There's a mug making the rounds on facebook "Please Do Not Confuse Your Google Search With My Medical Degree" and I am a part of some of the EDS patient support groups. They are getting up in arms about it because they really don't understand the idea behind it or the reality behind the very frustrating situations medical professionals deal with and I commented when they were getting all up in arms. Yes, there are patients who do appropriate research. The vast majority don't and it would be good if they would remember they are the outliers and that the implication of the mug isn't that we don't want clients/patients researching things on their own, but it shouldn't supersede accepted medical knowledge.

On the human side, for the most part my doctors have been great. During my first pregnancy, I had a bunch of residents doing most of my exams and it scared me sometimes when we had repro conversations and they asked me about endocrine pathways and said that they were never taught in depth about reproductive endocrinology... I hope they really mean they don't remember much of repro endo.

Once my kiddo was born, I feel lucky that most of her doctors have been very pro parent advocacy. Some have made a point of giving the lecture that our kiddos (children with Down Syndrome) don't just not read the texts, they rip out whole chapters and say they don't apply. Our job as parents, in this case, is to know more than the doctor about DS and about our kid. If the doc suggests something that doesn't feel right, speak up. And it's not a matter of us knowing more or less than each other, but we, as parents, specialize in Down Syndrome and read up on it continuously, versus the doctor likely will have less than 1 in 600 patients with an extra chromosome and (in the words of 1 doc) "they sometimes act (medically) like a whole different species."

But a good parent won't dismiss the words of the doctor for google. They will question and have a conversation and together, the 2 will try to find an answer that works best for this child.

I would be surprised if they were taught much about endocrinology. That tends to be something they refer for. That's both the problem and solution with human med. Lots of specialties mean they can go really in depth in their field but not know very much at all about another field.

And I totally get that Zebras among horses will have to know more than the docs. But these people were getting seriously offended. One went as far as saying no good doctor would like it. It's not saying patients are dumb. it's saying that you don't dismiss medical advice for google advice.

Yeah... they don't get it. They might need to see the diabetic patient that comes in and says "Dr. Google told me to feed vegetables to cure my dog. I've been feeding all these carrots and sweet peas and my dog stopped eating anything else. He seems to be getting fatter and his blood sugar is all over the place, but that just means Google was right and your an idiot. Right doc?"

But if they are specializing in repro medicine and want to be ObGYNs, shouldn't they have a basic understanding of the endo for that field? I mean, the roles of Progesterone and Oxytocin in pregnancy, birth and lactation shouldn't be completely foreign right? Or why there is a common enlargement of the thyroid during pregnancy, or the micro tumors in the pituitary and why they often arise during pregnancy and lactation but should recede (or remain, but dormant) once lactation is done and what symptoms they can cause if they do remain and stay active? This stuff is all common in human pregnancy, shouldn't they have some clue?

I'm now being told in the FB group that people should be allowed to safely vent their doctor bashing but I shouldn't be allowed to express my dislike of doctor bashing.

Yup. Scared at what is being missed at the OB then. I was asked some pretty pointed questions one day and then the resident ran and grabbed his supervisor and made me repeat and then they both ran out of the room with a very excited look and that was just the most obvious time that I had apparently given a consult on another patient without any details. I was kinda hoping I misread the situation, and that I had just reminded them of something...

I'm sorry about the FB group. If you've explained your side well, hopefully those that just want to vent will do so, but those with open minds will consider what you've said and actually think about it. No group of zebras is going to get far toward a cure or proper management without an amicable relationship with their docs and that requires trust on both sides.

it's really frustrating. I've seen doctors with EDS who aren't comfortable contributing because of the comments that other patients make towards doctors as a whole. And going into a situation with that mindset puts you on the defensive immediately which diminishes your ability to advocate for yourself.
 
It really does suck. Many parents have fled some of the FB groups recently because of similar conversations or being harassed because they said they were following their doctor's advice on one topic or another (anti-vax are few and far between it seems but mean on our groups). I found a pretty supportive one that seems to listen to all input and shut down attacks and angry tirades pretty quickly but allows for people to complain if they also allow for advice.

I think in general our groups tend to appreciate good doctors, but the working for a child thing might help with that mentality since we start by being part of our kids team and the more people we can get to join us, the better versus feeling like you need to have an adversarial relationship with the dr. We fight the system all the time, but we see the doctors as mostly on our side.
 
the worst part is that it is basically an invisible chronic illness. And some doctors have a really hard time with that. So we do get dismissed a lot or told we have psych diseases and it can be rough to make a competent medical team of specialists (and many may be needed with the different facets of this disease). But these people seem to have no idea that their experiences are outside the norm. And physicians are mostly taught the common stuff first. Because it is what they will use the most. And their lack of education in the area isn't from a desire to not help. Some will refuse to learn. But others will do their research and be an asset.

So my cat just vomited everywhere. He must have eaten a piece of my hair. Some of his poop got stuck and was dangling. Before I could react, he turned around to lick it and proceeded to hurl.

I also always worry about him getting blocked since he steals timothy hay from the rabbit, so hopefully it really was because he ate his own **** :barf:
 
I was supposed to interview for a job yesterday but had to reschedule because the HR person was going to be out. Well, today I interviewed. Was told that the job I applied to had already been filled. Okay, then why am I here? Was then told that the only jobs they had open were a couple of seasonal positions and a part time housekeeping job. Not okay. I purposely applied to that job because it was 40 hrs/wk and included benefits and even though the pay was still on the low side, it would have been adequate for the time being.

I remained cordial and finished the interview, but, honestly, I'm offended that they didn't share this information with me sooner. I probably would have just cancelled the interview yesterday when they called to reschedule if I had known that. If they do offer me one of those jobs, I'm not going to accept it.
 
Not sure if any one remembers the wonderful younger pre vet who got mad at me because I eat meat... But she's at it again. She's again talking badly of me because I was overheard stressing about my physics grade. I have a low A in the class currently, which if I can keep after these last few grades come in, I MIGHT be exempt from taking the ridiculous 10-page final this Thursday. I should know by Tuesday. But anyways. She said i was being superfluous because I was stressed because she has a C and would like to be in my position. Granted, that is accurate. I'd like for her to be in my position too. BUT it rubbed me the wrong way for her to call my stress completely invalid. Stress is a relative thing to me, and everyone deals with situations differently. At the same time, I wasn't even venting to her about it. She was just eavesdropping. So she took what I said to someone else and made it about her. She even posted a rant online about me! Over something she overheard!

That reminds me of how some people get super upset over a pregnant woman complaining about being uncomfortable. "SOME OF US CAN'T EVEN GET PREGNANT, SHAME ON YOU!!!!"

I said this earlier somewhere, but trying to out-stress someone is pointless and usually ends up with more anger/stress on both ends. Is there any way to stop being in conversation with this person? If there's anything I've learned in my young life, it's to cut out the crap in your life.

This is why I don't assume that anything I "know" about veterinary care is a fact until I double check it with my vet. I could have learned from what was actually a bad source, or I might have misunderstood or misapplied the information.

Aw man though...it sure feels good though when she says I was right. It's like yay, I did good research! 😀
 
What is going on with the world? We have had a suicide on campus tonight and now, there's a bomb threat! I live 20 minutes away from campus and I'm triple locked in my house. The world is so scary...
 
What the hell are people thinking when they try to sell furniture on Facebook for top dollar? Over the last couple of weeks I've come across numerous postings from acquaintances trying to sell their stuff because they're moving. They always want what they paid for the couch or armoire or whatever. Do they not understand depreciation? So tonight I came across a posting from a girl who wants to move to Colorado and is trying to sell her bedroom set for $3500. This stuff is not nice antiques nor is it from a high end designer. It's not signed by some long dead famous artist. It's not crafted from endangered species. There is nothing about it that warrants a $3500 price tag.

No one wants to bankroll your move by buying your overpriced used ****.

Because we don't need anymore vet schools. The job market is already saturated. LIS is laughing because, at this point, there's not much better we can do but laugh out of frustration.

Not to mention Oklahoma has that area covered anyway. All the north texas people have to do is move over the line for a year and not only do they have instate tuition that is quite reasonable, they have a good acceptance rate. It makes zero sense. And for the rest of texas, A&M covers that base.

I read the article and it was full of the usual "need more veterinarians to service the rural market" crap ... the reason there aren't veterinarians in so many of these rural markets is because there isn't enough money in it for them. It's not because there aren't veterinarians to do the job. There are some state programs with state-funding to help support them, but in some states those programs exist but aren't funded. Great.

It's just a joke. You can't make more rural veterinarians by simply adding a school and graduating more vets. There has to be a true demand. And it's not a true demand just because someone perceives a need - there has to be enough money in it, too.

So they'll create this school, educate a few large animal vets, a couple of which will actually go into large animal medicine. But the majority of graduates will go into the already diluted small animal market, and continue to drive down veterinarian incomes (or at least prevent them from going up at an appropriate rate).

It's not to say there aren't farms and corporations that could use a vet. I'm sure they are. But if they can't pay enough for someone to start a practice and make a living, it doesn't matter how much they feel like they need a vet. It costs money, and if they can't pay it, there isn't a true market need.
 
My mom has a nodule on her ovary. And my grandma was admitted to the hospital a few days ago incoherent. She's basically gone from semi-independent to completely dependent on others in one week. And I'm stuck in Ohio 🙁

It just makes me wonder if there's anyway to divide things up? Say, just ONLY have a large animal program. I know there was talk of my instate doing this--having a small animal school and a large animal school. It would possibly be less years. But I guess not every vet student knows what they want to practice at matriculation... So then maybe have a year of interdisciplinary stuff and then they go to respective schools? I don't know.

You'd have to change up licensing because currently a DVM allows you to practice on all animals and if you do separate it out, then people can't practice on all animals. Also, you'd have to change up the NAVLE too as well as any state licensing exams. It would require a lot of industry wide changes.

are you going to make that program cost less? the fundamental problem all comes down to money. there simply isnt a way to sustain a rural vet on the salary they would make with the loans they need to pay off. this is why so many people end up in small animal, whether thats their love or not. the irony of opening new schools for the sake of making more rural vets is that these newest schools are some of the most expensive in the country...
 
Got assigned to Ortho vs soft tissue for my holiday surgery rotation. They ended up assigning sides by who emailed about what service they wanted first. If I had known that, I would have responded more quickly. Had really been hoping to work with a particular clinician this time around since i haven't had the chance yet but looks like that's not going to happen.
 
Mass shooting 25 miles from school the other day. Last night a hospital 5 minutes down the road from me went on lockdown. What is wrong with the world?
 
I got free flea prevention through school, and offered to send some to my sister. At the time, I was over a month away from being home and she was due for a dose in 2 weeks or so. I Fed-exed her a few doses. The Fed-ex employee did the usual-weigh the package, I pay, whatever.

So the package never arrived, and I assumed it was lost. Today, it was in my mailbox with a sticker saying I owed x amount of postage. YOU WEIGHED IT YOURSELF! How does that screw-up even happen? They literally put it on a scale and the price pops up on the screen. I don't understand. Now I'm debating on whether or not the $2 I paid is worth it to go get my money back and let them know I'm cranky.

Excellent point. I don't even know where the receipt is at this point. It's not like I'm gonna try to ship it again, I brought the rest of the doses home over Thanksgiving. I paid in cash, too, so there's no record of it on my credit card statement either. ugh

I hate those shifts. I haven't had many of them, but I've had a few dozen+ euth shifts, and they really ... ugh. Just feel beat afterwards.

Is it really that hard to not go through my desk at work for the not even week I am off? I shouldn't be hearing from the associate that you were going through my desk and that she knows where my stash of candy is? FFS if you are looking for something just text me instead.
 
We had a Title IX incident over the weekend that may result in retaliation against the accusing party. And I have to go home for a funeral. I would much rather stay here and ride out the last week of classes with my kiddos than go to that funeral. :meh:
 
I completely mishandled this one particular case. Person adopts pet, wants full work up . Sure, great! Everything is fine, pet is healthy but I incorrectly told person something about a particular treatment, so I had to call back and clarify. No biggie. Then I realize I forgot to bill person for expensive blood work. Then person doesn't get my message about the results of b/w and calls irritated yesterday because they haven't heard back. Then person expresses concerns about the preventative health I did and how they read such and such on the internet and is clearly questioning why I did such things when I was actually pretty conservative. Then I incorrectly tell person something else but don't realize it until after I hang up and go about my day.

I occasionally have one of these problems at a time with a particular case because I'm not perfect and I'm still learning. But never all piled up on one another and I am so frustrated at my lack of attention to detail - which is probably because that day was the most insane one I've had since I started. I just want to call and be like, "I've made a huge mess of everything and I completely understand if you never want to see me again for your appointments." But I also don't want to just keep drawing attention to all of my blunders. Ugh.

I cut a gdv this weekend and never even told the guy about the pexy part of the procedure until he asked me after surgery what he can do to help it not happen again. And then I was like "Oh. Yeah. So. I probably should have talked through the whole procedure BEFORE surgery." Just got addled because of the wall of hospitalized patients, the lobby full of them, and the white board noting all the others on the way and totally biffed my normal pre-sx talk with the guy.

Yeah - the last week has been more crazy than any I've had here yet, and not just for me but for everyone. I definitely notice that's when I start to forget the details, too. I need to just take a moment between cases or whatever to take a breath and compose myself or find some way to make sure I'm not rushing even when I have to be moving fast. It just seems like this particular case just keeps/kept snowballing. Fortunately nothing bad happened to the animal but I just feel disorganized and discombobulated over the whole thing :|

I'm a list-maker. When I start getting too much to hold in my brain, I start making lists. I've had labels printed up for some of my more common stuff. My techs find it amusing that I constantly just whip out my label sheets and start slapping my list-labels on patient charts. But then it gives me checklists that I don't have to hold in my brain.

Critical patient transferring back to RDVM in the morning? No problem - I've got a list for that.

Patient going to surgery? There's a label.

Patient going home? Different list.

(For everything else, there's Mastercard.)
 
Went to the grocery store today on my knee scooter to pick up lunch. I went to the salad section and a guy there kept trying to let me go in front of him - knee scooters are hard to drive and cumbersome. So I thanked him, didn't see a salad I wanted (for my husband's dinner) and kept going. He followed me around for a bit, asking about my ankle and knee scooter. Then he goes, so what's on sale here today. I told him I didn't know. "Well you look like the sort that would know everything." Uh....
 
I wanted to ask on here, and I think the rant thread is a good place, do you guys ever lie about being a vet and just say you're something else? Especially when it's a person you know you'll never meet again? It just seems like it might get boring quickly with everyone asking questions all the time.
