Horse did not appreciate me asking him to trot today. After a lovely ride yesterday he decided that today he would try to flip over backwards on me when I asked him to trot (at first very politely and then not-so-politely as he continued to suck back). Hello black eye.

@awesomenessity will relate

"He's a bit fresh today"

Oof. Sorry about your face 🙁 My guy yesterday was "Canter?? Oh you mean BUCK right?" No Diego, I never mean buck 🙄

The one I rode yesterday tried to buck me off after every jump. He nearly succeeded once. Horses... they’re the best, man

Also, I’m awfully sore today for how little I did. Didn’t I previously do this as a means to pay my rent? My YouTube channel says yes but my legs say no...

Update to my FedEx saga: both packages were out for delivery all day Friday. Nothing came. Still said out for delivery Saturday but no deliveries. I called them this morning and they say it’s out for delivery for real today BUT if it doesn’t come by tonight I should start to file for delivery failure with the shipper. Awesome, that inspires so much trust that it will arrive.

Caught a really weird bug this weekend that just has me feeling all-over aches and fatigue. And of course my midterm is on Wednesday and I can’t really focus well because of it. :yeahright:

THANKS YOU dingus :sendoff:

Thanks for the random disease, body! I really did need one more thing to deal with right now....

That's how horses do, they lull you into a false sense of security then BAM the corner you've ridden past 1000000 times suddenly has a ghost in it

YUP, the mare I’m lessoning on is as steady-eddy as they come. Last lesson we were doing a grid (kinda long stride and our first ride inside this year), and she decides mmmmmmmm nope, not doing the last oxer, and over her head I went. My trainer said I gave her a heart attack, I apparently landed like Gwen in Spiderman and she was convinced I broke my spine. Nope, I’m fine, just emotionally scarred and will now be using spurs on this horse even through fences 👍

In other news, my school seems determined to **** me out of getting my pre-reqs done. All of my lab options are full, with no other available sections. Less of an issue for biochem lab as it’s not required, but micro is KINDA REQUIRED. Hoping if I rant at the department chair and possibly my advisor they’ll either open a new section or let me into the full one. It would have been helpful for them to have offered general microbiology more than once in the last 2 YEARS, they wouldn’t be having this problem. And this, my friends, is why you do a STRUCTURED POST-BACC to get your pre-reqs done - no fighting for spots in classes because you don’t have enough credits to register before the freshmen! 😡😡😡

So this actually happened to me a while ago, but it just happened again to a friend of mine with the same advisor...

At my university we’re encouraged to go to pre-health advising for pre-vet/med things, and they will review your application. In my experiences I listed my officer position in an LGBT organization. The pre-health advisor proceeded to tell me about their gay child (who’s adopted so they couldn’t disown them... their actual words), then grilled me on what I would do if in an interview my interviewers had an issue with gay people. What would I do/say? What if in the future I have clients that hate ‘the gays’? Would I let their dog die to spite them? (wtf?)

This was a small blurb in my extracurricular experiences section, no heavy focus at all, in which I don’t even mention if I’m personally LGBT or what flavor of rainbow I may be, just that I managed the finances for this organization for two years. This went on for about 40 minutes. Apparently a similar thing happened to my friend, and turns out it was the same advisor, go figure.

@mammalade that is ridiculous! Out advisors say that showing diversity and understanding of diversity is a good thing. They even encouraged me when I decided to take a Women's, Gender, and Sexuality course to help understand things I know very little about to better relate to clients and co-workers. That advisor needs to take some classes or realize things are different today.

@mammalade absolutely not okay, and if your university happens to have an LGBT+ resource center I would see about consulting with them about the best steps to take to report this adviser for their behavior. Every vet school I know about really values and celebrates their LGBT+ students and this person's behavior is off-putting, confrontational, and unhelpful.

@Polocrosse2017 That’s the attitude everyone else has had, working towards understanding diversity and just in general being a good person is usually encouraged. But I suppose some people enjoy living in the past.

@vetmedhead unfortunately we don’t have an LGBT resource center (or really any resource centers of any kind aside from the disability resource center). I imagine there is a way to report this, and I definitely plan to look into it since it seems to be a recurring theme.

I sure as **** wouldn’t be letting them make changes to my application if it were me. If they’re against who you are or the people you support, I wouldn’t want them to sabotage my app at all. Is there another prehealth advisor you can see at all? Or a career center with non-prehealth advisors to help look over app stuff?

@SkiOtter this person is our only pre-health advisor, and I definitely did not follow any of the “advice” they gave me, even the more general information was misinformed. Even normal advising at my school has never helped me, I’m not sure why I tried, but my uncle reviews applications for the medical school he works at and he graciously agreed to help me review my app. He had much better advice even without knowing a thing about vet med. I also had a vet I work with look it over. They both encouraged me to include a relevant anecdote in the “what attributes do you possess/how have you demonstrated these” essay.

Good. I’m glad you’ve got some good people helping you instead

This advisor sounds like my parents at the height of their homophobia when I came out in high school. Gross 👍

It’s been highlighted above, but **** her opinion. I truthfully haven’t found pre-health advisors all that helpful, despite the best intentions, simply because vetmed applications are so different from med school ones. Honestly, the most helpful feedback I received from anyone was from a college friend who’s doing her PhD at Columbia and has done a ton of scientific writing. These applications ARE meant to show who you are, and some extent of that includes your personality. If working for an LGBTQ org was as formative for you as it was for me, that would be a significant thing to leave off. I put mine in the experience section, but left it out of any diversity statements, since I feel like it’s actually less interesting that my life experiences. But being open about that type of thing on an application is a great way to show confidence, IMO, and could be a really stellar addition if written well. YOU DO YOU!

Got my two lost FedEx packages resent by the sellers. They were supposed to be delivered today. One went through a different FedEx hub and made it. The Chewy one went to the same hub that lost the original package...do you think it arrived? No. Ugh. I also ordered a Christmas tree from Target online that this hub was supposed to deliver today and that didn’t come either. I’ve been fairly nice with them so far (it’s not the customer service people’s fault the packages are lost) but its time to start demanding to talk to someone at that local hub. Phone call to customer service #1 tonight at 7 she told me it was out for delivery (despite what the online tracking said) and I’d get it at 8. Call #2 at 8:02 “still on the truck”...got that lady to agree to let me contact the local office but they don’t have a number I can just call. I’m supposed to call customer support back at 10 am tomorrow to get transferred to the local facility. I have an alarm set on my phone...they better have some answers.

Edit: should have read the thread before posting...I hope your pup shows up Mixy! That’s the worst feeling.

Found her 3 miles away and covered in stickers but safe thank goodness

This is more rant but could the vet experts explain the trend of people forcing their pets to adopt a vegan diet? Because i thought pets (especially cats) need to have meat to survive?

Kind of like why people don’t vaccinate their kids. People are stupid. Said stupid people come up with unsubstantiated conspiracies, thinking it makes them smart and subject their dependents to their idiocy while patting themselves on their backs. Nothing new.

I’m by no means an expert (in anything), but in my experiences in dealing with individuals who have this train of thought it’s because they believe they are doing the right/moral/safe thing. For instance, a friend of my roomate wants to feed her cat a vegan diet because she is vegan, and she is vegan because of her moral philosophy. (I did manage to dissuade her). Not exactly the same but in a similar theme, people will feed raw diets because they have been lead believe it is more natural or better for the health of their animal. Or they will refuse to vaccinate out of their fear over the safety of vaccines.

In general, I think many people have the same motivations for most of what we do, but the actions that stem from those core values will differ based on our world views and information we have. For example, most people want their loved ones to be healthy. This leads me to get vaccinated and to get my future children vaccinated. Others may believe the safer choice to support their health is to not be vaccinated. The motivation was the same, but something goes awry in fulfilling that.

Our microanatomy teacher is out of town this week and told us we'd have an assignment to do to make up for it. On Monday (the first day she was gone) we found out it wouldn't be ready until Thursday at the earliest. Yesterday we found out we won't have it until tomorrow. It's due Tuesday, so that means we're stuck doing it over the long weekend.

In response, my classmates decided to Reply All and list the alphabet backwards, one letter at a time

The people I've met who want their pets to be vegetarian or vegan do so because they themselves are vegetarian/vegan, often based on personal moral principles. Personally, I can understand why someone would choose that path for themselves, and it makes sense to me that they want to apply their principles to everything in their lives, including their pets. Frankly, I wouldn't have an issue with it if the dog were on an appropriately balanced diet. (Most of them aren't though, of course.) Some pets cannot be vegan (cats, snakes, etc) and I always educate owners about the why behind that. If they've chosen a pet that requires animal product in some form and they don't agree with that, they can either choose another pet that can adopt a vegan lifestyle along with them, or they can find a food source that meets the animal's nutritional needs that they are willing to compromise on (meat from a source they feel is more ethical, for example). Honestly I haven't had any crazy vegan cat people who did not switch to an appropriate diet when I explained that their cat will die if they keep feeding it vegan, but I'm sure those people are out there.

I don't understand this...Then again we have an exam monday so I guess I'd rather have an assignment than exam [emoji2368] I know you all are having growing pains though and it's a learning curve for everyone. Good luck.

I would definitely rather an assignment than exam, but at least if it was exam, we could've been studying all week during these half days, vs right now we can't do anything because we don't have the assignment :hungover:

You sound a lot like my sister who suffers from depression and is stuck after lots of setbacks (at least you aren't pregnant too like she is!) and still living at home.

You do have a lot going for you. You have a BS and that does open doors. Maybe you have to look at another part of the country where things are cheaper. Apply to jobs all over. Make applying to jobs #2 on your list after going to counseling. You may even find a job that would help you move or give you a small hiring bonus to help with a move. Don't be picky. After saving you can find your ultimate job. Apply to things that you might be missing one requirement for, they still may want you. You can move across country cheaply. Rent a UHaul and only take what fits and you have to have. An air mattress and plastic dishes and a microwave (if the place doesn't have one) can get you started.) You have choices. You are smart and NOT a failure. Depression S****! Hang in there.

yeah we had sys path yesterday so you would've been studying for that yesterday

@Elkhart I'm so sorry for what you are going though. Know my pm box is always open. Like others have said get counseling if you can. Have you applied for governmental assistance? It might take awhile, but it's worth a short to help get you on your feet.

@Elkhart sorry to hear they were so unkind about it. I agree that your mental health needs to come first but I also imagine that the financial stressors are going to put a ceiling on how much better you can feel even with counseling (which is still worth it!) I wish I had better advice or suggestions to offer but I’d guess you’ve already considered most of them- asking family for a loan to move, roommates, changing jobs even if not the best fit for now, looking for assistance programs, going through further training, etc. I just hope things improve for you soon.

There are definitely good avenues a BS can take you. I can't remember what your BS is in but I was qualified to work in veterinary laboratories with mine. The corporate lab would've paid $14/hr I believe which was doable to live on own with supplemental income (like a weekend job :hungover: ). The private lab where I worked, I started at $16/hr (which is currently Seattle minimum wage) and moved out when I asked for a raise to $19.50/hr which was pretty darn comfortable actually.

I also nearly went for a job working with laboratory animals for a private company. Part of the position would've actually involved performing surgeries. I mention this because it seems like you enjoy the medical field still.

My backup (I think I mentioned this only once a year or two ago) for vet school was ultrasound technician. A year of school costs about 10k but the starting salary is about 60k-70k.

For supplemental income, there are all these contract apps now - taxi, food delivery, groceries... I have only done food delivery through DoorDash, and average $18/hr. My friend does InstaCart (not big where I live) and can make over $20/hr. An extra $40/week for a couple hours of work can make a huge difference...heck, that's all the grocery money right there

Also the great thing about moving out of your area, you can find places with a higher minimum wage (like Seattle) but the surrounding areas are not necessarily more expensive. For instance, I just had one roommate and paid $750 for rent (utilities were another $100).

I would be cautious about picking up side hustle jobs involving your car - car insurance companies can get really weird about Uber/Lyft or even things like pizza delivery. Many require you to fill out insurance riders/switch to hybrid or commercial insurance or won't cover you at all if you're involved in an accident while working. Some companies will also drop you entirely if they find out you drive for rideshare companies.

This is pretty much a rave at this point, but the story has played out here...
After 13 days and 17 calls to FedEx, I am now in possession of my order from Chewy.

I tried for days to get connected to someone at the local office to discuss things, but the FedEx customer support wouldn't ever let me. Last night I finally got it escalated far enough to someone who gave me a phone number to the local outpost. Today, people named Mikela and Jason have been my heroes. Initially the contractor driver claimed they were trying to deliver, but after we kept discussing logistics the FedEx manager named Jason finally acknowledged that the delivery people have to be lying and skipping my deliveries because they can't find my complex. Eventually the driver did admit she had no idea where she was delivering to and had moved on without actually attempting delivery. The christmas tree I ordered from Target is still out for delivery on her truck but Jason (who has called me several times today with updates) says he's staying on the driver's boss to make sure she comes back and delivers it tonight.

Edit: Christmas tree has arrived! I wasn't planning on putting it up until the day after Thanksgiving, but after the drama involved in getting it here, I may have to put it up earlier, haha.

You all are the sweetest; thank you guys so, so much. All I think I can really do for now is continue to apply to any and everything I can find and see if I can snag something. It sucks because I don't mind and enjoy my current job, even with the long hours and all of the overtime, but it's just not possible to live any sort of decent life on what I'm making... at least not without the supplemental income of an SO or something. The others seem to be fairly comfortable, but I'm the only one of us who is doing it single. In the meantime, I'm going to try to sneak in a mention of pay during my annual review since I've officially been here for a full year now. We've had such a difficult time retaining and even just finding monitor techs and, from what I've heard, there's been some serious discussion about what they can do to keep us and increase morale. If I could just make $15-16/hr, that would go far. I don't need to be wealthy or even anywhere near it, but I want to be able to, y'know, afford to pay back student loans and rent and other bills. 😛 Unfortunately, it sounds like the decision isn't really up to my boss (who, to be fair, has gone to bat for me a couple of times), but simply what it is that corporate thinks we should make. I don't want to leave this job or this hospital, but I absolutely will unless my pay gets bumped up to something that I can live on.

I did some searching around, and it appears that the absolute cheapest housing option I can find within a reasonable commuting distance would still cost >50% of my monthly salary. So the options are basically a) get another raise or b) look for something better. I figure if I attack both sides, then hopefully one of those two will eventually happen. If not, then I could look into government assistance if need be, though, knowing my luck, I imagine that I'm stuck in that annoying area where I make too much to qualify for any help but too little to make it alone.

My parents have actually come back to me and apologized for what they said, which I appreciate. They've been very accommodating and understanding of my situation up until now so it was honestly surprising to me that they came to me with an outright ultimatum like that. That said, I don't know how serious they're being; I've been told that I'll always have a place to live with them and I can't see them actually literally forcing me out. They're just not like that. I do think they're trying to give me some more push and, yeah, I probably need a bit of that, but I don't know if calling me lazy and a failure and a ****ing child was the way to go about it. Either way, I have several months so I'm hopeful that something will come along in that time period and... hey, I am actually am earning and managing to save a little bit of money, which is a far better position to be in than the one I was in for the majority of last year.

I think things will be okay. I'm just trying to breathe and keep my eyes on the future; I'm not in crisis mode yet.

I'm glad to see that this epic saga had a good ending. There's a reason why I tend to avoid FedEx when ordering or shipping items.
Are you able to get in with your dr during your PTO to get refills on your meds if you haven’t already? I know you were saying it would be hard with how much you were working during the week

Y'know that thing where you don't have time to be sick so you put off whatever you're infected with by sheer willpower until you get some downtime?

I've had low-grade viral symptoms simmering for at least a week. We have next week off. Suddenly today I'm dizzy and lightheaded and shaky and short of breath and congested and have a sore throat. 😒

Better be quick body... gonna be hell week when we go back!
