Great poll! Thank you InfinityDrop! would love to see a lot of responses 😳

to the person that polled an 8, its fine if you want to stay anym, but otherwise, can you comment? It seems really unusual.

Either they are lying or their interviewing skills can be compared to the smell of a skunk's ass.

There's two people now. Think they are just messing with the poll?

In the '07-'08 cycle, I got 4 interviews. I was placed on two waitlists, and ended up withdrawing from both shortly before school started.

This cycle, I have 4 interview invites, one of which I turned down, plus two acceptances and one decision currently in limbo.

I applied to 9 schools each time. Several schools were the same between cycles, but there were a few different ones as well.

You probably shouldn't put 0 as an option too.

That's very interesting. Congrats on your acceptances this year! If you don't mind sharing, what did you do differently between the two cycles?

Just curious: Why did you withdraw from two waitlists if you weren't in yet?

0 interviews last year...what a bummer. I've had 4 this year, and so far, I'm 3 for 3 in acceptances, 2 of which were from schools that flat out rejected last year...

Quite a few things, some of which is outlined on my MDApps profile. I got a lot more clinical experience, because that's what I was lacking in most. At the time of my first interview, most of my clinical experience consisted of a couple shadowing experiences and a couple weeks working at a doctor's office. Not enough to really understand the details and trials of medicine.

I also grew up... I was rather young when I first applied (19 at my first interview), and the time out in the 'real world' did me a lot of good. Not that I wasn't mature before... I was just naive and a bit too carefree, and I had a terrible self-esteem. So, I grew a lot that year I took off before I applied again. Best decision of my life.

To clarify, I literally withdrew two weeks before school started. It was at the very end of July. It was a heart-wrenching decision, but I'm glad I made it. I had already decided that I was taking a full year off to beef up my application before I reapplied, so I didn't even have another application in the works.

Why did I withdraw? I hadn't done the FAFSA (bad decision on my part, but my heart was broken when I was flat out rejected from my state school), and I didn't have the money to move across the country (to NYC, no less, as one of my waitlists was at NYU) had I been accepted in the week before school started... and I wouldn't have been able to get loan money for some weeks, so it's not like I had that to fall back on. I also realized that I wasn't ready for medical school, and I would've crashed and burned had I gotten in at that time.

So according to this lovely poll, one seems to need more than 4 interviews and less than 8 to bag an acceptance.

Not always the case. Just depends on how many schools you applied to within the scope of your application and how good of a match adcoms considered you for their school. Most people will apply to 10-15 schools and get only 1-4 interviews in all. Then again, SDNers are not necessarily an accurate representative sample of applicants since many of us here have highly competitive applications and can easily get 5+ interview invites depending on the choice of schools. Some will even withdraw their interview invite because they already got into the school they wanted.
