Passed my second anatomy test by a bit higher than my first and only one more anatomy test to go before I'm done with it!

Until surgery, but still, the light at the end of the tunnel makes me happy.

On Sunday, at a horse show, I came out of the arena and turned my horse around just in time to watch my best friend and her horse jump, land, and fall. Her horse's head impacted the ground face-first, and she landed under his front feet - he managed to pull himself up but he stepped on her face and head in the process. She was taken to the hospital and they found fractures in her sphenoid, frontal, and occipital bones.

Here's the rave part - in spite of the fractures, there is no swelling or bleeding in her brain, no spinal trauma, and no other broken bones. She was cleared by every possible doctor yesterday afternoon after staying for monitoring for 24 hours, and allowed to go home last night! She's not allowed to do basically anything for a few weeks, and no riding for 2 months (which she is decidedly not pleased by), but she is very lucky that it wasn't worse. I am so glad she's ok. 👍

Keep your fingers crossed for similarly good news on her horse, who has a mild concussion and is getting x-rays done tomorrow on his neck. :xf:

Hope the best for the horse :xf:

Wow! That's amazing! So glad she came out of that okay!

Fingers crossed for the horse too. :xf:

Hang in there!!! I hope everything goes well with your friend & her horse 🙂

RAVE: I LOVE ARUBA - mainly for the nature here. My pictures consist of lots of animals & plants 😀 (Now, if only the whining would stop.....)

A good cheesesteak (Amoroso roll and real provolone) and water ice for lunch...two of the things I miss most about PA!

I heard on the radio this morning that the municipalty doesn't want to put money into improving the transit system because "not enough people use it".

So, I went on the radio's FB page and gave my little rant. I told them that I would use it a LOT more if it didn't run once every 2 hours in the evening and if it rain on Sunday. I also said that the main reason why I quit my job is because I had to walk 30 minutes there and 30 minutes back because transit would put me there 10 minutes late for a shift or 50 minutes early. Back when I lived on residence, it would cost me $9 to get home after a shift (which was more than I made an hour). I mentioned that I had a couple of friends who purchased cars they cannot afford because it was difficult for them to get home from school and work using transit. Also, some of my profs admitted that they would take transit to work over driving if some of the routes were more direct.

I've been saying all of this to transit since I got here.

There was supposed to be this big "5 year plan" to improve the transit program, but I guess that has fallen through. They held a bunch of meetings with the public about this a couple of months ago. I couldn't attend because... well... there a bus to get me to the meeting, but not a bus to get me home.

Anyway... the radio station wants to interview me, which I think is kind of cool 😎

It's a little too late for me to benefit from this (I leave in about 5 months time), but hopefully it will make a difference to someone down the road.

Everything is coming together so perfectly in my life right now. I'm just amazed and happy to be blessed in this way!

from school to apartment to horse to job. All's good right now. *happy sigh* :soexcited:

I am really diggin' my microbio lab right now. We were asked to bring in a water sample to analyze, and our instructor told me I should bring in some of my horse's water. I think it should be pretty cool.

Yesterday I was given $20 and a bottle of wine for showing my friend's brother how to give their dog shots. It was hilarious and wonderful. I wish I always got rewarded for yelling, "JUST DO IT! GO FOR IT! STICK IT INNNNNN!!!! YEAH WAY TO GO!!!!"

You mean you dont get rewarded for that normally? My mind went to a dirty place....ha

ETA: Although I do think it would be a bit of a turn-off for somebody to be yelling that in your ear during the deed.

I loved microbio lab. Except for the fact that every time we worked with stains, I would inevitably come out with funny coloured blotches on my hands. 😀

Me too! I was a big green weirdo the day we did endospore staining. I let my partner do all the gram staining because she is much more graceful than I am!

👍

If you want to come visit the UK... let me known 😀

Microbio was my favorite pre-req class. Not too difficult theory-wise and lots of fun lab stuff! 👍

I also love that OneRepublic song!

I just got back my second embryology test of the semester and I got a 94%! I'm so relieved. I only got a 74% on the first exam, but even worse- I felt like I didn't really understand much of the information. I buckled down and studied harder for this one and it's so great to see that pay off. So despite the yucky weather and the fact that I'm sitting here with my physiology textbook on my lap, I'm just having a really happy moment right now. 🙂

keep up the good work; if you want some extra motivation, you can probably get developmental bio exempted at Penn. And trust me, you do not want to take developmental bio here 😛

1) Don't be hating on pig embryos! That was the highlight of my labs so far.

2) And a rare rave from me: "I love classes starting at 10am... 4times this week!"

Really??? Do you have to pass a test or something? Or is a passing grade (or an A or a B) sufficient to get exempt? I'm taking developmental bio this semester and would love not to have to live through it again 😀

Another rave: the vet I've been shadowing brought up LORs in an offhand way that made me super happy because she's been thinking about it! And I haven't mentioned it to her because I haven't known her that long. But I'm super stoked! 😍

Every class that allows it has different standards but they generally require an A or B, a copy of your transcript, a copy of the syllabus, name of the textbook used.

Exemptions were allowed in Histology and Dev Bio in 1st semester.

Biochem exemption essentially only for students with a biochem related PhD (apparently they also offer a comprehensive oral exam in front of the whole biochem staff for non-phd students - which no one has ever passed!).

Winter quarter no exemptions I believe.
Spring quarter exemption available in immunology and nutrition (a lot of people got exempted from nutrition).

None of that applied to me...(deservedly so).

Thanks SOV! I would definitely not pass a biochem oral exam! Lol. But I think I can manage at least a B+ in developmental (though I have a test next week which'll probably kill my good grade). Stupid allantois...

I shadowed an equine vet yesterday. It was my first time around horses😳
It was very interesting!

This was a really scary live news segment- from just today. One of my personal worst nightmares. Colorado has been really warm and dry and windy = major fire danger. A grass fire started just today south of Denver, in a pretty dense horse/hobby farm sort of area.

So, a MAJOR RAVE to some AWESOME firefighters (it has a happy ending, but don't watch if you're prone to fire-based nightmares...):

Handed in my thesis today! After a week of spending nearly every waking hour writing, rewriting, editing and re-editing the monstrous document, it sure feels good to have it done.

After watching a necropsy (which was really cool, seeing and tracing the masses that had shown up on ultrasound), I got to suture up the cat. It was my first time suturing and really fun and exciting to do. Not as hard as I thought it would be, though definitely need to work on my hand-eye coordination!
😀😀😀

I have a cold, and I think my voice is pretty dang sexy.
(not intellectually sharp and eloquent enough to be on the radio though)

This reminded me of the Friends episode where Phoebe tries to get a cold to make her voice sound good.

SUCH a good day!!!

-I'm down 11.6 pounds since this time last month
-My first class today (Companion Animal Fundamentals) my professor said "I don't want any of you to stress over this class, I want you to sit back and enjoy it." Will do!
-My second class today I found out that I'm in the same section as my really good friend (we both thought we were in different sections). Since I've come here we've had at least one class together every quarter so we were really disappointed that we couldn't make it work this time. SO glad it did, plus there are about 5 or 6 other people in the class that I know.
-I ran for the first time in a couple months and it felt AWESOME!
-I made a Weight Watcher's recipe (beef and brocolli stir-fry) that came out AMAZING and I'm super excited because I didn't know I can cook. The GF also loved it and requested that I make it again 😍

I love days like today 👍

I am on cloud NINE right now!!!!

I have been floundering around trying to figure out what to do in my gap year (something related to animals/vet med, but not very stressful and preferably exciting). These requirements have turned out to be rather ambitious...

BUT!!! I applied for a position helping a farmer nurse orphaned lambs in July/August (she rescues them, then uses them for her herd), and she not only accepted me, she told me that she was going to ask her vet friends about shadowing for a few days!!! AND it's in NEW ZEALAND. GAHHHHHH!!!!! I'm super excited (and none of my college friends get it/they're all being lame & studying). Now just to fill the other 11 months... LOL

Sad... I'm taking Developmental Bio right now (in undergrad) and it's pretty much the coolest subject matter ever. My prof really makes it sound alive and we all started cracking up during class the other day when he was talking about how the allentois (pee compartment) becomes humongous and basically takes over the little embryo's world! Okay, so I"m easily amused. But it's unfortunate Penn doesn't make it that fun 🙁

I ran a 10k race this morning in 50:42!!! I haven't raced in so long and it felt amazing.

I ran my first 10K in February & I think it's my favorite race distance. Long enough you don't feel like you need to sprint, but short enough you don't want to die. I will report back how dead I am after my 1/2 marathon in May.

Your time is awesome though!!! Did you have lovely weather?

I love it when ppl use words in a conversation like: lovely or indeed😀

Thanks! It was a great race distance. The weather was really nice that day. Sunny but a little chilly. I'd never run it before. I ran x-country in high school (which was ages ago) so I've done a ton of 5k races. Last yr I did a 10 miler which was way longer than I thought it would be. I wanted to die at about miles 3-4 but then once I got to mile 7 or so I thought, "Well I've come this far already.."
Its such a high to finish these races. All I could think afterwards was that next weekend I want to do another one! I think I'm doing a 5k on April 10th and then either a 5k or 8k on the 16th (not decided which race to go to yet.) I'm also doing that same 10 miler May 1. If anyone in/around the Philadelphia area wants to join me let me know..I'll send you race details.

Best of luck on your 1/2 marathon! Let us know how it goes!

I love it when ppl use words in a conversation like: lovely or indeed😀

I use those words regularly. Maybe because I grew up in a country that spoke British English? I find it strange that when I say "lovely" people always think I'm being sarcastic or not serious.

Just added up my clinical hours and I have 376 "vet exp hours"!!!!!! Plus about 1000 hours in research, I'm super excited! Totally going to get at least 6 or 7 hundred by the fall when I submit my app!

Oh my gosh you guys are seriously mirroring my race schedule this year! I just ran a 10k (LOVED the distance) and am going to run my first half marathon in May! Good luck guys!

"Indeed" makes me think of Teal'c from Stargate SG-1. So now I can't say/use it with a straight face.

<---total Stargate geek here... except for SGU. Not my cup of tea.

Even though my car broke down last week and it's going to cost nearly 2 grand to fix, I got accepted to vet school, it's spring break, I'm going to look at a duplex on Thursday, and I'm making a ton of progress on the wedding planning on Thursday and Friday. My top choice for wedding location is available the day we want our ceremony, as is a top choice for the reception. So excited!

... Do you live in MN by any chance?

Hehe, the runner's high sure is addicting!!!

I defended my Master's thesis today!!!!! Having my advisor tell me that I passed was so surreal. I"m still on Cloud 9! 😀

I didn't like SGU, either. I watched most of the first season solely because I liked Greer, but then I just couldn't deal with all the in-ship drama and stuff, so I just stopped. And I keep meaning to watch Atlantis, but never find the time.
