After getting professional help, I feel awesome. No more anxiety and the things I used to love excite me again! 🙂

Last night I worked the late shift and I got to see an emergency GDV surgery at 1am! 😀!!! it was awesome!

I feel like this is the only place where I can say this and not get strange looks:

I GOT TO RUN THE ELECTROEJACULATOR TODAY!

😀

Totally found a $5 off Harry Potter DH1 dvd coupon. And inside that, a $5 off any HP blu-ray (though I'm not using it.... so if you want it, pm me). Anyway, you just have to register here to print the coupon, but it expires on the 23rd:

I went to tour the wildlife rescue/rehab clinic I'm volunteering at next month, and fell in love with a white-bellied sea eagle. <3

I've been able to go and help out at the bird sanctuary where my African grey and umbrella cockatoo has been in long term foster care since 2006 (!) every weekend throughout the summer, and it's made so extremely happy. I saw them once when I came to visit CSU last year, but that was a brief visit. My grey certainly recognized me, but I wasn't so sure if my cockatoo had. He was happy as a clam to be cuddling with me, but then again, he's a cockatoo...

My grey recognized me off the bat again, and just stepped up on my hands happily when I went out to the flight to bring her in. The staff was surprised, because apparently she would never do that with anyone else. When I was first brought over to the flight that my cockatoo (Flower) was in, I didn't recognize him amongst the rest, and he was way too busy making out with his new girlfriend. But when I took him out and started playing with him, about 10 min in, it was like a switch had gone off. And ever since then, he comes running as soon as he sees me walking by.

I was extremely happy to learn that Flower had bonded with his girlfriend Lucy, and I was so proud of him! They preen each other and sit by each other all day every day. Apparently, the cargo net is Flower's territory, and no one else dares to go near it. Lucy is the only one allowed to be on it. It's so freaking cute!!! What was even cuter though, is that when I come by, the only thing Flower's interested in is me. So when Lucy follows him and tries to engage him in PDA, flower scoots away as if to say "no, not in front of my mama!" After a while, it gets to the point where Flower will take is foot and push her away. Just about made me die from all the cuteness. Caught this one on video:

Anyhoos, I am so grateful that this org has graciously accepted to take on my birds until I finished my schooling. Without them, there is absolutely no way that I would have been able to go to vet school. They've been so supportive every step of the way, and the quality of care they provide is just so outstanding, I continue to be amazed every time I'm there.

That's so funny! Glad they are doing well and that you've gotten to spend some time with them this summer. I remember how excited you were to finally get to see them again last year!

After being worried that I wouldn't even get in to take the gre today since my last name was weird on the registration I rocked the test.

Nice one!

My insignificant (but still a rave) rave: I beat the Cracker Barrell peg game on my first try at lunch today. Then I tried to remember how I did it and failed miserably, but that's okay, once is enough 😀

got my coveralls in the mail today. i was so worried they wouldnt fit because i just had to order them over the internet, but they're great! i also have to add that i am so so so happy that they are short sleeved and i dont have to worry about insulated ones 😀😀😀

I am getting the most incredible experience with this vet I work for. He specializes in embryo transfer in dairy cattle but he also does some work with sheep and goats. Since he's close to retiring age he lets me do all of the blood collections for various tests in sheep (he claims he'd never be able to get back up if he bends down😛). I took almost 200 blood samples so far this summer. He's starting to teach me how to search for and handle bovine embryos.

He also teaches the vet tech courses part time at the Agricultural College and he takes me into the teaching hospital with him so I get to see what all the vet tech students are up to in their labs. He teaches undergrad mammalian physiology as well, which he is going to have me marking, TA'ing the labs and sitting in on his lectures.

Finally, he insisted on taking me to the CVMA Convention earlier this month and I went to a bunch of continuing ed lectures and I found it all so fascinating. I loved every minute of it and it wasn't so over my head that I wasn't able to follow along (I chose my lecture sessions carefully).

Hands down, my current boss is the most amazing boss I've ever had and he's sooo routing for me to get into vet school. I will owe him a lot if and when I do finally get in!

That's great! 👍 I had a lot of anxiety and finally built up the courage to seek professional help as well, and it's helped leaps and bounds.
Definitely. I've also started doing other things like running and eating healthier to help the situation. Life is good🙂

I have a little rave, about a compliment I got via the grapevine. Dr W, my riding instructor's main equine vet, came out to ultrasound one of her horses today. I like Dr W, but never worked with him much while I was shadowing at the clinic, mostly due to scheduling conflicts. And I was never entirely sure if he liked me. I was originally at the clinic doing a practicum for a vet assistant course. During that course, I realized I really wanted to be a vet and I did have the ability to do so (I doubted myself, hence doing an assistant course). So riding instructor (who is like a second mother to me, and the AVCers will probably meet her at the blue coat ceremony) happily tells Dr W that I got in. His response was something to the effect of, "Oh good. I could always see in the clinic that she had so much more potential than being an assistant. She needs to be in vet school."

😳 And to think I thought he didn't like me.

To mitigate the badness that was this week, I finally went to the new tattoo parlor that opened in the building downstairs to get more ink. It's a husband and wife-owned business, they are totally awesome and sweet, and I've been excited for them to open for WEEKS. And I got my new ink and I'm absolutely thrilled with it.
AND my boyfriend got a little tattoo! 😀

I bought all my books for this semester today and after running around the city, checking out every single book store, I saved a ton of money. 🙂

After about 3 months of severe medical problems, multiple tests, not being able to eat much for the past 3 weeks and losing 30 pounds; I finally got an answer early Saturday morning, had surgery and am now feeling AMAZING!! Now I can get back to visiting SDN more often, trying to find new animal experiences to improve my application and rock out my third application. Third time applying will be the charm!! I can't wait to catch up here on everything I have missed on SDN over the past few months. 😀

So happy to hear that! I thought you were just taking a "break" after the disappointment. Great to have you back!

My fish isn't dead. :]

My boyfriend called me yesterday, saying that one of my goldfish died. He sent me a picture and he really did look dead. I told him to leave him in the tank and I'd take care of it later. (I was babysitting all day and he needed to get to work, too.) When I came home and passed by the tank, I saw him swim faster than ever. And yes, when I looked closer, it really was the supposedly 'dead' fish.

He's now the one who lived. :]

Had a somewhat enjoyable drive to work today. It's cool to have two enjoyable moments on the drive.

All those "where's a cop when you need one" thoughts were partially sated in this schadenfreude moment .... I was driving at 60 in a 55 (I've averaged a speeding ticket every year or so for the last decade; I'm trying to reform myself.). Some muttonhead was riding my tail so close I could identify the booger he was picking from his nose. After 5 minutes of this aggressive bumper sniffing, he finally laid on his horn, blasted around to the left, and passed me. Why he didn't do it 5 minutes earlier is mystifying; the left lane was empty the whole time.

Anyway... 200 yards after he blasted past me he also roared past the cop hiding behind a bridge support. Cop promptly pulled him over.

I admit, I waved when I passed him. Horrible.

A few minutes later I was on a cloverleaf when a hawk fell out of the sky right next to me. Like, literally, it looked like it fell out of the sky. It wasn't a graceful "I'm going to come down and grab my meal" kind of attack. It was a flopping, twisting, help-I'm-going-to-crash-and-burn type of thing. Except that a few seconds later it came out of the brush with a meal in its claws. Really cool!

It was hard to see, of course, since it was flopping and twisting, but I thought it looked like a Cooper's Hawk. Except, it was quite a bit bigger than I thought Cooper's Hawks get. Anyone know what kind of hawk in MN has similar coloring, is bigger, and hunts by apparently an uncontrolled fall out of the sky to squash its prey? 🙂 Are Broad-Winged Hawks at all like that?

I LOL'd when I read the part about you waving as you passed. Love it! Jerk had it coming to him. I saw a bumper sticker on someone's car once that read 'I'm not in heat so get off my ass'. It was quite amusing.

Very cool about the hawk 👍

I am off for 9, NINE!, count 'em: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9!!! glorious days!!

Had a great week at the clinic (I don't *work* there, they just put up with me hanging around all summer and "pay" me with free vet care for my critters), ending with the vet giving me two packages of expired suture, some curved scissors, forceps, and needle holders! Let the suture practice commence!

Six days of work left until I'm unemployed!!! :soexcited:

This has been a long, torturous process and I am SO excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

1) I got my first 2 real tattoos 🙂 [for those of you anal retentive people, don't worry, they're not visible in a working/school/public life environment]

2) I only have 2 more days of work!

3) I neutered 2 cats today and I spay one next week!

Epic win for #1! I just got a new one last weekend (number 5 for me). Also super jealous of your surgeries!

OMG, you're never going to get a job or be taken seriously again the rest of your life. 😉

Seriously, libster: Tattoos with no (tactful/modest) pics? C'mon.....

Oooooh, they both look really good! Congratulations, Lib. 🙂

So I'm not sure where to put this, but I felt like someone would appreciate it:

My boyfriend has two cats. One REALLY loves him. As in... I get kind of jealous of their creepy relationship. Anyway, we got up to take a shower this morning, and the cat sat in front of the shower just staring at the BF. So he went and picked him up, while standing out of the stream of water. I was like, "Get the cat out of the shower! Are you crazy?" I didn't want to be in the same shower as a cat who was about to get wet and probably maul us both. Also, he's a long haired cat, and would totally clog the drain. Jeez.

Fast forward a few minutes later, and my BF is just standing under the shower with the cat happily sitting in his arms, soaking wet. When he finally put the cat back on the bath mat, I am pretty sure he was a little sad that he was uninvited from the shower...

I've never seen a happily wet cat.

Today my husband made a GIANT pot of pasta e f@gioli soup with a bunch of extra veggies we got in our CSA. I love, love, love soup. Even though it's going to be 90 degrees tomorrow, I can't wait to have a big hot bowl of soup for dinner. Best part? There's enough to feed us for a week and to freeze another weeks worth of meals. Hooray for soup!

Whoa, what an interesting kitty! Mine is fully convinced that he will melt if he comes in contact with a bath, like the Wicked Witch of the West or something.

Way cool sighting! This sounds like a Cooper's Hawk. They are very ballsy birds which hit fast and hard and are not afraid to pursue prey into dense cover. Coops usually hunt stealthily from trees, but are known to do the drop-from-the-sky thing. If it was bluish on top, reddish below and roughly crow-sized, it was a Coop for sure. Broad-wings are brown on top, more laid-back and almost always hunt in or on the edges of forests, swooping down from a branch to pick off small prey from the ground.

And for my own raptor-related rave, we got two bald eagles in at the rehab centre on Friday. One is young (barely out of the nest) and is missing one eye. Outer lids there and happy, third eyelid in there and working, but just a big empty space where eyeball should be. Very weird but cool to see!

The problem is I never really got a *great* view. From your description it sounds like it must have been a Cooper's Hawk. It probably looked bigger to me because of outstretched wings ... it looked like a big tangle of feathers falling from the sky, and by the time it came out of the brush with its meal I was too far away to see details. With the way it attacked, honestly my first thought was "Who the heck just shot a hawk right here in the middle of the city?"

Thanks!!

Well, I figured since I can't get accepted to vet school that I needed to have surgery instead...😛

I am glad to be back now. I missed SDN! I am ready to rock out this third application and get an acceptance this year!! :xf:
