I have a final in 2 hours and all I can think about at this moment is the (in my opinion) silly lab coat requirement for next year. We're supposed to wear navy blue short-sleeve lab coats in order to distinguish us from students doing clinics. I totally get that. But short-sleeves!? What is the point of a short sleeve lab coat? Isn't a lab coat intended to protect your clothing underneath? They sent us links to a few options online and they were so bad... I burst out laughing at one because the guy in the photo looks like a goofy car mechanic.

All I can say is you'll look super goofy wearing it over a long-sleeved sweater in the winter :laugh:

My point exactly! And I'm always cold... I wear sweaters like 90% of the time, especially in the summer with the air conditioning on. 🙄
 
I was going to take part in a test class at the cooking school where I volunteer this evening (after getting an email yesterday afternoon that a space had opened up--I had previously been on a waitlist for the class), but backed out because I want to stay home to keep an eye on my vomiting dog (sarcastic yay for going in to work on my day off). Emailed the class leader to say as much and her email back said something to the effect of, "I'm disappointed because there were many others who wanted to take part in this" and sounded really annoyed. Not going to feel bad because my dog comes before pretty much anything else and you contacted me yesterday afternoon because (presumably) someone else had to back out also so clearly filling spaces that open up is something that you will do. So bah humbug to you, I don't care if you're upset.

Our coats were long sleeved and people ended up with these filthy formaldehyde-y, greasy sleeves because they would dangle in the dissection. I ditched the coat and used a scrub top and liked it a lot better. With bare arms I had more control and could keep them out of the gross stuff... with sleeves I would inadvertently get them dirty and then it would soak through and get my arms dirty. Did I mention sleeves are filthy? lol.

Not sure why you have to look like a mechanic though; they should just let you wear scrub tops.
 
Anyone know if the OSU peeps are ok? TT, cowgirla, lissa ...

I tried to start working out two weeks ago. I got the C25K app and everything was going great the first three days. Then my knees and ankles started hurting and I haven't been able to walk pain free in a while. Not going to a doctor yet because I feel each day is a tiny bit better and my knees already hurt less, though my old ankle injury is flaring up again. I just hate that when I go and try to get fit, my body shuts me down.
 
You will never truly appreciate the lack of reading comprehension skills in this country until you post a for sale ad on Craigslist. Wow. 🙄

The short-sleeve lab coats aren't for anatomy (we wear long-sleeve white coats for that), they're for the animal handling course. I think long sleeves would be rather nice for an animal handling course... I know when I work at my SA clinic I am often glad I have long sleeves on when I am restraining unhappy patients.
 
Sooo my physics final last night ended up being much harder than we were all expecting. It sucked. Before the exam, the professor handed out a formula sheet. The student next to me still had his notes out and furiously scribbled a bunch of notes/more equations onto his formula sheet and then put his notes back into his bag. It's really rubbing me the wrong way. He didn't blatantly copy from anyone else but it is unfair that he got to use extra formulas the rest of us didn't have. Do ya'll think I should mention it to the professor? 😕

I had a professor once (it was a computer programming class) and he knew people would try to cheat on exams. The first day he told everyone that if you reported someone cheating on an exam in his class you would automatically get an A and the cheater would be sent to the dean. No one cheated. I wish more professors would take his approach 👍

That's an awesome approach. People in my course just really didn't respect the professor (obviously) and I know people cheat in the pre-health classes at my school. I'm conflicted because it wasn't hardcore cheating... but also screw this guy.
 
I probably would have said something to him as I noticed it. :laugh:

I don't see how what he did was any different than bringing his own cheat sheet into the test or even writing them on his arm. Scribbling notes on the formula sheet after the test has started from memory is something else.

If it were me, I would probably meet with the professor and mention it. Then the prof can do what he wishes with that info. :shrug:
 
Sooooo ... I contacted admissions of my IS school about the English requirements. In UG I took a 2 semester sequence of English required of all Freshmen then I passed the writing proficiency assessment with a 10 and didn't have to take any other English courses.

My IS requires 8 semester units and I only have 6.

I'm taking a 6 week Literature class this summer that meets twice a week for 3 1/2 hours. Just shoot me now :bang:

But, I want to know what you guys think, especially since most of you have worked in clinics. I want to better myself, just don't know how to..

Do the kennel attendants have a list of the things(written down) they need to do and by what time they need to be done? I find that very helpful. Then, when they aren't done by that time, you can just point out the list and not seem like such a bad guy.

We had a problem at one clinic I worked at, nobody wanted to do any of the weekly cleaning and it wasn't getting done. We used to have a list that needed to be done by the end of the week and nobody would do it. The weekend person would come in and just be pissed because they got stacked with it all. So, we made up a daily cleaning list. Whoever worked that day, had to do that chore that was on the list. One girl quit because of it, but honestly, we weren't sorry to see her go. :laugh:

I also find that people tend to be ok doing something you ask them to do, if they know WHY it needs to be done and done by a certain time.

For example: The mopping needs to be done by [this time], so that the floor is clean and dry when the clinic opens. That way we have less slips and falls.

^^You should be proud of this and not let them get you down. Sounds like the manager has this all backwards :meanie: They need to be talking to the other people about stepping up their game. They should take a page from your book....seriously.

Maybe they need a list of what they have to accomplish for the day. I personally hate to micromanage ppl (I am a tech supervisor) so I would be applauding your initiative. I do have sheets of things to be done at start/close of shift, things that need to be done when time permits, and that cleaning stuff.

They do have a list of things to get done. Sometimes there are additional things that need to get done in the kennel, and usually I am just relaying a message from my managers (clean the kennels, give this animal this medication, clean the restroom, etc). Or explaining something to them that they might not be familiar with so they can do it in the future without help. I just don't want to come off as a mean person. I really believe I am usually a friendly person, but everyone has their days. But, I like you idea WS about letting them know why it should be done. Thanks!

I would just say all this to the kennel staff directly. It sounds like things are getting lost in translation between the assistants and your manager. Personally, I think you should just go to the assistants and tell them that you're doing your best to keep things running smoothly and that you don't mean to sound harsh. Let them know that it's okay for them to call you out on it if you start to come off as mean, and that they can come to you with suggestions if they feel you could be doing something differently. That way you'll have some peace of mind that you're not being mean, and they'll be more comfortable talking to you directly if they have a problem with your managing style.

Every weekend for me. And it's weird because I try to get more sleep,but I just can't. I think it's because I am dreading going to work the next day. 🙁 (I don't hate most of my job... I just hate getting paid barely more than minimum wage to do my job and the techs jobs too.)

I will say that, taking care of farm animals, my arms get smeared with mud/manure quite frequently. I'd rather have bare arms as long as it's not too cold.

My husband has the stomach flu and I really really really hope I don't get it. I haven't had more than a 1-day weekend in months and I have a 3-day this weekend. Please please please sick gods, spare me!!

Radiology rounds over SA axial skeleton tomorrow. And a very good chance that I'll be put in the "hot seat" and asked to interpret rads.
 
I hate my current track record for cytologies. Every time I send something out, it's no bueno.

The latest is sarcoma in 3 places on 1 dog.
2 MCT on 2 dogs (1 dog had 4)
1 thyroid carcinoma
1 AGASACA

I'm getting tired of mass removals with referrals to oncology. WTF, tell your friends to give me better new.
 
Im just so done. Tried to warn the other assistant about a fear biter dog in our tx area and he snaps back with "oh, thats funny, I've NEVER had a problem with him." Uhm, okay? I was trying to be nice and warn you, but whatever.

The dog bit him....and now the dog has to sit, injured and getting medicated, for 10 more days because the other assistant has to be right about everything.

No one wants to ask for his help anymore due to his attitude, but he has complete immunity due to nepotism.

DUDE. I swear its like the plague here. Lots and lots of lumpy, malignant dogs.
 
Bleh. Sick. My nose is refusing to let me breathe through it and keeps dripping, so I'm sitting around with tissues up my nostrils feeling sorry for myself.

At least my sore throat went away! No sore throat = good.
 
Just found out my 10am flight is delayed and expected at noon. Arggg. That's in 6 hours why do they already know?!
Up until last October I had never had flight problems going somewhere. Sure, had things delayed coming home, but that's not as bad. My luck's caught up with me. And nothing will ever top the cancellation that started this in October, so at least it's not that bad.
 
Our engagement photo shoot got cancelled due to rain 🙁. Unfortunately, my fiancé won't be back to my parents house for most likely a year or so, so we both have to make a special trip down in August 🙄

Ithaca is warm for like... 3 months max out of the year? I'll try to remember the manure part but I see a lot of goosebumps in my future.

My mom was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (they said stage 3 but her GFR doesn't seem quite that low) and I seem to be the only one worried about it. They're making me feel like I'm overreacting by being worried that my mom might die from something that can't be fixed, only maintained. Not to mention the fact that most people die from cardiovascular issues from this disease than kidney failure, and my mom has high blood pressure already. All I'm thinking is what if something goes wrong and I lose her sooner than I ever thought I would. I'm freaking out!
 
Haven't had much luck job hunting, and due to a family situation I'm now in a position where I can't really commit to a regular full time job as things are a little too unstable right now. So I had the brilliant idea: "Hey, I know! I'll check the 'gigs' section of Craigslist - there's always short term work on there!"

Holy crap. If I ever decide to ditch vet school and become a prostitute, I know exactly where to go now . . . :whoa:
