exotics must go through some type of certification and obtain licensing that requires inspections of their facilities and animals routinely. Any lapse in inspections or infractions means they lose their licensing and animals. Once the license is revoked that's it.

This creep had already had several run-ins with the law and it was reported that the animals lived in filth, not to mention previous escapes by some of the animals. I don't care how much you profess to love an animal, if you can't provide proper housing and a sanitary living environment complete with adequate and proper nutrition, then you shouldn't get to keep it.

It's a shame that it takes a tragedy of this scale to set the wheels in motion for regulations to occur.

I heard on the news this morning that the wife wants the 6 surviving animals returned to her. After what they've been through, I tend to think they deserve a better life. Just my opinion though.

There was a guy in the library sitting beside me the other day that cleared his throat every minute or so. It drove me up the wall and made focusing on my chemistry cramming very difficult. I can't imagine having to sit through a lecture listening to that.

it was extremely peeving to listen to. thus i hopped on the internet and tuned him out haha. he was telling us about what happens if you fail or need an academic break or decelerated load. even though i am not at all in that boat, it was stressful to listen to!

I'd hardly call my response ranting, though I'll cop to it having a mildly sarcastic tone. You criticized their response; I asked what you'd suggest they do instead. What's so harsh about that? Why all the defensiveness when someone asks what you'd do that they didn't do?

I completely agree with you that I wish there was another way, but the fact remains that there isn't. Your "Excuse me for my poor choice of words" (which IS sarcastic) kinda spells out the problem: if you meant to say something differently, then do so; but don't yell at me for taking your words at face value, ok? I can't get in your head and guess what you meant.

I think that if you looked into how effective tranquilizing animals is, you'd realize that it's not a very safe solution. Dosing isn't as simple as "load a particularly sized dart and fire." You can easily under- or overdose the animal, and either one can have unfortunate results for not only the animal but the people around. Anyone who has done much anesthesia knows that animals go down differently. Some panic. Do you want to risk shooting an animal and having a panic response to the drug in a populated area? (That's not a loaded question. Some people would say "Yes, we should risk it." I wouldn't, and I suspect most people wouldn't, but it's not an absolutely indefensible position.)

I'm not anonymous - many people here know who I am. Nor was I attacking you. You posted an opinion, I challenged it. Big deal.

Anyone who has done much anesthesia knows that animals go down differently. Some panic. Do you want to risk shooting an animal and having a panic response to the drug in a populated area?

Hard enough to not get injured by the 10lb kitty with adverse ketamine reaction.

Not sure they would use ketamine in a sedative on a tiger since I have never worked with them but the image of an adverse ketamine reaction in a tiger is scary.

Oh dear... OK, going to stick my feet into the water here... The tragedy earlier this week has provoked lots and lots of angry discussion as well it should. As someone who has tranquilized large animals, I have to say that I was initially GREATLY disappointed with what occurred; and was initially down right angry. However, after I thought about it and learned about the amount of animals, the terrain, darkness, weather, etc... I now know that it would have been nearly impossible for those involved to safely tranquilize all of the animals.

For a safe tranquilization, the darters would have had to know several things about the creatures - approximate weight and age are just two the basics. Additionally, not all anesthetic agents are safe for all creatures. For instance, ketamine can easily be used for monkeys; but for large cats, a mixture of substances (ie: alpha-2 agonist and a CNS depressant) are used in order to provide a better anesthetic event. One must also take into account that when an animal is under stress that LESS anesthetic is necessary because they metabolize it much more quickly. The real issue is that the animal doesn't immediately fall to the ground... Once hit, it runs - FAST. Darting those creatures in the dark, in the rain, may have very well caused them to suffer horrific injury that may have ended in the same tragic way. Thus, the best way to have tranquilized the animals would have been to perform a capture of some type and then dart. Local authorities do not have the proper equipment, nor the proper training, to handle such a situation and I would like to think that they simply did what they were able in order to prevent an awful situation from becoming a nightmare of unprecedented proportion. It's all beyond sad; and I hope that lessons are learned across all boards from this.

I think the real downfall here comes from the fact that local authorities seem to have been somewhat forced into the situation. Although I do not know for certain, it appears that the Fish and Wildlife folks weren't as heavily involved as I would have hoped. These are the people, along with the good folks at the Columbus Zoo, who would have had the proper equipment to perhaps handle the situation with more ease. But, given the conditions dealt at the time of the 'escape', I fear that several lives would have been lost regardless of whom had gotten involved. 🙁

I'm thinking that the only good that can come from this are the lessons learned. For example, the owner of these animals apparently had had several run-ins with the law previously when animals had escaped. It was a bad situation to begin with in which he wasn't taking the best care and precautions. Perhaps now there will be vigilance on the part of the law and inspectors regarding people keeping wild animals. Only time will tell.

Moving away from the discussion on the crazy man with the zoo.

I'm so tired of having it rubbed in my face that I'm single. Everywhere I go people are talking about their boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses. There's a semi-formal coming up and I have no one to go with. Most of the people in my class are in serious relationships. It just sucks because it's not like I have a whole lot of time to go out and meet people. I feel like because I'm single now, I'm destined to be single forever. Boo.
