Last application cycle, I only applied to two medical schools whose applications started late in the cycle (in March). I intended to apply this cycle, but since these schools’ applications opened up late last cycle, I decided to take the opportunity to apply so that, if accepted, I would be able to start medical school a year earlier than I intended. Since AMCAS doesn't consider you a re-applicant at schools you haven't applied to before, I thought I would be safe as a first-time applicant at every school on my list except for these two schools. However, I was stupid and didn't realize that a lot of schools' secondaries ask if you've previously applied to ANY med school before, and also ask what you've done since applying to improve. Since I literally JUST applied a few months ago, I haven't really done a lot of new things..I am starting one new activity in August, but I'm assuming I'll be getting most of my secondaries in July. How do I explain this to schools in a way that doesn't look bad.

ALSO: For schools that ask if you've applied to medical school before and don't specifiy whether they are talking about their own school or all medical schools, is it ok to assume they are talking about their own school given AMCAS's rules Re: re-applicants?

What you just said seems fine to me - pitch it in a way that basically makes it sound like you were applying to this cycle *early* rather than last cycle *late* as you had already gotten your application in order by then
