Volunteer awards thing for the therapeutic riding center I volunteer at were today. I got Volunteer of the Year and most hours for the year. Clearly I go there too much. But I feel special anyway.

Nice way to start off finals week. XD

Wow, I feel like we are slackin' over here in the middle states. Finals aren't for another two months! Good luck on your finals!:luck:

Yeah, quarter system. It goes by in about a second. But at least I get to start all new classes in two weeks. XD And thanks for the luck, I'll probably need it!

I'm going horseback riding with my boyfriend today and I got a call back from the equine vet I want to shadow. He agreed to let me start shadowing and I'll be starting next week! I haven't been around horses since I was 16 regularly so I'm really excited to get some more experience with them before vet school starts in the fall.

This may be a silly question but I'm tacking it onto this post...what do I wear to shadow this equine vet? He's ambulatory so I'll be riding around in his truck with him. Scrubs? Jeans? Sneakers? Muck boots??

When shadowing equine, I always used to wear jeans (or very sturdy Carhart khakis!) and a decent polo shirt and waterproof hiking-type boots. I had the Ariat Terrains which are awesome. You want to look professional, but you'll also probably get dirty. Some vets prefer scrub tops, or khakis instead of jeans, so it might be a good idea to ask!

Avoid sneakers. Something waterproof is your best bet, because barns and stables are mud magnets (among other things ). You do not want to be wearing sneakers if the horse you're working on decides to have a pee, or you've got a mare in heat that keeps squirting every 5 minutes. I'm like Whyevernot, I tend to go for jeans and a polo. Scrub top could be beneficial if you need the pockets though.

You REALLY don't want to be wearing sneakers if you are going to be working aroud sedated horses who are going to be staying on their feet (getting their teeth floated, getting their sheath cleaned). If a horse is sleepy and steps on your foot, he will not. get. off. Take it from someone who can no longer feel the top of her left foot (and I WAS wearing boots).

When I go with the equine vet I always wear jeans and a scrub top. For footwear I usually choose knee-high rubber muck boots. Mostly this is because the equine vet is really the large animal vet, and we spend a lot of time on dairies. The rubber muck boots are easy to rinse and sanitize upon leaving for biosecurity reasons. But you'd be amazed at some of the mud (and even manure on some poorly managed places) that you'll find this time of year at horse farms. So the rubber muck boots are always my first choice.

Also, no dangly jewlery, and I'd have your hair in a ponytail and/or pinned out of your face in some way. Bangs in your eyes make it super hard to stay aware of you surroundings, which is really important when working around horses.

But most of all-have FUN! Equine medicine is totally awesome 😍

I wore clean jeans (which never stayed that way), a nice shirt and my paddock boots. No sneakers, sweats/shorts, open toed shoes (obviously..) or tank tops. I think you probably know that already though. Have fun!

I'll give you just a bit of different advice from everyone else.

I'd ask the vet what to wear.

Don't forget that it's his business. He may have feelings one way or the other about how he'd like you to dress. He may not. But it's an easy question to ask and asking it shows that you're sensitive to being professional.

That said, if you really don't want to ask, I think everyone else gave you pretty solid advice.

Yay! I landed an interview for an internship I really want! :xf: I am pretty high on the waitlist for a vet school so I have been going with my plan B for the next year just in case! Plan B = apply for as many animal internships as possible to get as much animal/vet experience as possible in the next year.

I want to kiss my physiology professor - multiple choice renal physio exam (rather than the eleven page essay tests we've had for the rest of the semester) on Thursday! And then - Spring Break!!! 😀

Thanks for all of the replies about what to wear to shadow equine. I (naively) didn't realize some of those really obvious things! I'll give the vet a call this week to find out what he wants me to wear next week so I have time to buy stuff (I don't own any boots that fit any of those descriptions!).

Thanks again everyone!! 😀

My min pin had an FHO done today on his right femur. He had severe osteoarthritis secondary to a femoral head fracture and an acetabuar fracture. He is only 3 and was a rescue dog. But he is recovering well, and I can't wait for him to be able to be pain free!!!

Yay for petsky recoveries! My cat isn't recovering nearly as fast as I would like, and it's pretty difficult. I'm so glad your min pin is doing well 🙂

After contacting 3 companies about moving the cats overseas with me, I got one incredibly helpful, well-thought-out response from a person who seems to have both common sense and compassion.

Also I have a box of chocolates. 😀 (There needs to be a little smiley stuffing its face, with chocolate smeared all around its mouth. Because that's what I look like right now.)

I have my physics final tomorrow, and it's my last pre-req so I have to get a C in the class. In order to do that, I need a whopping 41.5% on the final. However, if I got a 100% on the final, I could pull an A out of my rear end. So that's kind of nice knowing there's not a lot of pressure, but there's also the chance to do really well!

That's always a good place to be at, rather than "oh crap, I have to ace this test to keep my A or I get a B." being on the cusp is always so annoying!

Rave: I ordered a new phone today! Set me back a few bucks and I had to renew my contract early, but I couldn't handle 6 more months with my phone always on the fritz. Yay for my new mytouch! Sometimes you gotta just splurge a little on yourself. I guess I can call it my gift to myself for getting into vet school. Plus I'm getting a pretty decent tax refund, which I guess could be another rave!

Speaking of Plan B, I cried for like 15 minutes and then started planning my life. So, instead of feeling sad, I feel relief and I'm getting pretty excited for next year. Decided to take some courses at a large university, which happens to be located where the boyfriend is and where my best friends are 😀

I'm giving vet school one last kick at the can before moving on. If they're going to reject me before looking at my supplementals, well, then there isn't much I can do outside of being stuck in an endless loop of undergrad courses. ~Two years from now, my pre-reqs start expiring. So if I don't get in, I'll have to re-take gen chem I & II, biology I & II, and english I & II. Then if I still don't get in, I have to retake genetics, physics, humanities, organic I and stats... and before I know it, I'll be earning the same degree I already have 🙄 Earning a masters only matters if I happen to raise my undergrad chemistry marks enough to get an interview 🙄 The system is flawed. Just have to accept it and move on!

RAVE: here, in France, if you make under a certain amount, the government gives you back a percentage of the rent you pay to help you out. Even if you are foreign, temporary worker like me!

My landlady that I lived with for the first 3 months of my time here went totally insane. Long story, but one of the things she did right after I moved out was try to lie to the CAF people saying that I had gone back to the US forever and not to give me any money (wtf).

Well, I woke up this morning to find...600 extra Euro in my bank account! Suck it crazy landlady, I got my money anyway and now I can go to Paris!!! 😀

I got the highest grade in the class on the hardest project of the quarter...AND I got an A in the class, when I totally thought I couldn't do it!!! :soexcited:

Another rave that I forgot to mention...

I presented a poster at a biology conference over the weekend. My labmate won Best Oral Presentation. It's the first time in ~30 years that someone from my university won this award. His picture is featured on the front page of the university website along with an article about the conference. The article mentions me and my poster! I was a little bummed that not many people stuck around to hear my presentation, but this makes up for it. I out 5 days of hard work into it so it feels nice to be recognized for it.

I'm finally starting to feel better, spring break is next week, and I don't have any work left to do this week, just classes. Oh, and my parents brought me some kolaches (not nearly as heavenly as the ones from Texas, but less awesome is still better than none!) from a little shop they found on their way home last weekend. So I have snacked on a kolache and have leftovers all ready for dinner. Things are looking up 🙂

My dachshund came home early today (less than one day after his cervical disc surgery) because he is a stubborn fighter. He was standing up in his kennel a few hours after his surgery even though most dogs would be whimpering and not wanting to move. According to the vet, he's going to recover faster from this surgery than his last back surgery. I am so proud of my tough little man and I can't wait to see him after my Tennessee interview! <3

Glad to hear you were able to know he's doing well before going to your interview. Now you can go with peace of mind. Good luck!

Yes my mind is at ease now so I can focus on prepping for my interview. Such a relief!🙂

Thank you for the well-wishes!

I am very happy to hear. Happy recovery little guy 😀

Last exam before spring break is DONE! Classes tomorrow and home to PA in the afternoon for a few days! 😀

Finals are done! 😀

I hope I passed....

Meeeee too. I already have grades up for two of my classes that I'm super happy with. I also feel like I OWNED my genetics exam today, so I should be happy with that grade. But my physics exam was HORRIBLE and I'm thinking about what on earth I'm going to do if somehow I didn't get a C in the class. Sigh.

But this is the rave thread, so I'm REALLY glad to be done with that quarter and home with my family and my horses 😍

None of my grades are up yet. Which I don't mind, because I refuse to check until the new quarter starts. XD I don't even want to know. I feel good about my parasitology class, but not so much for the other two finals I took. But whatever. I did the best I could. That's all I can ask for, yes?

I hope you did well on your physics final! It always sucks coming out of an exam thinking you did badly. But it's a nice surprise if you get an awesome grade!

You do what I do, which is look into every physics course imaginable to see what counts and what doesn't count on your vet school application and bug the vet school admissions office about it 🙄

(Why oh WHY can't be take the same course over again???? Why does it have to be a course that covers significantly different material or an upper level course? BLARG. No wonder people give up and apply to tech school. Trying to replace a mark on your application is heck!)

Fingers are crossed for you :xf:

Thanks...actually, the problem isn't with knowing what course to take, but the fact that this particular course was a pre-requisite for my vet school, and getting a C in this class was a condition of my admission since I hadn't taken it prior to application. For my vet school, if your undergrad is on a quarter system (mine is), you have to have ALL pre-reqs done by the end of Winter quarter.

So when I say I don't know what I'll do if I get a C, I REALLY don't know what I'll do if I don't get a C. Possibly talk to the prof and inform him that I had a B+ going into the final, so obviously I knew what I was doing and that final was just RIDICULOUS, but more than likely speak with the vet school and see if there are any other options.

But I'm trying not to worry too much about it. Grades probably won't be posted until Monday, and with the curve and everything I *should* be able to make the grade. We'll see.

On a rave, it's a gorgeous day out and my GF and I leave for Chicago in the morning =)

One of my interviewers this morning at Tennessee rescues dachshunds. Heck YES.

The joys in the little things in life.

This little segment on the radio this morning totally made my day! It was Spring Break Confessions, and man did they deliver. I think it started out with a mom on the line who wanted to check in on her son (I didn't hear the reason why). So the radio called him, and starts asking about his spring break. Guy comes on and starts going off about how he "did it" in front of a bunch of girls. he just kept going on about that and it was really confusing exactly what this "it" was. Then it gets even more bizarre as he starts talking about how he's feeling like he's about to cry. Radio host keeps trying to make sense of the situation, and asks why he wants to cry. Apparently he jacked off in front of a bunch of girls, and they laughed at him? Very sad. but this is where it gets good. His mother comes back on and is like "oh my poor baby, i'm so sorry baby. maybe you should come home to your mama"

man, seriously... if my son started crying on live radio about jacking off in front of a bunch of girls and being laughed at, I'd cry...

This was a great one to hear while prepping animals for spay/neuter

In a few months, I'll get to live with and spend my time around people who are actually interested in the stories I have about animals and things that happened at work/school. Getting pretty sick of people being sick of me talking about cool cases, crazy clients, etc - the stuff that fills my life - soon I'll be surrounded by awesome people like you guys who are forever interested in this stuff too. 🙂

I got to go skydiving for the first time last week!! So scary but so worth it! Life is awesome! 😀

It's spring break, and I got to spend part of the day with Jane Goodall out on the prairie, and then listen to her give a lecture this evening. What a freaking amazing woman!!!! This high is going to carry me through the rest of the semester! 😀😀😀😀😀 I can't stop smiling!

Finally got to see my dachshund tonight! He's moving around a lot better even though he's being super careful. He has some edema around his incision but we started therapeutic laser treatment today so that should go away soon. I missed my little man!!!

I ran a 10k race this morning in 50:42!!! I haven't raced in so long and it felt amazing.
