This is my first cycle applying and I've gotten wait listed pretty much everywhere that I have applied. My EC's and GPA are good (3.8, experience as an emergency room technician and an EMT), but my MCAT could be better (30). I do not think I could take the MCAT again until August, which would mean submitting my AMCAS application rather late in the cycle. I know this is significantly to my disadvantage, so would it be better to take two years off and reapply in the 2015 cycle?

Also I forget-- does your AMCAS application wait to be put in the verification cue until your MCAT scores are in? Or will it verify itself since I will have had an old MCAT score already received?

Would your application be strengthened in any way by taking a gap year, other than a *possibly* improved MCAT?

Do you have the financial means and support system in place to support another year on your own?

What state do you live in?

How early did you apply this cycle?

I would take the two years working full time as an EMT (as of now I am just becoming certified and have just been doing ride along's and volunteering.) I have the finances/means to take the time off (what's up, mom?!) and I live in NY. I applied early, was verified in August.

Primary application will be verified without the MCAT (old score or not). But you might not want your old score submitted in the new cycle...

I'm in a similar boat in terms of waitlist and needing to retake MCAT (for time reasons moreso than score), but I applied late this cycle (primary verified in October, secondaries in November-December). I'm thinking I'll sit out this cycle since 1. my application won't be substantially improved now (though it would be next year, due to EMT work, research, and volunteering) and 2. I'm just too worn out from school and applications and everything to start up again so soon. So that's my thinking, don't know if it helps, though it is comforting to hear someone else is thinking something similar to me 🙂

Hi, I am new to this forum ( haven't written anything before) but I am also thinking of what would be best in terms of reapplying. I only got a few interview invites this cycle and haven't really heard anything positive from most of my schools. I KNOW that my weakness if my MCAT score, so I guess its worth reapplying, and taking the MCAT this summer again? That would require sending my application in a little later....but to me, I think its worth it. I dont think there are many other things I can dramatically improve. I've done so much volunteering, shadowing, and had great ECs in college.

I thought we didn't have an option on what scores we want to send?

I'm in a similar boat in terms of my application progress this year, and my MCAT is my main weak point as well. I am preparing to take the MCAT again, in time to reapply this coming cycle. Since my MCAT is going to be the only big change to my application, how much do I need to change my personal statement? (I am assuming it's OK to leave all my "activities" information the same for Application Round #2)

If you know your MCAT is a point of weakness, wouldn't it be better to take the time to study so you could do really well and be successful the next time you apply?

Sorry I was unclear. You don't want to be screened out of getting a secondary before your newer MCAT score is reported. Though I'm not sure if that would be a problem with a 30..?
