So I got my COMLEX score back for level 1 and I scored pretty low: 412. I realize this is a pretty awful score and I'm not looking for anything too competitive for residency. I am considering Family Medicine, and on the more competitive side, IM and OB/GYN. I did not take the USMLE because I thought that would hurt me in the end. I was thinking of foregoing the DO match to get something on the MD side but due to my low score, I'd like to see what you all thought. I'd prefer to match somewhere rather than scramble and I'd just like someone's honest answer to my chances at a MD residency match? Thanks! 🙂

Not sure about IM or OB, but I'm 100% sure you will be able to match at an MD FP program granted you have other strong points to your application. Obviously try to do better on level 2..but don't count yourself out. Do well on rotations and start making some contacts at programs you might be interested in.

I know of folks that failed part 1 of their COMLEX and still did very well for themselves in the MD match for FP. You may not be able to pick exactly where you go, and some programs will look you over, but you will be able to get in somewhere if you can sell yourself.

Good luck

Are ACGME residencies more forgiving of a low COMLEX then AOA residencies?

I would really recommend taking the USMLE. I think a lot of people end up doing better on it than the COMLEX, myself included. The COMLEX is such a poorly written test. I think the USMLE is a much better gauge of your knowledge base. I would think about it, it may end up helping you in the end.
