I've been told two different ways to map for the RC:
  1. read through the passage quickly and write down key topics
  2. read through questions and write down key words
In my opinion, I feel like option two is better because it is more specific, but does anyone have any advice or actual experiences with both they would like to share? thank you!

You have to sit down and try each method out. Some will work for you and some won't. Each method has worked for different people.

In my case, I started my first practice RC with the roadmapping method (#1). Many people like this method because you're really left with no weaknesses (unlike SnD with tone questions). However, I am a slow reader and took too long to read through the entire passage first. I tried Vicviper's method for my second practice RC and got much better results. Go find his post and try it out. It has mixed responses, with some people saying it was great and some people finding it faulty. Good luck on finding your strategy. 🙂
