4VO^2+(aq) + O2(g) + 2H2O(l)

4VO2^+(aq) + 4H+(aq)

thought VO2+ is oxidizing agent. but O2 is...so can anyone explain why VO2+ is not ?

edit: the reactant is VO^2+ and product is VO2 ^ +

so, I understand why O2 is oxidizing agent. but confused about VO , is it because VO gains an Oxygen and thus acts as a reducing agent ?

An oxidizing agent is a specie that gains electrons, hence is being reduced. The O2 begins with an oxidation state of zero, and become minus 2.. The number has decreased, thus it is reduced,,,,,and therefore the oxidizing agent.

Hope this helps.

VO2 here does not change a charge, therefore it cannot act as a reducing agent.

Oh, sorry I did not see the edit
In the updated equation, V goes from +4 charge to +5, therefore it is Oxidized. If so, it can not be an oxidizing agent.

Hope this helps.

If O2 is in the reaction, it is always the oxidizing agent. Oxy=oxygen.
Also O2 got reduced to H2O. So O2 has to be the oxidizing agent.
Remember bonds formed with oxygen and broken with H usually results in oxidation.
Bonds broken with O and formed with H usually results with reduction.
