Yeah all our horse stuff was crammed into the 1 semester anatomy class. And we got fresh legs so you literally only had like 2 days (3 if you were brave) to even look at a specimen to learn soft tissue stuff on... Before they became unbearably slimy and stinky and vomit inducing. They just thawed new ones to use on the exam a couple WEEKS later... as if we'd remember anything but the nastiness of the experience

our limbs were fresh too. in order to keep them "usable" and not completely covered in toxic mold, they kept them in barrels of formaldehyde. come within a few feet of those suckers and every exposed bit of flesh on your body started to burn. yuckkk. sadly i think the limbs were the most "pleasant" part to dissect because they weren't just flat out rotting :barf:

Damn, I can't complain about Mizzou!

Each group gets a (usually) well-preserved pony and calf cadaver, and we spend the entire semester dissecting them, except for the last few weeks, which are devoted to pigs and birds (don't know how that works yet).

We only have one stanky animal (it smells like sad bread). I won't complain about it ever again...

We are like mizzou - one semester for dogs and cats, and this semester for the horse with a little goat and bird at the end. We spend so long on the forelimb because it's where horses are likely to have trouble, so we learn every ligament and nerve...

Y'all are doing goat and bird this year? Interesting. Did Dr. Lish break out the super well preserved ox?

jealous of the goat.
could care less about the bird LOL

ETA: My rave-- I declawed 1.5 cats today at an awesome wetlab. And by the .5, I actually felt like I knew what I was doing and wouldn't be sued if it was a client's cat!

we spend 1 semester on dog/cat and 1 semester on donkey(=horse)/goat(=cow)/fish/bird/pig. we had to learn all the ligaments, vessels, and nerves for the limbs too, we just had to be faster about it  the limbs got the most attention of the 6 weeks

So why is there that much more time for dog and cat ? Because that's what most people want to work with?

Ours is slightly different. First semester, each group worked on one dog. One group = three people. This semester, the groups were divided in half. Half got a goat per group. The other half paired up with another group of three and got a horse. So 6 people per horse, 3 people per goat. We're responsible for learning the other animal on our own time. We did fish and bird during the first lab of the semester. One of the teaching assistants is dissecting a calf that we can look at on our own, too.

If it's anything like it is at AVC, it's because the dog is used as the base, and then in second semester you don't cover the muscles in near as much detail because it's more about learning the differences. So a lot of stuff that we covered last semester is glossed over this semester if it's the same amongst the dog/horse/goat.

for us it's because we learn EVERYTHING about the dog and cat, that way we can focus more on species differences when we get to the other animals. the anatomy is fundamentally the same across the board, its the differences that make animals unique. like the large colon of the horse, or the rumination system. stuff like that

Anyone else see the problem with this math?? I hope I'm reading this wrong!

I think (well, I'm assuming because the alternative is way too WW game-like and clearly not what is happening...) that redhead means that half of the groups get a goat and other half share a horse, rather than each group having too choose one person to split in half. Or one person that can only use their right hand for the goat and left hand for the horse...

Left hand for goat. Evil, satan, etc.

Obvi.

 Before you all continue to come up with what devious deeds might be going on at AVC...

There's 20 or 21 groups of 3 students. This semester, a third of those groups are each dissecting a goat. One third of the groups are doing the left side of a pony, one third are doing the right side of a pony. So each horse has 6 people working on it, each goat has 3 people. Clear as mud, right? 😀

wow. we're in groups of 12-13 right now, and half of each group took a side (except not really, we all just kind a chipped in every other day and studied/destressed when we traded)

oh and while i'm sure some of you are shocked at how large that is, I have REALLY enjoyed having 12 other classmates to work with/get to know better. it has been a fantastic experience so far. I really enjoy working with different combos of people and am even finding that i enjoy (gasp!!!) anatomy lab this semester unlike the never ending nightmare I felt trapped in last semester with 3 other people. maybe its the change of people, maybe its that i get to change up who I am working with each day, maybe it's that we only have lab twice a week, who knows! but there have been several lab periods that from the time we started working on our specimen to when we cleaned up, i didnt even look at the clock once! thats HUGE for me!!

I love people on SDN.
I did not realize that people on here actually pay attention to me until I started getting supportive messages in my inbox. Thank you very much. You have made the rejection a lot easier for me to deal with. 🙂

I'm glad it works for you, but I think 12 people for me would be a case of "too many cooks". Three is a good number for me. My group works really well together (luck of the draw, we ended up together on day one because everyone else was grouped up  ). Three is enough that someone can read, and two people can dissect, and we don't get in each others way and we can discuss what's going on.

For lunch today I had mini-sandwiches on slices the french baguette I made yesterday during an amazing bread making class I took (late christmas present!). Super awesome class and now I have a few scones, and loaves of sourdough, focaccia, and the rest of the baguette left over. (And some sourdough starter if I want to make more sourdough!)

So yummy!

I LOVE making bread! I've always wanted to try sourdough but have never found the time to make a starter

Our handout had two methods: the traditional method (which takes a week or so and is a big pain) or the alternative method (which is to ask a friend for some of theirs). I love the alternative method!

Sourdough still takes (comparatively) forever with a starter, though. Needs to have been fed rather recently and then needs to be prepped the day before you make. This is more advanced planning than I am currently able to handle, but I'm hoping to keep the starter relatively consistently maintained (once a week, hopefully) until I have more time and patience.

I don't seem to have access to the alternative method, hence my never having attempted sourdough  I love sourdough, but yeah, it looks like such a pain in the butt. I make a lot of pumpernickel, rye, wheat, etc, plus dinner rolls and mini loaves. All of those are relatively straight forward, just need to be home to babysit the dough.
I just bought a chest freezer though, so I'm hoping that will make me bake bread more often, since I'll be able to freeze some, rather than baking a loaf or two at a time.

If OK wasn't so far away, I'd offer you some of my starter. :/

I was surprised how straightforward bread making really is. It's always seemed more complicated and impressive to me, but it's all basically the same general idea which really simplifies things.

And focaccia (basically, any bread with olive oil in the dough) freezes and defrosts to eat really well.

Wow - bread bakers? 😱 You guys amaze me! The only bread I've ever successfully made came in a can with the Dough Boy printed on the label.

Couple of raves today...

The Big Dance is here! Won my pool last year and hoping for a repeat! Love me some college hoops!

And, I never thought I would say this, but it's Daylight Savings!!!! I've never been a fan - springing ahead always throws me off; I have to get up in the pitch black for weeks; and well, it's just another reminder that snow season is just about over (like we got any this year anyway). But... With it being light later I can (if I get out of work at a decent hour) run OUTSIDE any day of the week!!! I despise the treadmill and do so much better when I'm outside. Hooray!

So, I normally don't care about basketball at all, but my college has made it for like the first time in god knows how long. The last time they won MAACs was back in 94. They play this Thursday against Ohio State, and while I don't expect much, I'm happy to see them make this far. Guess I'll have to actually watch and pay attention this year.

And I also agree with your last bit. We just got my aunt's treadmill which I'll use if I have to, but I also prefer running outside. But since I like running in the evening it's hard when it's winter. Now I just have to wait for my ankle/foot to heal.

Well, how 'bout that? A friend of mine from grad school went there too! Class of '95. Small world...

And sorry to hear that your ankle is still giving you issues. I didn't post anything on the fitness thread hoping that it would keep the jinx away and you would heal quickly. Right now, I'll :xf: you're up and about without issue soon!

And simply for kicks... NJ beat up on the Flyers 4-1! :claps:

I got to assist after hours on a necropsy of an obese raccoon. My vet explained everything in perfect detail, all the organs, whether they were normal or abnormal, possible causes, etc. We opened one kidney and found a stone, then found hydronephrosis in the other! Afterwards, my vet taught me how to suture him up again. I loved everything about it. No guts, no glory!

Woke up this morning to sunshine and kissed my SO bye bye as he left for work. Two hours later still lying in bed with kitty cats sprawled on top of me. Spring break b***ches!!!!!

I love MSU CVM. They are so understanding and encouraging.😍

mmmm.... cereal....

I literally lived off of the Malt-O-Meal bags of cereal in undergrad... can't wait to do it for another 4 years😎. Except this time I will have to find an even cheaper brand (if it even exists).

I'm having a great time in Colorado! My face is a bit sun and wind burned, but the skiing is just so much fun! Bets spring break ever! I haven't skied in about 6 years, but it came back so easily!

Great way to relax after such a stressful week!

I'm going to a horse show with my boyfriend next weekend and he just agreed to let me bring a guide dog! She's a poodle and is older, so she'll be part of the vet program. She doesn't know much due to being a show dog before and it just wasn't important to the owners, but she is such a sweetie!

😍

I haven't worked on my thesis project since August.
But one of the connections I made at a conference took my data and got some RESULTS!

For my thesis, I collected parasites and sequenced a gene because I wanted to identify them to species. My gene sequences got me down to genus level for some. Collaborators took the sequences and came up with two identical matches in their database. So I have two specimens identified to species, which I was aiming for, one confirmed at genus level, and one unknown (ooo spooky, wonder what it could be?!)

It's looking like my name will be featured in the Journal of Parasitology. 😀.

Not too shabby considering I went into this project with a supervisor who does not specialize in parasites. We also did not know if the project would work..

Wait your boyfriend shows horses? He got any friends? 😍

No. Hahaha he works at horse shows as jump crew and sometimes as a groom. When there are no shows, he builds tack trunks, bridle racks etc. and helps our with anything that barns need (building fences, barns etc).

WelshCob- if you want horsey boys, try entering the polo world for a while... but be prepared for alot of public urination. 🙁

:woot: So awesome, Trema!!

Make that 9. 😀

And Crosby's back tomorrow night!!! 😍😍

Granted, I bet he'll only play one or two shifts and might only touch the puck once, but it's a start! Oh Rangers, you're going down!

I have my 2nd interview today for Hill's Pet Nutrition. SUPER excited! :xf: :xf:
