My grandmother passed away early this morning. I cried but I'm a bit lost as how to feel. We haven't had much of a relationship over the last decade so we weren't that close but we had gotten in contact last year. But now I wish I had had more time.

Sorry Abney 🙁. I think that's the worst part about loved ones passing... wishing you would have spent more time with them. I'm sure she loved every minute of the last year you two shared. Hang in there! 😍

Rant of the day: Eff Cell Physiology.

We had an exam today. Since January, we've only talked about proteins, enzymes, and the cell cycle. More than half of the exam was on transcription and translation, things we haven't even talked about this semester.

I'm pretty sure I did okay, since I took Genetics, but I really feel for those who haven't taken it yet, and I'm sure I would have done much better on the exam had I known we were somehow supposed to magically realize that it would be on transcription and translation.

This is the same prof who often keeps us in lecture an extra 10+ minutes, and has kept us over an hour late in lab on at least two occasions this semester. I am FED UP, especially since I don't even need to take this class and I only took it because I was interested.

Plus, it's raining and I have a sink full of dishes to do and I just don't wanna!

Sorry. I'm feeling terribly whiny today. 🙁
 
dyachei I'm sorry to hear that. My mom had a heart attack 3 years ago and it was the scariest moment of my life. And she refused to stay in the hospital, signed waivers to be released early. So I completely understand how you feel.

Thanks guys. I think my biggest concern is my mom and how she is handling this. I just feel some regret that I should have tried harder to bridge the gaps earlier. You always think there will be more time.

sooprnova, I say eff the dishes!!! Curl up with a good book for a bit!!! Rain is perfect weather for a good book and cocoa.

This is so familiar... Why is it that mother's with heart conditions insist upon keeping things quiet? Anyway, go see her - she'll thank you for it. The last time my mom went in (yay CHF!), she swore my step-dad to total silence.. I happened to call two days later and when he wasn't sounding 'quite right' I asked him what was wrong at which point he fessed up. After all, he didn't call to tell me, I asked. 😉 I proceeded to visit and she was very happy to have someone there. So regardless of what your mom is saying, get in touch with your siblings and go see her if you're able - believe me, you'll all feel better - especially considering they're probably going to run more than a few tests that she'll want somebody around for. Will keep good thoughts for her that it's nothing overly serious and that she's able to go without surgical intervention!!

I'm sorry about your grandma Abney. I felt something similar when one of my grandma's died. We were never very close because she just didn't really like little kids, so I never bonded with her when I was younger. Then when I was an adult I realized that she was actually a pretty cool person and I wish I had gotten to know her more.

Dyachei- My parents do the same thing. I woke up to EMTs carrying my dad out of the house on a stretcher one night and no one had bothered to tell me he was even sick. He is fine now, and keeps me more in the loop than I honestly want to be now lol. "No dad I don't need to hear about bowel movements".

My rant- There is a really cute Pyrenees days away from giving birth and my poopy boyfriend won't let me foster her. I wanna see babies darnit!

Haha yeah, I woke up in my Dad's best friend's place and the only person there was said friends Chinese grandmother, who spoke no English and was miming kidney pain at me. Dad and friend had driven to the ER several hours prior and not even woken me up. Not that dad goes to the ER when he needs to, the man had a 9mm kidney stone for three weeks before he went in.
 
I was really looking forward to my day off tomorrow, but I just got asked to work 9-6 and I said yes. Why? Why didn't I just say no. Too bad I need the money. UGH. Kicking myself.
 
I am helpful to a fault. I don't do it to be first or butt in front of a co-worker, I just want to tell people what it is they wanted to know.

I've been doing it a lot lately and my co-worker thinks it's some power game in which I need to be first at everything.

UGH I am sick of power dynamics and I hate having to restrain my responses so that I don't look like I'm trying to be superior all the time. Either I'm lazy and not doing my part of the work if I keep my mouth shut a second too long, or I'm the pain in the ass know it all if I open it too quickly in fear of being thought lazy.

WHY did I have to be wait-listed? I want an excuse to be done here but as I need the money and benefits....

Yo I do the same thing (and have thus been accused of the same power thing), and honestly I actually have kind of had to work on reigning it in a bit to let more inhibited people have a chance to talk.

Then I get a chance to work on my listening skills, which are kind of bad. 😳
 
I JUST CAN'T DECIDE WHICH AMAZING SCRATCHING POST TO GET FOR MY CATS.

(but for a real rant I have an anatomy exam tomorrow. whatever. kitties need new things to destroy.)
 
I made homemade bread and butter pickles with peppers and onions. They look soooooo good.


The rant? I didn't bother reading the recipe all the way through, got all excited about having pickles ASAP, and then realied they have to cure for 6-8 weeks after being canned 🙁 Now I have no pickles until after finals week. And nothing else sounds appetizing for snacking even though I just went grocery shopping yesterday.

Does this count as a first world problem?

Just an update - my mom is doing fine in the hospital. Her troponin levels were mildly elevated so they are keeping her overnight. But she's in good spirits and if nothing happens she will be discharged tomorrow morning. My dad is out of town so I am taking the day off work to drive her home and such.

She made me go to bowling tonight after spending most of the afternoon in the hospital with her, which is why I've been AWOL since this morning. I also shot my new high score in bowling (233) as a result - and that made her happy

I'm glad to hear your mom is doing better. And I am super jealous of your bowling score. My husband is in a bowling tournament on Saturday and he told me today that I may have to bowl because one of his teammates probably can't make it. I average like 105 or something pathetic like that. :scared:

Been walking that line for the last year or so at my job.

I'm honestly excited and motivated to do the work, which irritates my coworkers to no end.

It's either construed as ass-kissing, case-stealing or trying to make other people look bad.

Luckily, the better they get to know me, the less insidious I seem. Hopefully that'll be the same for you guys... Or you'll get out and move on to bigger and better things.

Unfortunately, it is not better today, but is about the same as yesterday. At least it is not worse. NSAIDs don't seem to be helping. I'm starting to wonder if it's the sudden change in weather. It was 86 degrees here today..in Michigan! Also, my family has a history of gout, so I will try to go to the Dr ASAP. If it gets really bad, I can go to the ER and tricare will cover it.
 
Just got home from taking my cat into work for an ER visit after I realized she had a fever (turned out to be 104.3), her 3rd eyelids were up, and then the clincher was her vomiting clear fluid with pinkish bloody spots. She has slightly cloudy abdominal x-rays, so that needs to be re-checked in a week to see if she has an obstructive pattern (she has a tense abdomen and is known to eat the tails off of her toy mice). Treating her for fever and non-specific gastritis at the moment, but am concerned because her blood work showed very low platelets (16K/uL!!! should be 150K/uL at the low end of normal!!!). Ruled out FIV and FeLeuk. Looked up immune mediated diseases but none fit. At least the platelets were aggregating normally on the blood smear.

Anyway, I am concerned. When other people's pets are sick, I am calm and collected and I know what to do. When my cat is sick, I turn into "Anxiety Cat" and start shallow breathing and silently panicking.

I really hope that her platelets are normal the next time I check her blood work. 🙁 🙁 🙁

I've been thinking about my bf leaving for Mexico soon and it's making me really upset. I'm trying to think about other stuff and do homework, study, etc. but instead am talking myself more and more into getting more upset. I just can't think of anything else right now. 🙁

My local community college is not offering any classes for the summer term due to budget cuts. Damn you California.

The other CC's nearby are now expecting even more impacted classes...which was already a crap ordeal cause of the 5% cut to classes....

our family cat at a ton of tinsel off of the tree one year, wrapped around its entire bowl and our vet performed AMAZING surgery and that cat ended up living to the ripe old age of 15 years, point of the story: your vet will do fantastically with your kitty and she'll be out and back to bouncing around before you know it 🙂 Maybe it will even be a solid chunk of gold in her and you'll be rolling in it after 😉 I kid, but I'm sending you and your kitty good vibes!

Bleh!! Good vibes your way- I'm sure your kitty will do great in sx and will enjoy the drugs!!!

I just recently got this obsession with amigurumi (crochet-ing of cute animaly things) and on one blog this lady had these "adorable cat toys filled with catnip of course!" and I wanted to post on her wall to PLEASE DO NOT give YARN toys to cats, or at least supervise. But I decided not to due to various reasons.... but *homemade* yarn toys for cats.... *shudder*

if I had known that all vets are unethical, immoral, con artist, heartless b*astards.... I soo would have tried much harder to get in the first time.

So I am really upset with my boss at the moment. She is usually really cool and easy to get along with, but today she was just not making any sense with what she was doing.

I called in sick to work on Tuesday letting her know I had been up since about 2AM coughing so hard I was making myself sick to my stomach. Then the vomiting would start the coughing over, etc, etc. I told her that I was just really exhausted at that point but that if she needed me to come in later I would. I then proceeded to call her at around 3PM Tuesday afternoon to see if they needed me to come in. She told me not to worry about it. I am on my lunch today when she comes up to me with the schedule and asks if I want to use my sick time to cover up for missing work on Tuesday and I tell her yes. She then asks if I would like to come in for a few hours tomorrow, my scheduled day off, to make up some of the hours. Ok, I have been with this company for 7 years and this is my SECOND time calling in sick in 7 years. I have plenty of sick time to cover for all of the hours on Tuesday. I tell her no; I would just like to use my sick time. She keeps trying to get me to come in tomorrow. I ask her if we are short-staffed tomorrow and she says no. Ok, do we have a really busy schedule? No, it is slow. Ok...why do I need to come in tomorrow? It makes NO sense. She states well we can always use help in reception answering phones...😡 DO YOU NOT HEAR MY COUGH AND HORRIBLE VOICE!!! You want me to ANSWER PHONES!!!??? I as politely as possible tell her that I offered to come in on Tuesday so that they would not have to use as much of my sick time, but since they are overstaffed tomorrow, with a slow schedule I would really prefer to not come in.

Now, I could understand if she had someone else come in on Tuesday to cover my shift if she wanted me to cover their shift tomorrow, but nobody came in to cover my shift so it is not like another employee is getting massive amounts of overtime because I called out sick.

I have been with you guys for SEVEN years, I have gotten very FEW raises in my pay, and I want to use my sick time for the SECOND time EVER and you are going to BITCH A FIT!!!

I can not wait to QUIT!!! Three more months...😡

Work is changing insurance companies soon-ish. I need to get Rabies vaccines soon-ish...wanna do it before school. Found out my current insurance will cover the vax and they'll just cost me $30 per shot ($90 total)!!!! 😀 Obviously, I would like to jump on that shiz ASAP. But...my dr's office is just STUPID and can't seem to understand anything, so I have a feeling it's going to take a while. I hope I'm still on the same insurance when they get their **** sorted out.

Call Dr's office and leave a message telling them I need them to get me the vax because I'm going to vet school in the fall. Lady calls back and asks why I need the rabies vaccine- I repeat that I need it for vet school in the fall.
"Are you sure it's not Tetanus?"
"Yes. I need RABIES vaccines."
"Okay...I will give the doctor your chart..."

A few hours later, another lady calls back and leaves a message on my cell.

"Hi, Dr. wants to know why you want the Rabies vaccine. There's no reason to get it, unless it's for school. You would only need it if you were going to veterinary school or something. There hasn't been a case of Rabies since the 1950's."

ARE. YOU. F*CKING. KIDDING. ME?!?!?!?!??! 😡
