RANT HERE thread

I wanted to ask on here, and I think the rant thread is a good place, do you guys ever lie about being a vet and just say you're something else? Especially when it's a person you know you'll never meet again? It just seems like it might get boring quickly with everyone asking questions all the time.
our 3rd year resident answered the phone one day and someone asked her some sort of medical question. she giggled and said "oh i cant answer that, i'm just a receptionist!" - she's brilliant btw 😉 so yes, people do haha.

Absolutely. I mean. I feel bad lying. So I try to avoid outright fabricating something, and I'll just pretend not to hear the question, or not answer it and asking something back about them, or whatever. But occasionally I've been a sanitation worker or some other profession that nobody would ever want to talk to me about.

Heck yeah. 99% of the time my techs answer the phone in our ER, but for those rare moments when they're too busy and I'm sitting around drinking tea and surfing Facebook I'll answer, and you can bet I am <never> the doctor for those phone calls.

I'm a list-maker. When I start getting too much to hold in my brain, I start making lists. I've had labels printed up for some of my more common stuff. My techs find it amusing that I constantly just whip out my label sheets and start slapping my list-labels on patient charts. But then it gives me checklists that I don't have to hold in my brain.

Critical patient transferring back to RDVM in the morning? No problem - I've got a list for that.

Patient going to surgery? There's a label.

Patient going home? Different list.

(For everything else, there's Mastercard.)
One of the doctors I worked with had stamps made up for some of her more common things, especially spay and neuter surgeries. Definitely a time saver and her handwriting was pretty terrible, so being able to read her stamps is an added bonus.

The doctors at my main clinic before vet school would always respond with their first name if they ever needed to answer the phone, and sometimes they would go and get the "doctor" and pick up the phone again after looking through the record in a slightly different voice.

I know several people who have "airplane jobs," meaning the job you pretend to have when you are stuck talking to someone (like on the plane) and don't want them to ask a billion questions about your job (or ask for an in flight consult). Just be careful. One vet recently flew to a conference and pretended to be an accountant, thinking that was sufficiently boring to stop follow up questions, but the guy next to her was about to be audited and wanted to know the ins and outs of a particular tax loophole, so she had to blow her cover.
The most successful cover id I've heard was ski instructor since most people assume they know what that's all about.

I definitely do this. Because I shouldnt really be answering the phone, but I do when no one else can.

My boss does this, but we are a very small practice and most clients know his first name (and he's the only man there), so they all know it's him answering. Our tech/manager has banned him from answering (or has at least tried too 😛 ), because it has made the problem children clients think they can call the clinic anytime they want to talk to him. And generally not about things that they would need to speak directly to the doctor about either...

oh i am *never* the doctor when i answer the phone for sure!!

i've come to avoid answering the phones because this is always what happens to me. and i work in an enormous practice where statistically its super unlikely that would happen

Lol. But I really was a ski instructor. 😀

Oh my god. I love my partner, but sometimes he is super duper frustrating. I'm a smidge sick - I have a cold sore (only happens when I'm stressed or sick), scratchy throat and feel a bit off. My plan to deal with this is to hang out on the couch, eat ramen and brew some tea with my awesome sloth diffuser, and I told him thus. To this, I got a smart ass comment about tea and a text linking me to a >5 minute youtube video going through the evidence for/against drinking tea while sick, and a second debunking other flu/cold supplements (which - note! - I had zero plans of taking).

MY THROAT IS SORE I JUST WANT WARM THINGS - that doesn't mean I think tea is magical. chill the f out. :bang:

Spam him with pictures of you drinking tea. 😉

Sciencing has been awful this month for all of us. Exchange in the lab office today (between the two calmest, most unassuming ones in our group I might add)

Student 1. Oh my god. **** THIS EXAM.
Student 2: And that's why they make beer.
(beat)
Student 1: And HEROIN

🤣 I can't help it.

a woman was allegedly hit by a car and kidnapped a little over 48 hours ago in grenada. that kind of crime never happens there. makes me sick to think about her poor family and what could have happened to her. just awful. i hope they find her with a good outcome, but :-/

Now I am thinking about my cover career for when I graduate....

Maybe I will make up some random crap like... board game design tester, I can come up with random board games I have "tested"....

Or that I help set up stages for random events and sports arenas or theaters.

Or that I am a kite maker

Or that I create paper airplane designs.

Hmm....

🙁 That sucks.

hitman for hire. with a short fuse 😉

I just avoid bringing it up. I was at the humane society in the cat room the other day and some woman starts talking to me. "I'm pretty sure rabies is a bad disease...I think they can even die from it" and then stuff about URIs in shelter cats, etc. and my husband was next to me trying not to crack up and me being like, "Oh, hm, yeah I've heard that...." heh.

I saw that on a couple friend's feeds. That's terrifying. Let us know if they get any more info or figure anything out...

someone decided it was acceptable to do MAJOR road construction on the road that runs next to my apartment (literally just across the street essentially) in the middle of the night. what the heck?!?! i feel like it is completely inappropriate and unacceptable to do construction in the middle of a residential area!! theres apartments across the street from us, next door to us, and supposedly 1000 units in my complex. GRRRR

Not totally a rant, but just a weird experience I had this evening. I ran into an LVT a a friend's Christmas party tonight, and it's usually cool to run into veterinary people outside of work/this forum, but he was strangely confrontational. 😵 He started off asking if I wanted to do small or large animal, which I get asked all the time, but when I said small he was like "why? You realize you're going to have to work with large animals in vet school, right?" and I was like "uh... yeah. I don't hate large animals, they're just not my primary interest." And he just kept asking me stuff like "so why do you want to be a vet?" "what's your favorite part of working at a vet clinic?" etc. which would normally be fine small talk, but just his tone made me feel so put on the spot and like I was being interviewed. He probably thought I was super dumb because I was giving really inarticulate answers since I was so caught off guard. 😳 And then he was weirdly not understanding when I said this was my last time applying to vet schools even if I don't get in this cycle. I explained that I didn't want to spend the money on applications again and that I'm tired of not knowing where my life will be in a year, but he was all "well, isn't it better to go through that than give up on your dream?" Like, chill dude, I literally just met you.

Also he seemed like one of those annoyingly cocky LVT's. He went on an on about how so many people had failed out of his class in tech school, and he told this story about how he correctly guessed a patient wasn't eating because of an abscessed tooth. Which I guess is kinda cool, but still, it doesn't mean you're smarter than the doctor or that you're allowed to make diagnoses. It could have easily been several other things. I don't know, it was just such an off-putting change from the nice conversation I was having with a friend about the interviews I have coming up, when I'm going to hear back from other schools, etc.

I could feel a sore throat coming on yesterday and when I woke up this morning, BAM!, full blown pain. I'm SO glad this happened when I have an interview this weekend...😡

As of now no new info has been found :\ There is seriously no information... Which is so bizarre considering how small this island is. I don't really understand how that's possible.

Yup. Euthanized every single patient today. Every one. Except for a little kitten that probably is going to check out on me in the next hour.

Merry f'ing xmas.

Oops. Forgot. There was one that I kept alive long enough to transfer to the specialist. Where it was euthanized.

December ****ing blows.

I was thinking it was weird because I don't remember it being this way last year. Then realized, Oh yeah I was unemployed from thanksgiving to January!

Sorry LIS 🙁

I've done tons and tons of short term courses and projects during vet school that I would like to put on my resume, but I can't do it without making the otherwise very nicely formatted page look messy. 🙁

also my cat keeps meowing pitifully at me and I don't know why.

This reminded me that I forgot to feed my cats. Who are both sleeping instead of complaining. Weird.

Why yes road construction crew, I did indeed want to listen to the sounds of your beeping trucks and you ripping up a road all night long. How did you guess? Lets do this every night. Not!

This is so annoying!!!

Two gripes this morning

Garbage day is today. Garbage pick up is 5am, from the dumpster right below my window.

My cat insists that whenever she hears a noise in my room indicating that I'm awake, she must alert the whole house. Immediately. And loudly. And won't stop until such time as I open my door.

Update on the missing SGU professor: Police say they have located the vehicle that was described as hitting her and her dog, and have a suspect, but they have not found or spoken to the person yet.

Plenty of sleep. Average morning coffee. Feel so awake at 7:45 before 8-10am lecture.

8:25am hey the eye is pretty cool
8:30-9:45 Zzz 😴😴😴😴😴

How do professors completely negate the effects of coffee??

Gone from Tuesday at noon to Thursday at six in the evening because of my great-uncle's funeral. And still..... AND STILL..... my Res Life life follows me TO THE RECEPTION AT MY DEAD UNCLE'S HOUSE when a GA for a completely different department gets a hold of another RD, lies to them about what they need to talk about (there was a program (not mine!) last night in a building I manage), and subsequently just starts getting in my face (over the phone) about an incident HE WASN'T EVEN INVOLVED IN last week and starts off the conversation saying he's GOING TO GET AN ATTORNEY. I tell him that I'm at my uncle's funeral AND HE KEPT GOING ON HIS RANT! When I finally got him to shut the ef up, I told him that as far as I was concerned, I'M NO LONGER INVOLVED CAUSE IT IS NOW A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION and that he needs to contact our resource officer or my supervisor (WHO HE SHOULD HAVE TALKED TO ANYWAYS) and that I WAS AT MY UNCLE'S FUNERAL!! He tried to back pedal, but I just hung up.

I was so pissed. So, so pissed. The fact he treated a staff member like that is ridiculous and unacceptable. This is the first time I have actually thought I might legitimately not come back next year because of the job itself. I had thought I would stay in this if my boyfriend couldn't find a better job and I didn't get into vet school. But now I don't know. Thankfully, school closes at 5 pm on the 20th and I don't have to be back till the 27th.

Seems like they've confirmed the body found is indeed hers. How incredibly devastating and sad. I hope they figure out what really happened and take punishment seriously (seems hard to tell, sometimes they are very harsh and sometimes youre left scratching your head). Her poor family 😢

Yuck. That's creepy.

Yup. My guess is the guy hit her and freaked out, maybe he was on his way to taking her to the hospital and she died on the way and didn't know what to do? Who knows. It's such a bizarre and incredibly sad situation 🙁

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's hard to separate Res Life from real life, especially when other people seem to think that Res Life IS your real life. 🙁

Thanks. I am better now and the dean of student affairs (my boss's boss's boss) will be talking to the GA about this and how grossly inappropriate this was. Having that support from my superiors definitely makes me feel better. I loved my job before the situation and now I don't. But that could change easily, depending. At the beginning of the year, I said the only thing that would prevent me from coming back (other than vet school or rich boyfriend) would be a school shooting. But it's amazing how much the little things build up over a semester.

My upstairs neighbors now seem to have a baby. It sounds like it lives directly above my bedroom. It seems to like to cry at the time that I go to bed (which has been inconsistent all this week, and yet every time I lie down, there it is).
I want quiet neighbors! I don't know that I even want children, so I definitely don't want to live within earshot of someone else's. 😡

My truck is dying. My goats are still in the mountains, we're in the middle of moving, there's a chicken coop on the back and the 4 wheel drive and the clutch (tied together somehow) are falling apart.

Do I fix it or pretend to have enough money to go buy something new? (Even better: would it cost the same either way?)

Holy crap, I just heard on the news that this woman is Canadian, from New Brunswick and previously taught at a university in Nova Scotia.

I have a client that is upset at waiting. She is a walk in. I had an 11 o'clock appointment. She is already being seen (within the hour)
What the hell, lady? How dare you not push your appointment for her? 😉

"well the other dr told me I could come in whenever"

Sure. You definitely can. But we see appointments first. Also, she's a little anxious. Her cat is fine. But she's very, very concerned that her cat threw up ONCE
