Good evening fellow DPT students,
So I have a dilemma I am faced with. I was in a program for fall 2022, passed 4 out of 6 courses. Failed 2. I was put on Academic Probation from January-August when the program will begin again.

Recently, I had a meeting with one of my counselors and was told I have to take the entire semester over again. Even the classes I passed! Is this allowed? Should I speak to the Dean again? I am very upset and deceived. Especially when I was told in writing this past winter that I would *NOT* have to retake the classes I passed.

Would anyone advocate for me in the program? Should I suck it up? Has this happened to anyone else?

Good afternoon, nobody can advise me on this? I guess this is a rare situation..

Hey there,
This has never happened to me, but you need to find the written proof that supports your argument and get a disability attorney to defend your case if it has to get taken that far. Be sure to tell them it is not financially feasible nor is it academically necessary for you to retake them (especially if you passed). If there is no official rule of this stated in their academic policy from the program’s handbook, they have no legal or ethical right to make you retake these classes.

Definitely consult with an attorney as grittygirl mentioned.

Also, if you feel deceived and you're struggling in the program you shouldn't consider staying. It doesn't sound like the healthiest thing to "suck it up" when you're going to be faced with more challenges in the future and you already resent your superiors. I would leave and consider other options.

If you were in a casino and the dealer kept hitting Blackjack would you continue to go to the ATM and return? Academia is no different.

I believe a failing grade in any course at my school would mean a dismissal. I got on academic probation with 1 C.

Audit or take all the courses again for a grade?

My program makes us re-take the courses we got a C in again (this takes place after an appeal (and you get to start again with the next cohort) AND you are on academic probation until your grades come up enough.

Just ask for clarification as all PT schools have their own rules, sequencing of courses, and even sequencing of information in each course. PT schools are not a franchise- each operates a bit differently- sometimes really differently.

You have come this far. Keep going. This isn’t undergrad survey course stuff, you really need to know the info they give you.

Acknowledge the grace they are giving you. It’s okay to repeat courses. You have an opportunity to really learn AND get a better grade. It’s a win win.

I’m in a similar repeat situation. Change the perspective— this is a very small dot in the big picture of your life. No one will care when you get your license.

Learn from this and then get what YOU want.

I’m in a similar position. I want to go back. But my spouse doesn’t want me to go back. I had a difficult adjustment- but I know I’ll be better on the second go. I had zero time, studied inefficiently (which means I would study the material then get hit by a freight train on exams and not even know what I thought I knew). I started to pull up and got through first semester. I got meds to help me in the second semester, then my gpa fell below the minimum. Without sleep, my working memory took a hit. And I would just loop and re-loop info but nothing stuck. I was an engine that could until I really couldn’t. My health took a beating. My spouse doesn’t want to see me go through it again— but I want to try and succeed. But I don’t want to lose my spouse over it.

Everyone adjusts differently. Honor your path. The profession needs you and you were chosen to be in the program.

Hey- I just re-read this part.

An option: Schedule a meeting with the Dean and print out two copies of the letter (memo?) you were given in writing. Get clarification on exactly what they meant /or are reversing.

In my experience, the higher ups at the school sometimes don’t get their rules straight. It’s an annoying caveat. In my program there were things that had to be corrected/amended. ( Maybe a lawyer is best for this?).

My school makes us pay full tuition for the repeat semesters (state school/likely cheaper than your school which is why I’m considering eating the cost) - in case you’re at a private they have their own way :/. But, a lawyer might be able to direct and guide you.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. The details are tough to navigate. I hope you get a resolution that suits you -or attains an agreeable compromise.

Hope everything worked out.
How did things end up?
