I went to IVECCS when it was in Denver. I now get random recruitment emails. I get a consistent set of emails from Alaska and South Dakota. Every time I have a driving insult (someone trying to turn right around me when I'm trying to turn left; people running red lights; weaving; etc), I tell my husband we can move to Anchorage or Sioux Falls. We're definitely never moving to Anchorage and Sioux Falls is a stretch. But some times these emails tempt me.

Then out of nowhere Banfield emails me. And I'm like. I'm ER, my dudes.
 
Not so much a rant per se but does anyone have tips for meal prep moving into vet school? Cooking at the end of the night has been one of my typical de-stressors from school because it’s hands on and I LOOOOVE food. Love it. But I feel like I will not have enough time to cook like I usually do. I have a crock pot and thought about getting a pressure cooker to quickly make mass amounts of dal with rice for the week. Interested in anyone else’s meal prep! I become a zombie with an attitude when the glucose levels fall. 😂

Cook while listening to recorded lectures at 1.5-2x speed, lol. I do mean that as a real suggestion btw. I enjoy cooking and baking and I don’t like leftovers, so I am not much of a meal prepper. Hopefully others have real suggestions, but there are definitely ways to make sure you still have time for things you enjoy.

I love food too! I also get tired of eating the same things everyday so I’ve enlisted my boyfriend to learn all my recipes and cooking techniques. I’m planning to invest in an instant pot because I LOVE soups. Since stews and soups take a long time to make, I would prob prep the ingredients the night before and start it in the morning. I also love making things from scratch so whenever I’ve been busy, I prep stocks, veggies, & meats beforehand. Make time for what you love! It’s gonna help us survive vet school!

Air fryer. I had a rule that kitchen appliances that only did one thing were not allowed, but god dammit I love my air fryer. Crispiest chicken nuggets you'll ever have, roasted veggies in 15 minutes or less, and mine is dishwasher safe.

Also a rice cooker. I eat rice like once or twice a week and I always burn it or make mush somehow. No issues with the rice cooker and it doubles as a steamer.

Most things that you can find in the freezer section at the grocery store you can make in bulk and freeze yourself! I currently only make bulk batches of soup and freeze them in 1 cup portions (in a silicone tray with a lid - mine are Souper Cubes) but I’m getting some 2 cup Souper Cubes for my birthday next month and planning on making individual servings of lasagna and shepherds pie (technically cottage pie bc beef vs lamb) and may end up doing Mac n cheese or something else too. I just freeze them, pop them out of the tray, and keep them in a freezer ziploc. This can def help if you’re not someone who wants to eat the same meal every day. If you’re fine with the same meal daily, you can easily make big batches of a protein in a pressure cooker or crock pot, pair it with a grain/starch, and some veggies and that’s a really simple meal prep. I would have chicken (either in a crockpot for multiple hours or a rotisserie chicken from Costco/sams - they’re much bigger and cheaper than grocery stores), rice or roasted potatoes, and peas or steamed broccoli as a meal prep pretty often during fourth year (I wish I had figured meal prepping out sooner…).

Seconding AIR FRYER!!!! Even if the bag doesn't have instructions for air fryer I still put it in & (sometimes with trial & error) it'll come out edible, anyway. My only exceptions are boiling pasta or beans on the stove sometimes, & I use my blender in the mornings to make smoothies. I've maybe pan-fried stuff twice in the last 6 months & never touched the actual oven lol.

I think my roommate has a much more varied palate than me so she spends a few hours on the weekends meal prepping for the week, which is also an option.

Pretty sure Mars stalks me these days because somehow the BP recruiters found out my new location and reach out to me trying to pull me back in on a monthly basis. The money and return to autonomy are tempting…

If you eat meat, it’s hard to go wrong with rotating ground turkey/chicken/beef, rice, and veg. Easy to prep/pack, easy to reheat, covers your basic needs, and will keep you full for a while. Frozen meatballs can take the cooking part out of the equation too.

+1 for an air fryer and/or instant pot. I used my instant pot a lotttt during school

I have a combo appliance that can pressure cook things with a separate lid but can also be an air fryer and it’s 10/10. I know IP has an air fryer lid for some models as well. I like the combo bc then there’s only one big appliance to deal with 😂

UGH do not even get me started on Banfield recruiters. my email and LinkedIn are constantly getting spammed by them! and like I’m pursuing equine medicine for ****s sake.

What flavors do you recommend? I get some Stauffer's meals from Jewel to have on hand for busy nights. They vary widely in quality.

I discovered we have a Trader Joe's 15ish minutes away from me. I have never been there

I am not a vet. I just enjoy SDN after I found this community when I was on a different path. I am currently a paraprofessional at a middle school working on becoming a certified teacher.

I lost my scholarship money because it was dependent on Department of Education funds that have abruptly been cancelled. 🙁 This was a program established long ago by the Clinton administration intended to help the shortage of qualified teachers in low-income schools. I am a little bit older and already have a lot of other debt (undergrad, car) and was dependent on that money, especially now that SAVE has been blocked in the courts.

I need a new job now that pays better to pay for more of this myself, but I have so many friends at my current job and can't stand the thought of leaving. 🙁 I was able to get extra hours. I am running myself ragged working 50 hours a week with a 35-45 minute one-way commute plus being in grad school and it's still not enough.

The Indian microwaveable meals they have are really good. But honestly, almost all of their frozen stuff is really good. I live a couple hours from a TJs but go a couple times a year to stock up on their frozen stuff. The butter chicken and tikka masala microwave meals are a staple, but I also always get the gyoza, orange chicken, a quiche or two, the soup dumplings…there’s only been one or two frozen meals there I haven’t liked and that’s mostly because I am a cilantro hater and I didn’t notice it on the ingredient list.

Butter chicken (my fav), chicken tikka samosas, garlic naan, chicken fried rice, streamed pork buns, gyoza, orange chicken, pesto pizza

New discovery: Cheese Filled Fiocchetti with Pink Sauce​

Can you tell I shop there frequently?

TJs is good for the freezer section and some of their snacks, otherwise it's overpriced imo. I like the orange chicken, scallion pancakes, honey walnut shrimp, various gnocchis, PANCAKE BREAD, and butter chicken to name a few.

RTC, you should check it out and see what the hype is all about. Try to go right after opening on a weekday if you can. 99% of the time, TJs parking lots and stores are absolutely nuts/chaos.

There’s a giant pack of chicken breast (6lbs) for super cheap (they actually lose money on the chicken, as it serves to attract customers to come in!) When I was in college my husband and I would buy a pack and freeze it. The entire pack would last us about a month!

This may actually be the thing to sell me on Costco. Chicken tends to be my preferred protein. I put it in a lot of casseroles and stuff. I eat meat every day because I find I need it to feel full for an appreciable amount of time. Meat is so pricey now with inflation.

It's so hard to beat a $10 pizza that is actually decent. In my area, a standard large pizza is pushing $20-25 these days.

Our Costco is literally 4 minutes away so husband and I probably eat dinner at the food court at least once a week when we don't want to cook. Get the 'going out to eat' feel for <$10 total

Produce is usually cheaper than your local grocery store too (I'm using midwest Meijer/Kroger as my comparison). If you have a close enough Costco, the membership easily pays for itself over the year. Costco gas is also always the cheapest option in my area, so that's also reason enough to get a membership for most families. Eggs are also more affordable at Costco, even considering the current HPAI-induced pricing crisis.

We recently got the Costco credit card to help boost the benefits, too. Right now I'm getting 5% cash back on gas.

We have a Sam's Club membership for my inhalers. Anywhere else, they're 250 per month. At Sam's, they're 20 per month. Even if we don't buy anything else there, that is the ultimate savings for my meds. Pays for itself within the first month
 
If I get into my top choice, the nearest Sam's, Costco, and Trader Joe's are all 2 hours away and it's gonna be a rough adjustment no matter how badly I want to go there 🥴🤞

There's a list somewhere around here where the distances of all the vet schools at the time to random locations was determined. It was made during the early COVID times while I was on COVID online rotations. I think we determined that Oregon was actually the most remote school at the time.

Thread '"Hey Does Anyone Know Which Schools..." - A List of Lists'

I keep seeing questions about which schools highly consider last 45 GPA, allow in-state residency after one year, do grade replacement etc...and I thought it might be useful to compile those things in one place. If you think of more lists that might be useful to add to this list, comment below! Also if you have any additions or corrections in general. Note I only looked at US schools because I may be bored but I'm not that bored.

They were last place for proximity to Cracker Barrel, Cheesecake Factory, and Olive Garden. Maybe fifth from the end for a Trader Joe’s, but top five for Starbucks!

As an east coast transplant, I made my bestie drive to that Cracker Barrel with me in undergrad and her review of CB was "this tastes like a freezer dinner." The girls that get it, get it, I guess. (Maybe "it" is the gift shop or just nostalgia... idk.)

The way I maintained my Costco membership simply for the recreational thrill of driving to Costco in Clarkston and walking through the store and getting a snack 😛

Then they went and built a target in Moscow the next town over (like 15min drive) finished right about the time I graduated so the list is probably incorrect for that one now

Am I crazy for thinking TJs is pretty cheap? It could be that my alternative option is Publix which has just become soooo ridiculously pricy. Aaaand it could be that I live off of mostly freezer foods and snacks lol.

It would def be cheaper than Publix. But for things like milk, eggs, other staples, TJ is always more expensive for me. But it’s hard to beat their freezer/snack section

I used to live in the middle of nowhere. There was a 24-hour Walmart in the closest large town (25 minutes' drive). I was a night owl in those days, so I used to like to go to Walmart at 2 am with the stoners and walk around.
 
Why is licensing so hard… A few weeks ago I had my NAVLE score transferred to my new state with the AAVSB vault transfer. My new state obviously can’t approve my license yet because I haven’t graduated, but they also said they never received my NAVLE score. I asked them to double check, because I had confirmation that AAVSB transferred my score report. The gentleman allegedly checked, and rather rudely insisted that I hadn’t sent it and they didn’t have it. Panicking, I contacted AAVSB, who was actually quite helpful and they confirmed that it was sent, everything was transferred properly, and they had no idea why my state wasn’t seeing the score. They resent the link, and I kid you not, within five minutes of that, my state miraculously found the “original” score report. He clearly hadn’t double checked when I asked him to, was so rude to me, and then acted like he found the original after I had to have it resent. Like, why???

My petty self would be like, "I'd like to speak with a supervisor." Not a fan of needless involvement of management/supervisors. But rudeness is my red line, whether or customer or employee
