Hey, so I was thinking about re-taking a couple classes that I didn't do as well as I had hoped in to try to give my GPA a tiny boost. Does it matter if I take them again at a community college or do I need to take them at the university to have my previous grades replaced? I was going to do my gen bio and microbiology over again even though I didn't do terrible. Plus, I need something to do because I'm going stir crazy with the waitlisting.

You'll have to look at each individual school's policy. The one I know best, VMRCVM, even if you retake classes (that you got a C or better in) they will not take the better grade, only the first grade you got.

Pending each school's view of re-takes and if they accept CC courses, you would be fine re-taking at a CC. I would see if the school will even consider your new grade (average or replace) first.

Thanks. I was just curious on if it would be worth it. I think I might just stick to my plan of taking sign language and doing a bunch of volunteer work. I got B's in the classes but I had extenuating circumstances that dragged me down a bit and my entire first year was worse than I was expecting.

If you got B's, I wouldn't bother retaking. Use your time to add something else to your application.

I have actually heard that some schools (in a number of fields, not just vet med) will frown upon retaking classes in which you received a B. Yes, I think it has to do with the fact that you could have used your time more wisely in terms of improving your application.

Agreed with others, if you have B's, why bother spending the money?? Maybe consider just taking some higher level science classes to get your GPA up instead.

I'm out of higher level science classes. I graduated almost 2 years ago and I was already in the 400 levels and took most of what they had available that didn't involve specifically large animal care. I've taken two classes of biochemistry, microbiology, two classes of anatomy and physiology, histology, entomology, mycology, genetics, applied animal nutrition, animal behavior, diseases of companion animals, general chemistry and biology, organic chemistry, immunology, medical and molecular virology, and physics. I have no idea what else to take...

Well I don't know your stats, that would help to know! But maybe experiences, then? Getting more hours and a variety of experiences. Or how about some research? Lots of schools like to see that.

Yea, I'm going to go back to the original plan of just doing a ton of volunteer work at a wildlife center and a horse rescue if I can and learn sign language. The last part is just for me though. We have a deaf client that comes into the clinic and I hate not being able to communicate with her besides writing stuff down.
