I finished my last final today! And after a long and grueling week, it snowed in Texas! Couldn’t have been a more perfect end to the first semester of vet school.

I move from Texas to Kansas and Texas gets snow!! Not fair at all.

Rave: I turned in my English paper. I need 20/30 for an A. I think I have it! Now 3 finals next week. Bio, Chem, and Animal Science. I need a 57, 64 and 70 to get A's. I kind of have to make myself study! Can't believe my first semester (and 16 hours of pre-reqs) is almost over! 48 more hours to go!

Snow is not cause for celebration
~ The Midwest
I’m with KC and the Midwest. And yeah, no. Snow is a no. I’ve spent too many Chicago winters to ever be excited again about the snow.

I was originally going to go to Hawaii over break with my friend since his job landed him guaranteed seat tickets. However my dog decided that I had entirely too much money in my bank account and decided to pull a FCE AND a subsequent HGE the week before thanksgiving. Now I have no spending money, so no Hawaii.

Yesterday, he lets me know that he found a nice deal for a cruise through his work. Week long cruise, visiting Honduras, Believe, and Costa Maya in Mexico. It's cheap enough that I can work before break and probably be able to afford it.

That's not the best part though. The cruise? It's a Star Trek cruise.

Time to pause for effect.

A STAR TREK CRUISE.

Southern California has been battling multiple wildfires that have already caused immeasurable losses of life to many animals and household pets.

The fires are driven by strong winds - so powerful that it is nearly impossible to escape the wind-driven firestorm fast enough if you're an animal or a pet that is alone or confined to a stable. There is simply nowhere to go.

Here is a bright ray of light in the midst of tragedy: an officer rescuing a cat from an evacuated neighborhood that was eventually engulfed in smoke and flames.

I was watching a video this morning where the folks at a stable had to let >20 horses loose and hope they could run to safety while the whole property burned down around them. It was horrifying to watch and I really feel for all of the people losing homes, loved ones, and pets down in CA right now.

I really hope those winds calm down so they can get control over the fires. AZ has sent reinforcements to help out. Wishing the best for all of California.

I spent the day crafting. It was great until I went to buy a little tree and people forgot how to drive in light snow.

I've been crafting too! Much better than studying kidneys. Much better...

This box of abandoned kittens was rescued from the wildfires raging in California.

The kittens are safe and have been placed in foster care.

Thank you to emergency rescue personnel and to foster parents everywhere! 🙂

^ can't take this away from me until I'm dumb enough to move somewhere that actually regularly gets snow. Until then my once a year or so gets HYPE.

I lived in miserable Canadian winters for 3 of my 4 years in vet school...I still get excited for snow 🙂 Maybe a little less than before though, haha.

Got to first assist on a splenectomy this morning and it was amazing. The spleen was about 4-5x bigger than it should have been. It was cool to get to integrate what I learned first semester while watching a surgery. Plus I caught another probable cancerous tumor we got to take out before we closed her up. The surgery went well and the dog is doing well too!

First spay was a success! (Minus the whole cutting the fingertip off my glove not once, but twice, when cutting my top drape...)

Congrats!!!

Do you feel like your gloves are too big? I didn't notice how big the size 6.5 was on me until I switched to a 6 (only about 2 months ago)...the snug fit is so much better and I don't catch my glove fingertips in things anymore.

(^seriously, this. I wear 6.5s because it is what all the female vets at my clinic have and I don't want to have to stock a different one, but especially if you have stubby fingers like me the size down is really nice).

I didn't think they were (they passed the fit test by the person who sizes us?) but apparently they are since my fingertips were sagging ever so slightly. Another issue is that I need latex-free gloves, and one brand/material fits differently than the type of material they gave me, so it's hard to predict what they're actually going to order me and if they have sample sizes of that brand/material.

I wore a 7 today. I'll have to try a 6.5. The 6's I wore once were uncomfortably tight, but again, different material. Hopefully I have my preferences nailed down by the time I get out of here.

Aren't you about to be the only female vet again? Time to stock the smaller size. 🙂

I have big palms, stubby fingers haha. The palm of the 7's fit fine!

Yeah brand definitely matters too. It isn't like you are stuck to a single size once you graduate so I'm sure you can experiment at your place of business (if you go GP) and get down scat works for you. 🙂

Our surgeon is female. :arghh:

Brands varying is super true, though. We got a bunch of different samplers when they stopped doing powdered gloves and the variation is honestly ridiculous.

Different brands can definitely vary greatly in size/fingertip length. It was a PITA when we were switching from powdered to non-powdered gloves at work. I wear a 7 1/2 in the new brand and a 7 in the old brand. For awhile all the 7's were the new brand and all the 7 1/2s were the old brand. Very annoying.

Wait why is that a big deal? We literally have three different sizes of gloves. I think one vet wears a 7, one wears a 6.5 and a I'm a 5.5 (yes I represent the lollipop guild).

1st semester undergrad is done. 16 of 64 prerequisites hours are done, 13 more planned for next semester and 3 over the summer. Grades are all in and I'm REALLY happy with them. Moving into the frat house right after Christmas. Spending a week at the gf's before I go home. Her parents got us tickets to the Kansas City Chiefs football game tonight. So far I'm loving college life. I'm going to enjoy it while I can.

Here are photos of more animals that were recently saved from the Southern California wildfires.
Thank you very much to all counties and states that have sent fire crews to fight these California fires! 😍

Had my mid-rotation evaluation today for our radiology rotation here and I've gotten A's on all of our exams/rounds cases so far. The chief clinician told me she's been super impressed with my knowledge base and that I have a real talent and eye for radiology, and offered to write me a recommendation letter next year for residency applications 😀 It touched my heart 🙂 The fact that she's a very well-known radiologist doesn't hurt either!

Exchanged gifts with my hubs last night and I want to punch myself for my rant earlier in the week (more than a week? idk - blame it on PMS + having a lingering cold that has reduced my sleep substantially).

He got me like, the best presents, and I am so lucky. A new lens for my camera for our upcoming honeymoon, freaking Guitar Hero for the WiiU so we can play together, and a heated mattress pad. I slept so freaking well last night despite still having this stupid cold.

Rave #2, I got my primate rotation evaluation back from my supervisor vet. She is crazy smart and for a good part of this past 6 months I've been convinced she thought I was a *****. She gave me an "excellent" in every category and even wrote up a glowing report about how wonderful I am. I legit started crying when I read it. I love this program so much.

Now sitting at work listening to Christmas music and hoping no **** hits the fan this weekend and just happy 🙂
