I've spent the majority of my day at the hospital. My grandma was admitted last night, had a MRI and (pending the biopsy, which I'm sure will only further confirm) and has been diagnosed with a glial blastoma in her brain. It's the size of a tennis ball. I don't even know how to comprehend this right now 🙁 She's a huge part of my life, I grew up with my grandparents 20 minutes away, they live 45 minutes from me now. I just feel at a complete and utter loss. She's been my biggest fan and biggest supporter throughout my process of getting to vet school. She's the light of our family and I just don't know what I would do without her 🙁

No! My vets are amazing!!!! They are so supportive and encouraging! The vet that owns the practice even came with me on my first interview this year so I wouldn't have to do it alone. The good ones are out there!

So sorry to hear this Katie. For right now, just be there for her and try and breathe until you know for sure what's going on. I'll keep her and your family in my thoughts 🙁

I feel you. I am currently working as a kennel assistant but get to do a lot of "vet assistant" work like running tests and getting temps etc.. It's only been 2 weeks and I don't know if what I'm going through at work is normal.

As kennel assistant, I feel like I am always busy. I do everything from assisting the techs and doctors to cleaning and taking out the dogs. We are the first to get there and the last to leave. I go in every work day ready to give my 100%, but every day me and the other assistants get scolded. Apparently, if the doctors even see us "standing around not doing anything" for even a second, they begin complaining about us. It is very rare that I am not doing anything during my shift. I'm just getting frustrated that I am getting sh** on for giving to 110% at work. I expected more professionalism in the hospital and boy was i wrong 👎

I volunteered at a clinic that had a doctor that acted that way. I got bitched out for observing or daring to chat for a minute - eventually just scheduled my shifts when one of the other doctors worked, but obviously you can't do that as a worker. Talk to your supervisor if you can and ask what you can do to improve - it's totally possible you'll just be told that the vet can be temperamental and not to take it personally.

if you need to talk about it, I have been in this exact situation. It is no fun and hard to wrap your head around.

So sorry your family is going through this.
 
thank you everyone for all your kind words, it means a lot. It's just incredibly overwhelming at the moment. I think the hardest part is knowing our lives have changed in such a short span of time; my grandparents life together has changed. They just got back from a cruise two weeks ago. They love doing things like that together. And I can't imagine my grandpa alone 🙁

sigh, another day at the hospital tomorrow. thank you again guys, I really do appreciate all the good thoughts. Sleeping on it and taking it one day at a time.

I'd be a lot more sympathetic if you hadn't titled your post "females." Bad work environments don't discriminate... so you shouldn't either.

I hope everything is going ok for you this morning Katie.

My rant:
Wisdom teeth out 2 weeks ago. I developed rock hard bumps on my lower jaw, doc said not to worry they should go away. Over the last week they have pretty much dissappeared.
I woke up this morning with the right side of my face swollen like I just had my damn teeth out and the lump is HUGE now, like the size of a large marble and hard as a rock. I had so many things go wrong with this surgery and I am just beyond frustrated that it keeps haunting me 😡
I still can't open my jaw enough to eat everything and I'm just aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 😡😡😡😡

I get back service as soon as I land in the US and what do I see? I got a voice mail from the vet school about the job I applied to - ten days ago! It's probably the job that one girl I ranted about got. I'm so upset. This was exactly what I wanted and now I didn't get it because I can't use my phone internationally. ):

This is why I set up google voice to record/transcribe my voicemails while I was in Finland - would have missed quite a bit random correspondence. Sucks though. 👎

I just can't understand. I remember reading that article.
On another note, we had a vet accidentally light a cat on fire once... he was dismissed immediately. Mostly because he walked away and didn't care. That was definitely in my personal statement. 😉
But just straight up animal cruelty pisses me the **** off!!! What the hell goes through people's minds? No wonder they turn into serial killers.
We had a dog come in once that was thrown out of a four story window into the parking lot. HOLD ME BACK!!!!!

That's the main deterrent for me when it comes to veterinary medicine. I know that you're helping the animal, even if you have to put it down, but how do you all handle it?

Abuse cases make me so angry. People can be terrible.

regarding the females title, maybe i should have titled it to say something like...i dunno...99% female working environment = everyone on their period at the same time...?

i'm a female myself...but 9 months of the passive aggressiveness is a little long. i dunno. maybe if i was higher up on the totem pole, it would not have been so bad.

and no, it's never been like this anywhere for me, except at that job. pretty disgusted. i'm far from the toxic one. actually got a lot of emails from coworkers saying they were so sorry at how i was treated, and to not give up. then of course the main ring leader of the **** disturbers has now begun harassing me online, and attempting to hack my Facebook. sigh.

I'm sorry you had such a bad work environment, and it does sound really toxic, but no. It's not about being female. Bad co-workers come in every gender, and it's not okay for you to put down women - regardless of your gender.

I know this is really unprofessional, but you should buy bottles of Midol and leave them on the lunch table/area as an anonymous gift. X)

LOLOLOLOL omg i need a sarcastic font i guess. and is this not the rant thread? can i not say pretty much what i want in regards to ranting? btw, the girls as work talk about the 2 (male) dr.'s and say they are little diva's, and that they want to strangulate them when they are on their "man period." is that acceptable?

yes, i actually was responsible for refilling all the pads and tampons at work. 😉 LOL.

sigh. i give up. i dunno. it's just snobby attitudes that really drove me wild there. and it seems that they were always trying to emphasize that they were practicing nursing. (the vet techs i mean. the vets--they were awesome.) maybe thats why i was attacked so much, cause i come from the human health field? i dunno. regardless, never been treated like that anywhere i've worked, not even starbucks or when i've waitressed.
 
I've skipped signing up for the last two WW games because I know nothing about Game of Thrones or (gasp!) Harry Potter. This makes me sad. 🙁

Doesn't stop me from playing! Though I do know enough about Harry Potter to get through. Just haven't read any of the books/seen the movies in years.
 
I called back and left a voice mail. It seems the other girl only works weekends. Maybe I can work something out. And if not, then he knows I'm still interested in case another spot opens for a job. :/
 
I found out my undergrad doesn't offer an Animal Nutrition class, which is a requirement fo my in-state vet school(I'm a NC resident).

At least I know that now so I can arrange something with them over a summer before I apply. It's just irritating that it isn't a given class.

So, how are you guys?

I think NC State has a correspondence course or something. If not, Oklahoma state has one that I'm taking now. You have a year to complete it. Pretty sure Purdue has one also. There are many ways to fulfill that requirement.
