I am living with my mom while in grad school. We had the final walkthrough of the house before moving tomorrow and I hate it. It has so much carpet, including in my room, which was not supposed to be the case. It was supposed to have 21 inch toilets and it doesn’t. My mom can’t get out of the sale of the current house or the purchase of this one even though my mom lost her job because the bank did her mortgage based on her pension income. It wasn’t a custom build and was just a new house. The developer went bankrupt halfway through the construction, which explains why the things we thought were going in based on the plans for the house ended up not going in. The problem is that my mom bought the house on that pretense. It was over her budget a little but she bought it anyway because she thought it was perfect. I feel like she got cheated and that really bothers me.

Apparently LMU is having a creator competition where they are asking students to essentially become “influencers” talking about the school, and the people who do the best get prizes.

Not sure what LMU campus it is, but that feels weird.
the competition is for LMU at large, not just the vet school. so the undergrad, the CVM, DO, dental, PA, all of it! not saying it’s an amazing thing, i also find it a little odd, but it seems to be pretty far removed from the people in charge of the CVM.

I'm pretty sure a lot of schools do social media stuff with students. IL is always posting videos of student interviews and doing student takeovers and stuff. There's an entire grad hourly job for someone to write articles about what students are doing and about their pets. Unless I'm missing something it's pretty normal in this day and age ?

yeah i just went and read the terms on it and honestly it seems fairly benign. no one is being told what to say or do, outside of an initial prompt. people do this anyway, honestly there are a lot of students who attend here who already make videos about it and from what i’ve seen it’s mostly been resonating with people who already want to do social media stuff and were gonna do it anyway. also the videos i have seen so far have been pretty earnest, granted i know a good chunk of these people as my peers and know they genuinely feel the way they are portraying online.

the state of like “vetfluencing” as a whole is a whooole other conversation. that’s where i do fall into feeling odd about it. i think social media presence should always be used with caution. a lot of care and thought should go into what you put out there, bc it’s out there forever. in general, i get a LOT of vet/student content on my feed and it’s been feeling pretty oversaturated and unoriginal. in general, people are just kind of playing whatever game the algorithm will reward them for and it just leads to people putting a high quantity of content out, without a whole lot of discernment behind it. which i dont love. but, like i said, the CVM didn’t decide to put this on and i don’t find it to be egregious that they want to promote people talking about the school.

ive seen way too many publicly owned animals, necropsies and questionable patient videos on my fyp and it’s always paired with a trending audio and an on-screen one-liner caption.

i think it can be really beneficial for non-vetmed people to see the process of someone going from pre vet to a veterinarian, but also for parents, friends, partners, family members to see the reality of what their person is going through, and that it is a universal experience. not to mention the transparency shown from a vet student TO pre vets who may feel unsure about this field, or their stats, etc. maybe that’s just me and how i view creating my own content.

Yes. There is nothing wrong with it.

I’m honestly kinda surprised the schools are so okay with students posting whatever they feel like when corporate America is so against it. I mean I know it’s a different demographic but we’ve basically been told not to mention work on social media ever and I KNOW that we’d have to go through seven levels of hell approval to ever consider something like that at my company.

probably 80%+ of the stuff on my feed is AI posts from pages I don't even like/follow?

Yeah. I feel like I only use it for messenger to talk to @battie, @SkiOtter, and @pp9 lol

I mostly use it like a diary to post dog show results and house build updates, haha. I really dislike that they show you things from pages/people you don’t follow and random groups. And God forbid you show too much interest in one topic and then that topic takes over your feed for the next several days.
For some reason I keep being shown children’s books with covers that are extremely obviously AI generated (the kids have four fingers, etc…). As if that isn’t bad enough half of them are admittedly AI WRITTEN as well. At that point you are 0% the author?

The comments are usually pretty funny though ngl

omg!! is this just some policy they have set or did something happen?
It just our grading scheme that MSU changed this year. An A is being a day 1 ready vet, followed by a B being able to do with some supervision, and a C being needing step by step instruction.

So they basically graded me saying I need supervision or instructions to do basic clinical skills like an otoscopic exam, or a physical exam for example.

It’s very frustrating because primary care here is the worst rotation by reputation at MSU. I did better in some of the hardest rotations by significant margins

Graded clinics sound awful tbh I’m sorry

No feedback was ever given verbally or written the entire rotation so I have nothing to go on.

It’s passing, it just sucks when I submit internship applications in a month.

This is the biggest issue. The grade doesn't mean anything if you have no guidance. At least if you get an A or an F, you know solidly that you're good or you're not. A C is the weird grey area where you don't know what you don't know.

An actual evaluation should be a requirement

this sounds like a recurrent issue at MSU - if this is happening to everyone, it's worth bringing it to someone's attention. You cannot expect someone to learn and improve without constructive criticism and guidance, it's part of teaching

Our class has been trying to bring it to the attention of administrators but they just keep ignoring it. I’ve sent an email, and talked to others at this particular location who had similar things happen to them

Seen on the APVMA page: 'Everyone I know wants to be a large animal vet, but they are forced into small animal medicine because there aren't enough large animal programs at vet schools. That's why there is a large animal vet shortage.'

That's a new take on it, that's for sure...

ETA: Context was that it's outrageous that there's a "veterinarian shortage" but these darn schools just won't increase classes sizes so all of the poor prevets with crushed dreams can can admitted

ETA x2: And yes of course I got involved lol. I just don't understand where the lack of understanding of the profession you are trying to enter stems from. maybe someone can enlighten me. I just can't imagine trying to enter a field that I know literally nothing about. I was a stubborn prevet too but I feel like I was at least getting a field for employability, salaries, etc. back then?

“no large animal programs at schools”…. HUH? pardon? what do they even mean by that?

Well, the apartment saga continues. August first I checked to make sure they didn’t charge me for any bull****, and they did. For building utilities (water/sewage) but also for renters insurance….when I did not live there. Called them Monday, they said they’d get it fixed the next day. They didn’t. Called back today, said they’d get it done. And now I see an extra $700 charge??? Hell no. I ain’t paying anything. If I truly have to pay a little for water/sewage etc fine, but I already paid July’s prorated rent. And I had renters insurance until my move out date, so no I will not be paying a fee for not having valid renters insurance.

I hate these people and this means I’ll have to talk to dumb **** McGee the manager again tomorrow

Lmao. *laughs in rural med* 😂

How do y'all do GP on a efficient level? I was doing so good for so long today and then got derailed and never back on the tracks 😭
Always happy to talk. Leveraging staff is 100% the way if at all possible. Sometimes you fall off the tracks but if everyone is done by around close I call it a win...i might not be done with records but yeah. Was a little bit or relearning to ride when I came back from maternity leave

I am the problem. I like to talk to people, so I am naturally a great and terrible fit all in one go.

There's also an issue with the front staff as far as training goes. I had an appt that should have been a tech appt. which was in all caps in the chart. Should not have been scheduled with me. But also, I need to be better about time. I'm getting my watch fixed

At least youre self aware. Our staff has to pull my boss out of rooms consistently. He is squirrel bad plus everyone "knows him"

This is so funny because programs actively seek out large animal students. But many of them switch to small animal during school bc money.

I find it's becoming way more common for people to post now about their veterinary / school life under their real names. The only thing most people who have me on social media know is that I'm a vet student and a zookeeper, with the only details being some pictures of me working with the animals. Nothing with the potential to be controversial ever appears under my real name. I worry about protecting my personal reptuation as a doctor. I know the vast majority of students participating in these programs would never post anything damaging but with the internet the way it is you never know how it could go awry. Especially with the sensitive nature of the profession, even if you just make vet posts eventually there's bound to be some quarrels. But of course YMMV.

I once made a post to just close followers about handraising a baby otter, before it went on public display at my zoo. I had him for 6 weeks and he was growing strong and healthy so I figured I could give a little sneak peek. He unfortunately passed away a few days later and then I had to re-explain the way he died in my arms over and over to people who were interested in updates because I'd made the post. And because they weren't vet people they didn't really get my grief. That kind of turned me off from wanting to cross my personal and work lives on social media anymore.

Why is it ALWAYS there's not enough seats I'm so tired of telling people we need to fix the culture and compensation in large and rural medicine. It's nearly impossible to recruit an urban or suburbanite to work long shift work with constant on-call and driving requirements in the middle of nowhere, it's difficult enough to recruit us rural people back. I had this argument with 2 people earlier on the page and just eventually gave up because they couldn't get past me saying it's a "culture" issue and kept claiming it's a purely economic problem. No brother, I'm sure there are many people who love cows as much as I do but they cannot physically and mentally handle the toll it takes on you!!!

Ok but for real this is a huge issue thats not talked about enough is the physical aspect. Like i watched my mentor grunt and groan when hed get yanked around by a cow butnuntil you start to experience the physical down fall nothing can really compare you for it imo. Im 30 and after I got pregnant my body decided to start falling apart. I was doing quite a bit of large animal. When I blew my acl I stopped alot of LA apts for about 6mo while working to get sx rehab etc-literally for saftey reasons i was not doing LA. It was alot more physically demanding going back this spring to dystocia season. Then I messed my back up a few months ago and in talking to my dr like its going to be a serious issue long term. My boss has back problems (mid 40s) and I never truly understood. Now when he says no LA I get it. Part of me is sad at the prospect of physically being taken out of the LA game but the other part of me knows I need to try and take care of my body long term for my kids and health otherwise. Thankfully my associate loves the LA so weve been punting most of it her way but yeah...i was gung ho for LA going into/during and just out of school. Now between the $ and physicality SA only work is a not so bad prospect some days...

Mentally thats a different story too that I wont get into now but let's just say there's a shelter med position posted back in my home town and I very unseriously told my husband and pm about. A fleeting moment if you will

We live on a creek so every day esp in summer months, i am kissed (jabbed) by mosquitoes. Why can’t I live somewhere where there are fireflies instead? Ugh. lol.

Also, visiting WV (my Alma mater) this last spring brought up some beautiful memories of fireflies while enjoying a brewery in the countryside, and it was a nostalgia that warmed my soul.

I do love the fireflies down here in WV. We have plenty of mosquitos too though; I can't even step onto my back porch in the summer without getting bit 🥲

My best friend recently went regulatory/USDA after doing like true 50/50 large/small rural mixed practice for 10 years. Multiple factors went into her choice like stability, retirement and benefits, etc. but “I don’t want to be having to palpate cows in 20 more years” because of the physical aspect was definitely also a factor even though cows were her preferred patients.

We get a taste of it in zoo and I can't really imagine doing that level of work all day, every day. We make a joke about 'pre-gaming' our field procedures with ibuprofen but it's really because we need it. And often, our animals are anesthetized so it's not even the same level of risk.
