Yeah Joe had major issues with Firestone. I really like Stillwater Automotive. They don't pull that salesman crap. But they are really popular and always have a full schedule so we usually end up going to Kwik Kar. They do a good job but always try to get more money out of you.

Toyota has been surprisingly good about that kind of stuff for me. I even told them the last 2 oil changes that I was concerned that I'd need new brake pads and such. And they'd be like, "eh no, you're still fine." I haven't been asked about doing anything extra except for once about tire rotation and once about air filters. And those were asked pretty casually, as if they were expecting me to decline. And this is for a car that is now at >75k miles.
But I guess when they do find something wrong and you use their services, it's freaking $$$.
And double blow... I just sent in my application to renew my green card. That was $450. I couldn't apply to have it waived because my gross income last year was $100 over the limit to qualify for a fee waiver. FML
I feel like money is hemorrhaging out all of my body's orifices. I'm so scared to go to the dentists for a checkup. My cat still needs a dental. le sigh

Thanks. My parents will definitely not pursue hugely life-saving measures, especially at her age. They're being surprising good about it though considering the increase in urination. I really thought my mom would be of the "she pees, she's gone" mentality, but she's actually talking about crating her at night and restricting her in the house. We'll see what the doc says. They all gotta go from something. 🙁

As the owner of a senior dog, I wish her the best. The scary thing for mine is I don't exactly know how old she is, only that its anywhere from 14-18, so I'm kind of hyper-aware of her health. So far so good, but I know it's a scary feeling. Hope it works out!

Got rear ended today which caused me to rear end the person in front of me. Basically I was the meat of the car hamburger. Luckily I drive a tank of a car so minimal damage to it. My shoulder hurts though where I was wearing my seat belt. After the fender bender, I took my cat to the vet. There they discovered that he has a polyp in his ear canal that needs to be removed. FML. Thank God for 3 day weekends.

It's ok car, I have an endless supply of money, go ahead get yourself stuck in park; not like I am trying to figure out how to pay for my vet school applications, or my undergrad loans that have become due. Nope, because I have an endless supply of money on my money tree in my backyard here in the middle of the desert. Maybe we could get a little rain... my money tree needs some green on it.

Some old lady backed into my driver's side door on Wednesday. The door needs to be replaced. Yesterday, my check engine light started flashing on the highway and the car started shaking. I pulled over, turned it off, tried to start it up, and once the engine finally started, the whole car started rattling. I turned it off and ran as far as I could, scared that it would blow up. Had it towed to the Subaru dealership, who told me that cylinder four's head needs to be replaced because there is no pressure in cylinder four. Yep, $3,800 and 10 days to fix. When I get it back, I have to send it to the body shop to get the door replaced. At least I'll have a loaner for that. UGH.

All of these recent posts make me glad that my car cost me only $200. It's not pretty, but it gets me around, and when it has it's final performance and bursts into flames on the side of the road, I'll walk away, smiling.

We have only had 1 lecture in O-chem since the semester started. Last Monday was cancelled due to the hurricane and this coming Monday is Labor Day. It will be 3 weeks inbetween lectures by the time we get back. There have been no emails to inform us of where we should be or how far we should get on our own in the interim. I'm just plugging along by myself here. I know I'm probably over-stressing this, but I can't help but feel we're already severely behind the eight ball.

I tend to think you're overthinking it. I wouldn't expect any undergraduate to try to study ahead of the lecture material, and I don't think your professors do either. I'd imagine the reason behind the lack of emails is just that, they don't expect you to do anything until your next class.

When I was in OChem II in spring semester of 2009, we had a huge ice storm in NW Arkansas.. almost all of the city was out of power for 5-7 days and I was out of my apartment (because it was freezing/no power) for 10 days. During that time half of the class, including the teacher, couldn't receive/send emails because of the weather and people being displaced and not having access to internet, etc. We weren't expected to learn material that hadn't been taught yet, and they adjusted the curriculum accordingly. It may get a little stressful once you go back, trying to catch up some, but for now, don't worry too much.

going to vet school out of state really has it's downsides, although, i'm so grateful i'm in vet school, and i know i have to be here. i miss home so much, and i don't think it helps that it's hard making friends. i met a bunch of people who i think are nice, but it's hard to make real friends. i'm living with 2 other first years who are nice, and we get along well enough, but i feel like that we're so different on important things, that we wouldn't be friends if we weren't living together. lately i've just been feeling alone because the only people i can relax around are people i have to call on the phone to talk to.
i know things'll get better, but it just sucks now.

Give it time, hang in there. You will find someone you click with at some point. Spend time with different folks when you can.
For the record, vet school hasn't been roses and butterflies for me thus far either. Didn't *quite* pass the first phys exam, which stung a bit extra because it was cell phys and I just finished taking advanced cell molec last spring, so c'mon. There are two exams this week, and I'm just dragging my feet a lot. Not sure why. I need that feeling of panic to grip me before I can really sink my teeth into the stuff, but by then it's a bit late. I'm a crammer by nature, but I need to be more efficient for it to work well. Thus far, my methods are too meticulous - not enough time to just review.
So, adjustments. And anatomy lab sucks and it stinks and I don't want to go there when I don't have to...

Right? I don't know why I've created this thing in my head, but I just really, really don't want to be at school when school isn't actually happening. And I'm definitely making learning this material more difficult for myself. Trying to study from pictures/text just is not doing it. I get super confused while trying to visualize. Just gonna have to get over it and make really good friends with my dead pit bull, I guess. :-/

haha i've actually fallen in love with the anatomy lab as a good place to study. it gets me out and about and there are many very desirable traits in the room. Bright lighting, comfy chairs, big tables, giant quiet open room...i find them very appealing. And I've found that after 10-15 mins, I no longer smell the horrible dead/toxic chemicals smell any more. I spent 15 hours there this weekend studying for my upcoming exams this week.
Exams. First one is tomorrow 😱😱😱 Super scared! I think I know most of the material, just have to actually remember it when the test comes around

mine's a pit bull too. does your school have tutors that do small groups for anatomy? i signed up for one here, and went tonight and it was really helpful, i don't feel nearly as clueless

going in with a friend or two and just going through everything you've done is really helpful. my anatomy lab group is a disaster and 3 of us learn nothing because the 4th is bossy, pushy, condescending, and just wants to get through everything. She's already been through this semester before 2 years ago but had to drop out because her loans ran out with the economic crisis. she is driving us crazy!! one of my lab partners and i just end up smiling and agreeing with everything the other two do and just come back on our own time.

I know we can ask for a tutor and they will provide one. From what I understand, though, it's not something where you just sign up and go. Would be sweet if it was. I don't think I'm having trouble with the material as long as the dog is in front of me. Our group is the only group that seems to consistently finish the dissections within the lab period. Of course, then I go home and I can't visualize the origins/insertions from memory, and can't find a picture with a decent angle to help me make sense of it. Really, I just need to stop being a recluse and get my tail in the lab.

haha. being in lab and talking through it really does help. our tutors they send a list and its first come first serve... usually 3-5 people at a time.

wow, makes me appreciate our dept. of edu a lot more now! we have 3-4 open review sessions for anatomy and physiology each week and one for histo! on top of that, 40% of the students are in an academic enrichment program that forces them to go to 1+ special review sessions per week (we joke that these are the 40% the university wants to succeed and the other 60% are just paying tuition because everyone is jealous of the extra review sessions haha)
and TT, I don't know what I'd do with myself if I had to stand for 3 hours in the am when I'm barely asleep with my "disaster" lab group (thats what we've nicknamed it haha)

The stools get used more for sitting dissection kits and lab manuals on. I have yet to use them for me to sit on them.

A few years ago, a very dear friend lost her beloved horse to a nasty torsion colic. He was literally one of those once in a lifetime world's-best horses who was perfect for her.
She was horseless for a bit, and finally jumped back in and bought a new horse 2 years ago. He fractured his sesamoid bone this week (a basilar fracture in the distal sesamoid, LF) and that's got a pretty poor prognosis. They're headed to the specialty clinic this week with the regular vet. Please let this horse recover. Please keep them in your thoughts. She does not deserve to go through this again.
I would go hug my pony but he's still 600 miles away because getting a shipper to bring him here has been hellacious and I want to scream and kick things.

I'm so sorry about your friend's horse. 🙁 That's terrible. I'm getting mine shipped here in two weeks and she's only going 450 mi. It's been a hellish rollercoaster (both pick up and drop off are off of the big routes), so I know what you're going through!

I hate anatomy. I feel so behind everyone else and like I know absolutely nothing. I dread going to lab 3 days a week. There are so many sources to learn from and so much material that we've covered and I am completely lost. I shy away from having anything to do with the dissection because I can't remember 3/4s of the physical structures we're working on and I don't want to look like an idiot (or get scolded by our bossy group member).
We have a test next week and the stack of things we have to know is about 6 ft high. Out of hundreds of body parts, we will have 50 on the lab part (and we did a three week crash course overview so its basically everything) and then we need to know pretty much everything we have and have not covered so far for the written part.
I am so overwhelmed, I don't even know where to start. The biggest issue is time. I feel like I have very little time to learn it all for next week (we have a physio exam thurs) and aside from spending each night in the lab until class the next day (which we aren't allowed to do because security kicks us out sometime between 11p and 1a) I really can't imagine learning enough to pass let alone do well. I've been reviewing the material as we go along, but it pretty much doesn't stick, and at the rate we're moving I dont have time to make sense of it all. ugh.

Not sure if you want advice (this is a rant I realize).... and maybe I am the last person who should give advice, but I found myself feeling similarly about anatomy last year.... bombed the first of our three exams and couldn't recover (I was passable -barely- on the next two).
I felt like you did, couldn't possibly learn all the stuff I didn't know but tried anyway. I ended up knowing very little about many things and that was a really bad plan....
I would emphasize learning the basics REALLY well. If you know that, at least you can answer somethings confidently. A lot of the rest of it can flow from that.
Know the muscles/attachment really well. Know the big picture (major branches) for nerves and blood vessels and make sure you don't get that stuff confused.
A lot of times that will give you enough to answer a fair portion of the questions.
Once you have that down, worry about the details. Anyway, that is the lesson I had to learn. Good luck.

Agreed. I was bad at anatomy, and had a bossy group member as well (I was already thought of as being the low achiever/stupid one of the class since my interests were lots of research and biochemistry type things and I didn't have much clinical experience). I almost failed the second semester also. What pulled me through was drawing. Drawing what we see in lab (even if it's bad) is very helpful. And you will have it all repeated in your classes over the next few years. I didn't really lean muscles and bones well, for example, until we took Musculoskeletal Med/Phys. The application of it helped me learn. And now, anatomy is a huge part of what I do 🙂

Definitely second that. If you have limited time, don't worry about learning the details about those flimsy little muscles that anatomists can't even agree on the function of, or even more so, the itty bitty bumps that you can barely see on the bone they attach to. Just maybe be able to point it out on your specimen.
If there's clinically relevant information written about certain anatomic parts, those are the ones you want to definitely have down. If the anatomic parts have major functions, you prob want those down too. But really, don't sweat the little stuff. Just remember that even those who do really well in anatomy will forget most of the nitty gritty details come next year (if not right after the exam). Not shoving that info into your short term memory for the exam might mean that you might miss a point or two, but it's not the end of the world, and it's definitely not worth your sanity. If it's really important, it'll be emphasized again later anyway.

I freaking hate my body sometimes. Between my hypoglycemia and continually loooow blood pressure I couldn't even make it through my first spay today as surgeon. Had to sit and let the assistant finish. Felt like an utter failure...which is great to start a long night of studying.

Soooo.... apparently I'm going to become an aunt again in less than 7 months. Is it weird that this news was broadcasted on facebook before I'd heard it from either of the parents to be (no phone call, email, etc...)? Or is that just how it is nowadays? The other two aunts to be and I don't really know how to respond.

A) BREATHE. You're not the only one. That's half the battle of vet school is reminding yourself you're not the only one and there are at least a dozen (for sure more..) other students who are as overwhelmed as you.
B) Coming from someone who had a terribly tough first year, I have to tell you, LEAN ON YOUR PEERS. There are those who just "get" anatomy... and while anatomy wasn't my worst subject, I benefited largely from reviewing with those who knew what they were talking about.
C) Once you learn it, go teach it. There are going to be tons of opportunities come one and two days before the test that everyone is going to be in the lab, half of the people will be all reciting all the stuff they know and the other half is just trying to figure it out still and memorize. Work with that half. Together, you can learn very well, teaching each other. Even though they may be frantic (a modern defect of the vet school breed), they still are very intelligent and may know something you don't.
That's what helped me. In the end, you're always going to feel overwhelmed. But it really helped me to talk to some of my other friends and get some perspective that I was just a tiny fish in a big know-nothing pond and it also helps to remember that you really ALL are in this together!.

I suffer from both as well. I get symptomatic when my glucose is 65 and my normal BP is usually about 85/60. You just need to plan for it. I knew I was going to be allowed to scrub in and assist on a gastropexy last week. (super nervous, but vastly excited as well.) Eat well that morning, with good sources of protein and fiber that will stick with you for a while. My breakfast of choice is extra fiber wheat bread with egg whites, a piece of sliced cheese and soy sausage. Choose other sources of proteins throughout the day if needed. Simple carbs won't sustain you and will set you up for your sugar to bottom out in a short time. In addition, make sure you're well hydrated and start the night before. Lots of water, followed by more water the next morning and throughout the day. Give up the morning coffee if you can since it's a diuretic and will make you lose more fluid.
I followed that plan last week and did fine. Even impressed my vet as that's the surgery where people usually fall out on her, lol.

My car has had its check engine light on for about a month now - its been to two different mechanics and neither of them can find out whats wrong. Its going into an auto-electrician on monday so hopefully he can sort it out, but im so sick of spending money and not getting results!!! And im so sick of my piece of **** car, i swear to god in going to buy a new one when its fixed!!!
Another rant:
I've had what I thought were recurrent urinary tract infections for about 6 months now - but the cultures are always negative. Finally get a doc who is proactive and awesome and he's sending me off to a urogynaecologist (which is really expensive and complicated for me to organise due to australias public/private system but thats another story!!!) but the upshot is that im having a cystoscopy and im actually really worried its going to hurt! 🙁 If anything im less worried about pain during the procedure and more worried about pain afterwards - i dont want anything to exacerbate my already uncomfortable urethra!!! I know its a step in the right direction, but have any of you ladies had one done and can pacifiy my fears lol?

I started saving up money to go to Costa Rica for the maymester for an Avan Biology class and I had a few hundred dollars already together, but now my boyfriends car Broke down again (!) and I need to spend it all to help him get a new transmission.. Gotta start over again. 🙁
