I'm super stressed out since I'm trying to find a home for two kittens and even though I've only been looking for a couple days it seems hopeless 🙁 My old babysitter found two 5 week old kittens abandoned in a boat three weeks ago and after a couple weeks of making sure they didn't have an owner (even though they obviously didn't since they were placed on an old boat and clearly left there intentionally) she got them spayed and neutered and got their shots and was going to keep them and was so excited (and her three kids were very excited too!) since she's a huge animal person and used to be a vet tech at a feline clinic and used to have a cat but decided to just stick with dogs until her youngest kid who has developmental disabilities got a little older so he'd get along with cats better, and she found these two and fell in love with them! Her husband has always been a huge jerk though and threw a fit once he found out how much she payed for the vet bill (which I don't even understand since they owned cats before and currently own a dog so he should obviously have had an idea of how much things can cost, plus he works very intermittently and she is the one who is the breadwinner for the family plus takes care of the kids while he sits around doing nothing so I feel like he shouldn't have a say in how money is spent anyway) and he is making her get rid of them. 😡

I'm just so mad since from knowing him this is obviously just a display of power (since the vet bill has already been payed and unless something horrible happens she makes enough to cover most other health stuff that can come up) and he isn't actually concerned about the cost (and she's not selling them so it's not like they're getting any money back) but just wants to be a jerk since she's been so happy about this. I don't even know why I'm so stressed out since even if we can't find a home for them (which hopefully I will soon since I have a friend who knows someone who has been wanting cats) and they end up in a shelter, young kittens are usually adopted pretty quickly. I think it's just a combination of how sad the situation is for her plus I was planning on adopting cats in a year anyway when I could move off campus and these two are so sweet and super cute (a tortoise shell and an all white fluffy!!!) and I just feel helpless since I want to help and take them myself but I just can't for another year.

Sorry, I just felt like this is a place where I could rant about it without people getting annoyed haha. I feel like my desperation is definitely showing on facebook so no one I know in real life wants to talk about it anymore after I've asked if they want them.

"What about the immigrants that pick your vegetables? Do you like them?" ....😕

This bugs me so much especially since the people who say it are 99% of the time not eating their vegetables from community gardens or small farms where immigrants do not pick their vegetables! It's just so rude and obviously no one likes the conditions migrant workers are in but that doesn't mean by not eating meat you're making it worse. They're two completely different issues.

Pretty much the only other time I get super annoyed about people who are speaking out against vegetarianism is when they start saying "God put animals on earth just for us to eat." It's so annoying because not only is it a kind of egotistical way to view things and also assumes everyone is the same religion as them and has the same exact beliefs within that religion, but I also can't really effectively argue against it without being a huge jerk right back! At that point I usually just tell them I do it for health reasons because even though I do it for my personal beliefs I initially started since I have health problems that are worsened by eating meat.

I definitely understand your frustration! I pretty much never talk about being a vegetarian and sometimes when people find out they just assume you think they're a bad person for eating meat so they try and make you feel bad about what you're doing in order to make themselves feel justified.

The other tech I work with today just decided not to come in. When I got there he texted to say he wasn't feeling well (cough *hungover* cough) and then didn't let me know until like 11:30 that he wasn't coming in at all. If he had just told me at 8:45am that he wasn't coming, I could have called someone else to fill in for him. Instead, I got to do all the work for two people AND train my replacement. The good news is she is awesome (a career-changer like me) and it was fun to work with someone who is so excited about the field but wtf, it's not like I'm being paid double to do the work of two techs. 😡

Because obviously you can only care about one thing at a time, right? If someone throws that "argument" into the ring, clearly they have run out of coherent things to say. 🙄

That sounds like a super sh*tty situation and a crap marriage to boot. I feel bad for your friend. We had a client come in today with a similar situation (okay, I guess just a crappy husband). Her cat has really bad heart disease and shouldn't get stressed out... except that they have a toddler in the house now who goes after the cat and the husband hates cats and yells alot (?) which stresses out kitty. Even though the cat hides all day long and has fluid around her heart, the owner still won't give her up to find a better home. stupid people. 👎

It always amazes me how much crap I get from some non-vegetarians when they find out that I do not eat meat. I don't put it on blast and make my entire life revolve around it. I don't care if others eat meat. I don't ever insist we go eat somewhere different because I can always find something on the menu to eat. I never let my decision to be a vegetarian intentionally inconvenience anyone.

And then there are individuals who insist on calling me out and saying that my logic is foolish and that "oh we CAN'T POSSIBLY go to this restaurant because MommaFox doesn't eat wings!" No, I dont. But I do eat salads and OMG SURPRISE, they serve them there. 🙄 These people literally go out of their way to make me feel like my life decisions are an inconvenience to them, but are surprised when I decline to hang out with them. Probably because you're a pretentious douchecanoe towards me.

"What, is it because you like animals or something?" ....Yes, that is a part of it.
"Well, I like animals too" ...Alright, awesome. Good for you.
"What about the immigrants that pick your vegetables? Do you like them?" ....😕

What kind of logic is that? You had to reach out that far and go out of your way to insult me. Leave me alone. 😡

Annoying non-vegetarians are just as terrible as annoying vegetarians.

UGH. /rant
You changed your avatar! Now on topic, I'm sorry people are being jerks to you about being a vegetarian. I personally eat meat but I understand why others don't. As long as you're staying healthy, that's the important part. I also understand that feeling with others because I'm lactose intolerant and I still have family and friends try to give me dairy products, or we go out to eat and I forget a pill so I take forever to order because I have limited options. Keep your chin up, veggies are tasty too. lol

TBH I think it is complete and utter BS for people to comment on the way another person chooses to eat... be it if they are vegan, vegetarian, an all out carnivore, or the pickiest eater in the world.... I find it utterly rude.... and really why should someone concern themselves with WTF I am eating....

Now I am probably one of the pickiest eaters on the planet.. I won't go into all of the foods I do not eat because the list is longer for those I do not eat than those I do... but suffice to say I do not eat really eat most vegetables and most meats... so that rules out a lot... but see the thing is I never expect anyone to cater to me... I realize I have fecked up tastebuds... I really hate it.. but it is what it is ... so please choose a restaurant and I will find something on the menu and worst case scenario I will eat bread... no biggie.... but please do not make rude comments about your opinion on my diet... I have a hard enough time as it is...

I could never be vegan or vegetarian.. but I would never give someone ****e for their choice of diet...

just my 1.5 cents...

Conversations like these:

"Dogs do not have the capacity to experience complex emotions like guilt."
"Yeah, says who?"
"... Says scientific studies?"
"I don't believe it. Look at him. Clearly he's feeling guilty he peed on the rug."

"I'll share my tacos with him."
"Don't feed him guacamole!"
"Why not?"
"It's toxic."
"Really? I thought it was just chocolate."

Make me feel like this:
:boom:

Yet at the same time, I can't wait to have a D.V.M. because even though I doubt it'll improve the number of people who listen to what I say... at least people will stop telling me "well, you're not a vet, so what could you possibly know about dogs?"

Yeah, I doubt the conversation will improve. For instance, 9PM last Friday:

"Hi Dr. Snow, I'm a friend of [insert current client's name]. She recommended I call you."

"What seems to be the problem?"

"Well, I have sheep and they seem to be itching their butts a lot again the fence. I looked and there's nothing on their butts. I'm not sure what it could be. Do you think you could come out and look at them sometime?"

At least they were interested in your assistance/advice.
I often get met with disbelief about everything.

White gums on a dog? I say take it to the vet. They say gums have nothing to do with their health. I say yes it does.

Vet says yes it does. They stop arguing.

Again.

I have to credit Emiloo for that wonderful vocabulary gift. 😀

I used douchecanoe when my parents were here. There was some guy processing multiple transactions at a drive through atm. Not cool since there were cars waiting. As we drove by my dad rolled down the window and yelled "douchecanoe" really loud. He loved it and had never heard it before. I think I've seen in on here so many times I thought it was an internet thing.

scrolling through fb, come across a picture of a dog with a bandage around his foot. everyone is giving "advice" and the owner says well the internet says to just let the dog keep the wound clean so we're gonna do that so we can hopefully avoid an expensive vet visit. 😕 😕 last time i checked, dogs don't go to the sink and use soap...news flash, the bacteria in his mouth is going to infect the wound. why are people dumb?! *sigh*

so on top of everything else, my arthritic, 22 year old cat came in to see me today. Because she hasn't been eating for the last couple of days, threw up this morning, and isn't moving well. She gets steroid shots for her arthritis because she doesn't tolerate NSAIDs at all and I'm limited in what I can get my hands on. She was due for a shot and I gave her SQ fluids today. But my mom keeps talking about putting her down because she isn't herself.

She isn't even giving the therapy a chance though. I gave her the shot and fluids this morning. And she ate afterwards and got up/was jumping at home. But my mom has convinced herself she's not improving.

that's tough 🙁 i don't really have any advice, just commiserating.. my mom was like that with our family dog, kind of the opposite of denial.

Maybe an extremely expensive vet visit resulting from gangrene will bring them to their senses? Ugh.

I'll jump in with my own stupid pet owner rant: An acquaintance has a kitten with what sounds like severe asthma. Vet prescribed steroids, I think only a few weeks ago. Owner has now decided that the kitten doesn't need the pills every day and shouldn't be on them long term, so she's taken it upon herself to wean the kitten off the pills without the vet's knowledge or consent. This poor kitten can't play or run or do anything without having an asthma attack. And this woman's idea of "weaning off" is apparently to just watch for the kitten wheezing and if she doesn't see it happen, then the kitten doesn't get a steroid pill. Nevermind that she's gone to work 8+ hours a day and has no idea what's going on with the two kittens during that time.

I want to say something to her, but I know it won't help. I suppose I'm not surprised by her behavior - I used to read this woman's blog regularly and she's packed it chock full of complaints about her own medical problems. She argues with doctors about her diagnoses based on crap she's read on WebMD. She will randomly decide to stop taking her medications or to "wean" herself off the same way she's doing to this kitten, because she thinks she knows better than the doctors. Most of her health issues are related to the fact that she's obese, but whenever a doctor suggests a medication to manage one of her plethora of health issues, she fights with the doctor endlessly over it insisting that she'll just lose weight and the problems will go away. Of course she never bothers to lose any weight, so nothing ever gets better. Then she gets on her blog and rants endlessly about how awful she's feeling and how the doctors won't help her. :smack:

Honestly, there should be some kind of pre-screening before anyone is allowed to own a pet.

exactly. She's been hinting at it for like 6 months. Tonight she said she's been ready since then. Well, she may be ready, but the cat probably isn't. She's still enjoying being loved on, started to enjoy her food again. She isn't hiding. She's sitting in plain sight.

You changed your avatar!

I did! I was hesitant because when people change theirs it takes me a minute to go "whaa?" before I figure out who they are.

Your mom's cat?

Ahhh I see. Have you considered having her live with you?

I've tried. My parents like having her around. At least my dad is there to rein my mom in. It still sucks though.

She's so anxious and worries so much. I went to dinner with them tonight and I ditched the crutches and limped so she wouldn't worry about me right now, because it is INTENSE. She assumed the limping was from the knee, so it worked out. I just can't tell her things that worry her. She goes off the deep end.

i feel like my mom projects her insecurities on me and her dogs/our family dogs. it's tough. our old dog had neurofibrosarcomas taken off two separate sites, both primary tumors, and was happy as a clam but as soon as my mom heard the C word she was ready to have her put to sleep, she made it 3 more years after that. i heard everything from "we shouldn't vaccinate her, she's not going to be around much longer" to "she should go to the vet, she's limping and i bet the cancer's back" etc. i wanted to smack her!

I was working at a clinic over the summer one year to help them out (it was not my original clinic, but another clinic in the group of privately owned clinics that I worked for) and one of the techs called me on a Saturday early in the morning, left a message on my voicemail with obvious music and ****e going on in the background asking me if I could work for him because he "was not feeling well". I did not get the message until nearly noon on Saturday and I called him to apologize because I got his message late even though I was going to tell him to get his ass to work... he basically bothered to not even show up or call in sick, he just assumed I would be there for him. I was pissed, the guy was a complete lousy worker and tech as it was, so I brought it up with the supervisor since he claimed I was supposed to work for him, let her listen to the voicemail, turns out that they had been planning for a while to fire his ass and that was the final straw. I felt bad, but at the same time I didn't. All of our coworkers were pissed at me, because I should have "taken the blame and told them that I forgot to come in." BS, I told them to feck off, I am there doing THEM a favor and if that is how I am going to be treated, I will leave, I don't have to work there, I can go back to normal hours at my home clinic and then they will really be screwed. They left me alone after that.

Lemoncat is going for more bloodwork tomorrow. Preop for her dental at the end of July and we're testing her for Atypical Addison's. Poor kitty. She's a lemon, but I love her. I really hope she doesn't have Addison's, or stomatitis, or something else. Blech.

This sounds a lot like my mom. She worries, a lot, constantly, about everything. Including trivial things. And she can be very emotional too. I will tell her anything, unless I know it will worry her, then I wait until I have all the answers before I say anything so that she has the entire story beforehand. Surprisingly, she handled having to euthanize our family dog a couple years back really well, I was shocked, but I think it was because she knew there was no bringing him back at that point.

Best of luck with the kitty, that is hard to deal with.

I am sort of at my wit's end with my best friend.

He complains all the time about how lonely he is and how guys never hit on him and meanwhile he is not doing anything proactive to meet anyone and always makes excuses when we are at the bar and someone very obviously makes eyes at him.

We went to the bar after our area's pride event last night and everyone under the flaming sun was there. He got plenty of looks and even then, he did the whole "no one hit on me...blah blah". I corrected him and he responded "well, he was too old/not my type/shoes were gross".

I am getting sick of going to the bar (even though the music is great and the drinks are strong+cheap) to just go to the dance floor by myself and dance with strangers while I watch him stand there.

I understand being shy, but come on. He has the mentality of "oh well he wouldnt like me anyways" or "I don't wanna be the creepy old gay guy." He isnt old.....sigh.

Just now before he went to bed we were talking about how my BF hogs the covers and he was like "oh, must be nice." UGHEDKSJNF;KSJBGF 😡

I just dont even.

Geez I thought I was a worrier. 🙁 Sorry you have to deal with that on top of the kitty having issues. Hopefully the treatment will work and she will let off a bit.

I just got home from work. My dog destroyed the blanket my Grandma made for me 15 years ago(she passed a couple years later). She shredded it. No way to patch it back together.

I am so sorry to have to be constantly vigilant with my IBD dog. It is so freakin draining.

He eats cat (and dog) poo whenever given the possibility (he has anti-seizure meds which make him very food driven)..

I went and got an automatic cat litter cleaner because no matter how vigilant I was, he would know quicker than I did that the cat pooped. He also follows our other dog around when she is ready to go (she uses indoor poop boxes in the winter- not so much an issue in summer)...

Anyway, at first the automatic cleaner worked, but now the dog knows how to open the lid to get to where the poo is stored.

I can't use a cat door because he can get in anywhere the cat can (stinking thin dog). And those magnetic doors never worked well with our cat.

I am at my wits end, because whenever he has a food indiscretion, his IBD flares up. His association center of his brain must be fried from too many seizures. 🙁

I have tried to "train" him, but he doesn't seem to care. The reward/need of the food seems to strong.

THese days I am trying to give him treats before he gets hungry enough to move towards indiscretion, but it is hard not to end up with a fat dog this way.

Any no-cal treats for IBD dogs out there😕

Not sure if any of this will flare it up, but for hungry dogs we recommend adding green beans to their food and using carrots or apple slices as treats.

This might fall under magnetic door, but what about putting the box in a closet (with the door closed) and a cat door installed for kitty to go through? I'm thinking one of those fancy cat doors that only open when activated by a collar your cat wears. Without the special collar, skinny dog wouldn't be able to get in. Or, what about putting the box somewhere higher up? He might be skinny but most dogs I know can't jump and navigate shelves very well 😉

no-cal treats: my parents always used baby carrots for their overweight labs.

They also now make things from invisible fence that are indoor shields so the dog can wear an invisible fence collar inside and you can place this round machine near the box. It emits a radius and the dog can't get near it without getting a warning beep and then a zap.

apparently they figured out the dog shouldn't be in charge of keeping himself clean 😉 ahh people.

i gingerly took the bait and posted with a little gentle advice and they're grateful and following my suggestions! yay 🙂

Putting the box up higher might be a good idea. That's how we kept our IG from stealing the cat's food at the apartment.

I find it interesting that your epileptic dog has IBD.....

What came first the epilepsy or the IBD?

My dog with epilepsy has had pancreatitis 4 times now... and though he has never been truly diagnosed with IBD, I have pretty much concluded that is what he has. And it is known also that KBr can cause pancreatitis. The pancreatitis never came from high fat foods like is normal in other animals/people as he does not get that kind of food, but really can be brought on by stress or getting something off his diet even a different kind of dog food.

He is on a limited ingredient dog food and gets no treats whatsoever. When he has been sick in the past he can tolerate chicken and rice, but that is the extent of the food allowed outside his diet.

Roc is also very food driven due to the anti-seizure meds - pretty much to distraction a good portion of the time. You could not leave any food within his reach or he would find a way to get it. I have to lock all food away. When we had a cat he used to go litterbox diving as well and I had to build a fortress around it to keep him out though that often didn't fully do the trick. So I feel your pain.

I would say the litterboxes inside the cabinets with the door facing a wall or inside a closet with a electric collar that the cat can wear so it can only open the cat/dog door might be your best bet...

Not sure if any of this will flare it up, but for hungry dogs we recommend adding green beans to their food and using carrots or apple slices as treats.
I have tried carrots and apples... can't conclude decisively, but they seem to be a problem. Argh

Those collar doors didn't work well enough for my cat 10 years ago, but maybe they are better now. She wouldn't/couldn't get through. Can't take that chance with her litter box.

They also now make things from invisible fence that are indoor shields so the dog can wear an invisible fence collar inside and you can place this round machine near the box. It emits a radius and the dog can't get near it without getting a warning beep and then a zap.
Invisible fences don't work on sighthounds in the yard (they are too prey motivated to care and run through the zapping pretty quickly), but might work in a case like this. I am not sure how I feel about zapping my seizuring dog. It doesn't feel right to me.

They sell cabinets for cat litter boxes or if you know someone good at woodwork they could make you one that will block your dog from getting inside. http://www.buzzfeed.com/summeranne/27-useful-diy-solutions-for-hiding-the-litter-box
I am actually moving soon and trying to build a little cat staircase to walk up to a raised litter box.... dog can squeeze through small spaces and can jump high, but he is too clumsy to walk up luttle dog stairs.

Putting the box up higher might be a good idea. That's how we kept our IG from stealing the cat's food at the apartment.
My only hope.

One of my dogs thinks cat poop is a delicacy. I have baby gates that the cat can either get over or under but the dogs can't
Dog is as nimble as cat😳

I find it interesting that your epileptic dog has IBD.....

What came first the epilepsy or the IBD?

Epilepsy came first. And he is on KBr.
I know KBR is known to cause pancreatitis, but he doesn't have that, but I can believe it is the cause.
Not sure it is worth switching when he is under control now.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions...

Just sympathizing, SOV - I have a dog who gets ridiculous diarrhea if she even looks at something that isn't her food (I'm so lucky her new renal diet hasn't wreaked havoc). I was just telling my SO yesterday it's kind of sad going to the pet store - I can't buy her any fun treats👎
