I got into OVC! I was so scared of the debt from going to school internationally and now I won't have to worry!!!

I wish I could like this more then once! I got in as well! Excited to be classmates in the fall!! Especially since none of my friends I applied with got in 🙁

Edit: Also @cbarne01 same goes for you!!!!

The doctors at the clinic I work at gave me a gift certificate to Allheart so I could get my own stethoscope! The certificate came in the mail, and our client coordinator was confused as to why I had even gotten any mail. But then the doctors came over to watch me open it so I knew something was up 🙂 I was planning to get them both something when I leave in August, but now I feel that nothing I give them will in any way be adequate in return for all they have done for me.

I am very, very glad I've been doing the ER work I'm doing so far. One of my "concerns" was ramping up as someone not doing an internship. Instead, I'm getting a full amazing real world caseload with typical ER variety and plenty of support when I've needed it. I've done multiple laceration repairs, finally placed a few drains, unblocked cats, my first linear fb (solo, that is), my first GDV, a couple nasty toxicity cases, a handful of not-nasty toxicity cases, an "arrested in the parking lot" case, some weird respiratory arrest case (that tried to die a few times before becoming completely normal all night and going home), a few refractory seizure cases..... And then the usual full load of vomiting this and that and euths and whatever. The other DVMs around have been great. Our technical staff is amazing.

Loving it.

I just found out I'm even closer to finishing my MPH than I thought! Turns out all the volunteering at free veterinary clinics for underserved communities that I've been doing counts as field experience credits and I've already got more than enough hours (I guess having the dual degree program director as your club's faculty advisor has its perks). Woohoo! Just have to finish this summer's part-time courseload, do a relatively low key master's project and presentation, and then wait around for awhile until fourth year so that I can take my very last transfer credit (my veterinary public health rotation). This is well-timed news, because for a moment there I was starting to regret embarking on this summer-sucking, elective course-monopolizing dual degree adventure.

Closing on the house tomorrow AM! Still hardcore stressing about this whole process.
Have everything just about packed and luckily my awesome clinic is giving me a couple extra afternoons off this week to deal with moving stuff. Can't wait to be done!

Me too, but at noon. 🙂

Hope yours went as smoothly as mine did!

Probably not - I don't think the people at the stillwater branch of my bank knew how to wire money... Lol. And there was an issue with some windows that we *think* the cleaners that the previous owner had come in had caused by trying to open them wrong...? Anyway, it's resolved for now. We should be moving in all the way this weekend.

Lots of exciting new things, including a couch that still probably isn't as comfortable as the red one was - lol. But most of all, the bed. The glorious bed. With the cooling pillows. It will be amazing.

Hope your move goes well!

Watching my technical staff deal with the onslaught of patients I had today made me pretty damn proud. Especially the 0.9kg parvo puppy they stuffed a multi-lumen central line into. Thank god for good technicians.

I stopped eating pork in vet school because I don't like how they're raised commercially. Recently, my husband and I found a local farm that produces (among other awesome stuff) free range, locally slaughtered pork. We brought some home one weekend and my parents tried it and we are all hooked. It is SO much more flavorful and tasty than store bought stuff. We also tried their free range, pasture-finished beef and it is equally awesome.

I got the job as a part time tech in a small animal ER that I've been wanting! So excited to start :soexcited:

Target had salt and pepper shakers in the shape of hedgehogs. Totally unnecessary impulse buy but my hedgehog collection is growing and remains super cute!

Monday I have an interview at the zoo in their records department and an appointment to look at a townhouse.

The job is temporary, but it may hold me over until one of my many other job applications goes through the various HR channels. Most of the jobs I've applied to are government related so I anticipate long many-month waits between application and possible interview (and then more waiting to get the paperwork in order before I would possibly start the position).

I really hope that I like this townhouse too. It's the cheapest one on my list with the most "wants" checked off. It's closer to my favorite shopping areas and a reasonable driving distance from OSU. If I don't like it, I hope the place I viewed on Thursday is still available come next weekend. That townhouse was nearly perfect - it even allowed pets- but it was at the top of my price range and a few miles too far north of my ideal location. I still have about 45 days to find a new place.

My first in patient went home today after being HBC last week (hospitalized for likely stress colitis + possible mild pancreatitis following anesthesia). She's a super sweet golden with very nice owners. They brought the clinician wine and us baked goods that were delicious. She then tried to see if I could be her dog walker but she lives in a different part of the city so it would be difficult with clinics, otherwise I totally would.

Got home early enough to take an unintentional 3 hour nap and get a quick workout in at the gym before being on call starting at 8 PM. I forgot that it closes at 8 as well on weekends during the summer and they start closing the different floors at like 7, so didn't get much done, but it was the first time I worked out in like 3 weeks, so it was nice.

So all in all, it was a good day.

Received a sponsorship to attend ExoticsCon! It'll be my first professional conference and I'm so excited! Can't wait until August!

Tomorrow I'm putting an application in for a townhouse. After seeing about half a dozen places around central Ohio of various sizes and prices, my mind just kept going back to the first townhouse I saw. It's at the upper end of my budget and much further north than I ever imagined myself living, but pets are allowed (landlord would not charge extra rent for my rabbit), it's metro park adjacent, it has a huge private patio that's fully enclosed, it has hard floors throughout the living area, first floor W/D hookup (no basement, which is what I prefer), and it's two minutes away from two major highway systems so everything I like to do around Columbus is 20 minutes or less away, including the vet school. I would also be about 20 to 30 minutes closer to my parent's home.

I just hope the landlord was being completely honest when he said that, given the information I provided him over the phone, I would be at the top of the list of applicants. I'm trying not to get too excited in case it doesn't work out, but finding a new place to live would significantly reduce my stress right now.

My new app. Best thing ever. You leave stuff out in your yard and attract stray cats who bring you sardines in return that you can use to buy even more stuff.

When I was a kid, I played "Virtual Kitty" (which upon Googling - still exists!) where you have a virtual cat and you can feed it and play with it and stuff. Totally awesome.

I'm in love with my new apartment. 😍 It's so much nicer than my old place, on a beautiful historic street, and it's over $100 cheaper in rent per month than what I was paying before. Not to mention I'm living with my boyfriend now, and it's going really well so far, especially compared to how bad things got with my passive aggressive old roommate.

It is so awesome!!!! I absolutely loved it and Chris Pratt is one of my top ranking celebrity crushes. I think it kind of annoys my boyfriend. lol.
I've also developed a crush on Chris Pratt, largely thanks to Jurassic World. It's kinda weird because I first saw him as Andy on Parks and Rec back when he was out of shape. My boyfriend just kinda goes with it because he loves Chris Pratt too. 😛 Ironically, his big celebrity crush is Aubrey Plaza, who played April (Andy's wife) on Parks and Rec.

My bf and I have been playing the Lego Jurassic World game 😀

First saw him in Guardians of the Galaxy and thought he was awesome. I ordered myself some Jurassic World gear this afternoon and cannot wait for it to come in.

I still subconsciously see him as Andy from Parks and Rec now and then and when I see him play other roles, I still expect him to say something the character Andy would say, so it surprises me when he doesn't. LOL

Saw Jurassic World the other day with my BF and really liked it 😀

I do too. I keep expecting him to stop and looked surprised or excited directly into the camera.

I'm happy that my housing search is officially over. I have a full month to move everything into the new townhouse before my current lease is up. So far my new property management company seems very accommodating- not only did they waive all pet fees for my rabbit but they put the work order in for the minor painting and maintenance right after I signed the lease. I'm excited to have a private outdoor space. I've never had that in any of my rentals to date.

my studio apartment is HUGE! move in was stressful but not too difficult, and i got a bunch of furniture for super super cheap. now all i need is a couch or futon and i will be all set! love the apartment complex too (the agency staff...eh.)

I have a working interview with a very large and well known regional specialty vet hospital in the near future. While I'm excited that they're interested, the position is in the neurology department and that's an area I have no experience in. Does anyone know of any good veterinary neurology resources online?

Tufts CVM had a good neurology resource page (student-oriented) when I was taking neuro and studying different cranial nerve deficits and such but I lost the bookmark when my desk top died and I have no idea if it's still around. FWIW, I can't imagine they will expect you to be familiar with the details of neurology at this point, so I wouldn't fret too much about reading up ahead of time.

As someone who volunteered in our CVM's neuro department, everything I learned was on the job. Handling, how to restrain for a neuro exam, how to differentiate one neuro deficit from another, functional order of loss (which I have copied in a notebook thrice over). I wouldn't worry about pre-training yourself. But I also think that if you read up a little on cranial nerves and the overall neuro exam that will give you a base to ask questions and learn while on the job.

This summer thing I'm doing, yeah it rocks 😀

First time ever placing a catheter in anything - nailed it in a cynomolgus macaque. First time intubating anything - again, success in a freaking 3.6 kg cyno.

Today was even better - I was there start to finish in a c-section for a baboon. I put in the IV catheter, intubated, and placed the urinary catheter (first time for that in anything), scrubbed in and assisted in surgery, and even helped close the subcutaneous and subcuticular layers.

Despite the fact that this fellowship has been a heck of a lot of work, with a crazy long commute, and I feel like I'm always tired, I can't help but be so grateful I'm here and getting to do all of these things 😀

I don't know why we aren't talking about this, but so happy to finally have marriage equality :biglove::biglove:
I've been raving about it so much everywhere else, I didn't think to say anything here 😀
