My Plan B is firmly in place! I've just been accepted to the B.Ed program which doesn't require me to move away from my boyfriend and our dog!

YAAAAAY. 😀. So happy for you!
My plan B is to get a job that is NOT fast food, retail or call center. I have applied to ONE job. I need some luck. :luck:.

:soexcited:I got a job!!! I've been applying since before I graduated in December and been on interviews with no success. I was feeling so down about myself today and then I got the call. I got a job working with dogs at my local Humane Society.

Wow!! Congrats Hedgie! That's awesome! :highfive::clap::hardy:

Congrats!!!! You'll love that 😍 (And probably end up with some extra canine housemembers, lol)

My tiger vocalization recordings from my senior research project are being used by an Australian conservation organization to help lure a rouge tiger to safety in India. Just a few months into my research project and it's already doing something I aimed for it to do - help save wild tigers.

How freaking sweet is that?!

hahah yes, I do! I was so excited. None of my roommates are animal people so it was hard to express my excitement. Then the big cat place I intern at posted about me on their facebook page and I couldn't contain myself anymore! If anyone is interested in knowing more about the specifics of this, feel free to PM me!

Is it chuffing? One of my classmates showed us how to do that during orientation. 🙂

ETA: Becasue urban dictionary is disgusting as always, I'll add that I mean prusten. Not any of that other stuff.

For the Guide Dog Foundation, when the dog's regular handler doesn't have time or can't take the dog somewhere (chem labs for example), someone else will take care of them during that time, which is called camping.

I get to camp one German Shepherd today and a different one tomorrow. Usually, labs and goldens are first timer dogs as a puppy raiser, but I am trying to get a GSD, so I have to show I can handle them. I was told I did a really good job with the poodles and shepherds at the last meeting and that they will try hard to get me a GSD puppy. Very exciting!

😍

The Canadian Society of Zoologists is having it's annual conference in my area in May. My thesis supervisor will be presenting my research at the conference and I will be listed as first author!

I am quite excited. 😀😀😀😀

The registration deadline for the conference is approaching. I really want to go, but there is a chance I might have a job by then (that will not let me take a week off to attend the conference.) Ah well. :xf::xf::xf:. My supervisor offered to pay for my registration, he wants me to attend so badly. I want to attend as well. I heard it is a great conference and a great way to make connections for grad school (if I go that route). I am actually considering going the research route... I wonder if I can make a career out of researching emerging parasite threats to companion animals and parasites in wildlife...

Leaving to go to Ireland in 2 hours to see my boyfriend who's been gone for 2 months! Can't wait!!!

Oh my gosh, I am so jealous! What part of Ireland? i lived in Limerick last year 🙂

Nothing like seeing the raves to make this day better! Yay everyone!!! :hardy:

hedgiehog - so nice to hear you got a job!!! 😀

drwildlife 👍 saving the tigers, it's so youuuu

Trematode - glad to hear there's some positivity going on. It's well deserved!! And don't pass up on the conference - I mean, how often do you get to do that stuff???

:biglove: to all of you! Happy Thursday!!!

He's in Dublin. I'm soooooo excited! But I'm a little nervous too. I hate flying.

So many good things happening for everyone today. Love it 🙂

Congrats Hedgiehog! It always feels great to be chosen from a pool of hopefuls!

Geez Dr. Wildlife! Already saving the tigers! You're a hero! 😀

Wildcatj: I Hate flying! I get so anxious. But I'm betting that going to Dublin for the bf will make the anxiety all worth the while right? 🙂

Trematode: You're first author?! How crazy is that?! I hope you get to go! 🙂

so about a month ago, my sweet, amazing, incredible 5-year-old dog was hit by a car and killed. i have been "off" since then, but i suppose it's getting better.
she was initially my brother and sister-in-law's dog but we're a already a tight knit family and in the process of the two of them having a kid/moving/etc. my mom sort of kidnapped her for herself/us, about two years ago...
anyway, she was a Black Russian Terrier (BRT), and the breed is somewhat rare... AND even though I am a huge proponent of adopting dogs from shelters/rescuing/etc., my sweet bear/monster won me over...
my mom is absolutely not ready for a new dog, but my brother and sister-in-law are considered getting themselves another BRT, that my mom can kind of help with, and i like the idea.
SO the point of this endless story is that, unlike say, a lab (not knocking the labs, i had one growing up), BRT litters really are fewer and further between, BUT, by some serendipitous (/divine?) chance, a litter of BRT puppies was born the DAY my dog died... and there are 2 girls available.

anyone here believe in reincarnation? i'm starting to... :xf:

Oh wow, that is really cool. Must be a sign! 😀

Yes, that definitely helps. That and the fact that I have anti-anxiety meds. Sitting in the terminal now. Ahhhh!!!

Not sure why I thought this was so cute, but I think it's the bear 🙂. It made me think of squirrelsrule too 😀

Love this nail polish. (Yes, that's a cannon bone. What.)

nailpic5.jpg

Oh, my word! You should love it, it's gorgeous! Especially the shiny bit at the tips.

Ugh, I'm jealous. I'm a habitual nail picker/biter. I am so mean to my nails. 😳

It must give you superhuman powers. geesh, you gripped that thing so hard you broke off the splint bones!

Now I'm wondering if I called it the wrong thing like a doof... It's a radius. You can see the ulna at top right. Is it a coffin bone in the front? I'm starting to resent horse people for all their stupid terminology...

hahah, it's fine! Since I'm a tiger person, I knew what you meant. I love your avatar btw.

My vocalization recordings are actually a wide variety of sounds. Chuffing is one of their primary sounds. It's a greeting or a general "I'm happy" sound. When I'm at my internship, every morning all the tigers chuff at me. Of course, we all chuff back. It would be rude not to say hello in return 😀

So, to answer your question, I have sent the conservation organization chuffing recordings as well as moaning. Sounds weird right? Tigers actually moan and make mooing sounds the majority of the time they're vocalizing. They sound like a bunch of cows  The moaning sound is actually a happy sound as well and we're hoping it will make the rouge tiger feel safer/come closer to be removed safely.

coffin bone = P3, cannon bone = MT3, and the radius joins MT3 to make the carpal joint (horses are dumb-sorry horse people!) ughhhh anatomy

lol, I've made that mistake when it counted on tests (both radiology AND anatomy)! metatarsals i hope are nowhere near your carpal joint

yes, yes you do need that long weekend, seeing as there are also several carpal bones between the cannon bone and the radius 😉.

yes i knew that 😛 i meant that i had those both in the forelimb 😀 its such a lie when they say the distal limbs are virtually the same. they have different bones, different joints and different vessels/nerves. just because they look the same...

My poor Dashboy (cat) has been having issues urinating in the correct places the past few days, and it was really bad today. Found out this afternoon he has a UTI. He freaking ate the antibiotic pill when I mixed it with his wet food! Here's hoping he stays this easy to treat.

So we are just starting horse forelimb anatomy - we did neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, and hindlimb - then we spend nearly a month on forelimb, and we just started it. So it hasn't all sunk in yet. That's my excuse. 🙂

a month on the forelimb?! 😱 wow! we just did the entire horse in 6 weeks! and only 2 of those were limbs!!

I wish we'd had a month on the limbs too. We did horse+goat in 6? weeks. Do I remember any of it? No.

Yeah all our horse stuff was crammed into the 1 semester anatomy class. And we got fresh legs so you literally only had like 2 days (3 if you were brave) to even look at a specimen to learn soft tissue stuff on... Before they became unbearably slimy and stinky and vomit inducing. They just thawed new ones to use on the exam a couple WEEKS later... as if we'd remember anything but the nastiness of the experience
