Day 6 of overnight holiday ER. Something like 20 discharges pending.

Ew. I hate the two nights of overnight shifts that I already do...I would die if I had to do that many. I am on for basically 6 days straight though and quickly switched from swings to days so I'm miserable.

Waited at home all morning for a sign on delivery package.
Finally had to go to work and saw UPS left a note on the door but they never bothered ringing the bell. Even though my car was in the driveway and the garage door was open.

Now what?

I can’t take more time off work. The closest pick up place is >30 minutes away and they close before I get off work, and don’t have weekend hours?!

Oh and if you want to change the delivery address they charge you. Seriously UPS, wtf? I don’t even know what I’m waiting for but apparently since you have to be over 21 I can’t even sign the dang thing and have them leave it

Welp, first time here on the Rant thread, but I feel like you guys will be able to relate...

I SWEAR TO GOD, if my INSANE organic professor doesn't GET HER ISH TOGETHER, I may strangle her. The last half of this semester she has been bizarrely hostile and defensive about questions and extra problems/resources to help us prepare for the final. She mentioned at a non-required review session for the final that a certain piece of material that we never covered in class would be tested, then didn't go over it in the review session, and then DIDN'T TEST US ON IT after we all scrambled to try and learn it on our own. She's been inconsistent in telling us what material we are responsible for knowing on our exams, and has been disorganized and uncommunicative in her teaching the whole semester. Also? She has 1 set of office hours each week - Fridays 9-10 am (in a program designed for students who work 9-5 during the week) - and then 2 sets of Skype office hours that only accommodate 4 students in each, maximum.

THEN. TONIGHT. She posts our final grades to our online blackboard program, with our averages. Clearly there was a curve applied, which I was duly thankful for. Some imbecile (or two) had the bright idea to complain to her that the curve wasn't big enough, so some students were being unfairly helped. This professor sent out a mass email, saying that due to complaints she changed the grades to a more "standard" scale for Ivy-league programs, and promptly removed the curve. My pass turned into a fail, as did 50% OF THE CLASS. We all wigged out and immediately started emailing/calling/texting advisors and other professors in the program to get SOMEONE to help, but everyone is on break. Thankfully she changed it back later tonight, but OOH MAMA I almost went off. My vet career was almost gone in a poof of insanity. My heart can't take it.

And this all went down while I was trying to pack up my apartment to move. Tomorrow. I DID NOT NEED THIS.:arghh:

I've had a few clients follow me to my new job and my old job won't send records...so freaking dumb.

Check your state laws, at least here that is illegal. Every clinic gets so many days to send records but they have to be sent. Also check to see if they can legally withhold from the client because then the client can just pick up copies.

That’s illegal in PA too, at least it’s illegal to not release the records to the client or at the clients request. I think we can refuse sending it to another clinic unless the owner requested it.

1. No residency interviews. That sucks a lot.

2. All that happens to me on here outside of WW (and inside it occasionally) is people bickering. I have enough negative stuff in my life without bickering. I love everyone but maybe I shouldn’t come back.

It's not too bad generally... that one thread in the vet forum generated some rather heated debate. I was hoping it wouldn't turn you off too much, but at the same time, I gradated with less than a 3.0, so I kept quiet anyway.

At any rate, we wish you well and would hate to see you go. Sorry about the residency stuff... lord knows it's stressful.

FWIW, you can totally survive without matching. I'm in my third year of residency now, and I've never matched - I scrambled for both my internship and residency. Stressful? Yes. Disappointing at the time? Absolutely. But not insurmountable.

Thanks.

I don’t know if I am brave enough to scramble for residency. Specialty internships seem to be the norm, bird in the hand etc.

My cat is obsessed with eating. All the time. Fortunately, I got an automatic feeder and exhibited some tough love and he has always been a good, healthy size.

HOWEVER, for the past month my parents have watched him, and my mom.. well.. she believes heavily in "food is love.," and "well he looked hungry Ash what was I supposed to do, starve him to death?"

Needless to say, my cat has gained THREE POUNDS in a month. THREE POUNDS. 😱😱😱

Someone is going to start kitty weightwatchers this upcoming new year...

Sounds like someone else is on kitty babysitting timeout too

F snow. F night. F cold. F driving in Chicago.

My nerves are shot and I just want to go to sleep.

Why are you driving in Chicago? I live in Chicago! I avoid driving here as much as humanly possible...
Sister in law wanted to see the big city. Got a hotel right downtown and it's a fricken madhouse down here. Underground streets are bull.
Next time we'll come in the summer and stay in the outskirts

Dude. I went home for the WEEKEND. the. weekend.

And the belly that I've been ignoring 4am meowing and turned off the cats' automatic feeder to get rid of is back. Tiny. But back.

"*partner*, why is Tesla fat?"
"Oh I guess I've been feeding them more."
"More food or more often?"
"....both?"

:boom:

So I was minding my own business and taking my mid-morning nap (I love break), and I had an school/exam-related nightmare that woke me up. Then I check my class FB page-someone posted that final grades are up while I was napping. Coincidence?

Also I am just not going to try next quarter, there really is no point anymore. I'll be lucky if I even get an internship at this point.

I know that feel, my SO drove in Chicago last time we visited and we got stuck in the underground streets for probably 10 minutes. My GPS couldn't get a signal, so we were just blindly guessing how to get out of there. :wtf: I love Chicago otherwise, though!

That's definitely frustrating, but one failing class (that you would have to repeat) wouldn't have been the end of your career 🙂

There are underground roads in Chicago where you have to make turns? That sounds terrifying!

Not that this applies to TRH, but would this still apply if you signed a no client 'stealing' clause?
Dear friends: Stop with the "well I might come..." responses to invites. Seriously. I need a freaking head count. "Probably" is not adequate.
When I say that, I'm pretty much not going to come...

Then for the sake of your friends (especially if it's an event where they're buying food and drinks), just tell them you're not coming.
It was meant to be a joke, lol.

ETA though: if people are being that wishy washy about coming, then I would say it's relatively safe to assume they aren't committed to coming. I would send out an RSVP reminder if you can, but having hosted things myself...if someone responds with "Uhhh, I don't know...I have to look at my calendar..." they don't want/can't come.

That just means you can’t solicit clients to follow you. If they find out where you are working and followed you, there isn’t anything that can be done about that. Either way, at least in PA and AZ, it’s illegal to not release medical records within a certain number of days (I think its 3 days here).

Can you really prove you didn't solicit though? Devil's advocate here, because I really don't know much about this part of being a vet yet and I'm curious.

Also is it still illegal to refuse to release records when there is an unpaid balance? I think all the clinics I've worked at, minus one, would give the whole "I'm sorry but I cannot release that record to you" thing when another clinic called. Supposedly it's the universal 'this client owes us $$$' signal, or that's what I was told.

I think it's the other way around. They would have to prove that you did solicit, it's not on you to prove you didn't. Clinics don't own clients so they can't stop them from going where they want.

Sorry, that's what I meant...that if a clinic was going to withhold records and accuse you of soliciting, how could you really prove you didn't?

I don't know if you could and I don't know if it matters. They still have to release records to the client if they request them. If they want to go after you for solicitation they have to have evidence besides just the client leaving.

But I don’t think you have to prove you didn’t. They have to prove you did. Unless they have clear evidence you did solicit, I think you’re fine.

Plus it’s really easy to just google a vets name and find the clinic they work at, so it’s not hard for a client to follow a vet if they want.

It is hard to prove, though there have been cases where there was written evidence.

A clinic can’t withhold records because they believe you solicited someone to leave. They also can’t withhold them because they owe a balance, though the clinic I worked at previously also had the same policy. I was surprised to learn it was illegal.

I think some clinics don’t realize they are legally required to release records if the owner or another Vet requests them on behalf of the owner. I know here veterinary medical records are considered the property of the clinic, but they still have to be released if requested. I think the “they’re our property” thing makes some vets not realize they can’t deny releasing records.

Flew home yesterday after spending Christmas with my family and apparently managed to pick up someone's sickness on the plane. Cough, chills, pharyngeal drainage, yay. I'm on call this weekend and have been called in twice for silly (aka non-emergent) things, but I'm trying to hole up and sleep it off in a cold medicine haze as much as possible. This is just what I needed when I'm primary resident on clinics for two weeks.

Actually just looked it up on the Illinois VMA website, it's illegal here as well (I'm assuming it's a state-by-state thing, but probably illegal everywhere?) but it was mentioned that if it ever went to court there is a chance that you could claim a common law lien and hope the court sides with you. Guess you'd have to find it worth it to go through all that trouble.

Yeah, honestly, I can think of many situations where I/coworkers were told not to fax records over for some reason or another. I never thought to take it upon myself and check the legality of it all. Even something as stupid as "She's price shopping for x surgery, don't send those records."

Fiancé's flight in tonight got delayed several times thanks to the snow in the northeast. So now he won't be here until tomorrow, and I'm really bitter about it. Also doesn't help that he doesn't seem to be nearly as upset about this as I am. I understand that it's obviously not his fault, it's just the weather and bad luck, but if he could show some semblance of disappointment about it that would be nice. Plus just super over the universe constantly working against us 🙁

Yeah, honestly, I can think of many situations where I/coworkers were told not to fax records over for some reason or another.

My ex-boss is a petty dingus, which is the only reason in this case 😉 I did have a non-compete on my contract - 4 miles, I think? - and I ended up 6 miles from my previous practice. My hope is that I get to transition to New Place's second hospital which is something like 12 miles from the previous job. My intention obviously wasn't to steal clients but my previous boss being the child that he is would only assume such and want to make it as difficult as possible for people to leave his practice. Which only makes him look like a giant jerkwad, but he's far too self-absorbed to really notice that. (Are my true feelings showing yet?)

For the general discussion, the clients have not asked for their records and been denied, they've asked the records be faxed and they just never have. I don't know that that behavior is illegal but it's certainly very unprofessional and only hurting the patients. Sigh.

This happened at my house a couple weeks ago. My mom waited at home all day and they never came, only to find a note left on the door. We checked the doorbell and it still worked. I have no clue why they do that, so silly. I'm sorry you don't have a pickup location closer!

Unfortunately, my lease explicitly states that subleases are not allowed. Otherwise that's what I'd probably do. :/

After the holidays, I am going to shoot them an email asking if we could have a formal discussion over the phone about my whole situation. I don't know how open they'd be to me breaking the lease or letting the remaining few months go, but they have very few people who stay there for even a full year and I've been there for two and have always paid way in advance up until now. I'm hoping that they may be lenient in light of the circumstances, but I doubt it.
Oh that’s dumb. Do you know why they don’t allow subleases?!

I hope it goes well and they are able to work something out with you.

That's definitely frustrating, but one failing class (that you would have to repeat) wouldn't have been the end of your career 🙂

Thanks for the encouragement pinkpuppy! Yeah, realistically I know I could have come back from it, but it would throw off all my plans etc. Thankfully it changed back to my passing grade (even if it is low), so I can relax a teeny bit 🙂

You might be surprised at what landlords will do to make sure they get the money they need. I've left leases early multiple times after being a stellar tenant, and my landlords have been great. Ask specifically about re-leasing the place to someone else - I was facing having to stick out a lease in Chicago for an additional 10 months after losing my job (meaning I needed to move back in with my family in NJ), and while the management company wouldn't allow me to sublet, they gave me the option to re-lease the apartment if I could find someone to start a new lease and pay a $300 fee to get out of the lease. Emphasize that you lost your job and that you have absolutely no means of income right now, so rent will not be paid. You'd be surprised at how reasonable landlords can be if you're polite and have a good reason & good history with them.
