I also picked fruit punch for both pregnancies. Almost vomited with the first and was trying not to heave in our kitchen. Husband said, "Don't vomit cause then you have to drink it again." Solid motivation tbh

I'm very fortunate it doesn't make me want to puke because I had to drink it 3 times in my one pregnancy alone.

I literally started retching and commanded myself not to throw up.

Update

(For reference Dr. House is the dean)

I have my glucose tolerance test this AM…. I almost puked drinking that vile glucose drink….

Will report back if I pass
Fingers crossed! I remember I had to do a barium contrast CT once and I nearly threw up the chalky substance they made me drink, I can’t imagine the glucose one it sounds awful.

...........this is my reminder to buy my parking pass for next semester if there are any left lol

Oh man, I have memories of this because I did end up throwing up. I could handle the flavor but the amount was just too much at once.

I mean the glucose drink is gross but it's basically extra sweet flat soda.

Chalk sounds worse to me.

Although as far as "medical substances that suck the most to drink" I'd like to nominate colonoscopy prep.

Oh no, I’m so sorry that must’ve been so stressful! I remember sweating while trying to drink with an entire waiting room around me staring at me 😅

The sheer amount of chalk drink you have to chug!!!! It’s what got me too. I only got through about 1/2-3/4 and walked up and told them if I drank any more the waiting room was going to get a show 😬

At least the barium swallow -while worse to drink in the moment because of volume - only haunts you once.

Colonoscopy prep haunts you at least two times.

Apparently the second years have had lecturers not show up multiple times this semester as there’s no parking!
Okay, well things must be even worse now then, because even on bad days at 9-10am I could always find blue parking at that skinny triangle overflow lot across 16th. It was just annoying having to walk the couple of blocks, and then I’d forget I had to park in overflow, leave and walk out to the lot back behind the VAB, then realize I didn’t park there and have to make the trek all across vet med and over to overflow.

It’s definitely gotten worse since every class is now at the expanded size (150). The overflow lots are routinely full.

idk, I've had a lot of colonoscopies courtesy of Crohn's and I don't feel like the prep is that bad?? but I've always just been told to buy a gallon of a clear juice that isn't read and just dump an entire bottle of miralax in it.

I'm jealous. I was given a gallon of what tasted like thick sea water.

Not me getting into debates on facebook groups about seeds vs pellets for budgies and people saying vets just say to use pellets because of corporate greed like 😭

Thanks, yall can keep your krazy kool aid and i will listen to the actual medical professionals lmfao

Is apple juice with miralax acceptable because if I need a colonoscopy like the GI doc thinks I do I’m asking for that lol
I've never done apple juice bc I like it and don't want to ruin it for myself, but I've done similarly colored juices and always been told my prep was fine.

I want someone to make a Scrubs vet med version
Ugh I wish! I feel like it could be a well-produced Youtube series or something. If only our humor wasn't so niche and dark...

Here beloved pet bird, enjoy your ALL FAT DIET.

If you really want to cause someone to short circuit, hit them with the 'but I thought seed oils were bad?' and watch them combust

Yeah it was FOUR DIFFERENT MODS going on about how avian vets are bad and don’t know anything and budgies need seeds (WHICH I NEVER SAID THEY DIDNT. In fact originally i was specifically talking about my bird that is supposed to be on pellets BECAUSE OF HIS GI ISSUES). I ended up just leaving the group cause like, i get tired of people constantly being like “make homemade electrolytes for your sick bird instead of taking it to the vet 🥰🥰”

Like believe me i know small birds are fragile and stress easily, and i’m very scared of putting my guys under anesthesia but like. Saying a board certified avian vet is a crook trying to peddle pellets just for money was an insane take

Our overflow lot is getting dangerously close to full now since our class sizes are much larger now too and we share it with undergrads + employees. I've been on the waitlist for 3 different lots since I started school here and I'm still in the 130s. I fear the day I might not be able to find parking 😭

Ya I had to leave the hamster subreddit and discord server bc the people are brutal lol. God forbid you feed a perfectly good and balanced diet but because it's not imported from Germany and costs $50 a lb and isn't aesthetically pleasing you're abusing your hamster 😭 Like guys my hamster is a selective eater she needs lab blocks to get all of her nutrients thx

The cognitive dissonance is wild. Good human food should be cheap, but animal food should be expensive? Make it make sense.
Ikr. There's also no papers on what kind of hamster diet is better since no one really does research on hamster husbandry. Maybe there's papers in Germany, but the people in the US swearing by it are just going off of websites with no sources. I think there's some phenomenon going on here that they are associating higher price and aesthetically pleasing as automatically better, regardless of the actual nutrient profiles of the diets.

A lab block diet and a fancy German mix can have the exact same nutrient profile and they will still say the mix is better. You could probably argue something about mimicking wild foraging behaviors or something, but if you have a selective eater then why risk nutritional deficiencies. But it's the internet so you can't explain that to people and expect it to go over well 😆

EDTA: the kicker is that I do feed a fancier seed mix in addition to lab blocks. It's just not fancy enough! Lol

Same here. I’ve had to leave rabbit groups and subreddits because those people are literally insane. God forbid you follow ARBA standards for cages when you have show rabbits, or don’t have the ability to free roam them because they will lose their minds. Or you don’t have the ability to take care of two rabbits at once, because them not having a friend is abusive

Budgies can have a higher proportion of seeds in their diets than other psittaccines without issues but people should realize that the seeds they eat in the wild =/ the seeds you can buy at the pet store (they primarily eat grass and grain seeds in the wild and at all stages of the seed life cycle) so pellets help provide all the nutrition they miss out on by not having that same variety of sources, and balance against the overall fattier content of the seeds available to them under human care.

And also...lol corporate greed as if they aren't also buying seeds from a corporation????? Are they claiming to go out and gather their own seeds or something? People are so funny.

New torture idea, I mean, patient nursing care activity, for vet students. Large animal would have us go pick the horse some fresh grass…zoo med can send you outside and collect that hospitalized budgie some grass seeds.

No literally cause the original poster was asking for help getting their birds to eat pellets and i was just like yeah my boy just started eating them one day and now mostly just chows down in the morning, and now new baby brother decided he wants them since big bro is.

Then the mods were like YOU NEED TO FEED SEEDS and im like girl chill i never said they don’t get seeds, also one has special dietary constraints and they just. Didnt chill and doubled down when i was like yeah ok im still feeding pellets cause thats what the person with a medical degree said

But the whole avian vets dont know anything about budgies and are just trying to push pellets just made me go

This just made me giggle imagining a falconer going to catch a squirrel for their hawk

Like there are differences in quality of foods for any captive species. Idk. Bird groups are weird (said as a bird person) but this is why im excited to become a vet to actually learn more actual scientific knowledge not from facebook groups lol

Damn I wish I had thought of that when I was in academia...we had a heckin lot of hospitalized budgies

FWIW, good knowledge on avian, pocket pet, etc. diets is not readily disseminated in vet school. Also depends on which school you end up at too. Even so, I went to a verrry exotics/zoo heavy school and I didn't think we spent enough time on diets in my exotics/zoo electives. A lot of reputable brands offer great educational info geared towards vets, but there is usually a subtle sales pitch in those resources too. It's hard to find good, peer reviewed diet info for exotics. But I'm also a nutritionist wannabe so it's never gonna be enough lol.

Some of the more legit bird nerds and herpers can spout off some excellent wisdom about husbandry/diets but they're the diamonds in the rough considering how many random blogs, groups, pet store employees and threads are out there with people talking utter nonsense.

Idk, I think holding a budgie for an exam/treatments is far more torturous...I mean, educational....than collecting seeds. Collecting seeds would leave their cuticles intact, so they aren't getting the full experience of budgie medical care.

Yeah, i already know i’m gonna have to do some additional CE and research for my specific interests. As of right now i plan on specializing.

Social media is kind of a mixed bag because occasionally there are those actual really good sources. It’s just a matter of sifting through and discerning critically if something someone is saying sounds factual and why it could be. Some groups are definitely better than others lol
