"Due to student demand the Honours presentations scheduled for tomorrow will be postponed to a later date in January"

I was sooooo ready to present tomorrow!!! I spent the last four days putting together a powerpoint and you tell me the day before that it's postponed.

I have a feeling that the "student demand" is just one student and I know exactly who it is. She told my labmate that one of the profs had jury duty and couldn't attend :/

Oh the joys of attending a really small cliquey university.

Thanks. I just upgraded my homeagain account so they will send fliers to everyone and their mother. About to head out to post fliers around the neighborhood.

We were up 3-0 going into the third! How did we lose 5-3!? Nooooo!

(The above references the Canada vs Russia IIHF WJC gold medal game. Which just ended. And we lost.)

There was a parvovirus outbreak at one of the facilities where I volunteer 🙁. It's a full-blown breeding/training kennel for service dogs and pretty much all of the puppies in the puppy kennel have parvo. 4 puppies have died so far and the center is sending out many of the puppies to emergency clinics. I spent the afternoon testing parvo positive puppies for giardia...if they didn't already have enough to worry about. I really hope they are able to turn this crisis around soon.

I'm convinced my cat is dead or stolen (do people steal cats?). He wouldn't even cross the road and leave our property, and now he has been gone over two days.

What's friggin' weird is that last week a cat that looks identical to mine showed up at my mom's house a couple towns away. It was skinny and super friendly. I had it scanned and no chip. We were all going out of town, I couldn't find anyone to look after it, and it was freezing outside, so I took it to the shelter where I knew it wouldn't die from freezing to death. I feel responsible for the cat. I visited the shelter today to look for my cat and said 'hi' to the stray. It will be up for adoption tomorrow. Strange timing for this cat to come into my life and mine to disappear, and they look the same and are the same age.

Edit: Coyotes steal cats.

Is it possible something may have scared him off? Last year, a stray showed up in my parents' backyard. We scanned him, and he was chipped. As it turned out, the cat had been missing for close to a month and had traveled 30 miles. Across two highways. The owner was shocked (he was also one of those cats that never left his property)... we have a huge problem with coyotes and fisher cats, and she didn't think there was any way he could possibly be alive. He'd lost a ton of weight, but was otherwise healthy.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you... :xf:

Sorry to hear about your kitty.... sending positive thoughts and vibes your way....

OK.... meeting: my boss and other directors at where I work to discuss how we are spending a decent chunk of funding we just received.... kind of a huge deal with deadlines attached.

Get to the point that we are finalizing things and my boss walks out. Just leaves. Seriously? Takes his laptop and walks out. I looked at my co-workers and asked what that was all about... "oh... he just does that"

:wow:

REALLY!?!??!?!? How rude is that?!?!?!? You're my BOSS for God's sake. I don't think that it's an acceptable practice and to hear that everyone has just accepted it as ok floors me....

If there's a contest for the world's worst boss... he'd win. In a heartbeat.

Sorry for my continual rants about work but really.... this whole job... I love my job.... I love what I get to do... but the powers that be.... well... how they got there, I have NO clue. There are just situations every now and again (like said example above) that leave me puzzled at how to even process what just happened....

shoot. that is terrible. I have my fingers crossed for all the young ones! Parvo is such a hard thing to have to watch.

OMG I had no idea what fisher cats are, but some of those pics I googled looked mean!

I'll keep that story in mind. When going around the neighborhood yesterday a neighbor told me about her blind cat that disappeared for three months and then reappeared one day. It's just hard not knowing anything. We have deer and racoons here, but haven't seen a coyote since the drought two years ago.

=shudders= They freak the crap outta me. They really do sound like screaming babies in the night. And unlike most wild animals, they don't run away from cars. Caught one in the headlights, it moved to the side of the road, sat there and looked at me, and started walking alongside my car as I inched past. I was like 2 houses from home and I was terrified to get out of the car because I didn't know where it had gone. And my poor dog, I wouldn't even let her outside to go the bathroom for like 2 hours after that, even though she was begging at the door.

I was less terrified when the dog and I met up with the neighborhood bear, face to face.

I hate electronic forms of communication. HATE IT. Lately, people have been taking my status comments WAAAY too seriously.

For example:

Friend of mine saw someone we graduated with panhandling.
I said that it sucked and I noticed that more grads were making stupid life choices than I thought would (pretty much my exact words)
Two people told me to stop dumping on my hometown and stop being negative.

If I were dumping on my hometown... I probably would have said something like "EVERYONE from this town are making stupid choices... probably because it's a horrible town to grow up in."

What I said was... the truth?

The fishers skeeve me out big time. They're rather large and imposing, and you can hear them shrieking in the woods at night.

One of my mom's friends used to breed cats... a fisher actually BROKE INTO HER HOUSE while she was working and killed every single one of her cats. 🙁

I'd rather deal with the coyotes, and I actually had a pack of them surround me and chase me back to the house a couple of years ago. (Stupid neighbor owns a restaurant and throws the leftovers into the woods between our houses to feed the wildlife... so they have a tendency to acclimate and become dangerous. 😡)

This is really a minor rant, but is it really necessary to have assignments and reading to go over before the semester begins? A couple weeks ago I would of been happy with something to do, but I'm going on a fun trip this weekend and will have cute goat babies to play with any day now.

Wow, that is a crazy story. I didn't even know they made that noise...they were scary enough without it but that's just over-the-top scary for a small animal like that!

WTF, about both stories! Are you kidding me?

WTF, about both stories! Are you kidding me?

My parents came out afterwards (they assumed I was overreacting), and the coyotes attempted to surround all three of us. I think they were overpopulated and starving at that point... they'd completely decimated the small mammal populace and the town had just distributed new coyote-proof trash cans, so they were basically stuck with what the neighbor had to offer. And people. They disappeared soon after, but thanks to the neighbor, we now have a new pack that's moved into the area :bang:. These coyotes are smaller and far more skittish. Hopefully, they'll stay that way!

We just got a new fisher, too. No idea what's going on. When we moved here back in '99, the place was crawling with small animals, and we loved it. Now, all we have are coyotes, fishers, and the occasional raccoon, squirrel, or possum... and this is an improvement over the past few years. 😕

This is petty, but quite irritating to me at the moment. My sister posted a pic of me and my foster baby opossums to her facebook page yesterday. Some old lady on her friends list makes a point to post this big long comment about how much she hates opossums and how they should be made into soup, shot with shotguns, and all they do is spread rabies around, etc etc. WTF? I don't even know her, I obviously care a great deal about the creatures because in the pic there are about four of them perched on my shoulders, and she goes off on an animal-hating rant that only shows how ignorant she is (it is extremely rare for an opossum to contract rabies). I wanted to go off about it, so I simply commented back that opossums do not carry rabies and that it is illegal to shoot an animal. Now other people on my sister's friend list that I don't know are jumping on board to defend the opossum-hater. *sigh* 😡

I saved an opossum the other day! I work at a county shelter and apparently you can bring any animal to be euthanized there. A guy had an opossum in a trap and was taking it to be euthanized and I yelled at him, told him we wouldn't take it and told him to release it in a field. He didn't like being told to scram from a woman and it lead to a screaming match in the parking lot. But at the end I won and the opossum was saved!

Sorry about the crazy lady :-( I feel like people frequently don't understand that wildlife is supposed to be there!

Thank you. She has proceeded to keep posting condescending remarks regarding the food chain and this being the "real world" and implying that the vegan lifestyle is irrational, etc., even though I said nothing about veganism or vegetarianism. I just want her to not say she hates opossums on a picture of me with my opossums. It is actually bothering me to the point of tears that she could be so rude and insensitive. 🙁 I can understand if she doesn't like opossums but I don't understand the complete lack of concern for others.

I'm glad you saved the opossum, that makes me feel better.

The last update said that the shelter medicine experts from UC Davis were consulting with them, so hopefully they will help get the outbreak under control soon. (and on a happier related note, I am so jealous that you live close enough to volunteer on campus! I am totally going to try and line up an externship with them while I'm in school!)

Cautionary Tail, your neighbour sounds like a royal pain in the backside. Why can't people understand that feeding wild animals that are big enough to injure you is a bad idea?

Here in Nova Scotia, the government put a bounty on coyotes this year after a young woman was killed by coyotes in the Cape Breton Highlands. Coyote attacks are of course rare, but people got up in arms about it, got totally paranoid about every coyote spotted anywhere near humans and demanded something be done. So now the government expects to trap and kill up to half of our estimated population of 8000 coyotes this year. This will allegedly teach coyotes to avoid people.

Argh. So many things wrong with that idea.

I spent a lot of time in the Highlands this summer doing research and though we saw coyote sign nearly every day in our fairly remote study areas, I only saw coyotes once. That was at a popular hiking trail, where two half-grown pups ran up to our truck and hung around for a few minutes. Nooo, they've never been fed by humans. People just don't get it. I spoke with a nearby park ranger, and he told me they were probably going to have to shoot those two, as they were nearly certain to cause an incident sooner or later.

Here at home, I can go up to our pasture after rain or fresh snow and nearly count on seeing coyote tracks, but they've never bothered the horses, and I've only seen one once in five years of living here. We hear them howling pretty regularly though.

I'm so frustrated with people who seem to think that coyotes are evil and automatically want to eat us. But most "problem coyotes" - well, most "problem animals"! - end up that way because of humans.

We've been having problems with "overly friendly" coyotes here as well. There's a pack in a local park (in CLEVELAND) close to my apartment, where I run in the summers. At least 3 dogs that come to our clinic have been bitten by coyotes in said park while walking with their owners. YIKES.

I've revised my routes to avoid running there at dawn and dusk, to say the least.

Somewhat related, I was just walking my dog and she picked up a little bone outside, probably from a rabbit but stripped raw. This was in the bushes in my complex, just a few steps away from peoples' houses. She's found several of these in the last couple weeks and I have to steal them from her. It's weird to imagine coyotes in such an urban environment next to a busy street and around so many people.

😕?What is going on? Hope everything is ok...

It was my second day of co-chair training, and I made a stupid mistake for a half second. Hillary was involved and she can spot those mistakes. And she did.😳 But I'm okay, nothing bad. Just shook me up some. The week got a lot better as I got used to everything.

See ya monday!

There's something similar happening in Nevada with black bears: http://www.rgj.com/article/20101204/NEWS/101204013/Panel-votes-to-establish-Nevada-s-first-bear-hunt

Not that anyone was killed, but supposedly it will help the bears avoid people. 👎

I am sooo sick of this coyote thing too. People I have talked to seem to ignorant and stupid about the whole thing. I joined a FB group against the cull... the stupid... it hurts. Too many stupid people going on about we should kill the coyotes because they're killing their pet cats (keep your cats inside, idiot) or about how they are scared that they're children will get eaten while out playing and how they're not native and therefore should be killed. I wouldn't call them introduced... didn't they migrate here on their own over x number of years? I don't know what the word for that is... they aren't invasive and they aren't introduced... so why is it wrong for them to be here?

On the plus side, I heard a few people on the bus discussing about how unnecessary the cull is.

It's sooo sad... that girl who was killed was a nature lover and would not have wanted anything done to the coyotes on her behalf. Her mom started an organization to help with education and conservation.

Also... I don't think anyone know the details on how she was killed. She was listening to music while running... maybe she didn't hear them because of that and just got too close. Maybe when they threatened her, she did everything you SHOULDN'T do to instead of everything you SHOULD do to try to scare them off.

I'm sick and tired of the whole thing. Hence the rant.

In New Brunswick, a woman and her puppy were attacked a couple of years back outside of their house. When the coyote pounced on her, she could feel it's ribs. She realized that the poor creature was STARVING and instead of feeling hate, she felt bad for the animal. She had minor injuries and I think her puppy was okay.

I didn't know you were doing the co-chair thing, that's great! 🙂 Haha if Hillary is involved, enough said 🙄 Glad you're ok. Hopefully see you Monday, going to be late getting back into town.

I don't get how this guy still fails to recognize that his "niceness" is ultimately killing the coyotes. He acclimates them, they become dangerous, and then people end up having to shoot them.

It's not the coyotes' fault, but, by the same card, once they lose their fear of humans, they are dangerous and you can't have them around. If I hadn't made it back to the house, I don't think I would have survived that encounter. There were six of them, and four were massive (I'm wondering if some of them may have been hybridized- the four large ones had a slightly Shepherd-y look about them).

I wish they'd hold the people who continue to purposefully feed these animals and encourage habituation legally responsible. They're creating a dangerous situation for all involved, and it's bad for both the general public and the coyotes. Somebody is going to get killed.

In other rant-y news: RIP, alternator (2001-2011)... it was great while it lasted. Fabulous timing, too... just before interviews and the week that three of my four cats go in for their yearly... I reeeeally wanted to drop an extra $700 this weekend. How'd you know?

Dispersed. They came here on their own, so no, not introduced.

Thanks 🙂

Cautionary Tail, my fingers are crossed for your cat :xf:

ETA: My pinched nerve is back and worse than ever. I went to the doctor in November and he said that it would go away on it's own and that there was nothing he could do... last night, instead of just tingling, I had stabbing pains on the soles and side of my foot and my back began to ache. It's driving me crazy! I don't want to go back to the doctor and risk looking like a fool 😛 but the tingling and the pain is very distracting... I have four courses and a thesis this semester. I cannot afford to be distracted again.

Rant of the day: So, I've been having minor panic attacks over not getting emails from my potential schools (mainly UPenn) - I only applied to 4 and not hearing anything is driving me a little crazy (my fam might say otherwise, I'm probably getting difficult to live with 😉 ). Then I read that Tufts was mailing their letters and people had received them yesterday. I was uber bummed when I didn't receive anything (we got a lot of bills and I got a $400 amount capitalized on my ever growing loan). Now, today, I'm reading through the feeds and see that someone listed their mailing address as their school address, wouldn't see it till s/he returns, etc. So, I have a  (not smart, just the ah-ha effect) and go to check VMCAS. Lo and behold, I listed my mailing address as my school one :annoyed:(at the time of applying, I automatically listed my school one because I assumed I would be there - foolish me!) I don't go back to school until Jan 30th. :bang::boom:

Anyone feel like smacking me?:slap: I'm doing a pretty good job of it haha 😀

umm you should find a way to get that letter. If it's supposed to be an interview invite you will have to RSVP way before that.

Haha, yeah. I have a friend who's staying up there for Intersession (my school is on break for almost 1.5 months...more profit :d) so hopefully she will check my mail asap. Otherwise, I'm going to head up in the next week!

Heaven forbid someone doesn't pull rank on me at least once daily around here... Yesterday we ran out of wet dog food (yeah - RAN OUT) and I had the audacity to offer to go out and buy a can of something else as I've done in the past when this situation has arisen. Well, I get ripped a new one saying that if I do that the dogs will get raging diarrhea and I better not because well, the director will be notified that I'm the one that caused the GI upset. So, THEY'LL go out 'after work on their time' and get the 'right' stuff. Well, then if you had it all figured out, why come to me?? It's not my fault you people can't place feed orders so that we have enough food to go around. Now, I just found out that they went and bought the same damn food I would have picked up yesterday!!!! 😡😡😡

Then, earlier today, I handled an emergency issue at work only to have this same person (who isn't my supervisor, but thinks they're above me simply because my title comes with the word 'tech' in it), chime in and say that THEY handled the situation as soon as they were notified by lowly little me given that I was 'unable' to take care of it fully.

Um, hello? Just because you made a phone call from another building and actually found a person in the lab doesn't mean that you get to toot your horn to everyone and their brother stating that all was now taken care of AFTER I took care of the important things (the animals and emailed the PI and director exactly what you told the other person in the lab) and then simply had the courtesy to phone you because I know your lazy ass wouldn't leave Face Book long enough to check your email again today. Way to go telling the lab what you read in my email given that you didn't see the issue yourself. Gold star for you!!!

:boom:

To top it all off, I come in this morning to find that someone ravaged my desk and had the nerve to open an unopened box of oatmeal in my desk so they could steal a particular flavor!!! Seriously?? You have enough moxy to open an unopened box when there's an open box in the desk so you can fully deplete me of strawberry!?!?!? :wtf:

I swear if I don't get into school, I'm moving into my car just to get the hell out of here!!!! I am SOOO sick of it all... :bang:

Sorry to hear about people giving you crap 🙁 I know the feeling of someone sitting on Facebook while they tell you to go do their job 😡 I hate sitting around doing nothing, but why can't you go do your own job?? Bummer about the stealing food stuffs. Perhaps you need 24 hr. security at your desk...boohiss to thieves.....:d They should've left you $$ for some new food!

My first roomate and her friend used to come into my room at 2am... high... and raid my minifridge. Then her friend would PEEL MY FINDING NEMO FLEECE BLANKET OFF ME while I was "asleep" and curl up on the floor with it.

One night she peeled it off of me and left the room... so I hid it... it was funny listening to them try to figure out what happened to the blanket... until they started rooting through my closet. They found it... and yeah... I got the heck out of there.

I feel your pain.

Damn....I would have either A) Sat up, smacked the bitch across the face and laid back down or B) Cursed up a storm at them and told them to either find their own damn blanket or to get lost and go somewhere else.

I don't let people do that type of **** to me.

It was like the one time I had this roommate from France. I had a really busy week all week, multiple exams, nights I was up until 3AM (I would go to the study room down the hall to not disturb her) and I worked quite a few days during the week. I finally was at the end of this hell week and was sooo excited to SLEEP IN the next day. Her phone rings at 4AM and she answers it, talks really, really loudly in French and hangs up about a minute later. Ok....no big deal, but then the phone rings AGAIN and she talks on it for over 40 minutes really loudly in French, I asked her to please be quieter, to take the phone conversation out of the room, etc etc but she ignored me, finally I just said shut the F*** up!!!

Then later that morning she had the nerve to tell me that she does not appreciate being cussed at.

My response: I don't appreciate being awakened at 4AM, asking someone politely multiple times to please move the conversation outside and then continuing to be ignored.

Her response: Well, I would have created more noise if I had to go outside....😕...

My response: Ok, but I was ALREADY AWAKE and five minutes of you doing whatever the hell it is you need to do to talk outside is much better than 40+ minutes of listening to you talk at the top of your lungs in French.

GRRR!! 😡

It was so sad being there "in the trenches". The UC Davis residents were coming into the vet office once in a while to grab more fluid bags and wash hands. Every puppy that came in to the vet hospital was sent out to an emergency hospital for overnight care and because there are more than 30 confirmed cases now, Guide Dogs can't handle all of the puppies with their vet staff and facility. Unfortunately, many of the puppies we sent out to other hospitals kept the puppies in their travel carriers because the hospital didn't even have enough cages in their isolation wards. We had a puppy come into the hospital who had an allergic reaction even though the puppy was parvo negative...he's most likely positive now. They seem optomistic, but it's a very sad/scary thing to happen in a large kennel setting.

I'm still about a 40 minute drive from the campus, so I'm not ridiculously close, but I'm able to get out there once a week. I hope you've at least been able to get to CA to see the campus, it's beautiful! Goodluck with your puppy. Although I haven't raised dogs for GDB, I raised three for another service dog organization here in CA called Canine Companions for Independence. I have an idea of what a challenge and pleasure the entire experience is 🙂.

And now my rant: Illinois is effing cold!!!! How do you people survive in the midwest? Here to see my mom's cousin inaugurated as governor of Illinois and I can't go anywhere without freezing my tush off. Brrrrr....:scared:

I had a roommate who would come home from the bars at three in the morning and decide to practice his electric guitar, amp and everything, in the living room. Often his entire "jam band" would join in, which included a bass and drums, (they put a drum set in the living room).

And then he would get pissed at me for yelling at him to shut the hell up in front of his friends.

...And people wonder why I lived alone for most of undergrad, and continue to live alone even though I'm a broke vet student...

My freshman year was horrendous, roommate-wise. They stuck three of us in a room that barely fit two, and because we were among the latest to accept admission, they didn't make an effort to place us with people we had anything in common with. I could rant for hours about the two chicks they stuck me with. 👎thumbdown👎thumbdown👎thumbdown👎!

I will never again have roommates, if I can help it. Frankly, I'd much rather be broke and live somewhere that isn't as nice.

A transgendered person I know had a 16-year old daughter of a Southern Baptist preacher as an assigned roommate. Needless to say, he spent a lot of time outside of his room until a room swap could be made.

Oh god, roommates. Never again. During the summer before senior year of undergrad, I lived in Lexington for an internship, and ended up renting a room in a house with three sorority girls. Me = not a sorority girl. I was also the only one with a job.
I had endless days waking up to find random guys sleeping on the couch in the living room. The house was disgusting because they'd eat and drink, drunk, and leave everything out. Personal favorite moment, one morning I woke up to find one of their friends IN MY BEDROOM. The chick was seriously looking for something to pee in. In my bedroom. No joke. :uhno:

My boss, when I told him I needed to end my internship a week early to get the hell out, was completely understanding. He also told me that I would later have great stories to tell. 🙄

In my second year of undergrad, I had two roomates who would not stick up for themselves and two who were incredibly loud, messy and rude. Whenever the two did something that the three of us didn't like, I was the only one who said something and it was always two against one.

I ended up getting no sleep all year and ended up sick every time a test rolled around.

One chick was HUGE, into drugs and worked two jobs while taking a full course load. What does her being huge have to do with anything? Well, after she flooded our apartment and didn't clean it up, I went to the head of residence and told him EVERYTHING she had done or not done during the year... well... an RA went to speak with her and she THREW A FIT. She stomped around the apartment loudly threw of her decorations, posters in crap in her garbage dump of a room. She sat down at the table with her friend and started swearing. "If I ever find out who f***ing went to an RA on me instead of TELLING ME TO MY FACE, that b**** is going to get what's coming!" That chick would squish me like a bug if she found out it was me. My two friends immediately got on her good side of course. I started sleeping with my door locked, started seeking counseling for the stress and immediately started looking for some place off campus to live.

Head of residence wouldn't kick her out... but then again, she was apparently "buddies" with him.

And another little rant... probably opening a huge can of worms here... but I wish certain people on SDN would get off my back about my issues... especially when other people have similar issues and those people are only coming after me for whatever reason. I don't appreciate being singled out and made to look like a fool, okay? Especially since I don't know those people and haven't done anything to those people!

If I wanted someone to hang off my every word, I'd travel back to junior high where girls used to skip class and follow me around, just to get a rise out of me. If I had really enjoyed it that much, I wouldn't have made the decision to get restraining orders if I ever came across them again.

You do get singled out because you constantly bring up the same issues over and over again, and in each case you're the victim. Sometimes you come across as trying to one up other people as to how bad you have it, and how much of a victim you are. The thing is, people can only feel sympathetic for so long before they start to get annoyed and that's where the problems start.

I don't know you and I'm not trying to be an ass to you. But when you put all your information out there (a general 'you' not necessarily YOU, but you do tend to do this) and are constantly ranting/complaining/etc it gets old real fast.

Take this girl at my graduate school for example. She was new and came in and started sharing personal information with everyone..telling them about problems with her parents, probs with her boyfriend etc and it was really hard on everyone because first of all we felt uncomfortable hearing all of her problems. It's awkward to do that to someone who doesn't know you well. And we all felt bad for her because obviously she had issues that she needed to get off her chest but it's also really draining emotionally to people who have to hear it, especially when it's the same thing over and over and when it's with someone you don't know well. And it got to the point where people would go out of their way to avoid her because we've all got our own problems were dealing with and sometimes we can't deal with other peoples, especially when you're not close to them. Then it becomes a burden.

I know we have a 'rant here' thread. But when it's used constantly to complain about the same thing it can be hard on others. And people lose their patience easily.

You all are making me nervous for when I have to move in with roomies for vet school. :scared:
