Light update #2: both the remaining lights were still showing delayed with no estimated fulfillment date. So on Saturday I found another Chinese seller on Amazon and ordered two more. Then the next morning the original order finally updated and says delivery by Sept 7. So I cancelled the newer order so that I didn’t suddenly have five lights. Original light #2 shipped via UPS yesterday and will supposedly arrive tomorrow. #3 finally shipped today via FedEx and will maybe come Thursday. We shall see. I’m more hopeful now than I was on Saturday haha.
this sounds like a nightmare tbhbeing the first class in a brand new curriculum is so rough

Not really a rant but just a laugh. Despite my decade of experience in leadership, management, and communications, I scored the literal lowest score on a SJT for this year. Only one school is judging my score, fortunately. I spoke with the school about it too. Am I going to pay another $100 to take it again? LOL. I don’t think it’s worth it. It’s an experiment anyway, as it’s the first time they’re leveraging it. 😂 I hope they’d be able to make a sound judgement of me based on in person interactions and my application packet as a whole. Anyone who scored low on a SJT, I am standing in solidarity with you 🤣 I’m also wondering if it would’ve been different if it wasn’t human medicine questions…and the questions were veterinary medicine related..hmm
Grief is hitting me again today. Last night as I was putting my other bird to bed after finishing watching the football game, I had the thought i should have been putting my baby back inside the cage for bed after he would have undoubtably climbed to the top to run around and need rescuing. Then today I decided to revive my sourdough starter, and using my simple kitchen scale to weigh out flour has now brought me to tears since it was the scale I used to weigh him so often. I thought I had closure but I miss him so much. I wish there were a way to turn back time and never have brought him in.
Airbnb has been so good for my externships until today. Pulled up to the place: couldn’t find the lockbox to get in. Cigarettes everywhere. Unkept front yard, and an undisclosed relative there. Plus the driveway was completely blocked.
Vibes were off. Left and found a cheap extended stay. Now I have to fight with Airbnb to get some money back.
The host is going to fight, but they straight up had no communication with me since January. No check in instructions or saying hi.

I never realized chewy is such a shady company…
Also did anyone see their new (totally unbalanced) fresh food?
Also did anyone see their new (totally unbalanced) fresh food?
1. Chewy was relentless on LinkedIn trying to get me to the level of annoying. They are manned primarily by expensive relief doctors right now.
2. They opened right around the corner to similar corps such as GoodVets and Sploot here in Denver. Those three corps are literally visible to one another like a corporate triangle of doom.
3. One of the independent clinics she showed a chewy opening near is actually my new sister hospital. I can thankfully report we're doing great *because* we're privately owned.

Vets who have been practicing for a minute, do you ever feel like you know things? Because today on an externship, I got really frustrated with myself for not remembering answers to questions I was being asked. My boyfriend said I’m still a student so it’s fine. But I’m starting to truly doubt myself

You'll get to competent and then get good at just dipping into more knowledge as needed for specific cases or fun. Don't worry.

I forget things all the time! It's totes fine!
There are very few things you don’t have time to look up. And about the time you start to remember stuff, new drugs will come out, new procedures with crazy acronyms will be out, and they’ll change bacteria nomenclature like three times.

Been there! I don't find that kind of grilling the most effective teaching tactic. But people still do it...my advice is, take a breath, say what comes to your mind (I often would hold back on my thoughts because I didn't want to be wrong, and it would turn out I actually knew the thing) and if you really don't know, just say you don't know. It is fine. All of have things we don't know, all the time. Often when you're being asked things this way, the goal is just to gauge your knowledge base and see where gaps are that the doctor can then help you fill.Vets who have been practicing for a minute, do you ever feel like you know things? If it helps, I'm a third year resident, have been a doctor for six years, still don't generally do well with answering questions on the spot if it's not something I've deeply studied for a case. Like others said, there's almost always time to look up facts, specific treatments, etc and often it's even ideal to do that if you can since new stuff comes around all the time. The thing you really need to learn is how to think about cases critically, and building your diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills.

You use SSD diluted in water for ears? 👀 What hippie mumbo jumbo shenanigans is this?!
Hahaha we were taught this by Derm to use for pseudomonas, especially if the ear drum is compromised, because it’s not ototoxic and works very well. You use SSD diluted in water for ears? 👀 What hippie mumbo jumbo shenanigans is this?!
Went to cancel spectrum because service had been garbage and they just hiked our rate again and 120/mo is a silly amount to be paying dor wifi. Of course they try to keep you but mind you the whole town has been complaining about the service and outages. The rep my husband was on the phone with like physically could not comprehend the problem being a regional issue and kept trying to blame it on "old" equipment because our equipment is over 3 years old. 🙄

I was told by my electrician to call the internet company to let them come run the fiber line through my house while the walls were open and drywall wasn’t put up. Customer support said they don’t do that. Umm, okay; maybe you don’t usually do that, but how often are you doing new construction homes? He kept saying it would take 8 weeks for engineering to plan the line to my house and then they’d come lay the line inside, and he wasn’t comprehending that I was wanting them to come do part 2 in the house first while it was easy and then hook to the actual line later. Like, I’m 10000% sure your install guys would prefer to install it when it’s easy and the walls are open and they don’t have to wade through insulation. The customer service rep said he’d make some emails and call me back, still waiting on that return call and it’s been months now. My parents talked to the local tech who goes to their church and he said yeah he’d do it. Then he was supposed to call me about it and he never did either. But okay, if y’all want to do it the hard way in several months when the walls are up and there’s insulation and all that, we can do that even though it was dumb you didn’t come out now. Like I would have signed a contract now. But whatever. My electrician did lay conduit so they could pass their line under the sidewalks and into the attic and into the right wall, so we did what we could to make it easier for them even if they wanted to make it harder for themselves.
4 weeks into vet school... I am two thousand miles away from my friends, am developing a mysterious illness that gives me nausea and aura almost every day; I have to drive all the way to Pennsylvania to see a neurologist (luckily the gastroenterologist is only 45 minutes away); I have no idea how I did on my first exam; my oven is broken and my heater is broken and my roof needs repair and we have no time to meet the repair people, and I just found out I can't go to my best friend's wedding because I can't take an exam a day late even though I asked four months in advance. I feel lonely and I am sick all of the time. So there's my first rant in a while; I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way.
OH and we got to test out our student discount for the first time because our dog got attacked by our neighbor's dog
I feel like this is worth fighting. It’s a once in a lifetime event (hopefully) vs a once weekly event (exams in vet school suck). But that’s just my take, and I have a lot of fight-the-system energyI just found out I can't go to my best friend's wedding because I can't take an exam a day late even though I asked four months in advance.
I would offer to take it early, they are usually more receptive to that bc they often hold grades if not all students take the exam.I just found out I can't go to my best friend's wedding because I can't take an exam a day late even though I asked four months in advance.
When it rains it pours, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I hope they are able to find a solution for your illness. The adjustment to first year is so rough, but I believe in you! I know the end feels impossibly far away right now, but you will make it there and become an amazing doctor.4 weeks into vet school... Test for CO2, CO, Radon, Lead, etc. esp since your oven and heater aren’t working. Are you guys doing anatomy lab with formalin etc maybe that’s contributing too. Hope it gets figured out. I agree, I think in general taking it early goes over better than taking it late. Doesn’t affect grades as much and I also feel like it’s considered a little less of a cheating risk if one person takes it early before leaving town vs you taking it after everyone else and lots more people could have told you what was on it.l or you overhear people talking about it. I’m in no way trying to suggest OP would ever cheat, just giving arguments I’ve heard.I would offer to take it early, they are usually more receptive to that bc they often hold grades if not all students take the exam.

I did offer to take it early 🙁 they said either early or late would be unfair to other students because they can’t offer it to everyone (and my disability justice pro-accommodations mind says, why can’t we?)
Thank you you guys are so sweet ❤️ the illness has been progressive — was a once or twice a month thing for the last two years or so, and now has been a five or six times a week thing, starting over the summer— so I’m inclined to think it’s not the house or anatomy. It is very possibly a sequelae of stress

I am so sorry all of this is happening. Maybe it’s migraine. It’s possible to get the nausea and aura parts of a migraine without the headache. I know I get migraines from stress.
That’s what I’m thinking. I’ve also had more true migraines— severe headache and nausea— in the last few months than I used to. That’s why I’m seeing a neurologist. I don’t even feel that stressed— but I guess I probably am anyway.I am so sorry all of this is happening. Maybe it’s migraine. Also agree with fighting it. Every school is different of course...UofI didn't like it when they had to accomodate life events but they did. And they always made the student take the exam early, so perhaps that would be something you could suggest. Something about it being easier to give one student a different exam (or maybe it wasn't even different?) early rather than have them take a different exam laterI feel like this is worth fighting. this vet is making me so upset. It’s one thing to quiz me. It’s another thing to belittle my education and say that you should go teach at my school because what are they teaching me. All because I couldn’t remember the two diagnostic test for EIA.
Like I get it. These diseases are important. I should know these things. But it’s not the end of the world for me to not know it right now.
I’m tired of being belittled. I’m tired of being treated like I’m stupid. I’m tired of going home crying every day.
I reach out to MSU and they’re just like ignore it or confront him if you feel comfortable. How about no.

I'm normally a very "confrontational" person in situations like this. The difference between me and you though is the power this individual has over your grade. Nah, it's inappropriate for them to expect a positive situation to occur if you say something. They definitely need to consider black listing this location from their away list

This summer has been god awful. A corporate clinic I did a summer student position dumped me like a bad ex: over email while I was on a vacation (that they knew about). They spent all summer sending me the requirements to be relief, then didn't even have the balls to meet with me on my last day to change their mind. They'd already approved me to work shifts into the semester but cancelled them. Come to find out today they kept a few of my classmates. I'm torn between being angry and being terribly anxious. If I did something that made them not want to keep me, then I really wish they would have met with me on or before my last day and told me. It was a student position and that felt like it would have been a great learning opportunity. I want to be successful, I want to be hirable and likable and able to be worked with. My last boss said I was never someone she had to worry about because she knew if she gave me feedback I would listen and do my best to implement it. Now I feel like I've ****ed up any opportunity to apply to any internship run by that corporation too.
I feel like I'm in the hell depths of school and cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel. Currently wrestling with the "did I just make the most expensive mistake of y life" train of thought, even though I know the answer is no. Cheers to year three, I guess.

I’m sorry you had to go through this!! You are special! You’re the only one like you! And your next opportunity will hopefully be better and a positive environment that doesn’t make you question your worth, likeness, or personality matching-ness. 💕 not every clinic will be a perfect match. I highly doubt this is the case. My guess is that they got payroll cut or the student position was cut. You'd be by far the easiest person to get rid of.
Don't hesitate to apply to those internships when you're ready.
I hate how many people tell me they have autism and then act weirded out by me when I do... things because of my autism. I know my body language is odd and does not translate properly to my thoughts because I have to do it manually (eye contact, smiling etc.), and that I constantly go on about stuff nobody cares about or say odd things because I can't read the conversation right. Telling me I should just act normal because you "can act normal when you need to" feels really annoying when I've lived visibly with this condition for 22 years. If you can perfectly blend as neurotypical into every social situation when needed, I think you can not understand what it is really like. I understand there are many possible presentations on the spectrum but it just sucks to have the "normal-passing" people, who's numbers have increased 10x in recent years, which now means my more obvious problems make me othered and weird even among the "autism community".
studying for my first exam and i feel like the dumbest person on the planet. psychiatrist let me know last week that she can say with complete confidence i have ADHD, and i have a full assessment at the end of the month...

One of my loans is being held hostage by the financial aid office because they're having so many problems dealing with all the BBB changes </3 I qualify for the legacy provisions and that's indicated on my account but I guess nobody is safe from the complications this bill is causing.
Each time I call there's a new, different problem that they claim is causing the holdup but nobody ever notified me about (or mentioned the past 3 times I've called). So frustrating 🙁 I'm trying my best to be patient and understanding with the individual people I've been speaking to over the phone but I'm getting really anxious because I need that loan money to survive.

Way to at least try. That's a scary surgery and you gave it a shot. That's all you can ask yourself
not here to throw a pity party because i should be happy i passed but man am i tired of just making it by. my gpa from undergrad was the production of health issues but those habits stuck with me and i am terrified they will follow me through vet school. i dont want to just pass and move on, but im not trying to be valedictorian top of the top either. i just want to do better than i did in undergrad, because i know i can. this is a score i've seen before, and one i'm all too familiar with, and i want to see better because i know i can do better. it's not that i don't understand the material, it's that for some reason, it does not fully stick.
i know now how i have to study, because everything that did fully stick with me for the exam, were things i could vomit up and draw on a whiteboard and explain. happy i passed, because me from 2022 would be so shocked to know we passed our first exam and decently so, but i know i can do better. hopefully that's enough to light a fire under my ass and keep me going, but for now i'm just a little bummed
