Picked out my lectures, wet labs, clinical conferences and tours I want to do for the SCVMA Symposium at FVM in January. I'm stoked now! Just hope I get in the wet labs and tours I want.

Wait, where did you do that? I heard they were sending out a preregistration email, but I haven't gotten anything yet.

You can view the selections on the link that they sent to our emails. We can't register until the 26th. By picked out I mean not officially register. Sorry for the confusion.

I originally posted in the Rant Thread, but it has turned into a Rave! My grandfather safely made it through surgery and is recovering quietly in his room. Praying for an uneventful night, since he's still not out of the woods, yet. I can sleep a little easier tonight knowing he's OK and in good hands. Thank you, modern medicine.

Yippie!!

I have officially finished my second day as an Emergency Vet Assistant! And I LOVE IT! 🙂

It is freaking cold outside....

But it just makes my Tim Horton's chili taste that much better! 😍

We finally have snow! A dusting, but it's going to stick around this time. I just had homemade chili from the neighbors. 😍

Surgery class is OVER, can I get a hallejuah?

Also, got an encouraging email back from a lab animal rotation place. Starting to feel nervous about getting all my applications in for externals and having fourth year be like, a real thing, but I feel a lot more positive about it than I did a month or so ago.

I've been talking with my brother about my computer problems(he's an IT guy) and mentioned to him about my screen always seeming to be dirty, even though I clean it all the time. He asked me if I ever clean the inside of the screen. Umm, what? I didn't know you could or had to do that. He said the companies purposely don't give instructions for this, so that you take the computer into the repair shop and they charge you for it(apparently they make a percentage off of it). But, being the nice brother he is, he gave me the only website that has the instructions made public. I just finished doing mine and it looks amazing. Thank you brother!

Here are the instructions! They are super easy and don't ruin any warranty you have! :heckyeah:

Successfully defended my honors thesis this week and got an interview invite the same day 🙂 Now I am basically done until finals, and then I will be a college graduate. Scary.

I have a rave!

So, in my History of Math class, we had to do final presentations. I chose to present on the history of statistics.

Well, the next class meeting, the girl who didn't show up last time was lumped into my group. She was talking about how she really wanted to present on this mathematician because she felt like they were after her own heart. She was saying they were like soul sisters, that the mathematician was an emergent female when the business was all guys, all this other stuff. I let her do that, and I offered my e-mail address to her, to which she tartly said, "I'll pull it up on the website if I need it."

I decided to start making a basic outline of what I was going to do that evening. I figured that I was going to make my presentation as if it was going first, and framed it in such a way that it would connect with hers. Well, I looked up the mathematician. He's a man.

I thought for a moment I was getting punked. But since she was so abrasive about taking my e-mail address, I figured that she wouldn't take it very well for me to correct her. So, I waited until she looked him up. That day never came. I tried to keep her posted(and hint at looking up the guy that she was calling a woman) by telling her what things I'm looking through, and all that good stuff. She sort of blew me off every time, or started talking to someone else while I was trying to tell her what I was doing.

Eventually, it became the night before the presentation and she sends me an e-mail asking what I'm doing. And so I told her that I was going to have an overview on statistics and that the PPT was going to Segway into hers on that mathematician.

She sends me an e-mail at 11:47 PM that she changed her person. I was already asleep and didn't see it until I got up.

So I'm scrambling, and had to redo the entirety of the presentation due to some compatibility issues with the software, and eventually had a decent looking presentation.

I skate into class, barely on time, and she decides to go first. That's fine.

I'm sitting there as I notice there's a proof on the white board for a thing the other guy did in geometry. I shook it off as simple factoids until I realized that she didn't have his contribution for statistics.

Apparently the professor noticed it too, because he burns her on the spot, saying "The info's fine, but what is this guy's contribution to statistics?"
She immediately replies, "Anything I don't got, Conflag has."

I was livid but took it calmly. I put in my flash drive, and gave my presentation. I had the guy's contribution in there anyway because it was that significant.

The professor then told me he was going to recommend me to present my PPT at a symposium that the university holds. He told me to make my presentation a lot longer, and was offering his time to look through it as time went on. Obviously I accepted.

I'll be the youngest presenter, since I'm a traditional sophomore. I'm super stoked and I'm glad that handling that tactfully paid off in the end.

Sooooo happy about not having any finals 🙂

Seriously, I would rather study for boards 5 times over studying for one round of finals (UG or vet school).

I'm dying

Got a student rep position I applied for despite what I thought was a horrible interview.

Finished my term paper and presentation with plenty of time leftover tonight! I'm pretty proud of my work--hopefully my professor likes it too! Just one final next week and then I am done with my first doctoral semester! Whoo!

Could have died today... But didn't.

Very happy to be alive and not currently part of a news story about a vet student and her two dogs being burned to a crisp in an explosion.

Spent the last 3 hours decorating my mom's house with Christmas goodness. Now eating warm pumpkin pie with whipped cream, watching cheezy Christmas movies and working on a lovely Christmas puzzle. I love this time of the year and I'm feeling very blessed. Something I definitely needed.

Wednesday night I got a little tipsy (okay, okay, a lot tipsy. There was liquor involved. And wine. and then more liquor. ) and did some therapeutic online shopping.

This morning I realized that two of the items I had ordered were currently on sale for black Friday. And Amazon honored the lower prices by refunding my credit card! Saved me almost $100!

Had a positively fabulous study break. The sky was so clear tonight. I could SEE the Milky Way. Went out just to look at it, and snapped some pictures as well. I had to cut it short because I completely lost feeling in my hands...sooo cold. I'm not overly thrilled with how my shots turned out so I've been looking up how to photograph the night sky. Guess it's not really a break if you don't go back to studying huh? 🙂

After my first IKEA hack litter box cover/vessel/whatever turned out as a failure, I finally made my way back to TX and found something else to try that hopefully will work out much, much better. I have hope.

How fancy are you trying to go? I found a storage bench and just cut a hole in the side and laid down some matting inside. It's right by the front door of the house and no one ever notices until the cats start crawling in.

Well, I initially had this:
ikeabox1.jpg

But with a red sliding door and different feet. It was great because their food and water went on top of it and it looked nice. Here is what went wrong...

- male cat decided that squatting to pee is for losers and just peed wherever. So it would go over the sides of the (quite tall) box and sometimes out the opening.
- dog decided to make it her personal buffet. We attempted to end this by ordering a second door, putting it over the other half, and making another hole on the far end so that they had to crawl through two openings to get in. That kept her our for a few months but then she figured out that (with an unimaginable amount of effort) she would still fit through to get to the 'snacks.'
- combine these two problems and you have a dog occasionally getting her chest and feet in cat pee.
- and she would take the 'snacks' in to the living room rug to eat them - cue crumbly cat poo bits on the rug.
- the litter box is covered with pee and it's hard to get out and you don't want to set it on the floor so... we don't change it as often as we should and it's so hard to scoop that it's made us into bad kitty owners.

SO... we wanted something easy to scoop that the dog had no chance of getting to.

So we got this:

stuva-storage-bench__0139763_PE299595_S4.JPG

It is a bench with a 'drawer' that pulls out, but the drawer is actually on casters so it rolls on the floor and doesn't attach to the bench, it just fits under it neatly. Like this:

Haha - yeah, it was intended to be kid's furniture. Hey, whatever works!

So we cut a hole in the TOP and put a litter box down in the drawer part, and to scoop it, you just roll it right out.

We really hope this works out.

Here is someone's way fancier looking version:

Yeah, I'm not that good with a jigsaw. Plus lord knows the dog would manage to get into that one, too.

We just made an elevated litter box that has narrow stairs for the cat to climb to get to the box. Had to get it away from the IBD dog who has uncontrollable appetite due to seizure meds! It has worked out well so far. It is not enclosed which it seems you want to do, but it is pretty cool. Made it on the side of a closet.

We do want it enclosed since it's in our kitchen/dining area. We only have about 1,300 square feet and we don't want pooping in our bedroom while we sleep. Our offices are both full of stuff (I have the smaller room and a chair, and he has so much network equipment that I won't go into it) and the bathroom and laundry room are both too small. So there's the living room and the kitchen area, neither of which I want to have an open box in.

Hopefully the new one will work out better. My two cats are both males and they think squatting is for lame-o's too. I got a high sided litter box but the top and bottom are separate pieces so they still pee through the crack. Duck tape has solved that problem for the time being, but it's not ideal.

Back when I had a non-squatter, I had to use plastic storage tubs. Sides were higher than the cat. Cut a chunk out of one side and line the edges with foam pipe insulation(they were sharp).

I think that's what I'm doing next. It's been really hard to get a high sided litter box that fits in my trunk because it's only 15" wide.

Made a perfect score on my ridiculously huge project that was worth 50% of my grade...Hello "A!" I can definitely relax now and stop worrying about if I was going to fail the course or not.

Professor just emailed the class today and our final is online today! 😱 WTF I'll take it!
I also turned in an application for a vet tech position at a local clinic yesterday afternoon and got a call back THIS MORNING asking for an interview! :xf:

This might seem odd to start off a rave with, but, here it goes....

My cousin passed away back in early October from an asthma attack. Yesterday my aunt received a letter from a donor service group informing her that my cousin was able to donate his left kidney to a retired Vietnam Vet with four children and his right kidney to man with two children who had been on the waiting list for 3 years. Even though it is horribly sad that my cousin is no longer with us, it is absolutely amazing that he was able to save the lives of two other people. That is a happy ending. 🙂

Your cousin and his family are amazing for doing that. Organ donation is such a miraculous thing.

From an asthma attack?? Omg that is awful!! I have very bad asthma but never imagined it could take a life. I'm very sorry for your loss but that is an amazing happy ending for those families!

3 final exam study guides finished in the last 12 hours, i feel very accomplished! now if only i could remember everything they contain... 😉 [next up orthopedics, ophtho, radiology]

A class mate of mine died in high school of an asthma attack (that occurred at a school play rehearsal). I think she ignored the signs and didn't go for her inhaler until it was too late. I don't know how common it is, but it happens, and every one in my school, especially the coaches with asthmatics on their teams, were much more vigilant of the warnings of an attack.

On the other hand, I'm glad they were able to honor your family's wish and use his organs to help others-something good from the bad.

I felt the same way when we received the organ donation letter after my father died. It was nothing so dramatic as kidney donations, but even knowing that they were able to use some tissue grafts to help others was some comfort to us.

I woke up to an email saying that I have been nominated by two of my professors to receive a medal that recognizes the outstanding December graduate in the program my major is in :soexcited:

I interviewed and got a job offer as a vet tech from when I graduate in a week until I (hopefully) leave for vet school in the fall!! 😀

shadowed a new vet at a local clinic today…
little did I know he's specializes in orthopedic surgery.. was a pretty cool day and saw some really interesting things!
To top it off, he is a golf enthusiast and asked me to play with him this weekend… I think this may be a future letter of rec 😀

I've spent this whole week in a ferret medicine selective, which has been AMAZING. Tons of clinical, hands-on stuff, and so many ferret cuddles. Also, this little guy is coming home with me soon. 😀

And next week will be spent working with birds of prey... I'm pretty psyched.
