Real life Dr. House?

okay, so this is totally not what you meant by the subject, but i don't care. if actually get into med school and graduate, i will actually be Dr. House. my older brother, even though it is a PhD, is a Dr. House, and my dad, even though he is a DMD (dentist), he is a Dr. House. so there you go, three (maybe) real life Dr. House's. 😀 😀

I've been told by several people that I remind them of him. Basically the terms used (by those who are unfortunate enough to disagree with me) to describe me are:
-acerbic
-condescending
-bitter
-curmudgeonly
-smartass
and my personal favorite, "self-important little bastard".

My medical director was asked by one of the FP residents why he didn't get rid of me because of my "attitude" after I disagreed with her (the resident) about a patient in the ED. His response was: "Because despite not having yet finished undergrad that self-important little bastard is smarter, quicker and more useful than you are. He never forgets anything to do with this line of work and he'll hand you your ass in an heartbeat in a debate." I learned from the best....my medical director is exactly like that....he even looks sort of like Dr. House.

But it's all just a defense to keep myself from getting hurt any more. If you can manage to put up with me long enough to get past my standoffishness, you will soon realize that I'm actually a pretty nice guy who will let nothing stand in my way when it comes to taking care of those I'm charged with providing for. But shhhhh....keep that to yourselves....I have a reputation to protect!

Is there such a thing as a diagnostician? All doctors are technically "Diagnosticians."

I ask this because I am watching House as we speak. What kind of doctor is House specifically? I'm pretty sure you can't go to residency for "diagnostician."

As far as real life Dr. Houses, I know a few docs that perscribe themselves vicodin. I used to take it myself, but I weaned myself from the habit.

Otherwise, I would be as miserable as him.

this is the whole reason i joined this forum.. i wanted to find out for myself if one could specialize in " Diagnostics" from what i have researched- yes one can,.,, i tend to think this is a "Board certification" tho so me being new to all of this-- i dont know or think that counts as a specialty i would tend to think that one would pick a specialty and then go to become board certified as a diagnostician-- this is just a guess from doing countless hrs of reasearch
that is my dream.

Yay! I love him, too! As cruel and mean as he is.
I doubt whether anyone in real life could get away with all the illegal stuff he does at the hospital (like lying to a transplant committee, or blowing up an MRI machine, etc), but certainly, there is someone in every hospital with his attitude.
As long as they do their job well....let the nurses do the loving.

I always guessed that House was IM. The IM people usually fill the role as the lead diagnosticians. Now this makes even more sense learning that he is sub-specialized in ID and Nephro. Very cool.

What are your experiences with this kind of person?

My Dad's a bit like Dr. House—impatient with stupidity in other docs and his patients. My Dad's a diagnostic radiologist who often diagnoses thinks that other doctors have missed (and then he goes on to insult them out of impatience that no one else can see what he sees). My Dad also thinks that most Docs do to many tests when they need much less information in most cases to make a diagnosis.

That's what I was thinking. He would have never it through the interview stage with that attitude.
