Boo, I have a cold too... chills, sore throat, cough, congestion, headache, fatigue... Woke up at 11 am yesterday, fell asleep by 11 pm (yes, 12 hours later), and woke up at 8 am today. Then I took an hour-long nap (maybe more...) this afternoon.

I actually cancelled my shadowing tomorrow morning (I've only cancelled twice ever). No bueno.

I hope you get over your cold soon, TT! I want to see that nose piercing!
 
So, last Tuesday in o-chem lab, we were doing a lab where we had to use the different graphs to determine two unknowns. The first was fine and I did it without too much trouble. The second one, however, the professor couldn't get the MS spectrum to work, and he told me that he would do it again and get me the graph on Wedsnday. So, on Friday, I emailed him and asked him if he got the graph to work, but I still have no response. On top of that, I have no idea what the structure could be because the other two graphs don't exactly match up with anything. To make things even better, I have a lab report on it due Tuesday and I have class during his office hours tommorrow.

On the side, does anyone know a good free program to draw the structures on the computor?

I was so tempted to punch this idiotic client at work today. Not that I would have done anything, of course, but I don't think I've been this angry because of a work situation before. And the vet was 10x angrier than I was. This guy called yesterday, brought his dog in this afternoon. Turns out, dog hasn't eaten in 3 days and was drinking frequently and really lethargic. Of course it's on a Sunday when we close earlier than usual and only have one doctor. We did rads, dog was definitely obstructed, something in the stomach and possibly duodenum... double checked with ultrasound, then told owner we needed to do emergency surgery. Owner is all for it till he sees the estimate ... 'what, 3000 dollars for a dog? That's crazy!!!' At this point, we thought he was just in shock but joking. Then he turns to his dog, completely serious and not at all upset, and tells him, we're putting you to sleep now, we'll get another lab who doesn't cost as much. 😱 This is a 7 year old lab, but aside from being obstructed (and needing to undergo a surgery very likely to be successful) and quite a fatty, he was an overall healthy and sweet dog. I turn away to prevent myself from glaring at him, the vet somehow manages to keep a straight face and explain the severity of the current situation but the dog would get through it. He proceeded to spend the next 30 minutes in a rage over how expensive this was and angry that we wouldn't put his dog down. We offered to pay for the surgery (using a fund that we usually reserve for people who can't afford big procedures)... but turns out wasn't even the issue. He had an expensive car and clearly had the money, but seemed so angry at this dog for eating the foreign object that he didn't want the dog to be treated, regardless of whether he got it for free or not. His wife over the phone unfortunately thought along the same lines - if we did the surgery now, the dog would just eat something else and it would happen all over again in a month. So might as well just avoid the hassle and put the dog to sleep. We can just get another one. 😡😡😡
I was boiling, and at this point it was just hearing the conversation from the other room! The dr kept refusing to do the euth, so he said that he would take the dog home and the object would just pass on its own - even when the dr assured him it wouldn't, he decided he was right and the dog would just get through it, the thing would make its way through the intestines and out the other end, that had happened in the past with toys. Eventually after quite a bit of arguing, he reluctantly agreed to let us do the surgery (and have us pay for it, of course, since we were forcing this terrible thing upon him). Several hours later, I triple-bagged a long pair of smelly acid-coated argyle socks that the doctor had removed from the stomach so that we can save them to show the owner, who will pick up the dog later this week because he doesn't have time to get him now.
Really glad that the dog is better, but I feel awful for the poor dog's future with owners like that. And also that these stupid people should have some consequence for what happened - dog swallows socks, refuse surgery, get free surgery, then take unwanted dog back. There are way too many times the past couple months that I've been wishing that pet owners needed to pass a test showing they are aware of the costs and responsibilities of having a pet, and take some kind of vow that they won't do such stupid evil things. I guess I'll just have to keep wishing...
 
This is nothing compared to the above post, but I feel like ranting anyway.

I can't find a single picture of myself where I'm looking at the camera without sunglasses on. What he heck. If I don't find something soon, Auburn will be getting a picture of me with pink hair.

ETA: Okay, so I found something that works. But, I also found out that I accidentally critiqued and sent DVMDream SOMEONE ELSE'S personal statement. Talk about epic fail. To be fair, I had Personal Statement.doc and Personal Statement.docx on my desktop at the same time... I just opened the wrong one. Blargh.

I'm not adding $20 for one silly school that wants to know what I look like. :d I know Miss asked very nicely, but it's a bit weird so I decided not to send one to them. That, and I ran out of photo paper.

No pink hair for interviews. Not that brave. Brown all the way!
 
For Mississippi they take a picture of everyone on interview day anyway. Oh and definitely good decision on the hair...we had a couple of girls come in with pink and orange hair for the coating ceremony, and they weren't allowed to be coated at that time and weren't allowed in our picture...

It would be nice if he would at the least take from this experience that he should put his socks in the hamper. He was so mad at the dog but it was obviously part his fault too. 🙁
 
I am a newbie and just introduced myself on another thread. I am excited I found this thread! I know this is only my second post and completely understand if no one replies. I just need to write about the Illinois supplemental app. Everything started so easy. Until I began the essay question. I have wrote 3 of them so far but do not like any! I don't want to sound uneducated or uninformed but that is how I think I come off! Oh well, I just need to clear my head, buckle down, and send one! Thanks everyone!
 
I am TRYING to finish up some apps tonight (and procrastinate on SDN) and my cable/internet is constantly going in and out! This is not only annoying as it is making my SDN surfing less efficient, but I am seriously worried about hitting submit on something only to have the internet mess it up!

At least I can see my wireless router from the couch and can see the lights go out when the internet isn't working...
 
Before you submit, just copy everything and put it into notepad. If the internet craps out, it will still be there.
 
Small rant... apparently I've been spelling "etc." wrong for the past... 10 years and NOBODY on my blog, facebook, msn messenger, etc., has pointed out to me that it's not spelled "ect."

The tutor at the writing center pointed this out to me while she was helping me with my supplemental app. That would have been SO BAD if I had submitted it without going to her first.

Don't worry...I was with a friend in high school and we were waiting in line at the snack bar. I asked her what she was getting and she said a prenzel. I am like what is that? She says you know a PRENZEL! I go I have no clue what a prenzel is. So then she says a prenzel and outlines the shape of a pretzel with her fingers. I am like OH you mean a Pretzel...and she says no its a prenzel. :facepalm: Turns out she used to say that as a little kid and her parents thought it was cute so they never told her that it was actually pronounced pretzel. 😛

I always have to think that the word is actually etcetera, so that I can spell the abbreviation right. For some reason, I can remember that better than whether it is ect or etc. I have seen people do it before though. I don't think they are going to reject you based on a single typo.

Haha thats how I said it when I was little too. My mom got frustrated when I wasn't happy that she kept handing me pencils. Definitely outgrew it long before HS though...:laugh:
 
I absolutely bombed my first gen chem II quiz 🙁 Only twenty points but still...

I told myself that I'm the NEW, studying, hard-working me and that if I get more crap grades the adcoms will think my ES is a lie and reject me. The NEW, studying, hard-working me read the first chapter (of three) and did every single chapter problem. Exam is next Wednesday (a week earlier than I had written down?!) so I have time. I WILL ace that exam.

I feel like I am going to have very little time to work on these supplementals. I literally just come home from work (8:35 currently) and I have to be back at work at 8:30AM tomorrow (I have to leave at 8) and I work tomorrow until 7:30PM. Luckily, I have Thursday off but I was really wanting to get these apps in before then. Grrr...Oh well I guess I will just have to submit them later than I wanted to (or stay up really late tonight).

Thanks for the support guys 🙂 I knew coming into this that I would be lucky to get one offer, so I'm not too bummed just yet.

TT, yeah, already, haha. My GPA is below a 3.2, which is the cut-off for an early review in which the decide to reject you or send you forward. Part of me wonders how thoroughly they review everything, but I'm not going to let myself wonder about that. I still have seven more to hear from, so I won't let this get me down!

I think I do deserve some sort of award for first rejected person of the application cycle, though!

that redhead, you must just be THAT MUCH too good for them. Don't worry about it. 🙂

*hugs Red* The best part is CSU swears... SWEARS! in their workshops... that "there is no GPA cut off for our application review process. Anything below a 3.2 is usually not competitive." I will go break something in A/Z for you tomorrow. 😀

Oh just call the people at TMDSAS or wherever you send them this year. Might even try calling the school. Last year they all had 'Pending' listed well after the deadline, so, yah. They don't update that status page until they receive EVERYTHING from you. So you'll be sitting there one day and a stiff wind will blow, you'll then check your page and they'll have all your info on there, that they've received everything, and have all your GPAs and what not all laid out nicely. Until that day, IIRC, it's a soul-crushing blank page with maybe a GRE score. At least they do put your name though so you know you've logged into the correct blank account.

Just call A&M if you haven't done so already. They'll tell you if you need to call TMDSAS or if they've had them sent over already.

CSU was my first rejection last year. I made it past the early review, only to log in in December to find a big fat rejection. I was pretty pessimistic about my chances of getting into other schools if my own state's school didn't want me.

But I ended up getting into 2 other schools, and I absolutely love where I am now. I think the only disadvantages of not ending up at CSU are the higher price tag, and being far away from friends and family. However, I think how much I absolutely love Western more than makes up for the downsides.

Don't worry. The right school will accept you.
 
I HATE being sick. There is a cold going around the first years right now and I seem to have caught it. What makes it worse is the timing. We have 4 tests and 4 quizzes over this week and next. The last thing I need while trying to study is a cold.

That's what I was thinking. Makes me glad that I didn't apply to Colorado. If I had gotten that this early in the game, I'd probably be in the corner bawling my eyes out :laugh:

But seriously, that redhead, CSU is crazy for not taking you and I'm sure that you will get in at one of your other schools 🙂

I'm sorry RedHead... As you can see, there are lots of us that didn't get any love from CSU last year either. I'm such a glutton that I am waiting for my third rejection from them! Fingers crossed for some good news from the next school for you!:xf:
 
I'm so tired of people believing everything on the internet. There is a difference between a reliable source and just using Google. And there have been so many instances this week with people using it (and not just Dr. Google, but in other parts of my life, too). Is it too much to ask that people question their sources?

It's 2am. It was unseasonably warm today and couldn't fall asleep. I have nausea on top of my cold and my stomach is KILLING ME. Looks like I won't be making my 8:40 class. Since upset stomach isn't enough to get me a doctors note, I have to be in anatomy lab at 12:50 and be present for my anatomy quiz at 4. I only slightly prepared for both because hey, I had a 2.5 hour break tomorrow after first class that I was going to use to prepare for them.

My honours super visor wanted me to lug a plant light rack and 100+ snails in their individual cups upstairs to see if the increased light and temp will cause them to shed parasites, but I'm just not up to it. Didn't want to do it in the first place... I personally think that the snails that haven't shed after the 5 days I had them will never shed and it's wasting my time, but who cares what I think... kinda nervous about telling him that I probably won't get to that tomorrow due to my cold, lack of sleep, and nausea.

Debating on whether to do some anatomy now... the bright computer light is helping me not think about my stomach though.
 
I hate when you're feeling fine and just sitting minding your own business and then you sneeze and now everything is stuffed up. This is not what I wanted, especially not two days before a test!
 
thus increasing my anxiety and the already ridiculous amount of pressure I put on myself...

Application cycle number 2, (last one 2008) now I will have a master's degree and lots of diverse experiences including research. Please universe, help me get in. this time. If I dont, please make me wake up one day and decide i don't need to go to vet school any more or be anxious like this ever again.

I am a firm believer in the idea that everything happens for a reason. Though we may not see it yet, there's always a reason! I too applied to CSU, though under normal circumstances I guess? Didn't realize they had that early admissions thing... but if they are going to reject me too (which I FULLY anticipate) I would rather know now than have to wait a few more months :scared:. When people who do not know vet school stuff ask me where I applied and knownig my academic history go "OH! you can get in ANYWHERE!" I calmly correct them... and then compare CSU acceptance rate for OOS applicants to winning the lottery. I think I have a better chance of winning some lottery actually. I guess my "rant" would be along the lines of how the general public (ie. my parents) are like you can go anywhere you want! They mean well, but I am not sure what fantasy world they're living in. They also think I am going to for sure get into Penn because its my IS. I just laugh at this point... what can yah do!?
 
I graduated from college this past May and I just received in the mail all of the information about paying back my student loans.....

It will only take 15 years to pay off my undergraduate debt!! Oh well, better get used to it because I am going to be in debt for a loooooong time.

Yeah, I completely understand where you're coming from on all counts. The early admissions is actually a review process for students applying with <3.2 cum GPA, which I definitely have. They then either reject you early or put you in with the other applications for further consideration.

I find it frustrating too that people are overly optimistic sometimes. I love my parents dearly and their support is so important but telling me, "I know you'll get in." just...eh. Can you also tell me the winning lottery numbers and when I'll get married and...? 🙂
 
I'm sorry redhead, thats disheartening, keep your head up though, hopefully someone else picks you up!

I understand about the whole parent issue thing too! My parents are set on me getting in to vet school the first time and my mom has this delusion that its going to be cheaper then undergrad because I can get people to sponsor me.... dont know where she got that idea 🙄 I keep trying to let her know about Plan B (which essential involves more school and applying over and over again...)
 
My mom just told me that if I don't get into vet school, I won't be able to afford to move to PEI and gain residency. If I don't get in, I'll have to live at home for a year and work at the call center to pay off my loan. My mom and I don't get along very well, so this would kill me.

So I'm freaking out a lot now.

I really don't want to apply for a masters. But I'd do a masters over living at home for a year... that's how much I don't want to go home!

My second choice would be vet tech. But if I apply my mom's logic, I'm still going to be living at home when I graduate. Techs make minimum wage to $14 an hour and instead of being $45 000 in debt, I'll be $65 000 in debt.

Am I really this bad off???

A lot of people on here don't bat an eye at applying OOS... and they can't all be independently wealthy. There must be a student loan or a bank loan out there somewhere that will let me apply internationally.

If I didn't get into vet school, my plan was to move, work, and think research back-up plans. I'm going to have to start looking into other programs now... and I really don't have the time. My courseload and my thesis is KILLING me.

One of the reasons why I'm $45 000 in debt is because of our stupid student loan program. They gave me $10 000 my first year. That covers tuition and living expenses. It does not cover food, transportation, trips home, clothes, ect. My parents are supposed to give me $3 000 towards that and they don't. So I got a job. I make about $2 000 during the school year at my job. YAY. Instead of giving me $10 000, student loan starts giving me $7 000. D'oh. So now I have $31 000 in loans and $15 000 on my line of credit. I really have no sweet clue how it got so high. I don't drink it away or buy designer clothes. But I guess books, cabs to and from work, trips on the bus home, personal items, monthly bus passes, gifts, school supplies, furniture, internet, gerbils, bowling... could add up over three years?

I'm not sure if this made any sense, but it felt kinda good to get off my chest.

I should really be asleep now, but I have a lab quiz in biochem that I have to study for... and I'm chemistry illiterate, so it's going to take me a while.

ETA... my wording kinda sucks, but I got less than 6 hours of sleep last night and I feel like a zombie. I'll get around to fixing it October 9... which will be the next time I get to sleep in.
