I'm doing a few weeks of non-credit electives at a community hospital this summer (which will be the summer following MS1). Clinical experience thus far has been somewhat limited.

I'm spending 1-2 weeks in each of: laboratory med, radiology, surgery, and peds.

I'm not a gunner, and am not particularly worried about impressing my preceptors there. However, I'd like to do some reading ahead of time so I don't seem like a total dunce & so I get the most out of the experience. Also, tips for references to use during these weeks would be appreciated.

Realistically, what would you (the sages of SDN), consider to be useful preparation? What about useful (i.e. simple, high yield) texts?

My guess is that the most they would 'expect' you to know would be what you have gained from your MS1 year. This should be sufficient to not look like a dunce. Since those areas cover such wide topics, and you don't have the MS2 background - you would probably get the most out of just reading about what you see once you get there.

Good luck, sounds like a fun experience!

Thanks. I guess I was expecting that response. What I've gained from my first year is already becoming shrouded in the mists of time... I pretend like I'm going to do some review over the summer before these electives, but honestly I'm more likely to re-read Rand than Robbins. 😉
