Iowa recently decided to legalize fireworks during certain times of the year. For the past week, it's been nothing but explosions every night in my neighborhood. Scares my cats and makes my dogs bark. I can't wait for the 4th to be over.
 
I'm so frustrated with our family vet. My dog Gidget who has lymphoma (is on chemo) and has heart problems (on meds) had an episode yesterday where she fell down while stepping over the threshold of our door to outside. She then has been walking abnormally ever since and was just sitting out on the grass after the incident. My mom took her to the vet because I was out of town and he said it was because "she had eaten too much" after looking at the x-rays. She's a little bit better but her gait is still abnormal (walking to one side and kind of running into things). While this may be the case, I feel so mistrustful of him because I worked there for a good while and I know he's super distracted by a client he's dating. And he's constantly brushing off what we think is wrong (I thought my dog had lymphoma in the first place and he pushed doing a cytology off two weeks for an antibiotic shot because he thought it was her teeth even though she had a dental less than 6 months before her lymph nodes were enlarged). I'm concerned that this incident may have been a stroke, but honestly I don't have the knowledge behind that fear. That's why we have him! He's also supposed to be managing her case and when I was working there, literally never asked about her, and would barely do an exam when I'd bring her in. He literally doesn't write anything in the chart for her, I had been having to do it myself. It's really frustrating. Sorry I just needed to vent about it and maybe he's completely justified in what he's doing, it's just hard to feel dismissed all the time.

Time for a second opinion. There is no reason not to is these situations.

Can you take her somewhere else? Your vet won't feel slighted if you want a second opinion. (Or he shouldn't feel salty about it, anyway, if you're worried about that)

Yeah I think that's What I'm going to have to do. I was trying to make this work because we get a 50% discount at the place since I worked there. I guess I need to start looking around in my area for other vets. I might just see if the oncologist we are going to recommends anyone since we are seeing her Wednesday. My parents are also wanting to stop chemo 1) because we've spent more than what they were expecting since she's been a case that requires some finessing and 2) because we were told it could make her heart worse. Now with this potential neuro thing going on, we really need to talk to someone else I think.

I would talk to oncologist first and foremost. Are they at a school or private place? I know at my school people would work consults into all day appts (so may be there for an oncologist appt, but gets looked at by neuro while boarding); that'd be a good option if possible.

We do this a lot at the practice I work at. It doesn't always work out but many of the specialists try to fit things in if they can.
 
I'm in the process of unpacking at my new apartment and I'm having my internet installed today. I hope the guy finishes soon cause I work overnights and want to sleep and maybe run to the grocery store to grab a few quick things. And he smells of cigarette smoke so now I'm worried my room is going to smell.

After this surgery, I've lost 7 pounds in 5 days and I'm dropping fast. I'm nauseous all the time, my life is divided in 4-6 hour chunks between pain meds. My meds now make me sick, but there's nothing in my stomach that I *could* throw up. I'm generally fine if I don't eat, and just drink water and juice but if I try to eat, I feel absolutely terrible. I know this surgery is supposed to help in the long run, but the short term isn't working at all like I expected.

It's at a private place. The oncologist is a consultant who's only there once a week, but they have other specialties there too (it's ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital). But yeah I'm going to call them and let them know what happened and see what they recommend. She seems to be doing ok overall now since this morning with how she's walking, but she's been resting her head on us (and not even closing her eye if it's touching our shirts and blinking against it, I checked that she can still see though) which is kind of strange for her because she's not really a cuddly dog

We have another calf with same symptoms (weakness, lethargy) that is still alive. My dad sends me to Rural King to get a tube since it's not eating from a bottle. The pathologist suggested it might be bacterial so I got penicillin and some lube for the tube. Everything cost like $45. Come back and dad complains of spending that much... come to find on presentation the calf has maggots in the navel area with a swollen umbilical cord area.. peeing out maggots.. lovely. I couldn't help but cry in anger in that my dad didn't put iodine on it when they were born... apparently he never has and we've never had this problem with calves.. went on to say that no one puts iodine or disinfectant on the navel when the calf if born (maybe farmers with a few calves)... proceeded to say I know nothing. At least I was able to get the tube in to feed it and I gave it LA (antibiotic) and Penicillin shots... it perked up a little but may be too far gone with sepsis and everything to come out of it. My parents never take our dogs to the vet and my dad only does the bare minimum with the cattle (vaccines once a year and castration)... I'm like I wonder what he thinks of me becoming a vet... maybe a failure/worthless. He's never said anything but his actions tonight just had me think.. sorry for the long post... it's nice to vent.

Putting iodine or chlorhexidine on the umbilicus is not something I generally recommend, unless it was born in a ****ty environment (which, if that is the case, the are so many more steps I would advocate for before putting anything on the umbilicus). Efficacy is questionable. I know you're upset, and I think it's reasonable with multiple sick calves. My advice is this: try to sit down with him and analyze why this calving season is different than others. What has the weather been like? Any sick cows? Did these calves get adequate colostrum? Hope this one pulls through!

ACCESS has neurologists, and there are others in town as well (I did my specialty internship at ASG). With the lymphoma and the heart problems, honestly could go either way between lymphoma affecting the brain vs vascular, and of course always the possibility of a different type of tumor, encephalitis etc. Or drug side effects (unlikely but you never know). You should talk to a neurologist so they can do an exam and everyone can have a heart to heart about whether you go forward with actually figuring out the cause or not. I'm sorry you're going through this. 🙁

Yeah I figured they'd have one. And yeah I thought with her risk factors, why wouldn't the doctor even consider the possibility? I went to the clinic yesterday to get her blood work done before chemo and I saw in her chart that he marked off (he has exam stickers) gastrointestinal and neuro as abnormal, but everything in the chart was about her stomach being big (which she's a chihuahua and always gets really rotund after she eats then she poops and is normal size again). I'm going to call today and see if we can have a neurologist look at her tomorrow. She seems to be doing ok today so far. I don't know if the effects of stroke will go away on their own? And thank you @nyanko 🙂. I really appreciate the advice. My family kind of looks to me to make the right decision (even though I haven't even started vet school yet haha) so I'm just trying to balance what's right for her and I know they are already very uncomfortable with how much we've spent. But hopefully tomorrow will provide some much needed clarity

Actually the shelters here do 'lab cross'. We'll get dogs from them at work that are obviously pits, but the paperwork all says 'lab x' to avoid discrimination.

All of her paperwork says terrier mix. If people are willing to go by her paperwork, I'm sure she'd be fine. Some places go strictly on physical appearance though, and you know what Gail looks like 😛

Such bull****. It may be fairly accurate in Gail's case (leaving out the fact that breed discrimination in general is dumb), but there are so many dogs that are incorrectly labeled based on what they look like in comparison to their actual genetics. :rage:

I'm going to go see it, but I'm looking for additional places to keep my options open. That one is a shared house situation, so I'm also looking for things where I could be on my own if that's the route I decide to go.

Dr: Big deep breath, and then exhale into the machine. No, no, again, exhale as hard as you can. No, harder.
Me: I AM!!! I'm exhaling so hard it hurts!
Dr: Oh. You really are having trouble breathing. That's only 30% of normal lung capacity. And your pulse ox is only 94%. How long did you say this was going on???? How are you still standing??

Well, thanks. Glad you believe me :-D 🙁 I am now the proud owner of an inhaler and a buttload of other allergy medications.

Blech. That really sucks. I feel for you. I haven't had clear eyes for a month, but luckily only minor sneezing attacks if I don't keep on top of my zyrtec consumption.

Honestly, I feel fine. That's the weird part of it all. It's mostly been annoying symptoms - upper resp sneezing/congestion/itchy eyes, sinus headaches, with occasional bouts of wheezing when in high allergen areas (aka, any barn that has a rabbit in it, certain outdoor cats in small exam rooms). I've been working, riding, hiking, kayaking, running agility courses without issue. I'm super sensitive to antihistamines so I've mostly been going without anyway, just occasional childrens allergy meds. Just took my first dose of new meds and holy crap, I didn't even realize that I had forgotten what oxygen felt like.

Right? It's amazing how you habituate to not breathing well.

I have allergies and asthma. The latter has never really been addressed until a few weeks ago. I was put on Symbicort and have only used a rescue inhaler once in the last month (I was using it every day and rationing it out between urgent care visits). I have so much more energy now and I'm actually getting my more physically demanding projects done now that I can breathe.

That's exactly how I felt after a lifetime of seasonal allergies and REALLY severe cat allergies after only taking Claritin (fun fact: its not even intended for animal allergies according to my allergist -_- ) and then being put on Zyrtec and a few others. I now take 4 allergy drugs per day, every day, just for maintenance and life is awesome. Glad you got it sorted out because you really dont realize how bad bad is until you're just put back to normal.

I feel that. I would love to see a life with less allergies and being able to pet a cat without having to walk around like there is death and doom on my hands until I wash them. But shots. Have to go start my rabies preexposure today too and I'm unexcited.

I don't know if this is really a rant, but...

I'm flying standby today and the flights are really being crazy today. My sure bet this morning turned into 'doesn't look good' while I was driving to the airport. I had to scramble to find other options and now I'm on my way to a DIFFERENT airport trying to make it work but now with extra layover goodness. My twitchy stress is on overdrive.

Yep this is me. I had kittens crawling over me yesterday but only ended up with one hive on my arm and one on my face but it was so worth it.

Kittens usually don't murder me until they are on/around my face or I do a deep eye rub with unwashed hands after touching them (apparently they produce less of the protein we are allergic to in their dander than adult cats). But those adults... no bueno

Yeahhhh these kittens gave me two decent size hives (normally I'll just get little baby ones on my hands from their saliva when they rub their noses on me) so idfk why I'm opposite or something hahaha

My dad started having new seizure and heart problems last year and I remember the fear and panic. I'm here if you need an ear.

Did they break pavers off your front stairs from the old house, damage the ridiculously expensive piano they said they were comfortable moving, knowing how expensive it is, by putting a ratchet strap across the lid and cranking it down tight so it crushes the edge, and break your hanging sign off the house with said piano? Oh and then not do **** about getting it fixed (it's been almost two months) even though the insurance was bought?
I understand your pain, kcough. (We really are the same person) What happened with your movers?

I'm horrible at remembering take meds. really need to be better about it, but I'm hoping the allergist will say okay to IDST and I can start immunotherapy to at least lessen the misery. I'd rather shoot myself up on a regular basis than have to remember to take pills! :-D

And yeah, my body has apparently compensated really nicely. The nurse checked my pulse ox like six times, and kept saying "maybe we'll leave it on longer this time and it will go up... you don't look like you have a pulse ox of 94%" I LOLed.
