Hi guys, so I really dont like KAPLANs method of doing the RC section. does anybody agree with me?.... Im a slow writer and it just takes toooo much time for me to jot down stuff...😕
what other methods has anyone found helpful?..for example, do you read Q's first and then scan article?...or do you first scan then get to questions...or have you done anything else that was helpful...
pls advise...Im lost on how to make myself more efficient in this section.
much appreciated!

I agree with you on Kaplan method. My handwritting sucks in general. Sometimes I can't even read it. I just use Search and Destroy method. I read q, find it in the article (but i make sure I read that paragraph).....I got 20's on topscore, so it works I believe.

Here's what I do. I don't like the raw search and destroy as my first option.

1. I think you should read it a little bit at least to get the backbone of it. At least the 1st paragraph.

2. After the 1st paragraph. If its a hard passsage, search and destroy that mug. But if you found the 1st paragraph to be okay to read, then keep going! And read it all then answer the questions.

I'd say the main thing will be stay calm and keep asking "What is the author trying to say?"

Goodluck!

Everyone has a different method at tackling RC I think. I personally think kaplan's method was better for me (as shown in my practice test scores...). But of course, I'm a slow reader, so search and destroy and reading first then answer methods were not good for me. =/

I read 1-3 of the questions then read until I find them. Once I get those, move on to the next couple questions and repeat. I feel this works the best for me, because regardless of inference questions or not, I will have read the majority of the passage and have a solid grasp of the ideas. If you s&d and get any inference questions, count on getting those wrong.

Tried S/D, worked ok for me, i also used a method where you just read the questions first then read the article but there was no way I could remember the questions.

lately I've been reading the passage and writing down keywords(scientific/subjects) for each paragraph and then just doing the questions. I find this method is a little more time consuming but helps me map out the passage in my head and makes it easier to find words. Works really well for heavy terminology and scientific passages.

Sometimes when I'm really crunched for time at the end, I just read, and then do the questions which actually is my second best method.

I think its about trying different methods and see what works for you...I for one don't like just looking for answers, I guess coming from a heavy bio background(surprisingly i've been doing horrible in my bio practice tests, stessing out! test in 4 days) I like to understand paragraphs and passages as a whole.

good luck!

If you s&d and get any inference questions, count on getting those wrong.

If you s&d and skip any inference questions until the end (once you have read the passage several times in the course of searching), count on getting them right

I know what you mean about the Kaplan method, when I tried it I actually ended up doing worse! It would just take me so darn long to make those maps. I came up with my own method, a bit of a modified super SnD method - I know it worked well for me, got me my 30RC, and I've been hearing that some other people are having really good results with it too. As you'll notice from the responses to this thread, everyone has a different method that works well for them, so the best thing to do is see what other people are doing, try that, and then modify it for yourself.

Good luck, and keep up the hard work!

Was wondering what everyones techniques were for the RC section and you guys answered it. Was debating which method I should use. I think I'll be using Search and Destroy because when I read the passages I get destroyed. Can't read and comprehend every detail.

I highly recommend Search and Destroy. That's what I used today and got a 21. The TOPscore RC is very similar to the real test. Try taking those 😉
