Lmao. I mean, poor dog, but people never cease to amaze me with what stupidity they'll come up with.
 
Sometime between bedtime last night and 10 am this morning, my dog developed acute, mild to moderate neck pain. He won't turn his head to the right at all. I have prescriptions into the pharmacy now for some pain control and he's going to be cage rested, but it breaks my heart to see him uncomfortable. Poor dude.

Aww, poor dude. I hope he's feeling better quickly.




This reminds me of a dog I saw this week with severe neck pain. I recommended crate rest, explained what that meant. Owner goes: "Can I take him for walks?"

Yeah, my favorite are the rechecks for back/neck pain. Ask at the beginning "so, how's crate rest going?" "Oh great!"

Later in the appoinment, talking about how the dog is doing: "So when we were out on a walk the other day, he seemed like it hurt a little, but it went away!"

As an owner of a dog that had a pantarsal arthrodesis, developed a MRSS infection, and was plated thrice times, I can empathize! Miriam ended up recovering very well. Hoping for a comparable outcome for Luke.
 
My torso has been covered in hives for over a week now, and I don't know what caused them. Just started pred + a new allergy med and I'm seeing my allergist next week, but I look and feel gross right now.

Also, I woke up sick just in time for my last week of break. :yeahright:

Have you guys ever heard the story about the diabetic cat and the orange? Maybe more of an urban legend, but lol.

An owner was being taught how to give insulin injections to her cat that was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Tech/assistant/whoever brought out an orange and used it as a model for SQ injections so the owner could practice. Owner came back for a recheck and was asked "How are the injections going?" Owner says "Fine, but I can't get her to eat the orange, so she hasn't been getting her medicine!"

I had a 2-week post-TPLO check today. Owner said all the right things about how crate rest was going, dog seemed to be using the limb OK, went over the plan for the next 2 weeks including no jumping, no stairs, etc, thought the recheck went fantastic. Went to talk to the receptionist afterwards and saw the owner have his dog jump into the back of his van to go home. :smack:
 
The stomach flu sucks the last weekend of break
 
I have been having off and on problems with my left knee since it was sore while running agility with my dog earlier this month. Well on Monday I was doing a course and after a cross that I probably should not have performed, it totally gave way and hasn't been stable since. The GP thinks it might be a meniscus tear with a piece of cartilage floating around in there because it randomly locks up sometimes. I have an appointment with orthopedic surgery next week and already scheduled an MRI the following week.

It turns out that my dog is insufferable when I can't take him on 4-5 miles of walking every day plus agility. I don't know how he or I will cope with the likely period of recovery that I'm going to have to go through for this injury. We already do a lot of trick training/mental games/etc but he is a young Toller and needs the physical outlet too. Yay 2018!

If it weren't for cold weather, how would I know who all of the superior, strongest people are? Thank goodness they're around to remind everyone how they're totally not cold right now and how this is totally nothing.

I am not cold right now. But that is because I live in a desert. And I have a blanket over my lap, with a warm laptop on top of the blanket. 😉
 
Anyone else sick of the lack of common knowledge about vet school? I feel like whenever I tell a stranger or family friend that I'm going to vet school, it's seen as an alternative to med school. Or like a "oh that's cute" kind of thing. No one actually understands how insanely competitive it is. Just feel like the hard work I put in and the fact that I got accepted is often under appreciated 🙁

Sounds pretty cozy! I'm lucky my building stays pretty warm despite the somewhat drafty windows. I'm also lucky I no longer live in a place where I have to put plastic on the windows and shovel snow every freaking morning just to leave the house. Not going to be envying you when summer rolls around. I don't know how you guys survive in a place where you can bake cookies on your car's dashboard. 😉

My poor dog isn't used to temps below 15-20F anymore, and his feet can't handle the cold. He can't be outside in this weather for more than a few minutes because he starts limping, and even if I wipe the snow off and hold his foot to warm it up a little, it's only a matter of time before another foot gets too cold to keep on the ground and before enough feet get cold that he doesn't even want to move, and I have to carry him back in. Refuses to wear anything on his feet, of course.

But at least the insufferable smugness coming out of some of my friends who live in MN and MI is keeping me a little warmer over here.

Ah, but really cold weather is the only time I can go outside and do whatever I want! I have to sleep with the fan on because the indoors gets too warm, but better than the summer where I'm dependant on ice packs and air conditioning to avoid the flu-like symptoms of overheating. I also manage to have reverse seasonal affective disorder and what appears to be an allergic reaction to the sun requiring steroids to treat, so that's just a bonus.

Maybe it's different when it's a busted internal thermostat rather than the need to be macho about it, but I can't wait until I have job prospects that'll let me move somewhere colder. I do great at ten below. I'm addled and ill by the time it hits 80.

I'm pretty much a delicate (anti-)hothouse flower.

We could never live near one another, my ideal outdoor temperature is 80 and above

Yeah, different people tolerate different types of weather. I don't do well in humid heat, and it's so, so much more unpleasant than frigid weather or even dry heat. Even Virginia is a little too far south for me, and I hate the humid, swampy, gross summers out there. Just about anything over 80F is terrible unless it's at the beach. Needing ice packs in summer sounds totally miserable, and I hope you can get to some place cool.

I just get so annoyed at people being silly and smug about tolerating cold weather better than other people. I've lived in Chicago and in western NY and have had my fair share of below 0F weather and 2-3 ft of snow. I'd still take that over driving in northern Virginia when there's 2 inches of snow on the ground or trying to get through a cold snap in a place where houses weren't built with this kind of cold in mind and where they literally don't have enough equipment or expertise to deal with any amount of snow.

This isn't intended to be discouraging ... but you're going to want to find a way to deal with it, because it doesn't change once you're out.

There are certainly people that 'respect' veterinarians. No doubt. But there is a surfeit of people who look at veterinarians as "vaccine doctors," "not real doctors," etc. It can get discouraging. I mean, my MD sister, who generally isn't that bad and actually does what her vet recommends, still made a comment to me once that was eye-rolling when she happened to be in our hospital: "Oh wow, you guys have fluid pumps?" I think it floored her that not only do we have fluid pumps and syringe pumps, we had ultrasound and endo/arthro/etc scopes and a CT and ... etc. There's just a natural assumption that we practice medicine out of a classic black bag and that the level of care is about 100 years behind.

Yeah, unfortunately I’ve seen the disrespect that vets get first-hand. I’m aware, just gets to me sometimes.
 
My iPad keyboard no longer has a functioning delete key or an “o”. Figures. Logitech will hopefully replace it but that is seriously disappointing for a moderately expensive accessory that is less than six months old. Boo.

If I could just tote a personal sauna around with me I'd be the happiest person in the world. **** the snow and freezing temperatures here recently. Ugh.
 
Yeah this weather in Indiana has me definitely not wanting to live in the Midwest as a veterinarian.... My prime candidates would be anywhere South of Tennessee and maybe Arizona/Utah.
 
I grew up in FL, btw. Couldn't get out of there fast enough!

Although oddly enough, while I'm quite happy up here at 0 and below, I cannot handle Florida winters -- something about how it stays humid when it gets cooler just makes my bones hurt.

I want to live in Florida, it's one of those places that seems designed for me to like it. Hot, humid, crazy people, crazy weather, reptiles everywhere. Perfect. :heckyeah:

The wildlife is cool until it gets too close (definitely had an alligator or two come after me, and water moccasins still freak me out) and I miss the thunderstorms. The rest of it... not so much.

In FL I sunburn in under 15 minutes, whereas yesterday I went to the beach here and had a great time. Had it all to myself, too!

The humidity is awful
 
My internal thermostat is messed up, but at least I know what to expect from it. I was happy as a clam in a dry 42C a few years ago, don't even think about putting on shorts until about 25C, and I start to get too cold around 15C. It makes living in the frozen north interesting... at least we get nice summers. But for part of last summer I was on a med that can cause heat intolerance. That was no fun... I literally thought I was dying at 20C (yes, room temperature). If that's what a normal thermostat feels like I'm glad mine is broken. Don't know how you folks do it!

I'm considering moving out of AZ in the future and am dreading the re-acclimation process to non-Phoenix climates. I literally am not sure I'd be able to handle 'freezing' temps, because so freaking cold. Hell, I shiver when my apartment temp hits 70. 😛

My house is 68 year round. Unless it’s really hot in the summer then it’s more like 65 or so
Also lol it was -5 yesterday morning
 
Where I live: it's 70's in the daytime right now and 50's in the nighttime.

My cat likes to sleep on her electric blanket at night!

[I have lived in sub-zero arctic weather and in +100F weather ... just cuz it's all good. I am destined to evolve into a frozen glacier or a tropical palm tree.]

I still remember the first time I saw leaves changing. I was 15 or 16 and we went to MA to visit my sister at college.

I've done a good bit of farming and gardening and it was super hard to relearn the seasons once I got up here. Growing up, strawberries came in around Jan/Feb, tomatoes grew for two seasons a year, and nothing but black-eyed peas and okra could sustain the temperatures in the height of summer. I remember one winter when we were set to freeze overnight and we avoided damage to our lettuce by putting christmas lights through the rows and then putting a sheet over it all. It pulled through just fine with that extra bit of warmth!

Or result in massive sinkholes opening up all over the place from the water level dropping after farmers water the crops to get an insulating layer of ice... but there are regulations to prevent that from happening anymore!

I sunburn everywhere if I'm outside for more than 15 minutes so copious amounts of sunscreen is my life anywhere

This used to bug me too but then I realized: I don't know jack about the vast majority of other professions in this world, why should the person next door know about vet school applications?
