Hi!

I am a non-traditional student, reapplying this year after applying extremely late last cycle. Other than submitting my primary on June 7th and my secondaries as soon as possible, my application will be largely the same with the exception of a few volunteer experiences. I mentioned I am a non-traditional applicant because I graduated in 2014, took a job in software sales and have been working successfully ever since.

Since applying last year, I was promoted and relocated from Southern California to Maryland. While paying off my student loans has been great, I know sales is not my calling and no amount of money could ever change that. The reason that I have jumped right into reapplying is that my MCAT scores will be expiring nearly everywhere and I want to avoid retaking the test if possible.

Last year:
-Submitted my PRIMARY August 30th (only bright side there is AMCAS took a couple of days to verify)
-Submitted my secondaries from September 11th-Nov 1st
-MCAT 37
-GPA: 3.77
-Science GPA: 3.79
-CA resident
-Graduated from a UC
-Worked all four years, 20+ hours a week to pay for school
-1st-year job was an admin role in a doctor's office
-2nd-4th year job was at campus gym, where I was promoted twice
-Involved in two research labs ~225 hours
-Clinical Work/Shadowing ~125 hours
-Hospital Volunteer ~155 hours
-A couple appointed positions in my sorority (not all that meaningful)
-LORs from Upper Div Neuroscience professor, Chemistry Professor, Research Mentor, Undergrad work supervisor, and a Non-science Professor

This year:
Same as above and...
-Volunteer work with the USO ~150 hours (& adding hours weekly)
-Recently started a position as a hospital volunteer with the Red Cross....

Last year I applied to 15 schools and I intentionally aimed low. However, I failed to realize that my chances were slim because I was an OOS applicant (Ex: I applied to the University of Nebraska...I've never even been to Nebraska). Anyway, despite applying late, I received 3 interviews and was waitlisted at 2 schools.

My primary concerns right now are:

Will applying on time and to the right schools fix my application? How should I answer questions regarding my status as a reapplicant? I doubt "I'm not late anymore" will cut it....

PS I know my first application was just about as f-ed up as they come. Feel free to rub it in.

When your stats are this high and you are a reapplicant, the most important thing to know here is where all you are a reapp at. There are plenty of schools you are a fine candidate for, they will likely be mostly ones you arent a reapp at though.

@Faha I am trying to avoid actually reapplying to a lot of the same schools. Last year I pretty much only applied to schools where my scores were expiring with the exceptions being Duke, Wake Forrest, and UC Davis. Here are the schools I am looking at. Let me know if you think I should add a school or shouldn't waste my time with a school etc.

This year I am applying to:

Albany Medical College
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Boston University School of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Emory University School of Medicine
Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University
Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
Ohio State University College of Medicine
Raymond and Ruth Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania
Tufts University School of Medicine
Tulane University School of Medicine
University of California, Davis, School of Medicine (Reapplicant)
University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine
University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
University of Vermont College of Medicine
Wayne State University School of Medicine

I'm not sure about:
Duke University School of Medicine (Because I'd be a reapplicant)
Wake Forest School of Medicine of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (Because I'd be a reapplicant)
Saint Louis University School of Medicine
Stanford University School of Medicine
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

Also, thanks for your replies! It's so nice to have people who understand and a lot more productive than ranting to my friends.

Your list looks fine. Going 0/3 on interviews with these stats suggests interviews potentially not going as well as they could have. That said if you can shore up any potential interview skill issues you should be ok. Lower tier schools your stats are >90th percentile for like Wayne Albany Vermont and Oakland are just not worthwhile for you and rather low yield. I'd remove.

The schools you aren't sure about where you haven't applied yet are all fine: Pitt and SLU in particular work well. Northwestern UVA and NYU are a few more I might give consideration to if you aren't a reapplicant at them. I would apply to Keck if you didn't last cycle. Also if you are an MD resident now apply to your state school.

Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately, my scores are expired at Northwestern, UVA, and NYU. I took the test in 2013, so I don't have a ton of options.

Some of my secondaries ask if I am a reapplicant and what has changed, is it okay to admit that I messed up last time around? The reason my application was late was because I had planned on waiting another year to save more money, but changed my mind last minute after realizing my scores were expiring at several of my state schools. I know I didn't do the research I should have and was pretty limited financially, thus applied to state schools (in CA and elsewhere) with cheap secondary applications.

Is it okay to be that honest in my responses? I know phrasing is key, but at the end of the day, I don't think any amount of wordsmithing will make that answer pretty.

You have a good list. From your not sure list add St. Louis, Wake Forest and Pittsburgh. Other school you could add include:
Mount Sinai
NYU
Medical College Wisconsin
U Arizona (Both schools)
