what? this is actually insane to me. we had semester long individual courses for immuno, bacteriology, virology, and parasitology. idk how it's possible for them to cram all that in??? granted we don't have a block system but i feel like that is simply not possible lol
you and me both, breezy

finally got the courage to reach out to (many) mental health professionals (including services offered by my school), only to a) be ghosted after 2 sessions b) put on a waitlist that extends into march c) don't even get a reply at all or d) finds a place but they don't take my insurance. i'm drowning. i made an appointment with a primary care physician to see if they can help me out in finding a place because i'm lost

also doesn't help being in a red state with limited mental health resources yipee

When I was in undergrad, we had one sports psych supporting alllll sports. mens and womens. hundreds of athletes. It was nearly impossible to get on her books. I was 2,000 miles from home, in a competitive division 1 sport, juggling relationships, responsibilities, stress, performance anxiety etc... needless to say, i took the opportunity to go to a local yoga studio away from campus, with regular people, some spouses of professors at the college, others unaffiliated with the college... it was precious! It was my zen time. I used to HATE yoga as a teen because I thought it was about performance... but in college, it was such an amazing time for me. I would go 1-2 times per week for either yin (deep stretching and mindfulness) or a more active vinyasa/ashtanga situation... anyway, it was basically the therapy I needed because it helped me become in tune with myself, my feelings, and it really played a positive role in my senior year of college. It was my most consistent year yet and I wish I had prioritized "me" time sooner.

If I just blabbered nonsense, and you want clarity, DM me! LOL! <3

I don’t know if you’re just wanting to rant or seeking help. If you’re just wanting to rant, man do I feel you. The process is hard for someone who is functioning well and in an okay headspace. It can feel insurmountable if you’re not doing well, which is when you need it. If you want any advice/input, keep reading.

Depending on which category the school therapist falls into, ask if they can help find some external therapists. I am not the vet school's embedded counselor's biggest fan but she found my current therapist who I do love.

Ask the same of your primary care physician. The previous medical network I was in had a therapist/patient advocate whose entire job was to help find external therapists for patients. If they have less of a wait (which I doubt but is sometimes possible) try to get scheduled with a psychiatrist because they can definitely help you out.

Also, if you're able, utilize your insurance's "find a doctor" search if they have it. It really should be called "find a practitioner" because usually physical therapists, licensed social workers, and other professionals who aren't doctors are listed. I cross referenced with psychology today profiles to see who would be a good fit and who was taking new patients.

Also also, if you have a job, sometimes there is an employee advocate on staff who can help, but definitely be cautious and only reveal what is necessary to an employer.

I’m sorry this all sucks. This country is a nightmare.

Definitely feel you about it being hard enough to reach out for help and then having difficult finding said help, especially in a profession where we should have much better access to it given how much it's needed.

Additional possible resource if you are interested - Vets4Vets (also can use as a vet student), you can schedule a one on one phone call and they can help connect you with someone for longer term help: Vets4Vets – Veterinary Students - VIN Foundation

thanks all for the advice / support. i haven't looked much into Betterhelp because I've heard mixed reviews and I was trying to find an in person place, but if it comes to that I will check it out.

I always recommend Lifestance as another option. They accept a lot of insurances, and you can get in relatively quickly with a provider. My psychiatrist is through them.

I heard two things about vet school before I came into it- that it would take up all my time studying, and that people would be catty and cliquey. Thankfully, I’ve found only one of those to be true.
That being said,
I miss my friends from home sooo much and I wish social situations were easier for me.
Also, why lie about liking me? I only want to be friends with people when we can actually be friends.

Idk if it’s different in the horse world but a non-compete for an internship is literal insanity. That negates the whole purpose of the internship.
That’s my problem, it defeats the purpose. Like I wouldn’t be allowed to work in Lexington where a significant portion of racehorse are. Like it makes me not want to do it. They said they might waive it for a residency but even that’s not guaranteed.

I feel like if I take it, I’m essentially putting myself out of the industry I’ve been working towards going into.

Oh noooooo was this the outside of match offer you got? Did they give you a deadline to accept? That’s such a crappy position to be in.

Non competes for internships are stupid. What do you mean I can’t work locally after completing the internship? That excludes an entire racetrack
I’m not equine so my opinion probably doens’t matter much, but I would not sign that, especially for an early out of match offer. If you’re competitive enough to be getting an offer now you’ll likely be able to get another offer that doesn’t restrict you out of your chosen area.

Out of match offer. They gave me until the 10th to accept, then said because I’m externing with them they’d extend it until the 27th. But they may require an earlier decision.

I’d like to do an internship, but I’m not 100% sold on doing one.

Ditto this

babymcat got bit at daycare. I am seething.
IMG_1431.jpeg

THREE TIMES!!!

Speaking of daycare 'things' pp9 jr is on her second cold and ear infection this month. Which means husband and I are on our second colds of the month too. Except the order is pp9 jr -> husband -> myself. So I spent the first two weeks taking care of a sick baby, then a sick husband, and then once I feel sufficiently overextended, I get sick myself. yay!

I'm going to vote. I'm a big believer in voting. Voting is your civic duty. If I get one more text message, mailer, or voicemail telling me to vote, I'm going to explode. Two text messages in two days from Ice-T is two too many.
This, but also, I am so sick of the ads that are borderline or outright libel about the other person, or just slamming their opponent. Tell me what you are going to do if you're in office and how you're going to do it.

Big on this. I’m so sick of the ads where one side is saying hey this guy has documented bribery charges and the other is THIS MAN WILL FORCIBLY TRANSGENDER YOUR KIDS

Like bruh let it be over. I hate politics, I hate the people involved with them lol

Also, trunk or treat has ruined Halloween. Tell me how I live in a neighborhood In a house for the first time in my adult life and there are NO TRICK OR TREATERS

Like damn glad I got stuff I’d eat but jeez. It’s so depressing it is the absolute perfect weather so where is everyone??

You could try negotiating the radius down, or I would be looking for wording just to see if it can basically just say you won’t solicit their clients. Unfortunately Kentucky is notorious for having their practices have really aggressive noncompete. The hospitals have them for the entire state. I’ll be happy to take a look at it if that would be helpful!

I've been calling trunk or treat the AI version of trick or treating. It's for people who care only about the end goal of having lots of candy and not the experience of exploring dark roads with friends, judging the best decorations, mapping out the best routes in your neighbourhood to maximise full-sized bar collection, etc. It lacks any of the spirit of Halloween.

idk how other schools do a block system, but i feel like trying to learn all of immunology in two weeks, plus parasitology and virology and bacteriology alongside it is just....impossible? immunology is only for the first two weeks of the block and then the other two after the first exam are mostly parasitology, virology and bacteriology.

welp. it was a fun 10 weeks of vet school, there is no way this is gonna go well for me :bag:
This sounds completely insane to be honest. We had full term, separate classes for immunology & parasitology in 1st year, bacteriology & virology in second year (plus, we had a separate pathology class in every semester). So each subject had ~16 weeks of dedicated instruction. And I still felt those were some of the most intense classes. I can't imagine cramming it all in in such a short time leaves you with any long-term knowledge of the subjects??

i ended up passing (and almost got a B?...) but that exam was rough for so many reasons, and was curved to oblivion

I have had to look for mental health support recently and one of the things that I did was use pyschologytoday.com to filter therapists that work in my state. A lot of them are online or in person and they usually state what insurances they take. I had a unique situation where I needed a therapist who was licensed in two separate random states and I was able to find a great one! Maybe that will be a good way to find a lot of options that can meet the needs you have.

I’m still upset.

Once? Ok it happens. 3 times!!!!!!!!
Was it the same kid each time? I mean I know our kids are still super little and don't understand their actions yet, but if the same kid was given a chance 3 times I'd wonder why your daycare wasn't separating that kid out more after the second bite. But I also am not a daycare provider and know they can only do so much....

As the mom of both a biter and 2 bitees/bite receivers? just know its developmentally normal and appropriate and while it sucks for you and your bub just know it also sucks from the other side.
Yes it was the same kid each time and it was only after the third time they did anything. Which is why I’m upset. I’m not upset at the other child.

We're doing canine neuro right now, which is being delivered by teams meeting synchronously during the class (as the professor is from out west). There are so many videos we need to watch for gait and reflexes and stuff and the video buffering is actually killing me. I have no idea what limbs the dog has paresis in when it's only 6fps lol.

I applied to a fellowship outside of match. I sent everything in before the deadline on Monday but never got a reply/confirmation that they received everything, nor have I gotten an automated message that they opened my online transcript. At what point should I be panicking that my entire application is in spam? 😅

Little mini health rant

Kinda sucks that since starting school my body has gone into fight or flight mode and is never rested anymore and has decided to shed all my hair

Every morning I wake up and my watch tells me I’m dying (non restorative sleep, body battery 50%, HRV <20 lol) and my hair has starting falling out a tonnnnnn and I’m lowkey worried I’m gonna be bald since I already have fine hair lol. On some new meds from a dermatologist but like damn can my old bag of bones get with the program please and get its **** together so I don’t have to worry about my health while studying haha

Two weeks prior to selection of winter semester electives they informed us that the ONLY wildlife, zoo, and exotics professor is on sabbatical so none of those courses will be offered to our year. They were offered to the year above and will be offered to the year below. I came to vet school with a background of 95% wildlife / zoo with the intent to continue heavily pursuing wildlife / zoo as a serious endeavor. How are you going to pull the rug out from under me with two weeks to go after 2.5 years? They told me I should try taking some webinars online and that I can take the 4th year rotation with the professor next year when she returns from sabbatical. However, the 4th year rotation, is primarily focused around GOING TO MY WORKPLACE WHERE I HAVE 1400+ HOURS EXPERIENCE. So it's not like it will even be particularly enriching... I'm so beyond upset. Wildlife conservation is my life's passion and you are going to tell me you're going to offer me no training. I feel lied to... had they told me this when I was applying to vet school I genuinely may have tried to tap into my bilingualism and history of living in Quebec as a kid to pursue going to U de Montreal. How am I supposed to become a zoo veterinarian when you offer me no opportunity for classes and training? Not to mention how am I supposed to learn the exotics content for the NAVLE? They keep acting like it's a minor inconvenience that people won't get to take these "fun electives" and ignoring me and others trying to say that this is seriously damaging to our education. If the equine professors were on sabbatical they would replace them, they wouldn't tell all the future equine docs to suck it up and just take horse webinars to replace these skills. So because I'm in wildlife I get to be screwed over? I don't know how to keep escalating this but I feel like I can't just sit down and accept that they aren't going to train me in the thing I came to vet school for.

Any chance you could contact other schools and see if you can remotely audit their zoo/wildlife classes? Might be worth a shot.
