I am so fricken mad and upset right now I don't even know what to do with myself. So Dr. B (she and her partner breed bengals, who I've ranted about many a time) brought a 3 day old bengal kitten in today for my mentor vet (Dr. C) to take care of. Non specific why it wasn't doing well, but apparently when Dr. B was trying to feed it milk was coming out its nose like it was aspirating. She assumed the hole in the nipple was way too big and that was the problem (mind you she did nothing to rectify that). So she tells me the kitten needs to eat and Dr. C isn't going to be back for a few hours, so I go ahead to feed it. I put two drops of milk in it's mouth and it immediately starts coming out it's nose. Now I know it isn't aspirating, so hm, I wonder if it freaking has a palate. Um NO! No freaking palate.

So I call Dr. B and tell her and she says oh, I looked at it but I guess I missed it. Are you Fing kidding me? So she comes in and looks and makes some bs excuse about how it's dark where they keep the kittens and she didn't have her glasses. I was so so mad. Like yes, this isn't exactly her fault, it's a defect. But what is her fault is her complete disregard for the health of the cats she breeds and the kittens she ends up with. She asked me if I wanted her to euthanize him and I was like, no I'll do it, because she'll forget/make an excuse not to take care of it right then and he'll sit on the counter for hours getting cold. It wasn't even an easily justifiable putting it out of it's misery sort of thing. It just freaking sucked. So so bad.

I think the worst part is that she's actually a really good vet. Well, I should say she was before she started going senile. Just when it comes to her own animals I just want to die.
 
So today at the gym we were going for our max weight in power cleans. I start off fine and manage to get up to 100 lbs (which upsets me cause I did 125 at the age of 15...) but I couldn't push myself further than that. The weight wasn't too heavy, but I had this sharp pain in my shoulders, which isn't supposed to happen cause it's mainly a leg exercise...well all the power comes from there and I've been told my form is great. Now last week my left shoulder was a little sore after doing my push press max and I'm worried that I might have possibly torn my rotator cuff. It definitely didn't hurt this much last week, or even this consistently, so I'm going to be super bummed if that's what happened. My right one was even hurting a bit today, so I'm really hoping I didn't screw that one up now too.

And it kind of sucks because I'm really good about not doing too heavy of weights and always try to keep my form to avoid injuries. Probably a result of 14 years of competitive swimming, weight lifting in high school, field hockey and now CrossFit. Will probably be making a doctor's appointment to get it looked out. I just really want to be able to participate in this year's Hero Week starting August 6th because in addition to honoring fallen soldiers and police officers, we're honoring all their K9 companions that fight along side them, so I feel like I have to partake more than ever.

Sorry to hear that 🙁 I hope that's not what it is. I hurt mine a few months before bow season last year and I was so pissed. Especially since I had just paid 700 bucks for a new bow 🙄 It is still not completely healed, but I am stubborn and never went to the doctor 😳. I don't think it helps that I still used my bow every weekend 🙄 I hope it's just a little sore and nothing serious for you :xf:

Thanks...and of course I'm doing the worst thing possible and consulting Dr. Wikipedia to learn more and if what it says is true, there were definitely subtler signs that have been going on for probably a couple weeks that I didn't really pay attention to...🙁

Keeping my fingers crossed that you just strained it or something and that it's not torn. PT does wonders for rotator cuff injuries (I know!). :xf:

I think I pushed my back a little too far yesterday. I spent a few hours, bending over to tie trees to stakes. It was hard for my lower back, but then the pain started moving up to my chest and did not go away for several hours. I went to bed and woke up with a weird feeling in my lower back. I am getting very tired with this field work I did not know I needed to do. I am afraid to ask for a breather:

1. Nobody else appears to be this tired and in pain. Maybe I am a wimp.
2. Since the PI put a pause on the DNA extractions, there is nothing to do inside.
3. My PI is all about efficiency. Perhaps the winery tour on Friday (which was greatly appreciated after 4.5 days in the field) and the fact that I am going on vacation next week is "enough" of a break according to him.

On the bright side, we might be prepping to do some extractions. My PI wants ME and another student to collect the tissue on Friday. But he knows I am going away for a week.

Also, the bending-over is almost done. They are spraying the field next to ours today with some nasty pesticide. If the wind is blowing the wrong direction, we will not be allowed in the nursery for 7 days. So our plan is to rock pick in the giant field.

I thought about it. I wish I had been stuck in fast food for the summer. All of this field work is equivalent to sticking me in fast food restaurant and having me only sweep for the entire 8 hour shift.

Also, a set of really expensive German grafting knives were left out in our field and got ruined. Our manager took them from her old boss without asking because she knew he would not mind. T watched the PI grab the two knives and say "I am going to take these up to the field today!". T thought nothing of it. Until T was lying down in the grass the other day and discovered he was lying on one. They were rusted and one was bent up from being run over by the lawn mower. The person we borrowed them from was very unhappy. When our PI was approached, he blamed us, the students, for leaving them in the field. T was the only person who saw those knives. None of us used them.

😡

So now I am a crazy skank who wears underwear in the field, steals forks and water, and leaves other people's expensive crap out in the field to be ruined. Whatever professionalism I tried to exhibit since I arrived here is now shot to pieces.
 
There's a very aggressive rottie coming in this morning for sedation and physical/radiographs. It came in last night but it was too late to be able to sedate. The owners didn't want to muzzle the dog yesterday and I knew immediately that it was going to be a bad situation - I was right because the dog big the owner. I was tempted to say "I told you so" but I resisted. Thankfully, the owner's ok, just a scratch. This dog is seriously a combination of mean and a wimp. I guess she learned it from her owners though since one of them was crying because we put a muzzle on the dog...which we do EVERY TIME. Fairly certain that it's a torn cruciate from posturing only, and this dog made it sound like we were killing it when we tried to lay her on her side. Puh-leeze. Anyway, I'm hoping someone else will get her this morning, not sure I can handle the drama of the dog AND the owner this morning

Unfortunately I'm an even bigger sucker for Starbucks - I used to live across the street from one, and it was BAD. Here, there aren't nearly as many, and I have to drive out of my way to get to one, so I resort to Dunkin - but I LOVE Starbucks. And I know exactly where there is one in Stillwater.... :meanie:

Ugh those are the worst. We had a 9 month old doberman in one time that literally lunged at you with his teeth baring and snarling. The owner just kept saying "good boy Boston, good boy" and then asked why his puppy is so aggressive :eyebrow:

We had a rottie at work. At least I think it was one. Very sweet, but very sick. But I wasn't sure what breed it was exactly because it was so overweight that it looked more like a mix between a rottie and a meishan pig. I think his weight was also why he didn't make it. 🙁
 
There are 5 people in my biochem class. Why can all 5 people not manage to take the exam on exam day? I want to get my test back. :meanie:

DNA extractions are a go.
Field has been sprayed, so someone found stuff for us to do inside.
Might be spending a week at a vineyard for work come August. 5 minutes from the beach. Accommodations paid for.

He told me yesterday that now that he thinks about it he really likes that I have Ivy. That way I have someone to take care oh when he's gone. 🙁 He's trying really hard now to be good with her because he knows I like that. Gave her a bath this morning. 😳

This reminds me of Magnum. He was a 125lb aggressive rot that had a CCL repair where I work. It actually makes me smile because the next day for care and release the Dr wasn't going to be there. It was just me. I had been doing well from my fear of dogs but this was different. But I handled it like a champ. Didn't even phase me. 😀 But yeah similar situation. The Os were like oh he's just talking. Right. Sure.
 
minor rant but OMG when did the dispatch microwave become everyone's microwave. Seriously, there is a MW closer to your office than ours and this new chick comes in here every day at the exact time I go to make my lunch. And I make my lunch at a different time every day. I swear she's psychic.

And then there I am with my food out, puttin' it in a microwave safe bowl and she zooms to the microwave to use it and then goes "oh. it's just a couple minutes" But if god forbid I leave my food in there for 10 seconds (IF I beat her to the MW) she removes it or comes into my secure area, which I can't leave which is why it's been 10 extra seconds, and starts tut-tutting at me.

AAAGH god I want to quit today.
 
Am I even related to my family?

Took my puppy to a family reunion this weekend at the grandma's beach house. My mom and sister made an effort to say hi to her because they know how much she means to me. No one else even touched her. My grandma literally ran the other direction because she was so scared. My puppy doesn't bark. Doesn't jump. Doesn't bite. Doesn't nip. I just don't get it....

And then my dad & aunt start in on me about how I'm not feeding or training my dog. A. Novice dog owner here. She's getting 1000x better on the leash with no distractions, somewhat better with some distractions, and her brain was fried by so many people. I wish I had a magic behavior button, but seriously, I'M TRYING. B. The only reason my dog looks skinny is because everyone else's dogs are morbidly obese. She's probably a 4.5/10, but I like her on the light side because her conformation is atrocious and I don't want to overload her joints.

My parents tell me I'm starving my dogs. The bostons get a decent amount of food and they are a 4/10 and 6/10. The 4/10 gets 1 and 1/2 cups a day, which is a lot of food for a small dog. She's super active though and is pure muscle. My chi is probably a 4.5. But I totally understand about the world having obese dogs. My parents hated driving around with me when I'd see fat dogs and I was all "That dog needs to eat less." It would actually save people on food and meds. Anyway she's a puppy. She's not going to be perfect, but I'm sure you are both trying.
 
The cat shelter I volunteer at is facing the "normal weight looks skinny" issue right now. We generally pull the morning dry food before giving the afternoon wet food. Last week they started telling us to stop pulling the dry food because the cats are getting "underweight" I asked if our vet had made that decision, only to find out it was a consensus of the lead volunteers, many of whom own 15 lb cats that they say are "solid muscle" :laugh:

Yeah, some of the mother cats that come in are a little under and could use the food, but the males tend towards slightly overweight or more and we have "Bertha" on a diet with notes on her cage that say "don't give me extra food" and I see volunteers giving her a second portion of wet food. NO WONDER SHE HASN'T LOST WEIGHT
 
It just makes me mad because the animals don't have a choice in the matter really. We make the food appealing to them and easy to get. So of course they're going to want to eat it, without thinking about how much they are eating. It's up to us to make sure they don't get too fat.
 
So...about an hour ago an ex-friend showed up at my front door, **** faced drunk.
This girl and I had been friends for a long time, but last year had an epic falling out. We're part of a pretty tight group and the last year has been hard for everyone, especially our friends who feel in the middle. I have really tried to not ask anyone to take sides, or openly talk smack about this girl in their presence. She, however, has taken the opposite approach. Did I mention that this girl is an obnoxious drunk, possibly an alcoholic? For real, she has had to be physically escorted from numerous parties/bars due to her behavior. For example, at my graduation party she threatened a pregnant friend of mine, saying she wanted to punch her in the face. Needless to say, the pregnant woman was not antagonizing her, or in any way provoking her.

Anyways....tonight a mutual friend is in town, and she and my ex-friend are both drunk in my neighborhood (I live in a bar/restaurant heavy area). They decide to walk over here. I'm shocked when I answer the door-I haven't seen my ex-friend in almost a year. But I invite them in and offer them beers. My ex-friend is in fine form-standing outside my front door talking smack about me to my husband, peed in my driveway while smoking a cigarette (!!!), and despite my hospitality proceeds to tell me how mad she was when she found out that our mutual friend is going to have lunch with me tomorrow. WTF! Seriously?! Then, no kidding, she sits down on the couch across from me and says"everyone thinks we should talk this out". I kept my cool and just said that while I did have things that I wanted to say to her, now wasn't the time. Then she forced a hug on me. I hate hugging, btw, and she knows it. Oh yeah, and she kept calling my dog Jackson the wrong name, using the name of our dog that died of cancer 2 years ago. She knows how destroyed my husband and I were over losing that dog AND she knows that we have a "new" dog, has met him multiple times. ARRG! Sorry for the long post, but I'm just so p*ssed.
Way to ruin my happy glow over my first dental today (see RAVES).

OMG! So I meant to tell you all this and completely forgot due to my alcohol consumption at the time 😀....

Last weekend myself and my BF and all of his cousins were hanging out at a bar saying goodbye to me. Someone was asking me about vet school and this random guy across the bar says....

"You mean vet tech school right?"
Me: "No, I mean veterinary school"
Him: "Yeah, um sweetheart, you know veterinary school is a 4 year school right?"
Me: "Um, sweetheart, yeah I do. Which is why I'll be spending 4 years... in vet school"
Him: "Yeah sure, then what school are you going to?"
Me: "University of Florida"
Him: *hits his buddy on the arm and laughs* "Ha! They don't even HAVE a veterinary school"
Me: :eyebrow:
Him: "Listen, hun, I spent a long time trying to get into veterinary school and it's pretty impossible so you don't have to try and show off by lying to all of your friends"
Me: "You're a fecking *****. They were smart to reject you. I have no desire to explain myself to you. Enjoy your life in cut-off t-shirts and craphole bars."🙄

Continuation of my rant from the other day: my arms/shoulders actually hurt wiping off examination tables. Really??? Definitely calling the doctor tomorrow.

I was annoyed at his condescending tone, but other than that, HE was clearly the idiot and I truly had no desire to "prove myself" to him. So I let him think whatever he wanted.
At the time I was all "I can't wait to get home and tell SDN" but when I got home I was all 😴😴😴

Ok this isn't a rant but it reminded me that I wanted to tell you guys a story

I was in an exam room with my Dr. and she was kneeling on the floor examining the dog and when she shifted positions she farted! I almost died. And the funniest part was when the O looked at her dog and was like "Trevor!" and looks at us all apologetic and was like "I'm so sorry, he's a gassy boy". It took everything in me not to bust out laughing.

And the funniest part was when the O looked at her dog and was like "Trevor!" and looks at us all apologetic and was like "I'm so sorry, he's a gassy boy". It took everything in me not to bust out laughing.

Just got to work, completely soaked. It wasn't raining when I left! Isn't it AWESOME to bike to work and not have a car?

I am really sincerely glad the hospital I'm at has spare scrub pants and a dryer to throw my jeans in. This...this was awful.

Him: *hits his buddy on the arm and laughs* "Ha! They don't even HAVE a veterinary school"
Me: :eyebrow:
Him: "Listen, hun, I spent a long time trying to get into veterinary school and it's pretty impossible so you don't have to try and show off by lying to all of your friends"
Me: "You're a fecking *****. They were smart to reject you. I have no desire to explain myself to you. Enjoy your life in cut-off t-shirts and craphole bars."🙄

The bf is leaving this weekend but still doesn't know what day. It would help me a lot to know what day but instead I sit here knowing nothing. It really annoys me. Also the fighting is really upsetting. It just won't stop. All I want is some happy last days, but he is grumpy when he's here and then later today he's leaving to do some last minute work and I probably only get about half a day with him before he leaves. The only time he's really happy when he's talking about leaving. 🙁
 
So a bit after the ex and I broke up I (stupidly) told him I'd hate to not be friends and wanted to stay in touch and blah blah blah. This was before I realized I was REALLY mad at him for stringing me along for months, letting me spend a lot of money to go to Ireland to see him, and then even though he had been planning on breaking up with me forever, doing it the night before my orgo final and two nights before the rest of my exams.

Now, more than 2 months since we broke up and more than a month since he got home from Ireland he decides to text me saying he wants to catch up and that he's sorry for being a stranger since he got home. I really didn't know what to say but ended up telling him I wasn't sure because I was pretty hurt by the way things went down and whatnot. He writes back this big long thing explaining his reasoning for breaking up a bit better than he did originally (and his reasoning is sound, just not his timing). But I don't know, I just feel so s***ty about it. I hadn't really been thinking about him, I was doing fine without having anything to do with him. But now I'm just upset about it all over again. And now I miss him and that really sucks. With most other things in my life crapping on me at the moment too, it's just kind of crappy timing.
