RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Having kind of a bad night emotionally. It just hit me really hard how how stupid and how much of a loser I truly am. There are so many things I wish I'd done differently, especially educationally; maybe my life wouldn't have become be an utter trainwreck of depression, inadequacy, debt, and loneliness, then.

But this is so untrue. The past is the past. And I know it hurts, but it has absolutely NO bearing on what comes next. Sure you could choose to believe that your “stupid” and a “loser,” but what a shame that would be because it’s simply not the truth. You are so much more than that and believing those things would do nothing but limit you the rest of your life. You’re still so young and have so much in front of you and you have control of what comes next. It might not feel like it. It might feel like your constrained by money or by your past. But neither of those things have to define the rest of your life. Choose to believe you are worth so much more, because you are.

Not yet, with the crazy overtime I've been doing in order to survive.

I’ll get over it.
This isn’t something you should just have to “get over.” Therapists and medications exist for a reason. You shouldn’t have to go through all of these feelings and thoughts by yourself and just hope it gets better. I hope you’ll be able to go soon <3 😍

... I've got some opportunities open to me, but my last few big commitments ended in disaster, so I can't bring myself to take action when I need to. Like, I know I need a better paying job so that I can....
That PM convo... still on table, if you want me to try to help with some of my contacts. No promises, no pressure. I'm +/- on SDN hiatus but PM me whenever...even 2020 or whenever you're ready if that's something you still are interested in.

Stay strong. Get the help you need without any shame. Work less. Sleep adequately. Try to worry less about money (easier said than done, obv) or it'll be a vicious cycle of dark thoughts. It gets better.

Called to refill my puffer. They don't have it. Asked about my blister packs that should have been ready for me to pick up last week. Not only are they not ready, they're out of stock on one of the meds that literally keeps me alive. I have no meds for Monday morning. The delivery will be in Monday afternoon.

I've been mixing up similar words when writing and typing since the head injury... doing/going, rust/runs etc. Thankfully I talk fine, but there's clearly a glitch somewhere. And I literally spelled speculum 5peculum in lab on Wednesday. Yes, that's a number 5. Someone suggested to me yesterday that I maybe want to talk to my neurologist about this. I really must not be thinking clearly, since that hadn't occurred to me. Called this morning... his office is closed on Fridays.

In case anyone was wondering how my day's going.

Is it a chain pharmacy? Is there another pharmacy of that chain they could either fill your script at this time or bring meds over to the closer one? I’ve had to do that before 🙁

Got the meds figured out. Thankfully the one that keeps me alive is an evening dose, so they dispensed me single doses for the morning stuff at no charge because it was their screw up. But this isn't the first time that's happened, and after standing in line for 15+ minutes while all the staff repeatedly looked up, saw the line getting longer, and continued to ignore the register, I'm fed up and looking to switch pharmacies after I've picked up everything that's pending. The challenge will be finding one reasonably nearby with hours that will work with my schedule. This one is incredibly convenient in that not only are they literally in the building where we have class on Fridays, but they're open weekends, but I'm fed up!

And then my printer died.... <sigh>

I used to use whatever pharmacy is in my grocery store (like Safeway) because they usually have wicked hours 7 days a week! Don't know if that's helpful for you at all to look into! Since I've moved there is a small pharmacy literally across the street that I use instead but they also have great evening and weekend hours too haha

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've had 3 different grocery store pharmacies make mistakes that literally would have killed me if I hadn't caught them myself. Not so sure I want to go back down that road! I might have found somewhere if google isn't lying to me... going to go over and talk to them later on I think, after I pick up the new printer I couldn't really afford. <sigh>

I met my mare when she was 48 hours old, and I bought her on the spot. Her breeder is one of my very best friends. I knew she was likely going to be my last horse, and I had so many plans and dreams and hopes for our partnership. She's 5, and unstarted due to the demands (both time and financial) of vet school. I've done some of her groundwork, but she's been in a different part of the province from me for most of the past 6 years even if I was still up to starting my own youngsters, which I'm not.

What I had last month was my fourth concussion. Concussion damage is cumulative. I already had brain damage from my third... I can now clearly see that I have more. Thankfully I don't think it's bad enough at this point to take me out of vet school.

Horses don't sell well here in the fall and winter because hay prices are high, but come spring Gossip will be for sale. I'm literally crying as I'm typing this, but I know I can't risk another head injury.

(hey @awesomenessity wanna help me move a mare in a few months?) </3

(I know the photos are going to be huge, sorry)

My heart is breaking for you right now. Hugs and love

Awww I’m so sorry to hear this Squeaks! Let me know how I can help, I have more than a few contacts as you can imagine! At least you can take a bit of time with the sale to make sure you find her an excellent home. Hugs [emoji173]️

Thanks nessy! I always knew she'd be my last horse, but I wasn't prepared for it to be so soon!!

I’m so sorry. Such an hard decision to make...I sold my fantastic mare in 2015 after school and horses became too much to do together. She found a great home and I hope your girl does too<3

Whiny rant: Just feeling super burned out and grumpy. I'm burned out with the classwork and struggling to stay interested/motivated. I also want to go into laboratory animal medicine and I feel like lately I've just been noticing so much negativity about it from other students, occasional faculty, friends, facebook (I really need to delete it), and even my parents (my dad still tells everyone who asks I'm going to be an equine vet and is usually good for a somewhat insulting remark about lab animal medicine whenever I'm home) . I feel like I've worked so hard and sacrificed so much...and I do it because I LOVE the lab animal species, I truly want to improve animal welfare, and I respect how much I personally have gained from the research in terms of modern medicine...but this constant stress over trying to be a good residency applicant when the time comes on top of the increasing amount of negative comments/need to try and convince people I'm not this horrible person has been wearing on me lately. I guess maybe it makes me feel a little extra isolated too.

Lab animal vets are awesome! Sorry you're dealing with people who don't understand that. Does your school have a lab animal club? Or can you join a local branch of AALAS? Maybe reach out to your university veterinarian/department for lab animals? There's got to be a community out there that can make you feel a little less isolated!

You should tell your dad that lab animal vets make more money and have better hours than equine vets. 😉

Or that lab animals are responsible for saving millions of lives due to their necessity in the production of life saving medications and surgeries. Just sayin. You can point that out to anyone who belittles the amazing work that lab animals and their veterinarians do.

bats, ski, and genny have covered some big things but the biggest problem most people have with animal research is rooted in ignorance. They don't understand the protections that are in place for those animals, they don't understand why animal research is still necessary, they don't understand the difference between animal research (basic research, learning new things about biology/physiology/how things work in living systems) vs animal testing (safety and efficacy of new therapies for diseases), etc and so on. NABR, BRAD, AMP are all good organizations that somewhat delve into addressing some of these things. www.speakingofresearch.com is also a great resource to clear up the confusion.

People love life saving technologies and new miraculous cures or treatments for previously incurable diseases, but they forget where those therapies came from, how they were developed, etc. I think they need a reminder that none of it comes without animal research.

Edit to add that lab animal vets are around to both support those new discoveries while also serving as a voice to protect the health and welfare of the animals involved, anyone who has a problem with that should rethink if they'd prefer these animals didn't have veterinary oversight. Animal research is a current necessary part of medicine, we're around to make sure its conducted as ethically as possible.

Thanks for the reply! 🙂 Unfortunately he's also of the opinion veterinarians make a fortune...despite seeing my loans. He's had some health issues in the past so sometimes I point out he is cancer free and his heart is working because of medical research...that usually works for at least a day or two. My school does have a lab animal club, but not many people on the board actually have a strong interest in lab animal medicine. I also find my class to be a little cliquey and I just don't really fit in well with my class. I do talk to some of the lab animal vets when I can which helps...I think I'm just burned out with school/in a funk and so this kind of thing is just upsetting me more than it normally would because I'm already struggling a little.

Thanks for the reply! I do try to point that out...sometimes I just get a little tired of it. Especially when its family/friends that I would hope would know that its not full of puppy hating monsters by virtue of knowing me for so long. I think I'm just taking it more personally than I should lately and I need to have a thicker skin about it.

Thanks for the reply! I love BRAD and AMP and I'm all about advocating for the field, which is why I never lie about my interests or work experience etc. I think sometimes it just gets to be draining and I'm in a little bit of a funk as it is so its affecting me more than I'd normally let it. Usually I'm better at ignoring the comments, chalking it up to ignorance, and doing my best to try and educate people...but lately the comments have just been sort of the last straw in an already not so great month.

THANK YOU again everyone for the replies. I really appreciate it!

Hey I love lab animal medicine and vet med in general, but sometimes when my Uber driver or woman sitting next to me on a plane asks what I do for a living I lie and say I work at Culvers (which I did for 5 years so am always ready for follow-up questions which surprisingly rarely come). I also am an introvert and hate small talk with people I don't know. Sometimes you're just not in the right headspace to be advocating for the field, and that's okay too. But if you are feeling good about life and ready for a potentially long, drawn out conversation then go for it and shout it from the hilltops what you do and why it's important. Props either way. Just don't feel bad about taking the "easy way out" once in awhile 🙂 our profession is challenging enough without feeling like you need to do more.

Just my 2 cents. 🙂

My boss always lies and says she's a librarian because "nobody has more questions about librarians" lol

oh no, y’all have to say,

“I’m a consultant for [pick any direct sales]. It’s such a great opportunity that allows strong women like you and me earn thousands on the side while [being a mom, working in retail, X] and the products are AMAZING!!! In fact I think you would benefit from Y product, it’ll transform your life. And you know what? I need beautiful confident people like you to join my team. It’s a fantastic side hustle and you can easily earn enough for a fabulous vacation in no time!!!”

there is not a faster way to get people to crawl away.

@Elkhart your brain is lying to you. Neurotransmitter imbalance is misleading your thoughts down a dark hole. It's a disease and you're fighting it and we all believe in you. I know it seems like it's winning sometimes but we're all on your side. I hope you take this sincerely and don't dismiss it or let your brain twist it into something it's not. You're strong, you're smart, you're an amazing person. My PM (along with many others' here) is always open if you just need to vent.

I am so sick I can hardly focus, I have a microanatomy/histo exam on Thursday and I haven’t covered half of the material yet, I’m kinda going into full blown panic mode and I’m ugly crying and I just want the test to be over so I can go sleep and recover :\

I took all my midterms first year with a raging sinus infection. Anatomy I took with a 103 degree fever. I still passed my courses (although I will admit those tests were not my best) and graduated, so you can do it! And listen to your body and sleep when you can.

My research mentor is lecturing first thing tomorrow. One of my faves is giving us a new lecture (remember that I'm repeating the year so I've heard most of them pretty much verbatim already) last thing tomorrow. There's a quiz just after lunch.

I'm not up to full days yet.

This is a super first world problem kind of rant, but I'm mad, haha.

I ordered a package from an online pet store last week. Realize on the delivery date (~30 minutes after delivery was made) that I sent it to the town I lived in during residency, not my new address. Contact the seller, figuring they'll tell me too bad, so sad, but they re-ship the order to my new address at no cost. Yay! Package ships Friday, 1 of the 2 boxes arrives Saturday (wow! so fast!). Second box is set to be delivered Monday. Monday, it says there is a 'local weather delay' at 5 pm...okay, but it wasn't even raining or anything here Monday? Tracking updates and says new delivery will be Wednesday (yesterday). Yesterday evening, it says delivery attempted at 5:36 but business closed. Well, my apartment office does close at 5:30 so okay... This morning (~10-11am) I update the delivery instructions to say leave at front door and I provided my gate code (gates are closed 24/7 and in theory you can only access the buildings with the code or a badge, but somehow packages get left at my door all the time even when I don't leave the code so not sure exactly how it works?). At 3:59 it updates that delivery was attempted but customer not available/business closed. WHAT. I have been home since 2, the office doesn't close for another hour and a half, and I know they didn't try the gate code because when they do, it calls my phone and I have to buzz them in. FedEx customer support was zero help, just said they'll try again tomorrow. I told them to make a note that they need to use the gate code I provided but who wants to be this happens again?

My other package that was supposed to be delivered today was also delayed, but they said this one was because they put it on the wrong truck. FedEx isn't winning any awards in my mind today. I have dog steps for my bed being delivered by UPS tomorrow...hopefully they do much better!

Edit: About 7 pm someone from the local FedEx called asking for my gate code, to confirm my address, and to ask the name of my apartment complex and it's major cross streets. Now I'm convinced they just couldn't find it (it's new construction and my adddress doesn't show up on most navigation programs) and put it into their system like it was my fault.

Fedex is not winning any prizes around here, either. We have a nice front porch, but there are 5 steps. at the top of the steps, there is a small landing (like twice the depth of a step) and then it widens out to a nice landing area. Fedex will place boxes square in the middle of the top of the steps. If they would go a tiny bit further (like 2 steps) then they could sit the box on the big landing, where it would be hidden from view due to railings and big crepe myrtle. But no.....they leave it, framed by the steps, where everybody and their dog can see it from the street. (our porch is dark grey, so boxes stand out. especially the chewy box). UPS manages to put boxes in the "safer area"...why can't FEDEX????

None of them are any good. UPS once put a package for me at the front door of an apartment in a completely different apartment building in my complex. Like, the building numbers were not even similar (like 7 and 23 different). And the most annoying part is that I only knew that they did this because I called since it was marked delivered, and they said, "oh, it was left at 23D." And I was like...okay????

So far today the UPS packages arrived with no issues. The Chewy FedEx package that has been in limbo for forever is still marked as Out for Delivery By End Of Day. The other package that was put on the wrong route yesterday has updated and now says delivery tomorrow?

Edit: now the Chewy one says tomorrow too. Awesome.

FedEx is, from my experience and my friends’ experience, the WORST carrier that has ever existed. They’ve lost numerous packages and it’s always a nightmare to deal with them when this happens. They’ve disregarded instructions to enter a door code for the apartment complex I live in and put packages in the lobby (as every other delivery man does, evidenced by the dozen packages always sitting in the lobby) and have just left them on the sidewalk in West Philly. You’d think it would be common sense not to do that.

So yea, I totally get your frustration. If you ever have the option to call and request a different carrier, definitely do that. It’s well worth the added hassle.

For background, our yard along with most yards in our neighborhood is fenced up to the sidewalk. Most packages are either chucked over the fence into the yard and are pretty protected thanks to the fence. If the package is too big, then they leave the note that they'll try again or we have to go pick it up.

We ordered a baby changing table and it was being delivered via FedEx. My husband got the notification it was delivered and was like how? He literally left work early to go home in case they'd left it on the sidewalk (I said there was no way, they must've gotten ahold of our neighbor or something). Nope. They'd left it on the sidewalk. In Chicago. I was livid and just grateful my husband had assumed the worst and went to get it.

So all that to say, FedEx is the worst in my opinion.

Sent from my phone using the mobile app because I bought it and I'm stubborn

Very petty rant today. I just spent all afternoon researching backpacks that will work as my 1-bag-carry-on-luggage strategy for my trip to Greece in May because I just booked flights and I'm super excited since it'll be the first international trip my SO and I have really been on together and the first I've planned. Finally picked a bag that looks like it meets all my requirements I want and is small enough to qualify as carry on in Europe. Sure, it's expensive but #treatyoself. Spent a few more hours looking up specific reviews of this bag, weighing the pros and cons for another good while. Finally decide it will probably be the best fit and go to see how much it'll be with shipping to Canada.

They only ship within the USA so I guess back to the drawing board. :rage:

How much does it cost to ship something from the USA to Canada

How much does it cost to ship something from the USA to Canada

Once I pay for the bag, pay the shipping to get it sent up here (both in USD), and probably get dinged by customs - more than I budgeted, sadly. 🙁 A quick glance on UPS quote is like $75 CAD and the bag itself is like $200 USD :dead: Why must I like the shiny things

Find a friend in the US to bounce it to you. Lots of willing folks here I bet!

Thanks, I did debate it but the added cost probably puts it out of my budget. I'll have to find something else that works - just means more research time is needed haha.

No chance you will swing by michigan first? Too bad my parents are doing toronto then michigan at Thanksgiving or I would send it up that direction for you...

Maybe in June but that might be a bit late for a May trip 😉

But thanks everyone for all the offers. If I decide to bite the bullet/finances and get it anyway I'm sure I'll be asking nicely for someone to mule for me

Super petty rant coming up. I have this friend who constantly whines and complains about her cat. She whines when her cat wants to play, when her cat gets the zoomies, when her cat walks on the bed in the morning, etc. etc. I don't really respond, but in my head I'm like, why do you have a cat if you just complain about it all the time?

When my dog is hungry in the morning, he crawls up onto the adjacent pillow and gentle wags his tail in my face until I wake up. I don't mind because A) he's hungry B) I'm always thrilled to wake up to him. 😍

This morning I took a snapchat of his tail-wagging wake-up call and sent it to the aforementioned friend and a few others. This friend messages me and goes "UGH, I'm so glad my cat isn't THAT bad!!" I am legitimately offended by her comment. Like, how dare you complain about MY dog waking ME up? I feel so privileged to have a pet that wants my attention and affection, and who brings so much light into my life.

It’s honestly frustrating as people who devote our lives to animals to see that there are people who get annoyed by what makes animals so special. Some people think they’re just toys and wish they could be switched off or on when it suits them. I wonder what will happen when those people have kids 🤔

@ajs513 Agreed! They all have their own little personalities, just like us, and I love that about them.

The most frustrating part is this friend is a fellow vet-student.
