Hi!
I am a non-traditional student, reapplying this year after applying extremely late last cycle. Other than submitting my primary on June 7th and my secondaries as soon as possible, my application will be largely the same with the exception of a few volunteer experiences. I mentioned I am a non-traditional applicant because I graduated in 2014, took a job in software sales and have been working successfully ever since.
Since applying last year, I was promoted and relocated from Southern California to Maryland. While paying off my student loans has been great, I know sales is not my calling and no amount of money could ever change that. The reason that I have jumped right into reapplying is that my MCAT scores will be expiring nearly everywhere and I want to avoid retaking the test if possible.
Last year:
-Submitted my PRIMARY August 30th (only bright side there is AMCAS took a couple of days to verify)
-Submitted my secondaries from September 11th-Nov 1st
-MCAT 37
-GPA: 3.77
-Science GPA: 3.79
-CA resident
-Graduated from a UC
-Worked all four years, 20+ hours a week to pay for school
-1st-year job was an admin role in a doctor's office
-2nd-4th year job was at campus gym, where I was promoted twice
-Involved in two research labs ~225 hours
-Clinical Work/Shadowing ~125 hours
-Hospital Volunteer ~155 hours
-A couple appointed positions in my sorority (not all that meaningful)
-LORs from Upper Div Neuroscience professor, Chemistry Professor, Research Mentor, Undergrad work supervisor, and a Non-science Professor
This year:
Same as above and...
-Volunteer work with the USO ~150 hours (& adding hours weekly)
-Recently started a position as a hospital volunteer with the Red Cross....
Last year I applied to 15 schools and I intentionally aimed low. However, I failed to realize that my chances were slim because I was an OOS applicant (Ex: I applied to the University of Nebraska...I've never even been to Nebraska). Anyway, despite applying late, I received 3 interviews and was waitlisted at 2 schools.
My primary concerns right now are:
Will applying on time and to the right schools fix my application? How should I answer questions regarding my status as a reapplicant? I doubt "I'm not late anymore" will cut it....
PS I know my first application was just about as f-ed up as they come. Feel free to rub it in.
