Hello all!

This is my first post, and probably the most pressing question I have currently.

I graduated high school in 2002 with excellent grades but very little money so I went to local CC. While at the CC, I was a music major with little interest in taking any classes other than my music classes. I signed up for classes like math and English, but would drop or fail them due to lack of effort. About 3 semesters in, I just stopped going. I moved away and never dropped my classes. This was 7 years ago. I decided to go back to school this past semester and know that what I want to do in life is become a doctor. I am in a trig, English and Spanish class and getting all A’s. I am very confident in my ability to continue to get good grades and my goal is to transfer to UC Davis (I am a CA resident) and eventually to med school.

My question is:
1.) How to I spin my very old bad grades and lack of direction into a positive light?
2.) If I bring up my GPA (my old GPA was like 2.5) well enough to get into med school, will my old bad grades still come back to haunt me? I am planning on staying in this CC for 3 more semesters before transferring.

Thanks so much!

I'm pretty that you'll be fine. Sounds like you have a good life story, and you went back to school after 7 years. Adcoms will definitely see that you matured. If you can bring your GPA up, which I think you will, the jump up from bad to excellent grades will not hurt you at all.

The above advice is solid. Also, you might want to post this is the nontraditional forum. There tends to be more people who are sympathetic to your plight over there. Best of luck!
