RANT HERE thread

I really need to get this off my chest.

I used to frequent the Clackamas mall in Portland, OR where the shooting occurred the other day. After hearing the news about the elementary school today, I cracked.

I grew up in a very liberal, anti-gun community but live in a die-hard republican community with lots of people who hunt. I've heard passionate arguments from both sides, but none have ever made sense to me:

Please, for the love of all that is good in this world, tell me how increasing or decreasing the number of guns in circulation is going to stop a mentally ill person from slaughtering innocent people? Why are there so many individuals who turn to violence? Why are people depressed/suicidal/angry? Why aren't we taking better care of people with schizophrenia? AGHHH!

Mental illness is a very personal issue for me, since I have an older sibling who is severely affected...it's hard to find (and pay for) adequate treatment for him.

Oh, and SERIOUSLY: for the people that are arguing for less gun control, how the frick is that going to protect elementary school children?!???

/rant. Sorry, I know this issue is all over the place right now 😡

Finals next week...
We just got an email that we won't be allowed into the building all day Saturday. :annoyed:
Really? :eyebrow:
😡

Sounds like us. Who hosts an event in the anatomy lab the Saturday before the practical... not good planning.

Our school had a party in the junior surgery area. Sterile much?

Not to mention, earlier in the year, we had cadaver labs in that room.

That's at least 3 different kinds of unsanitary! 😛

We have wetlabs and such in ours occasionally... one weekend before a practical we had the ACZM boards going on and they used it for something for an afternoon. People were less than thrilled.

Oh that makes sense. I was thinking some kind of alumni cocktail thing.
Still sucks if you want to study though.

@$&%#%^& you headaches! GO AWAY! I was suppose to get a nice 8 hours of sleep between jobs and you are ruining everything!

Man, the whole shooting of little kindergarteners really bugged me all night. I can (sort of) understand gang violence, or occupational violence, or even school shootings by kids marginalized by their peers. All sorts of wrong, but I can at least see why they would do that. But opening fire on kids not old enough to really hurt others...

And great, I can just see it now. Christmas at my bf's father's is going to be fantastic. His father is going to go on unsolicited rants all day about how gun control is ridiculous, and how the kids would have been all safe had all the adults in the school had carried concealed weapons, yadda yadda yadda. I never get involved with any of his ridiculous diatribes (Obama is racist against white people, Bush actually had found WMDs but kept it quiet for national security, Cambridge MA is communist central of the universe, etc...), but I might actually puke a little this year. As with most political subjects (other than marriage equality and abortion rights), I really don't feel fired up one way or the other about gun control... but I really don't want to hear some dude yelling about it over Christmas dinner, making it all about himself and totally forgetting about the victims and their families. Ugh

I wrote a little disclaimer on my Facebook that I will not tolerate anti-America stereotypes. I am sick and tired of hearing anti-America rants from people who do not seem to give a damn about their own country.

It was just in the paper last week that my city has the second highest homocide rate in the country: more than NYC for example. Did I hear anything about that? No. But some guy with mental disorders goes in a shooting spree and all I hear is how Americans need to stop being gun-happy.

It really sucks what went on. I have been talking about it with people. It is a horrible time of year for something like this to occur. I wish it did not happen.
It has played a huge role on parents here. They have no idea how to explain this to their kids or what they can do to prevent a situation like this from happening to their kids. It is frightening.

I agree it sucks. People don't seem to notice the small little bad things that are going on (like high suicide rates). I suppose it's a little different when they aren't talking about the things happening in your own country. To me, it's all sad. It's a scary, sad world we live in. And what happened yesterday scared me a lot. My husband is a teacher and every couple of years it seems like someone wants to go shoot school children. It seems like no one even has a clue about what's going on until there's a large number of people dead.

what i want to know is how two halves of the same species could "evolve" separately. sorry about your poor understanding of evolution bro. is that genetic too?

😵. They dont evolve separately they evolve together but cause each other to evolve differently. This is a very fundamental concept in evolution mate. I graduated with the top grades in my high school and im studying in cambridge the best uni in england. My dad has a phd in evolutionary biology and is a professor in oxford so mate i think my knowledge of evolution just might be better than yours xS

Pfffffthththththth

Somewhere I read they just did a study and college guys were *not* actually that interested in sexing up random things each weekend. The average partying college male had 3-5 partners a year, on par with the average college girl. But both expressed interest in a relationship rather than anonymous hookups on average.

And yeah, that evolution crap don't fly any more.
*sigh* what grade did u get in maths? Assuming most of the ppl at the college are straight then men and women will on AVERAGE have the same number of partners of courseeee... Wtf man how unintelligent are you?? Im not even trolling man you don't deserve the title of doctor

YOU'RE the one stickin' yer nose where it doesn't belong. DENTAL person. So, get lost.

If you say that's what college guys do then that implies that most of them do that which would bring the average up. So no, they wouldn't be the same number.

I know this is weird but I hate being scared of the dark. It makes me so nervous to go outside at night by myself and I get so paranoid. Doesn't help that my mom told be about a new gang here. Apparently in order to get into it, they have to rape a woman or girl in a parking lot. That makes me feel so much worse about going outside. D:

I think my brother lost out then because he has no idea how to deal with money like my mom does..

lmao did you get your evolution knowledge from your dad through genetics now? congratulations on your high school achievements. i am extremely impressed. no really.

anyhow you are talking about evolutionary psychology which is really, really different from evolutionary biology and most of the field of evolutionary psychology is complete and total BS.

also you have no idea what my educational background is. I could have a graduate degree in genetics for all you know. 😉

And today on my Facebook, an article about the Westboro Baptist Church by an anti-religion and anti-American former labmate and how Michigan passed this gun law 24 hours before the shooting.
Meanwhile in Canada, I have no fricken clue what is going on.

PP: there was a gang in my hometown that beat a neighbour up for no reason. He got off work around 9:30 and was walking the 15 minute walk home when a car stopped behind him. Five guys for out, punched him in the face and drove off. He had to get stitches in his cheek. He did not know the men. Because of that, I am still not allowed to walk home after dark when I visit my folks. It is very frightening. I come from a small, quaint little town.

My cats found a little mouse. They are very bad at killing mice and I really don't like mice.

If westboro baptist church was what I was judging my opinion of the US on, I would hate us too. There are some things I will never understand. The only thing I can take solace in is that it's really just the one family, most of the kids are leaving as they get older and that hopefully they will all die out in the next 30 years.

What grade I got in anything doesn't come into play here. My math abilities are not needed to see that you are the one with a flawed approach. First, you cannot assume that all participants identify as heterosexual. Second, you assume that there are equal numbers of men and women in higher education. Sorry to burst your bubble but: According to the Census Bureau, 685,000 men and 916,000 women graduated from college in 2009 (the latest year for which statistics have been published). That means 25 percent fewer men received college degrees than women.

I'm not certain this is the study I read and paraphrased in my original comment, as I came across that one while browsing, not while searching it out but here is a similar one.

Between 60 and 80 percent of college students in North America have been involved in at least one sexual hookup, according to the study, which defines hooking up as "brief uncommitted sexual encounters among individuals who are not romantic partners or dating each other."

Studies showed that students had varied reasons for hooking up.

According to Garcia and Reiber, 89 percent of men and women reported that physical gratification was important, but 54 percent reported emotional gratification and 51 percent reported a desire to initiate a romantic relationship.

"[It was interesting] how similar college men and women are in their motivations for hooking up," Garcia said.

Despite the uncommitted nature of hookups, 65 percent of women and 45 percent of men in a study of 500 students hoped their hookup would result in a committed relationship.

So, don't assume you know me well enough in any way to comment on whether I "deserve" to be a doctor and expect me to care about your opinion. One's opinion is only worth the value others assign to it and making low blow attacks, claiming expertise through having a parent in a related field and making assumptions are all ways to lower that perceived value. So unless you're willing to have a discussion or have an interest in veterinary medicine, go back to the dental forums.

There's apparently also been more and more shootings here. The lady that owns a restaurant we sometimes go to here, someone broke into her house, tied up her husband and shot her in the head twice. She somehow made it to her neighbors' house to call for help. She survived thankfully.
Another lady that got shot in the head did not survive.

This city is called the bubble because nothing is ever going on. But the surrounding area seems to get worse and worse, and it's closing in it feels like. You're supposed to feel safe here in the bubble, but not so much anymore now.

I welcome people to walk into my house uninvited, bc you'll never have a chance to do it to anyone else again 😀

I think there's a pretty good chance we'll be putting down our dog while both my sister and I are home for the holidays. I don't want to do it because he's so there mentally, but his ambulation in his hind legs has really deteriorated and it kills me to watch him try to do things. I would consider waiting a bit longer, but he's already a good bit worse than he was when I was home for Thanksgiving and I don't want him to become completely unable to walk or anything like that.

It might be a "good" time since you and your sister can be there. Sorry to hear that. I'm dreading the day.

That's part of it too. My sister would really want to be there but she goes to school in Syracuse. I can at least come home easier but my mom and I know she would hate to not be there.

Do it while you're home if you can. I was out of town for the death/euthanasia of every dog my family has had, and it sucked so, so much every time.

A very good friend once said it's better to do it a week or a month too early vs a single minute too late.

This is a very good way to think of it. 👍

The Dr. I work for tells clients to mark on the calendar whether that day was a good or bad day... Once you start having multiple bad days in a row, then you know it is time.. A lot of people become blinded by the one semi good day in the middle of 5 bad days.. The calendar reminds you and makes you think... Was that one semi good day worth the other bad days leading up to it?

Just food for thought.

A very good friend once said it's better to do it a week or a month too early vs a single minute too late.

This is very true. It is so much better to have the chance to say goodbye and let go then feel guilty for not doing it sooner or not being there at all. 🙁

I speak from both experiences...

Please excuse me while I rant . . .

I have a Livejournal account, which is visible only to a small group of internet friends. Last night I posted a rather strongly worded entry detailing my opinions on a very controversial subject. I disabled comments on the post and made it clear that I did not want to become involved in a debate, I just wanted to share my opinion and maybe encourage a few people to think a little differently about the topic. I think that's a perfectly acceptable request.

Well, apparently I forgot to change the security of the post to "friends only" and accidentally posted it publicly. And apparently that makes it okay for someone who is NOT my friend (someone I actually de-friended after she and her friends were unbelievably disrespectful to me during a debate on the same topic) to copy and paste my exact entry to her journal and bash everything I said behind my back. Even worse, my supposed "friends" joined in on the bashing! I wouldn't have known about it at all if it weren't for a kindly friend who informed me that I was being made to look a fool without my knowledge.

Apparently it's a crime to have an opinion that differs from that of someone else, and that makes it perfectly okay to mock everything you say.

Worst part is, I've shared intimate details of my life with these people. People who apparently have absolutely zero respect for my privacy or my opinions. So now I'm deleting everything out of my journal, because there's no way in hell I'm going to continue sharing personal information with these people.

Mate ur whole point was that men and women sleep around the same amount and to prove that to me you quoted a statistic about the average sexual partners men and women have. So then u say i cant assume the majority of ppl are hetero , why not? And then u quote stats about there veing a diff number of females and males at uni. Again u misunderstand everything. Listen, the stat u need in order to back up your point is the standard deviation of each of the sexes. That tells us which sex is more promiscuous. The average number of sex partners means norhing.. PS: u said there are 25% more women than men at uni and yet u said the average number of partners is equal... Err tnx for proving men sleep arround more?

Average number of partners per person, genius. Why are you even still here? 🙄

And thus lies my loss of faith in the human race and lack of trust of anybody. Has happened, in one way or form, on way too many an occasion.
