Yep, that gets old really really fast. The only answer anyone will usually get from me is "I did fine," and they can take that to mean whatever they want. And at the start of first year, everyone seems to want to be an orthopedic surgeon or zoo vet. But that tapers down as time passes too.

That's good to hear! I wouldn't mind everyone calming down and sitting down. I think I have identified most of our grade terrorists, so I will just try to avoid them until the apathy sets in...

Four hours of lecturing second years this afternoon. FML. Not that I have anything against second years, but I have so much else to do today....hopefully I can at least get them excited. Got some cool lesions to show them. Laminitis, melanosis, a big calcified lipoma, a nasty enteritis....But man, my schedule is so packed already.

Definitely! I'm sure that there are certain professors who give such tests in other fields at pretty much every school, but none seem as consistently depressing as our types did.

ETA: What else is on your plate today, WTF?
 
I'm stressed out with all of this talk about my high student debt after vet school...everyone is telling me this. Even with a six figure salary as a Vet, it'll take such a long time to repay it all, is all i'm hearing from just about everyone...

Absolutely hate my job, but feel absolutely trapped.

I'm working so hard on my pre-vet classes but I swear sometimes I think I'm kidding myself thinking there is any way out of this nightmare job, being that I'm the primary breadwinner in my relationship, and my husband doesn't really seem all that willing to change his frivolous ways.

I feel like a prostitute that can never stop turning trix. FML

I'm sick of working a job I hate to be broke at the end of the day. I'd rather be broke doing something I'm passionate about. Is that so wrong?!?!

Cases were ( we put out lesions we saved from the floor and 2nd year students have to go around, describe them, suggest a cause, etc - then I review the disease process for them). 35 students per class, 4 classes one after the other. Man, my throat is so sore. Appreciate your lecturers, people :laugh: It's harder than it looks, I am learning!

1) Necrotizing and ulcerative enteritis, colitis, and abomasitis in a 1 week old calf - cause, Salmonella

2) Strangulating lipoma in an old Paint horse, leading the colonic infarction and necrosis

3) Pressure-induced esophageal congestion and necrosis due to choke in a Quarter horse

4) Melanosis in the meninges and aorta in a Suffolk ewe

5) Stephanofilaria dermatitis in a cow

6) Severe laminitis with P3 rotation and osteolysis in a Draft-type horse

Fun fun! 😀

Oh wait.....:laugh: I thought you meant what else I had on my plate as in what else I was "serving up" at lab, hah!

Well, I have slides for a seminar on Fri I need to do, need to finish the initial draft for a case report for a conference, and have homework for tha F@^$(@#*$#^@ statistics class I am taking (the residency has a MS sort of "intertwined" so we take classes in addition to clinic duty, rounds etc, plus biopsy duty next week). It sounds ridiculous, but I generally only work about 50 hour weeks- 60 is it's really bad, but rarely. Path is a more "life friendly" specialty, hah!
 
You don't want to tell everyone what ELSE is distracting you?

I'm halfway distracted by those pretty blues myself, and I'm happily married, damnit. :d

My rant - I passed all my first exams, but I didn't do much more than that. Gotta step up my game. And get my butt off SDN every 5 minutes.

And I have to say I'm slightly jealous of your #4 case today. All I had was an infected macaque canine that should have been pulled on site; but my 'boss' said we couldn't because we weren't on the same floor as the xray or the trache tubes. **sigh** Now I have to wait until tomorrow (oh wait, it's after 12pm EST, so I can say today) so I can anesthetize the poor beast two days in a row.
 
Pharmacology - you are possibly the most boring, painful class yet of vet school. Please let your test today not give me tooooo thorough of a whuppin'. Thanks.
 
I know I'm not the best judge of how much I talk about vet school but I try to keep it to when asked. I know once in a while I say something because it's on my mind about this school or that and how my application is going. But to hear my best friend telling my boyfriend that she wishes I'd STFU about Vet school? We spent the afternoon together and the apps never came up once, but what does she vent about to him? Not to mention the venting to him instead of mentioning to me that she doesn't like hearing about it.

I am so stressed out and now I can't talk about it to anyone.

Sorry to hear you are stressed out. I'd be wondering, why is he commiserating with her? What makes her feel comfortable or find it necessary to vent to him in the first place, especially behind your back. Not trying to stir up any drama, but have just been personally burned by "friends" in the past.

Have you talked to her? If not I think a conversation is in order, stat.

Secondly, don't let other people bring you down about your ambitions. If you want to talk about vet school non-stop, a true friend would support you all the way. IMHO.
 
So, today is payday....well, the day we are SUPPOSED to get paid, but for some reason the dumba** in payroll entered the wrong date and nobody in the office got paid today.

Like many people in this crappy economy, I live paycheck to paycheck and with it being the 15th, I need to pay my mortgage today or get dinged with a near $100 late fee. Being the lowest paid person in the office, $100 is a lot of money to me, but nobody seems to give a crap. Toxic work environment anyone??

Am I being reimbursed by the firm for their oversight costing me $100? NO! 😡

I've said it before, but I'll say it again I HATE MY JOB! Let's just add this to the growing list of reasons why it sucks here!!!!!

I'm pretty sure there are regulations for this. I think your employer is obligated to pay you on the correct day. Hm, may want to do some research! Good luck, that really blows.

I'm going to have to agree with this. I would check the TX Dept. of Labor site. Pretty sure that they can't do this.

"Although the law requires an employer to pay wages in a timely manner on regular paydays, the question sometimes arises of what penalties might apply if an employer misses a payday, or a paycheck is not honored due to insufficient funds in an employer's account. The following considerations would apply to such situations
  1. There is no provision in the law assessing a specific penalty for late wage payments.
  2. There is no Texas or federal law specifically requiring an employer to reimburse employees for bank charges caused by deposited paychecks bouncing, or by their accounts being overdrawn due to non-payment of wages. However, if such charges effectively reduce their pay below minimum wage, that would arguably violate the FLSA, and the employer could be required to reimburse enough of the fees to restore the pay to the level of minimum wage.
  3. Practical limit: despite the lack of a specific late wage payment penalty, if late payments, or missed payments, become too numerous and result in enough wage claims to get the attention of TWC, the agency could impose a bonding requirement on the employer, meaning that the employer would have to post a bond in order to continue employing workers in Texas or doing business at all. The Attorney General could also seek an injunction in court to enforce the bonding order.
  4. Habitual late wage payments, or failing to pay wages at all, is likely to make some employees want to quit. Turnover is expensive for everyone concerned, and if such employees file unemployment claims, TWC is likely to consider the wage payment problems to be good cause connected with the work to quit."

I totally agree! Funny thing is they're lawyers, so i'm sure they know this and figure they'll just "loophole" it or whatever shady crap it is that lawyers do.

Texas Payday Law

Under the Texas Payday Law, employers must pay employees not covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act at least once a month. They must pay workers covered by the act at least twice a month. The standard paydays for non-exempt employees are the first and 15th of each month. If employers opt to pay on different days, they must post payday notices of those dates prominently in the workplace. Employers may not deduct any amount from an employee's pay except for IRS deductions, court-ordered deductions, or deductions authorized in writing by the employee. If authorized by the employee, the deductions must serve a "legal purpose," according to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Thanks - Can't say I'm surprised as there seems to be generally a lack of support for employees. We have no say in the rules, (unless you want to go into politics) yet we're the ones forced to abide by them.

They said it "should" be resolved tomorrow, so I'll just have to wait and see.

AND, I did throw a fit, threaten to quit, and tell them they were costing me a late fee on my mortgage after I posted my rant on here. I came back after lunch to find a check in the amount of my late fee on my chair along with an apology. 🙂

I guess I'll give them some credit for a least trying to make it right.

Better knock down anyone on this forum who wants to be a zoo veterinarian, specialize in something obscure, or generally have a goal that is difficult or competitive. Those jobs don't actually exist. Nobody fills them. People who strive for them are obviously just naive and need everyone in the forum to come make fun of them. Over and over again. Anytime someone says anything optimistic.

There is a point that you start being rude, not just realistic.

Everyone here has a goal that's difficult and competitive (unless they're trolling, of course). And, in general we are very optimistic, not to mention supportive. Got a 2.3 GPA? Don't worry about it, you can turn that around! Want to apply next year and haven't set foot in a clinic yet? Just put out some feelers for a shadowing position, something will work out! Have to take a gap year? Well, it's amazing how life experiences can help you develop, be sure to put that on your application!

This, however, is the rant thread. It's the one place on the forum where we get to b**** and moan all we want. A little macro snark won't cause the internet to explode.
 
Sorry to cause a kerfuffle by implying that a vet making six figures is not the most common thing on earth.

I did not mean to imply it's impossible... just rather unlikely for the average vet right outta school. It's a silly expectation to have. Good goal? Yes, of course. But expectation? No.

It's possible if you have been a veterinarian for quite a bit of time, practice in a more affluent area and/or an area not too badly affected by the sh*tty economy, or if you are in certain types of specialties.


I will give you the benefit of the doubt that you didn't mean you would be making 6 figures... 5 years out of school. Amiright??

I got a superlative this last semester from the student organization I work for - "Most likely to drain the world of cheer from their incessant cynicism." It is one thing to be cynical, it is another thing to be realistic, but it is another altogether to be obnoxious and down-putting. I'd prefer that that stay in pre-allo.

Also, Breenie, your post was not at all what I was complaining about. Asking about a person planning on making six figures is totally legitimate - the person responding that they plan to run their own practice actually makes it more obvious that they know what they need to do in vet med to attain higher salaries.

I just don't think making fun of people, or implying they're naive, is necessary. Want to make it realistic? Show them average graduating salaries. If someone still wants to be optimistic and pursue their goal, that's cool. Either life will go their way or it more likely, (especially since there are no unicorns to ride :c) it will not. Snark not really necessary.

There's also a point where you have to pull your head out of your hind parts and face facts that money doesn't grow there, and it actually takes quite awhile, if ever, to make a salary like that. If you're expecting a six figure salary in vet school, switch to med school.

Oh, come on. When the hell have I ever said something to that effect. If you took me that seriously, and consider my pictorial comment obnoxious, rude, and down-putting, you need to grow a thicker skin.

If a pre-vet walked up to you in real life and said "Man, I'm worried about these loans... I'm glad that I plan to own my own clinic, make six figures and should be able to repay it!" would your response be to hold up a picture of rose-tinted glasses, saying nothing else? When they add "Anything's possible!" would you mock them and add to it, "if you are extremely lucky and have tons of things that you have no control over go perfectly right, and have baby Jesus love you to pieces and if you can ride a unicorn"?

Or would you tell them, you know, that that is really uncommon, maybe they should consider what life would be like if they had a more average-paying job? I don't know. I don't think it is really that horrible of a thing to be nice, in real life and online.

And it isn't my skin that needs to be thicker. I'm more in concern for the person with >10 posts who is going to possibly be put off from a community (with really generally wonderful people and a ton of great information) because they were made fun of by several established community members one of the first few times they post. Unreasonable?

It didn't seem serious, but it was kind of dickish.

If the small guys want to bask in the rosy glow for as long as possible, let them alone.

It takes a certain amount of unicorn riding and sparkly bull**** to talk yourself into starting up the vet trip.

No reason to kick the puppies and tell them Santa isn't real. They'll figure it out without you.
