I think it depends. This is probably the minority of people, but I do know a small handful of people that got creative (or maybe just smart?) about their repayment approach in the context of PSLF and are set to pay essentially nothing of their initial balance before it's all forgiven. If that still happens. My coworker is doing this and I believe her 120th payment is imminent so I'm very curious to see how it plays out for her

I think the COVID forbearances really made that more possible than before though. If that hadn’t happened, people wouldn’t have been able to go five of their ten years without making any payments; PSLF you still have to be on an income based plan for those 10 years. I’m not denying some people do creative accounting and get their AGI as low as possible to minimize their payments (and they should, that’s no different than utilizing the tax loopholes). I was more referring to the 20-25 yr taxes at the end plans that most vets are using. The whole premise of PSLF is that you get the better perks because you’ve done public service and didn’t take higher paying private jobs. But it’s a good call out that it does vary.

Plenty of older vets with minimal or no debt, or younger vets that were/are able to pay OOP for tuition, who absolutely have the 'pay back what you owe, it was your choice' mindset. I see it fairly often in the various DVM Facebook groups.

Oh no I know it’s there and there’s no monolith against it or for it in terms of opinion. I hear it from my own family. I’m just stating it’s beyond me how they support it along with everything else rolled up into the BBB.
The “it’s your choice” and “pay it back” are common adages seen in the entirety of student loan forgiveness, not just vet med. I personally find there is a lot of personal circumstance & privilege that goes into loans and not everyone has the same starting place, and sometimes these opinions could extend some more empathy to individuals who are working with what they have. Idk, I just think there has to be a better way to honor education, ballooning loans, & medical services than what’s in the BBB. 🤷‍♀️

Like….HOW much was forgiven in PPP repayment for businesses and politicians but the mere idea of student loan forgiveness makes people (even people with student loans) go rabid with individualistic bootstrap-ism. How much did the kushners get in aid through PPP for their associated businesses that they did NOT pay back?!
I’m not saying throw caution to the wind & don’t consider finances at all in life.
BUT…
Vets supporting the BBB should be equally furious over forgiven PPP loans if “repaying what you owe” with interest is that important to them.

I think those in support of the BBB can also realize there is a double standard that exists.

this is my biggest sticking point about it. So many people are ignorant to their own luck/circumstance. Yeah you paid it off, did you forget that your parents paid for your undergrad/bought you a car/bought you a house etc etc. some people still mention those things in their success stories and then act like it shouldn't be hard for everyone else to pay their balances OOP in only a few years

If I were to just pay the interest every month for the 20 years and save for the tax bomb, I would likely pay less than the principle tbh. And I bet this gets more and more true (under the current loan structure) the higher your balance. I'd have to make an excel sheet to be sure.

This I also agree with and every person who took out a PPP loan during COVID should have to prove the expenses they used it for and justify the business use. But that's never going to happen with any administration.

I've been surprised at how many parents of college-aged kids are doing that! I know we have at least one parent active on here. I mean no offense but the future applicant needs to be the one asking these questions and figuring this stuff out, not the parent. I guess if the child is really young (<16 to me, but subjective) I get a parent wanting to understand more about the path. But after that...

Total aside - this is giving me the best throwback to when the APVMA group had that one parent in it who faked being an advisor for a vet school and was constantly spouting off blatantly wrong info. @battie do you remember that? I actually ended up having that daughter as an extern at one point, it was crazy to connect those dots.

I understand if parents want to be involved in the application process-nothing makes me happier than seeing a supportive parent-but yes, I really do think the students should be the ones doing the research and digging into the nitty gritty. My parents just threw me into the deep end of college applications and were like, "just figure it out. Good luck!"

It's one thing if the parent is asking questions because they're interested in the process and want to support their kid. It's a whole other can of worms if the parent is doing the research for their child and then handing the info to them because the kid couldn't be bothered to.

At least where I teach, student information is protected. If they are over 18, they have to give consent for me to tell their parent their grade. I do occasionally have dual enrollment kids which is fun.

While I definitely agree that students should handle a lot of it themselves, I will take an active parent who cares over the alternative. The single father my sister used to nanny for (well, now he’s married but that’s beside the point) has twins who are hs seniors. His daughter is class salutatorian and wants to be a nurse, but he is strongly trying to convince her it’s useless and she should just stay on the farm. My sister doesn’t even work for him anymore but she’s helping this former nanny-child navigate scholarships and applying on her own. The dad is even more against the boy twin going to college and is throwing away mail about colleges before they get a chance to read it. And the whole thing is silly because though they are a family of ranchers for generations he has a special needs 23 yr old son who will need assistance when the dad gets to the point he can’t be a caretaker, and having a nurse in the family would be nice monetarily and knowledge wise, even beyond her own wishes to get away from the ranch and her town of 800 people.

This drives me up a wall. My younger BIL has zero life skills and is absolutely screwed when his parents die. No way is he coming to my house in that scenario

I've been surprised at how many parents of college-aged kids are doing that!

Now my husband has independence issues to the point where for a hot second, he wouldn't make food for me a decent 1/3 of the time. His younger brother has independence issues in the opposite direction; he has no idea how to live independently. Doesn't even do his own laundry

Feel ya. FIL finally diagnosed with Autism. Hubby had to parent him his whole life. His meltdowns normally involve "I don't know how to xyz that" e.g he didn't want a burrito for dinner so he said "He didn't know how to eat that."
I've learned a lot about empathy and communication, but it is trying at times.

This is so sad, but I'm glad your sister can still be a resource and safe adult for them. While I've been on my job hunt I have seen SO MANY ads for nurses. I know there are burnout and low staffing issues like everywhere else in any medical field, but dang it seems like the job security is great. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from following that path, especially someone that might need to help support other family members in the future?? Like could this guy be shooting himself in the foot any more directly?

Ironically what pushed me to double major in bio is that i didnt want to only be around music majors lol. Wanted to meet different kinds of people. I will never forget my insane freshman year roommate that 1) thought i would have a southern accent since i was from VA and 2) woke me up at 6 once to tell me about a saxophone concerto. She was a composition major 😵‍💫

EDIT: I meant this as I would likely get into heated argument(s) with them over their anti-science (and other) beliefs. I never have or will get physical with someone. I have been fortunate to not have any Trump supporters in my personal/work life, but either way I don't think a pet's care should be affected bc of other people's (misguided) political beliefs

In response to your edit, I did assume you meant initiating arguments (although the phrase 'on sight' is often used in a specific context with one additional word included) so everything I said still stands. You are by all means welcome to argue with everyone you see as long as you are okay with the consequences. Getting yourself into 'heated arguments' (and probably initiating them based on your choice of phrasing) would be seen as harassment/bullying and in theory, all schools have a no-tolerance policy for that. Someone wearing a shirt or slogan you disagree with is not inherently an issue.

And also, just another food for thought thing: You are not anonymous on here, whether you realize that or not idk. Saying the specific phrase 'it's on sight' would actually be a concerning thing to read from an applicant, or a classmate, even though you did not intend it to be taken as a physical threat. And I am not in any way saying that someone is going to go to schools now, or that schools are watching (although some very well could be). I'm just saying this wouldn't be the first time someone said something silly/in poor judgement whether online/elsewhere and it became an issue in their education or work life.
