I interviewed on Friday, the 23rd. I was the first interview of the morning at 9, and I was there for the GEP program. When I was there, I saw people not wearing suits, some guy who was overly dressed in green (black suit, green shirt and tie, ha ha), and the girls were dressed in skirts and pants (general business attire). The interviewers were all in suits.

I went into the holding room, where the representative from the "other side" of the Atlantic Bridge was. Basically the equivalent of Peter and Louis from ABP in Ireland. Then after the interview we went in there to chat about the actual interview. Very nice set up and comforting atmosphere.

The GEP interview was conducted by Alan Johnson and Cathal Kelly. The former is the director the GEP program and the latter is the dean of the faculty of medicine and a highly prominent surgeon. The interview was very straightforward and laidback. They had a form that they filled in as we spoke and this form is the same for all applicants to ensure consistency across all applicants.

They started off asking me about my alma mater in a very generic way: Tell us about your undergraduate institution. So I went on talking about every aspect I could. Thank God I gave tours for a semester as an undergrad so this bit was rather easy.

Then they asked about my majors and minors and why I chose those departments to study in.

Then they asked me why I switched out of pre-med and then back into it, and I expained it thoroughly because this could give them a great deal of skepticism. Then they were going to ask why medicine, but they told me that my previous answer was sufficient and thorough enough.

Then they asked why Ireland, and where I wanted to continue my practice of medicine, and if there were any particular specialties I was interested in. Then they asked which other schools I was applying to and how I heard about / what convinced me to apply to Ireland.

Then they asked me what my hobbies were and what I enjoyed doing in my spare time.

Then they asked if I was aware of the tuition and how I would pay for it.

Then they opened the floor to questions and were had a little q&a about medicine, ireland, etc.

In general, it was pretty good. The interview slots are scheduled for 30 minutes and my interview pretty much took about 25 minutes. They called the next guy in 5-10 minutes after mine was over. So I feel like the way it works is that they interview you and decide, because at this point the decision is up to the two interviewers according to the ABP representative there.

Some other questions I asked the ABP representative that might be interesting to you guys are:

1) When do we hear back? Typically 2-3 weeks after the interview.
2) How many applicants are you interviewing? Between NYC and Toronto for the first round, 140. 70 for the GEP and 70 for the 6-year program.
3) Is there a second round of interviews? Potentially. Historically there has been. It depends on how many matriculants we have from this round of interviews. First round / second round is determined by merit.
4) How many people of those interviewed are typically accepted? This varies. It is definitely a foot in the door so you are well along the way to getting a positive decision.

The other questions I asked him were more casual and questions about Dublin, social stuff etc.

Let me know if you have any more questions...

Nice summary of events and good questions to ask.

Sounds like you covered your bases very well. Good luck with the result!

I had my interview on the 28th in Toronto for the graduate program. My interview went fine except for the fact one of the interviewers (I can't recall his name) kept dozing off. He'd ask me a question, I would answer while attempting to make eye contact, and his eyes would be closed! I found this disconcerting, as I had traveled a long way to attend this interview (I'm from Vancouver). I suppose the interviewers were exhausted from all the traveling and interviewing. Regardless, it left me with a slight negative impression of the institution - falling asleep during an interview, whether you are tired or not, is extremely unprofessional behaviour.

No way!
Sorry that you had that experience. The interview seems to be the real shoe in, but ugh, that is unacceptable.
I never had an experience like that under such serious circumstances

....however, I once spoke to an admissions clerk at a state medical school who yawned (loud and clear) into the receiver while I was discussing my application.

Mr. McDuck

That's so rude. I was considering calling ABP and having them send an application and stuff out to NUIG, but they'd probably process the credit card, print out a rejection letter and send it right away.

Actually, they'd probably tell me I was a shoe in, wait a week, and then send a rejection.

Hey,

I do nto really mean to doubt what you are saying, but did ABP really tell you that "You will get an interview from RCSI" or did they say that you were a good candidate and would likely get an interview. I just can't see ABP promising this, when it was not true and they supposedly knew it. Maybe the person you talked to didn't know???? I am totally sorry for the rejection, but I was just curious about the actual conversations.
:) :)

M

Mr. McDuck

The guy was looking at my application when he told me that I'll have a second round interview. I know he was looking at my application, because he said something about my university. It doesn't surprise me at all, really. The day docolive got a rejection from RCSI, they told me that there won't be any responses until at least March. And the next day, two people got interviews.

So, either they just say things without really knowing what is going on, or they're trying to mislead people (or me, at least). But, honestly, even if they did just say, "You're likely to get an interview", they had my rejection letter in hand! How do you even tell someone that they might get an interview when you know he's going to get rejected!?!?

Don't be too hard on the APB. The people there make the best of the info they get from the Irish schools. Their job is to consolidate info and pass it on to the schools in a manageable package - they aren't involved in the decision making process at all.

And they actually seem to know each of the applicants by name and seem to be rooting for people to get into schools. Dealing with them after dealing with other admission committees is a breath of fresh air.

I wouldn't be too hard on ABP either. But just know that at the least, incoordination and miscommunication and at the most, dishonesty, is very typical of Irish administration. So don't be surprised when you encounter it at any level.

M

Mr. McDuck

I don't think I'm being too hard on them. I think it's great what they're doing. I just don't like being misinformed. I did talk to a few different people, but the one guy was looking right at my application. Unless they don't mark it on the file, I can't see how he wouldn't have known.

Water under the bridge, though. No biggie.

I agree. I think ABP has a formidable task, especially when it comes to organization and coordination with five (MED) schools in Irelan and a few other vet schools. Also, between the CA and Ireland office they have 6 employees! It sucks that their information is inconsistent but they do have a lot more of a working relationship with their applicants than US schools and it is slightly more casual.

At any rate, I called RCSI today and asked them about the decisions. They said that they will be sent to ABP Wed or Thurs of this week. So as soon as RCSI processes them and stuffs envelopes they'll send them out.

Speaking of decisions at RCSI, I think that I will ring Trinity up tomorrow morning. :D

M

Mr. McDuck

So I called ABP today, and UCD will not have decisions out until at least mid-April.

Good to know. Best wishes to those waiting for RCSI (at least we know that those are coming out soon). :luck:
And :luck: for the longer wait with UCD, UCC and Trinity as well.

I initiated my back-up plan last night. I'm not expecting much love from UCD, and at this point, I'm too detached to care.

Much :luck: to everyone!

Well, it's good to initiate a back-up plan McDuck. This way getting in might be a nice surprise. I still want to go to Ireland more than anything. I hope with all of my heart that the adcomms give me a chance. Trinity was very polite on the phone. I should have asked more questions, but I was mentally prepared only to ask how much longer until the decisions will be out.

btw, what is your back-up plan?? I remember you writing something about working at a trauma center (you're a PA, I think)? Cont. school?
Sounds like a good experience to come.

M

Mr. McDuck

Yeah, I'm interviewing to work in a trauma center, tomorrow actually. I'm going to continue school. I have no idea what I want to study really. I like engineering, history, writing, etc. Anyway, I'm probably going to move in with my girlfriend, continue school and keep working.

What's yours?

Potentially take the MCAT again, apply to state medical schools (this summer), take post-bacc classes during the upcoming year, work and pursue more experience in the field of Genetics.

lol. Don't make your decision to not go to UCD yet. Wait until you get a response from Ireland. From what I can tell, you really have a desire to study medicine and it would be a shame for you not to fulfill that dream especially if you get a foot in the door.

I had my interview about 2 weeks ago in Toronto and found out yesterday I was accepted. Before my interview the guy from Atlantic Bridge was explaining how everyone who is being interviewed has the marks academically, and they just want to know if you would be a good fit for the school. The interview was very relaxed and the interviewers very nice. Dont stress about what you're going to wear. The guy from AB was telling me that in NYC a girl showed up in jeans, but she got the spot because she was "alive" (his words not mine)

Good luck to everyone!
